I don't actually believe nagirei was love at first sight. That feels too shallow. I think Rei was a cute boy Nagisa wanted around for swim club reasons but also because he was nice to look at, and that Rei found Nagisa equally nice to look at. I think it's pretty obvious they're mutually attracted to each other and drawn to each other despite Rei's protests, and that they don't actually start dating until after they're done with high school.

i often tag both the japanese format and english format names of the characters in posts. but even if the japanese format isn't there the english format probably is

Second commission from @runawaymarbles ! Another beauty 😍 This one is Blue Lotus, White Lotus by @shions-heart It’s a NagiRei AU fic based on the Arabian OP. This fic is really great. All the ships make an appearance, though don’t get your hopes up for HaruRin. Rin isn’t a bad guy, just a spoiled prince. Everyone gets a happy ending after enduring their own angst. Highly recommend 🙌🏻

For most of his life, Rei found satisfaction and beauty in uniformity, or the absolutes, wherever he could find them. When he was little, he’d make sure to coordinate his steps to only step on each floor tile in the grocery store twice before moving to the next. He enjoyed volunteering in the library putting books back on shelves, because even in a place full of infinite stories and knowledge, every book had a place to return to. Learning strategies for solving puzzles, discovering the science behind the “why’s” of the world, memorizing theories and formulas that revealed life to have predictable patterns weaved into it… it brought Rei peace. There was comfort in stability.

By all accounts, Nagisa was an anomaly - the antithesis of Rei’s carefully constructed lifestyle, but an incongruity that drew him in all the same.

He was exasperated with the way Nagisa navigated his days from the moment he decided to pay attention to the guy. Nagisa’s decisions are largely charged on impulsivity and mirth, flinging him boundlessly forward into new goals and adventures. He set his heart on ridiculous things, ate until he burst, and saw his missteps as a chance to get up and try again. It left Rei baffled, because he couldn’t decide if Nagisa was acting on pure feeling without forethought, or if he was thinking things through faster than anyone could keep up with (maybe it was both, and if it was, that left Rei with even more questions). It shouldn’t have mattered, because Rei knew plenty of people disorganized and seemingly careless, and that carelessness is what made it hard for him to get close to too many people.

Nagisa should’ve been one of those people, but he wasn’t, and Rei’s head has been a trainwreck trying to keep up with every grand emotion battering down his pretenses. Spontaneity became familiar, swimming became enchanting, being on a team became a haven, and Nagisa… well. Where were the words? Where were the theories and patterns and science to explain how someone like Rei woke up in the morning with crumpled schoolwork scattered on his floor amidst abandoned blankets, golden unkempt noodle curls tickling his nose, pajamas twisted by grabby hands in the middle of the night, and he ached for it to never end?

Maybe there isn’t an answer behind the “why;” maybe there doesn’t have to be. Maybe the way Rei fell and keeps falling for Nagisa is another lesson in how to find delight in simply existing. All he knows is he doesn’t want to let it go.
