a deeper well.

On this exact day 5 years ago, I was in this same location ensconced by the towering mountains with an overlooking view of a calm, seemingly waveless ocean in the pre-summer blistering heat in San Antonio, Zambales. This time I get to come back with my OG friends slash Zamboanga childhood homies, my friend Karen Blaise who's now based in Clark, Pampanga, and my CPA Lawyer friend Abegail from Dumaguete. After countless discussions of reunions and "travel goals" with some of the important people that we know, and 99% of those plans that never came to fruition, we decided that we would make this outdoor camp happen, and thank God we finally made it happen.
Tumblr media
I felt like that 2D1N camping trip was surprisingly one of the longest weekends I had this year. Having to disconnect from our phones for a while because the camping site had no service was the perfect setting for us to reminisce about our adolescent and high school classic moments and teenage angst and how those unforgettable stories from our past (and sometimes politically incorrect moments lol) shaped the people we are today professionally and personally. We had a great time recounting all the crazy stories we had more than a decade ago, planned future travels, played frisbee in the middle of the night, and went hiking after sunrise breathing the cold pre-summer wind overlooking the almost CGI-looking mountains in Zambales. My belief of having this type of "disconnecting" was further reinforced from this trip that, as much as I want so much social interaction with a lot of people, I also like to be alone with the few people I truly trust, and that being alone doesn't have to be lonely and solitude is actually a good thing.
Being on the road while listening to Kacey Musgrave's Deeper Well album (shoutout to Track 6 Sway as my favorite track off the record) revealed so many truths about my current situation and the things I'm dealing with in my personal life, both good and bad, and how I strive to find peace in accepting the pain and the lessons it has taught me, and that I've already arrived in my final destination on some certain aspects of my relationships especially with the people that I love, and that I need to move on.
My Saturn has returned.

Mt. Balingkilat
Elevation: 1100+ MASL
Difficulty: There has been a lot of contention among mountaineers with regard to the trail class / level of difficulty of Mt. Balingkilat. Some classify it as a minor climb, some classify it as a major climb. I guess it's somewhere in between.
Exposure: Maximum sun exposure. Bring lots of sunblock!
Features: Grassland and rocky assault.
The reward at the top: A breathtaking view of the West Philippine Sea (I refuse to call it the South China Sea), as well as these four coves: Anawangin, Talesayen, Nagsasa, and Silaungin.

My friend Debbie invited me for a quick out of town to Zambales…
It was just Debbie, her BF Jom and me as the third wheel. We had the whole island of Nagsasa to ourselves except with the local of course, no other tourists..
While walking on the shores enjoying the sunset, Jom suddenly asked me if I can take a photo of them , as person who loves taking photographs, it was a no brainer… then pulled out my camera. To our surprise Jom went down to his knee and popped out a ring from his pocket.
I was happy as to where this scenario is going to, at least one from my circle of friends is going to get married. I don’t really know Jom that well, only met him twice.. but clearly Debbie is looks seriously Happy.
I’m glad they thought of me to be part of this event of their life…

Tourist spot in Zambales
I have other blogs that talks about what are the worth the try places here in Baguio as a student who is foreign in the City and the culture. Now it’s my time to show off my hometown, Zambales. Here are some places that are worth the visit in Zambales, if you are ever planning to do so!
SBMA - Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority
Tumblr media
(This is an underwhelming picture from my cellphone)
This town is an extension of Olongapo City, it is also a special economic zone located in the province of Zambales. It's the heart of action in Zambales, built on the old U.S. naval base. Think duty-free shopping, water sports, and loads of adventure like jungle treks and diving in Subic Bay. Perfect mix of business, fun, and nature all in one place! There are a lot of things you can do in this place, there are never ending choices of experiences to pick from!
Liw-Liwa Beach
Tumblr media
(Travelling Light | Google Images)
This beach is straight out of a postcard located in San Felipe, Zambales with its golden sands, clear waters, and epic sunsets. It's a surfing hotspot, but also great for chilling by the shore, swimming, or exploring nearby beachfront hangouts. This place is my sister’s go-to relaxation place, even though we live an hour away from the San Felipe. I would too, especially with the beautiful sunset and sunrise view accompanied by the splashing of waves and chirping of birds.
Lake Mapanuepe
Tumblr media
(these are my [Baguio] friends and I when we brought them to Zambales, specifically this place is Lake Mapanuepe)
This place is also called the “Little New Zealand”, located in San Antonio, Zambales. There’s not much to do on this ground but to camp and spend time with your loved ones while enjoying nature's beauty.  It's this serene freshwater lake surrounded by lush greenery. But getting there, STRUGGLE is an understatement. The road is not yet finished so you have to go through a one of a kind rollercoaster ride just to enjoy the relaxing view. It’s literally a ride to hell to enjoy the heaven of a view.
Worthy of special mention are:
Anawangin Cove
Capones Island
Mt. Pinatubo Crater Lake
Potipot Island
Nagsasa Cove
I haven’t been into these five places but as I can see, even those who doesn’t live in Zambales wants to visit the said places
Zambales is a hidden treasure full of potential, and if discovered, should not be trashed and be treated well. It is really a unique place, so if you plan to visit, keep these in mind!

In April 2023 my Family plan to go on a vacation where we can refresh and celebrate my Mother’s birthday. I actually suggest to have a vacation there since my Father lives in San Antonio Zambales so we can have a vacation and relatives visit too.
My Mom and Dad were not together so we don’t see each other for long time we can only see our Father if we visit him. Some of us rode a bus to get there it is 4 to 5 hours travel. We are so excited specially me because it is my first time to visit the place specially the beaches added up some excitement when my eldest sister tell us stories on how beautiful the beaches in there and telling us what we can do.
We go straight ahead to little Villa beach resort, since we need to celebrate my mom’s birthday first.
The resort has several cottages made up of Kawayan. There are two big rooms for visitors who want to stay overnight, one is air-conditioned. They call it family room. We choose to have the kawayan cottages, we really love to have this old version of staycation.
I really love the place, I felt peace all over my body. I can say I can relax in this place.
Pundaquit beach is located in San Antonio, Zambales it is my Father’s hometown.
Pundaquit is one of the barangays in San Antonio. In Zambales, when you say Pundaquit, most locals refer to it as beach. Maybe because of the fact that the barangay resides in a coastal area. So when people say “let’s go to Pundaquit,” it’s tantamount to saying “let’s go to the beach.
For someone like me who can simply appreciate the abundance of nature, it will always be a pleasure to see beaches deluge with mountains and trees. Pundaquit doesn’t offer white sand and turquoise-like water, but it proffers natural glow which makes you feel away from pollution and draggy vibe of the city
How could you not be amazed on a scene where sea waves directly hit the rocky mountain’s foot before it reaches the shore? How could you not be mesmerized to the perfect view of sunset?
Pundaquit also serves as terminal point of the tourists hankering to see Anawangin Cove, Nagsasa Cove and Capones Island. From Pundaquit, it takes 30 minutes to reach Anawangin, more than an hour to Nagsasa, and 25 minutes to Capones.
With fine and greyish sand, the sea water is abruptly deep few meters from the shoreline. Resort owners describe it as “biglang lalim” and warn visitors who do not know how to swim not to go farther to avoid any undesirable incidents. It’s not like any other beaches where even if you’re already 10 meters away from the shore, water level remains chest-deep
This is absolutely a perfect beach for swimmers and surfers who look for added adventure during their stay. The primary source of income of people living around the area is fishing. So expect that while you’re swimming, fisherfolks flock in the area taking advantage of the vast sea to catch fish. This scene is very visible in the wee hours of the morning. It somehow benefits picnic goers craving for fresh fish since fisherfolks sell it at very reasonable prices. You can cook, fry or grill freshly catch seafoods.
There is a lot of souvenir shops from locals that we can purchased for our friends and families but also to help people in there to support there living.
The municipality of San Antonio Zambales makes sure that they are doing there best to enhance the beauty of the place.
As I surely love to go back over and over, my hopes are also high that its inhabitants would preserve it as what it is at present and keep the beach untouched by modernity. I believe it is better keep that way.

@Pundaquit, Zambales. It is also one of the best sites to watch sunsets and sunrises, go swimming, and go island hopping right here at Pundaquit Beach. Pundaquit is the closest boat rental location to the islands you want to explore, making it possible to circle a large number of them. Let's go, then!!
These are the locations on the island that can be visited.
Camara Island
Capones Island
Nagsasa Cove
Annawangin Cove
Talisayen Cove
They will spend their summer at this tourist attraction in our region. We locals are running out of venues to experience summer because it is so crowded with tourists, hehe.

something something about fire and water.
fire is often an ominous sign. it reminds me of rage even if it keeps people warm at night or in the cold of the winter.
water reminds me of vitality- dewdrops falling down a leaf, a glass of cold water in the summer, a magnificent frigatebird flying over Nagsasa’s salty waters, a seagull plopping into the sea for a split second for its hunt of the day- even if on a December evening while walking over thin ice, it takes only one wrong step to fall into an icy lake and perish in absolute darkness. a terrifying, slow, and quiet end.
water is comforting and scary. it comes in ice that bites, water that drowns, in torrential amounts, in a tsunami.
fire is piercing. as glorious as it looks, it’s often temporary.
water will boil, liquify, freeze, liquify, boil again, and evaporate, and then reincarnate itself in raindrops. fire destroys and extinguishes. water nurtures, destroys, charms, and stuns. it keeps running for millions and millions of years. some same water molecule has run in this Earth for billions of years.
it seems to me like strength is really to be earned from such kind of experiences. even if it’s scary giving myself a pat on the back, this is apparently... who I’ve grown to be. there’s nothing much to be proud about, but today felt like a good day to sit down with the realization that wielding strength from what has happened turned out to be possible for me. much like my optimism, water is relentless. it’s probably why i like the sea so much. it’s probably why i was born on a rainy day.
