Tales of Kenzera: Zau Is A Magical Metroidvania Inspired By Bantu Myth

Tales of Kenzera: Zau Is A Magical Metroidvania Inspired By Bantu Myth
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Game Awards are packed with eager looks at highly anticipated games, but the ceremony is full of plenty of surprises too. One of them is a flashy Metroidvania called Tales of Kenzera: Zau, the debut game from Surgent Studios.
Zau is a boy on a quest to bring his father back from the dead. Guided by Kalunga, the God of Death, he uses his ability as a warrior shaman to defeat the ancestral spirits that roam the land of Kenzera. His main tools are a pair of magical masks; with the Moon mask he can manipulate time and crystalize enemies, and the Sun mask allows him to launch fiery spears. Studio founder Abubakar Salim says that the two masks are reminiscent of the Devil May Cry series with the way they allow the player to flip between ranged and melee modes.
The world is inspired by Bantu lore and imagery, with bright colors and mythical beasts. Additionally, the game will be scored by Nainita Desai, a British composer who made the music for Half Mermaid’s Telling Lies and Immortality.
Salim founded Surgent in 2019, but most gamers would currently recognize him as the voice of Bayek from Assassin’s Creed Origins. According to him, the passing of his father motivated him to create a new project – he wanted to tell a story of grief in the form of a video game. With assistance from the Ridley Scott Creative Group and Critical Role, five years later, Tales of Kenzera: Zau tells that story.
The trailer ended with the news that Tales of Kenzera: Zau will be coming to PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC on April 23, 2024.

Academy Partners With Mercury Studios to Launch Jonas Gwangwa Music Composition Initiative
Tumblr media
Jonas Gwangwa - South African Jazz Musician and Composer.
LOS ANGELES, CA – The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, in partnership with Mercury Studios, today announced the launch of the Jonas Gwangwa Music Composition Initiative, a one-year career development program for Black British musicians interested in composing music for film.  In celebration of the late South African musician, composer and Oscar® nominee Jonas Gwangwa, the program will provide real-world experience, one-on-one mentorship and networking opportunities, beginning in October 2022.
Part of the Academy’s ongoing Aperture 2025 global outreach and engagement efforts, the Jonas Gwangwa Music Composition Initiative aims to foster broader representation in film music composition, with an emphasis on Black British talent.  Its creation was spearheaded by UK-based Academy members Gary Yershon (Music Branch), Misan Sagay (Writers Branch) and Nainita Desai (Music Branch).
“This initiative seeks to correct an imbalance.  In contrast to the major contributions Black musicians are making to the music industry in the UK, their presence in the UK film industry is significantly lacking,” said Yershon, Sagay and Desai.  “Through this program, we seek to build community amongst Black artists in the UK by highlighting opportunities to bridge film and music careers.”
The program is open to UK-based Black artists and composers with at least three years of work experience as a musician.  Two participants, selected through an application process, will receive access to Academy members across various branches in order to gain an understanding of the filmmaking process; one-on-one mentorship with a member of the Academy’s Music Branch to learn about the practical aspects of composing for film; access to Academy events and screenings in London; and introductions to leading practitioners from all areas of film music, among other mentorship programming.
Participants will be matched with a filmmaker who is in the process of making a short film and will be given the opportunity to compose music for the film. The composition work will be funded by two grants from Universal Music Group’s Mercury Studios, a full-service, global production film and television studio, and Decca Records.  Additional programming and support will be provided by Abbey Road Studios.
Gwangwa, who died in 2021, was a prominent South African jazz musician and composer.  He received Oscar nominations for Original Score and Original Song for his work, with George Fenton, on “Cry Freedom” (1987).
Applications for the Jonas Gwangwa Music Composition Initiative are currently open.  For more information visit https://oscars.org/learn/jonas-gwangwa-initiative.

Much has been written about “Joker” composer Hildur Guðnadóttir, the Icelandic cellist who may well walk off with the Oscar Sunday night, making her only the third woman to win an Academy Award for best original score.
But she’s not the only woman who has composed scores for Oscar-nominated films. In fact, five others are in contention in the documentary feature, documentary short subject and animated short categories.
Three of the five nominated films in the doc shorts category were scored by women (and one of the other two has no score): Sasha Gordon for “Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You’re a Girl),” Amanda Jones for “St. Louis Superman” and Laura Karpman for “Walk Run Cha-Cha.”
Music for the documentary feature “For Sama” was composed by London-based Nainita Desai, and Japanese composer Karen Tanaka scored the nominated animated short film “Sister.”
The number is very likely a record at the Oscars. Last year’s doc shorts and features credited only one female composer (veteran Miriam Cutler for “RBG”).
“There is progress being made,” says Karpman, who is also one of the governors of the Academy music branch. “It’s important to celebrate the fact that all of these inclusion initiatives, at the Academy and with the Alliance [for Women Film Composers] and other women’s advocacy groups, are working. It’s slow, but we are seeing a flowering, especially in the documentary and shorts field. The door is open — we’ve just got to keep our foot firmly kicked inside of it.”
The improved outlook for women composer-arrangers extends to this year’s Oscar ceremony. A woman will conduct at the Oscars for the first time, as Irish-born Eimear Noone is set to baton a medley of this year’s original-score nominees, and, Variety has learned, this year’s team of music arrangers includes more women than ever.
The Academy declined to provide exact figures, but it is believed that the number of arrangers has increased from one (last year, Grammy winner Nan Schwartz) to four or five this year.
Adds Alliance president Starr Parodi: “Things are moving in a very positive direction. There is definitely a shift that I’m seeing and feeling. I just got back from Sundance and it was palpable there as well. It’s fantastic to see more high quality projects with compelling stories and Oscar-worthy production being offered to female composers. However, I feel like we’re at a very critical time. Because there’s more visibility of female composers, it gives the illusion that we are approaching some reasonable form of gender parity, when we are still a long way off from the goal. There still needs to be gender diversity in every conversation and pitch when it comes to scoring.”
According to Parodi, women composers in the Alliance now number between 400 and 500, and a U.K. chapter of the Alliance has just launched.

Nainita Desai - Untamed Romania (Ep. 76)
LISTEN
Tumblr media
NAINITA DESAI is a British composer and sound designer who has scored countless bespoke scores for film and TV including: BBC, HBO, ITV and C4. She has studied the sitar, piano, guitar, tabla and violin. She has worked with artists such as Tori Amos, Peter Gabriel and Sinead O'Connor. Some of her recent scoring projects include the WWII thriller, ENEMY WITHIN, the psychological horror film DARKNESS VISIBLE and THE LIFE AFTER. Another recent project is for the 2018 film UNTAMED ROMANIA, the most successful non-fiction film in Romania. It premiered at the Transylvania Film Festival 2018.
UNTAMED ROMANIA is a film that reveals the beauty of the European country as it is, raw, magical but fragile at the same time. The film focuses on the beautiful unspoiled lands tucked within the country but moreover on the numerous forms of wildlife that live there and how their lives are dictated by the seasons. It is a never ending battle for survival and Untamed Romania tells their stories. The film will made its international debut on 18th of March in Washington, at an ecological film festival and on 12th of April in London, at the BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) gala.
In this episode, Nainita Desai talks about the unique challenges and opportunities afforded to her through UNTAMED ROMANIA - writing her first score for a large scale orchestra. Desai discusses in detail how she reveals the characters of the animals through her musical themes and, in contrast, how the music she wrote for the various landscapes depicted was directly influenced by those landscapes themselves. Finally, she reveals which piece was the most difficult and how Untamed Romania was different from all of the other documentary scores she has written before.
