Wow, you guys already regressed to bitching about Castlevania. Btw, they produced Castlevania: Awakening in the Moonlight stage musical by Takarazuka Revue in Japan, it also has Dracula and Lisa in it. Castlevania lives on and thriving!

Considered just leaving this alone, but I'll take it as a chance for clarification.

Rant Below the Cut

I do not hate Castlevania, Netflix version or game version or stage musical version or any other iteration in-between. What few clips I've skimmed of the show online have suggested that it's something that the animators and writers put real heart in, plus a healthy dose of gay vampires to garnish with. I will repeat myself in saying that I quite enjoy the bloodstained Beauty and the Beast/villainy born of love route as a trope. To my knowledge, Castled Vania Dracula x Lisa is a great example of the latter. Great. Cool.

My issue with Castlevania is the issue I have with an infinity of films and books and games going back nearly 130 years. And that is the use of the characters' names from Dracula like they're costumes. Call it a nitpick or a pet peeve or just something that hits the big literary bitch button, but I Do Not Like that even when creators have ostensibly made a story that I could enjoy for its own merit, they feel compelled to graft the Dracula cast's faces over entirely unrelated, antithetical characters and motivations, and spoil the overall experience for me, the Dracula the Novel enjoyer.

I don't begrudge other people for being chill about it or enjoying the stories that have come as a result. I can't talk shit and be the DON'T ENJOY THIS!!1! police when I openly enjoy the gratuitous hot mess that is Hellsing. I am not immune to bondage suit anime men or Crispin Freeman voice acting or nazis getting eaten. I am not throwing those stones in my glass house.

But I am standing on top of the glass house and hurling boulders at the creators who, whether they make something fantastic or mediocre or genuinely teeth-grindingly awful, keep passing the baton of 'If we add Dracula names to this it adds more legitimacy! No, I have not read the book and I never will, but I don't need to because I read a footnote in a wiki once, I saw a movie, I read a spinoff of a spinoff.' Over and over and over.

That is what upsets me. That is my bitching point. Not whether you or anyone else Likes a Thing. You are not Netflix. You are not Konami. You are not Hirano or Moore or Coppola or Newman or Besson or Moffat or Browning. What you enjoy does not matter to me and never will.

Go enjoy your musical and let me regress in peace.

i’m interested in hearing more abt basil and dorian’s relationship 👀 i think i’ve missed a lot of Basil Lore and want to know abt ur goth king. what were things like between them before they got together? what are some qualities that they love abt each other? what are some Activities that they like to do together?

This has been sitting in my drafts since May 2022. I found it while looking for something I apparently saved in 2021.

Here's what I wrote in 2022:

haven't thought about this at length so thank you for prompting me to!! (lost my laptop, cannot play DA, was like a third into my run with basil, his character's changed monumentally, i got sucked into his backstory and AUs, etc)

anyway this is long sorry

prereq. information that i never know if i've conveyed thoroughly is that basil's one of those dang abominations they warn you about and shares mental and metaphysical real estate with a desire demon. not getting into that the most here for length etc

it all starts off with the fact that basil, a mage, has zero magical training whatsoever. never set foot in a circle. repressing it for most of his life, lucky it didn't go the chateau d'onterre route, the works - the important element is that he's got no knowledge about magic, but god damn is he interested in it now that, over the course of the mage rebellion and some prevailing circumstances, he's had a little time to get over the basic level of fear of his own magic.

he's got interest, he's got woefully unrefined talent, and he does in fact have some excellent and willing casual instructors in the other mage companions. i do think that solas is the best teacher between the three, and definitely the most immediately helpful at first for a lot of reasons, and they're all very different in discipline, but that's another tangent - one way or another, dorian's into esoteric theory and basil really gravitates towards him after in hushed whispers for obvious reasons. that as a shared experience is going to set up one hell of a foundation for bonding, and basil, even as a grown ass adult just due to the few and far between nature of his interpersonal relationships, will hold onto something like that for dear life. basil's also got your good old passing morbid fascination with death that sure can happen, and this absolutely insane time magic tying into that and all of the connections drawn there is, surprise, fascinating to him!

so his first excuse to be around dorian after in your heart shall burn, after he's really had to make himself settle down and get it together, is studying with him. and if either of them went into any such interaction with designs on anything of a non-academic nature, those hopes would be forgotten immediately because these bitches are autistic basil will genuinely get really into things that someone he enjoys is passionate about. this is also his longest-lived excuse to be around dorian and, as may be apparent, quickly becomes less of an excuse than the actual purpose of hanging out. the end of a long night may derail into drinks and conversation, but nothing is pushed. (this is partially because each presumes himself not to be a genuine candidate for affection.) the half-joking flirtation that dorian breathes and basil can pretend to be fluent in dies down when they're alone. basil's got a much larger presence in public than private, normally, and social scenarios can bring out desire a bit of bravado in him. and dorian's dramatic performance is subdued in turn. it's not necessary! they're still both dramatic fucks, but it's not to a theatrical degree. you know.

basil caught what he figured were feelings pretty quickly, due to this following an established pattern with people he had developed affections for. hell, he had to break down and examine his feelings about some other companions, but those could be dismissed for a thousand other reasons. given his romantic history - fresh out of self-induced heartbreak (there is more to it than this. he does not process that.), three for three in his mind as his relationships have gone, and loath to ruin things. not to mention the fact that, were he unaware of his own emotional instability, he's very frankly been reminded of it when attempting less-than-romantic pursuits by the objects thereof. everything at hand lets him know he is just not in a place for that right now, isn't sure if he would want the relationship or if he just wants a relationship, etc. exercises some maturity in this respect for the first time in his life. the fact that he nearly doesn't have the time or energy helps.

as we are aware, dorian is also bad at feelings. dorian is extremely bad at feelings. in the past, or under other circumstances, particularly where the world wasn't ending and basil wasn't literally his boss and the head of "operation make the world stop ending" and one of the most powerful men in the world, dorian might have made a move into something casual. basil's pretty. cleans up nice, roughs up nice - when they'd first met, basil was much more put together, much more formal in presentation, and since corypheus showed up properly and an army of blight-lyrium-corrupted templars swarmed their then base of operations and the way to keep that under control ended with basil stumbling half-dead out of a snowstorm after being caught up in the mountain being brought down on haven, he started dressing a bit more practically. cut his hair so it wasn't always falling in his face. ditched the heels most days (though that may in part have been due to the slight limp the whole affair aggravated). would in fact be caught dead without lipstick and heavy eye makeup on the average day (though he did get back to a bit of eyeliner quickly enough). while this was evidence of exhaustion, it did look terribly good on him. but the world was ending, and basil was one of the most powerful men standing in the center of its collapse.

JAMIE NAM: banded linsang. 19. he/him tboy. animation student. he is a nervous wreck and kind of a cringe failboy but by god he's trying his best

SANTIAGO FLORES: sheep. 20. he/him cis dude. fine arts student. absolute sweetheart with a huge family who's been dating jamie for only a few months before the inciting incident of the story (detailed below)

JOHNNY DEAN CLANTON: red appaloosa horse. 21. she/her cis butch. worked on her family's chicken/various other birds farm for a year after high school, then decided to just be a "free spirit" living out of her van and doing odd manual labor jobs for people. she's also an absolute player (with a thing for small carnivores in particular)

NULL: blue point siamese cat. 20. they/them agender. chemistry student and pawblix (furry version of publix) cashier. they are actually friends with people, but they're also great at lying and generally pretending to get along with people they hate. needs a smoke break

ARGYLE LANCASTER: lion. 21. he/him cis dude. engineering student who burnt out and decided to go into fashion design instead. chill and agreeable to a fault, he will go with whoever else's flow even if it ends up hurting him (or someone else)

the general gist of this story is that everyone here except for santiago knew each other in high school. jamie is childhood friends with johnny, johnny is friends with null, and null is friends with argyle. jamie gets introduced to null through johnny, then gets introduced to argyle through null. jamie is immediately smitten and has a crush on argyle for months

at the end of jamie's junior year/argyle's senior year, jamie finally asks argyle out. argyle says yes, but he's really not that into jamie, he just wants to see what will happen (... and also feels bad for him). over the course of the summer it becomes clear to argyle that this relationship cannot last but he keeps putting off on breaking up with jamie. finally, the day before argyle moves across the country to go to college, he admits to jamie that he was kinda dating him out of pity and breaks up with him. jamie, understandably, loses his fucking mind, blocks argyle on everything after he leaves, and proceeds to have the worst senior year of all time

flash forward a few years. jamie is now a sophomore in college in an animation program. he's got a new beautiful sheep boyfriend named santiago. null, who was only really an acquaintance before, goes to the same college as them and they become better friends. johnny isn't always in town but they still hang out on the regular. jamie is still mad at argyle, because why wouldn't he be, but there's enough good in his life that he doesn't have to focus on his one bad high school relationship

... until argyle, dropping out of his ruthless engineering program, decides to transfer back home. to jamie and co's college. now BOTH of them have to deal with feelings that have built over the past three years as seeing each other becomes almost unavoidable. jamie has to grapple with the fact that he can't be mad at argyle forever, and argyle is forced to actually deal with the fact that he hurt someone like that instead of just hoping they've gotten over it

... ok wow i did not expect to type that much. i scripted a comic of jamie seeing argyle for the first time in three years in a frenzy a few weeks ago, and i've been telling myself that i HAVE to do a longer comic (and by longer i mean like. more than 3 pages) with my ocs this year, so hopefully i'll start working on that soon. i'm also gonna make a separate Lore Post about my furryverse because there's some silly stuff i've come up with for it. anyway ENJOY
