thinking about barb and nancy + that 'it didnt have to end this way vs it was always going to' post. because at first glance, it DIDNT have to end that way. barb could have lived and loved and her and nancy would be happy. if nance had gone home with barb, or declined steves invitation, she would still have her best friend. but then, when you look deeper into it - it did have to happen. if barb hadnt died nancy would still have heels in her shoebox instead of a gun, and the pretty pink wallpaper coating her walls, and she wouldnt have ever been able to protect hawkins. their town would have fallen a long time ago if nancy didnt go upstairs. barb is both the unstoppable force and the unmovable object. her death isolates nancy, turns her on herself, festers in the back fo her mind like a parasite - but its that same guilt that drives her forwards. nancy has to grieve to allow the anger it puts in her to fight. it was always going to end that way. barb was always going to die. nancy is a soldier, and barb is her sword, sharp and bright and cutting.

I like to think that Nancy let her natural curls come through after Barb died because Barb was the only friend she ever let see them. Barb would always tell her how pretty her curls were but her mother always said they looked untidy so she straightened it. She liked when Barb called her pretty, she never told anyone that either. Now Barb is gone but Nancy still feels her love as she makes sure her curls are healthy and bright. Nancy would never see Barb again but every time she looked in the mirror she'd still hear her say how pretty she looked. Nancy just wishes she had told Barb she thought she was pretty too.

why nancy dove in after steve
spoiler alert: it isn't bc of 'true love' for steve as eddie and st*ncys suggest.
the first reason is pretty obvious and one i've seen others say before: nancy has a major savior complex. this is the same person who literally stood in front of b*llys speeding car to protect everyone else with her own body. if robin or eddie had dove in first instead she probably would have done the exact same thing.
the second reason is less obvious. think back to how barb died. it was in a pool, right, in water? dragged down by an interdimentional monster? what happens to steve in this scene? he is in water, dragged down by an interdimentional monster.
everything for nancy comes back to barb imo. this whole situation mirrors what happened to barb and this is nancy's chance for a re-do, to do it right this time. its where nancy's savior complex comes from in the first place, that she couldn't save barb. so seeing steve (or really anyone) in that same/similar situation kicks off her urge to do what she didn't know to do that night barb died.
that love eddie saw? it wasn't nancy's love for steve, it was nancy's love for barb. it's nancy doing for steve what she wishes she could have done for barb, if she had only known to.
(also: note how little eddie knows nancy. he's surprised that she keeps guns in her room. why would he know anything about her thoughts/feelings at all? its a total guess on his part based more on stereotypes than nancy as a person.)

back to a nancy and barb icon btw because do you ever just think about the years they did get? the brief little pocket of time before the expectations of young ladyhood were put upon them and they got to be kids?
maybe they ran through the mud until their shoes were caked in it.
maybe they searched for frogs in the creek behind Barb's house and then stayed up all night giggling over the stories of explorers and adventurers they'd made up during their quest in Nancy's basement.
maybe they went to ballet classes together and maybe they got scolded for laughing too much, for jumping too high, for paying more attention to each other than their teacher.
maybe they chased the ice cream truck halfway down the block in the scalding summer sun until the driver took pity on them and stopped.
maybe they got caught in the rain riding their bikes home from the arcade and caught the same cold.
maybe they laughed it off because it meant they got to stay home and hog the phone lines while their parents were at work.
maybe they just laughed.
no reason for it.
maybe Barb was a happy child. maybe they both were.
maybe it matters that before there are tragedies shaped like teenage girls, there are just children.

No thoughts just Nancy visiting Barb’s grave for the first time since her funeral and instead of finding an abandoned desolate looking grave it’s neatly trimmed with pink carnations and crown-daisies planted all over the place. She knows it can’t be the Hollands who have done this, they left Hawkins after Barb’s dead was officially confirmed by the government. But it must be someone who knew Barb well enough to choose her favorite flowers. After the first time she begins to visit Barb’s grave regularly to tell her about her life, her plans after school and also because she wants to know who brings fresh flowers there every week. When she sees Steve’s car parked at the cemetery one day and finds Robin at Barb’s grave, she doesn’t understand anything.

Obsessed with the idea of Steve doing a time thing like that Zac Efron movie where he's like 30 then wooshed back to high school and it sucks that he needs to go through that trauma again (worse still that he KNOWS what's coming and can't say shit because what if he messes with something Big or people think hes a bad guy for knowing things) but this time he goes with all the knowledge he had before and saves fucking everyone and Eddie is like hey you're actually pretty cool and Steve is like marry me about it (because im a die hard steddie baybee) but SPECIFICALLY that one scene where zac efron's character is like listing all the reasons the bully isn't shit and humiliates the guy. I think that would be awesome. Not sure who it should be tbh. Seeing bitchy Steve twirl some pencil that he memorized from Eddie doing it with his various switchblades (and that DOES it for Eddie and he learns how to do that. Which is so meta)
And Nancy and Barbara kiss. Because I'm rewatching the series and I'm mad we don't talk about Barbara more. And they then date Robin too.
Hey this was supposed to be a ramble but like. Maybe 👁👄👁
