I started this travel blog after traveling to China in 2014 with our young son. 10 years later, we're back in China during Xmas break, this time with our daughter for her first visit. We'll visit three cities on this trip, starting with Beijing the capital, and then flying to Chengdu near the middle of China, then Shanghai on the coast, and then train back to Beijing.

Beijing has changed so much! Gone is the smog that hung heavy on the city, instead we saw blue sky and gorgeous sunrise. And there are more high rises and fancy malls now.

Great Wall at Mutianyu 慕田峪长城

Forbidden City 故宫

The imperial palace of the last two dynasties of China was built in 1400s. It's an imposing structure that takes time to walk thru. It's surrounded by a large moat. The pot 3rd picture down used to be coated in gold, and you can see how the foreign invaders to China scraped gold off the pot. This time we also bought tickets to see some of the jade and gold treasures, the best of which were however taken to Taiwan by the fleeing Kuomintang government in 1949.

Nanluoguxiang (Or South Luogo Lane) 南锣鼓巷

We stayed near in this neighborhood to get a feel for the old Beijing with hutongs (courtyards) and were really glad we did so. You can see remains of the old Grand Canal 大运河 that goes all the way to Hangzhou. The South Luogo Lane itself is a shopping street with lots of cute shops.

Military Museum

We arrived at 3am via Hainan Airlines with no plans for the day besides lunch with friends. So my son chose the military museum. It's an impressive display of planes and tanks. And they took pains to clarify that the military is loyal to the Communist Party.

Modern areas

The fancy high rises can be found in the Central Business District or CBD. While fancy malls and other modern areas can be found in many parts of Beijing including Malingjiao where our friends are staying.

Incredible subway

Electric & hybrid cars

We returned to Beijing for our flight out, and stayed near the Wangfujing 王府井 shopping area. There are still some renovated hutongs near there. The hotel turned out to be the former back garden of General Tso 左宗棠 , after whom the famous Chinese-American chick dish is named.
