She was a schoolteacher, and then later worked with the NAACP and women’s rights groups to help expand women’s roles past domestic roles, also helping found the National Association of Wage Earners as part of the National Association for Colored Women. Most of her work centered around the intersection between race and gender. After the stock market crash of 1929, she was an advisor to President Hoover, and worked on his Negro Housing Council. #DYK in 1909, Nannie Helen Burroughs founded the National Training School for Women and Girls in Washington, D.C., under the motto: “We Specialize in the Wholly Impossible.” Born in 1879 in Orange, Virginia, Burroughs moved to Washington, DC when she was five. She graduated from high school in 1896 with honors and wanted to become a teacher. However, Burroughs had trouble finding a job because of her race. Instead she worked as an assistant editor for a Baptist newspaper in Philadelphia. With the support of the National Baptist Convention and Woman's Convention Burroughs was able to open her own school in October 1909 in Washington, DC. This school would provide African American women vocational training in a variety of fields. Burroughs also required each of her students to take a class in black history. Burroughs dedicated her entire life to the betterment of black women, the Suffrage Movement, the NAACP, and the National Baptist Woman Convention. Her school still exists today.
