"Some people have asked me what is the use of increasing possibilities for gender. I tend to answer: Possibility is not a luxury; it is as crucial as bread. I think we should not underestimate what the thought of the possible does for those for whom the very issue of survival is most urgent. If the answer to the question, is life possible, is yes, that is surely something significant. It cannot, however, be taken for granted as the answer. That is a question whose answer is sometimes “no,” or one that has no ready answer, or one that bespeaks an ongoing agony. For many who can and do answer the question in the affirmative, that answer is hard won, if won at all, an accomplishment that is fundamentally conditioned by reality being structured or restructured in such a way that the affirmation becomes possible."

new york city is a shit show right now and not because of the students peacefully protesting. i’m so sick of fucking cops. research the history of the police force in america. tear-gassing students and snipers on rooftops. we all know this will escalate. it’s just when. it’s ironic, when you grow up with school shootings and no gun laws you become pretty desensitized. if the government thinks a shooting will scare people then they’re just plain stupid. ivy league students being shot at on the grounds of campus. all i can think about is the kent state massacre. everyone attending protests please be safe and mask up!!! those not attending, if you can, drop off food and water to protestors fighting for our rights. you don’t need to be palestinian to care about the genocide in gaza, you just need to be human. they don’t just want to ban tiktok because of the mass spread of unregulated information. they want to ban tiktok because of the mass spread of empathy. billions of videos depicting the human experience. i have cried so many tears and laughed until my stomach hurt all for strangers i’ll never meet. when we care about each other more than we care about the dollars in our pockets it scares them. it scares them because they feed and live off of human suffering and exploitation. they’ve manipulated our minds so much we believe we are dependent on them when really they are dependent on us. they’ve divided us so much we’ve forgotten what it’s like to love each other. they’ve allowed so much violence and so much hatred that it’s become all we know. but a heart full of empathy and love will always want to share that love. that’s what they fear. capitalism is just a circle jerk of who has the deepest pockets and billionaires can’t exist without the exploitation of the working class. calculate how many hours you’d need to work earning minimum wage in order to be a billionaire. look up the recent layoffs of thousands of hiring recruiters across the country. research the nationwide implementation of AI that accepts your résumé based on buzzwords and not actual experience. did i mention homelessness is illegal and i’m pretty sure social security is like gone now? How many hours would it take to be billionaire?

Capitalism and the Patriarchy
Through the breaking down of our puritan beliefs about gender and dismantling restrictive gender roles and stereotypes, we bind ourselves, we can take crucial steps toward true freedom. The patriarchy and capitalism so are deeply intertwined, each benefiting and reinforcing the other; the former, through these gender roles, perpetuates inequality an thrives on the hierarchical structures it creates. While capitalism, exploits these divisions to maximize profit and control. Only when they saw more profit and labor did they finally accept women into the workplace.

//Girlhood And Roses And Azaleas//
TW: SA
I entered many places
As a young girl with innocence
Braided into her hair with ribbons.
But I left those places behind
with my girlhood in pieces.
Twist by twist, my innocence was undone.
My mother had burnt the edges of
Those cotton and silk strips
To stop it from fraying.
But the ribbons wore thin
When old men with insatiable hunger
Tried to pry open my legs before
first blood had slid down my shins
Along with my dreams
My young body was a treasure chest
and their hands were pliers
And my girlhood was sanded down
Against the edges of their fingers
Sharpened to the beginnings of
A womanhood that was honed
With a knife and bruised bones.
And the ribbons crumbled away to dust
When I remembered
The first time I felt my hands
being guided against my will.
I was a marionette and he pulled the strings
Even before my language had hardened itself
Against baby teeth.
Blood, it seemed
Was not thicker than water.
My hair neatly oiled by a mother
Smelling like jasmines and coconuts
Warm with whispers of safety and love
Was left with baby flyaways
The kind seen on a small child still
Adjusting to the outside world than the womb.
I wear my hair open now
Cascading to my shoulders
A remnant of a girlhood
that was Mine first.
I wear it like a goddess
Like Draupadi when she soaked it
In the blood of men.
I wear it down like the women before me
who clawed their way into womanhood
From a girlhood that was buried
With them under roses and azaleas
By shovels and yellow teeth.
I wear it down
And I keep the ribbons in my pocket
And sometimes I
weave it through the tendons
In my wrists
Because my girlhood belongs to me
and some day
I will braid it through my hair again.

"The prison has become a black hole into which the detritus of contemporary capitalism is deposited. Mass imprisonment generates profits as it devours social wealth, and thus it tends to reproduce the very conditions that lead people to prison. There are thus real and often quite complicated connections between the deindustrialization of the economy—a process that reached its peak during the 1980s—and the rise of mass imprisonment, which also began to spiral during the Reagan-Bush era. However, the demand for more prisons was represented to the public in simplistic terms. More prisons were needed because there was more crime. Yet many scholars have demonstrated that by the time the prison construction boom began, official crime statistics were already falling."

Free the Nipple Comrades
Titties are nuanced, comrades. While men's nipples go free and unnoticed, women’s are hyper-sexualized. It is time to free all nipples and to recognize that breasts, like all body parts, have more than one purpose. Let us challenge the status quo and push for equality in all its forms. As in order to free ourselves we must free all people, brother and sisters alike.

"She has not only been working for 50 years, she has been on the right side of history pretty much the entire time."
This is Roz Kaveney. We've been friends since 1985, and I can attest that she's been on the right side of history. I learned so much from her:
You should read this article. (And if you do, post your favourite quote or thing you learned from it...)

"How do drag, butch, femme, transgender, transsexual persons enter into the political field? They make us not only question what is real, and what 'must' be, but they also show us how the norms that govern contemporary notions of reality can be questioned and how new modes of reality can become instituted. These practices of instituting new modes of reality take place in part through the scene of embodiment, where the body is not understood as a static and accomplished fact, but as an aging process, a mode of becoming that, in becoming otherwise, exceeds the norm, reworks the norm, and makes us see how realities to which we thought we were confined are not written in stone."
