20-21 Nov | Sketching thumbnails

Assignment #5 brief:

Design a sample for your fashion magazine: a front cover and inside double page spread. Include a planning document with justifications of your ideas and design.

Overview of the next 2 weeks:

Explore the use of different page layout design techniques in order to develop ideas and create your fashion magazine sample. 

Put into practice your knowledge of the common design principles and other topics covered in your Visual Research Report.

You will submit TWO documents for this assignment; 1) Your magazine sample 2) Your planning document.

To begin planning, you will need to determine your target audience. Generate a title and aesthetic for your fashion magazine, sketching and mocking up thumbnail ideas. These initial ideas will need to be annotated and justified in the planning document. 

You have 6 tasks to work through in this double lesson.

TASK 1: Update your magazine plan. 

Remember this worksheet? If your idea has changed at all (and it probably should have, you’ve been taught a lot of new stuff regarding magazines!) then you will need to update your plan. You may fill in a new sheet if necessary (download and print it). Choosing your target audience, theme and title should be priority.  

TASK 2: Set up planning document. 

This is in InDesign. Title it ‘Planning My Fashion Magazine’. Add the information from your magazine plan to your document. This is the document where you will record all planning, screenshots and annotations for this assignment.

TASK 3: Sketch out 3 front cover thumbnails. 

These should be quick sketch ideas for front cover. Indicate where images and text will go. Refer back to resources from Nikki’s lesson on magazine terminology. 

TASK 4: Sketch out 5 inner page layout thumbnails. 

These should again be quick, and cover double page spreads. No single pages.

TASK 5: Photograph or scan sketches. 

You can scan these on the printer and e-mail to yourself or photograph on your phone. Input into document. Annotate each thumbnail with your thoughts.

TASK 6: Shortlist the final thumbnail front cover and page layout you will go with. 

Give a short 100 word overview of why these thumbnails are the best choice for your mag. What makes them successful? Can you link your sketches to any design principles or trends covered previously?
