i couldn't just go with the last line alone, so here, have a selection of angsty john/gale/marge from chapter two of the chimneys hardly ever fall down

He makes for the coffee before Gale can figure out what to say about that, pouring himself a mug and gulping half of it down without a care for the scalding heat. Marge winces, but Bucky doesn’t seem to notice. “I needed that,” he says, smile plastered on his face. Before the camp, Gale might have believed that smile. Now, all he can think is that it looks forced. Hollow. John Egan, trying to brazen his way right on past whatever is troubling him. Maybe he thinks Gale doesn’t know him well enough anymore to notice.  “I’ll just bet,” Marge says, squeezing Gale’s hand. “It’s a long trip out here.” “It is,” John says. “It is a long trip.” His expression tightens as he says it, guarded, like a boxer anticipating a blow. Jaw set, square to his opponent.  Christ, Gale realizes. He thinks we’re going to kick him out. He’s waiting for it. It steals the breath from his lungs, and he coughs, sharp and hoarse. Tries to disguise it, as if he’s simply clearing his throat, but Marge at least isn’t fooled. He can’t begin to fathom what his expression looks like.  “Well,” he says. His voice comes out as a painful rasp, no matter that he tries to steady it. “Bring the coffee over and we’ll get to eating. Pancakes and bacon.” The ghost of a smile—a real smile—flits across Bucky’s face.  “No eggs?” “No eggs.”
