Street Velodrome (SV)

I first came across this crazy, mini representation of Velodrome Track Cycling on The Bike TV Channel (Freesat 251) (other TV channels are available, namely: Sky 464, Virgin 552, YouTube and street velodrome.co.uk).

With a vision of people becoming more active by making cycling more accessible, Street Velodrome is free to enter. The events are devised to meet the aims and objectives of the UK Government’s Department of Culture, Media & Sports engagement strategy, ‘Sporting Futures - A New Strategy for an Active Nation’. In parallel, Cycling Futures aims to create greater access to, and support for, cycling within the National Curriculum framework, believing that cycling is a life skill, not merely a sport or leisure activity.

The Street Velodrome track consists of two official SV banked corners with straights of about 25 meters (which are part of the street) connecting the corners. The format is one of a pursuit race between 2 cyclists over about 5 laps. Time trials over 2 laps are run for all the entrants with the 4 fastest male and 4 fastest females going through to their respective semi finals and on to the final. There are events for Pro Teams (1 male and 1 female per team) and amateurs (2 child age groups and one adult).

It looks like the events are funded through TV rights, and partnerships and sponsorships with well known companies. The Street Velodrome series tours the country (and beyond) with at least 4 venues already secured for 2017 (Dublin, Leigh, Worthing and Newmarket) with more to follow. The series kicks off (or rather starts on the referee’s whistle) on 11 June.

The reformed National Curriculum as of 2014. Teachers now have more freedom and flexibility with the structure of their lessons however certain requirements must be met in accordance to attainment. I noticed the presence of this passage included in the document:

2.1 Every state-funded school must offer a curriculum which is balanced and broadly based1 and which: 

promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and of society, and

prepares pupils at the school for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.

There are many reasons that I become #depressed and for all of them I #beatmyself #beatmyselfup, because at the end of the day I am so #blessed and so #luckytobealive and be here with my family. #Survivorsguilt on top of everything else makes some days very challenging, for me and the people around me who will try to understand but as with my #livertransplant not quite get it. I’m seven months post transplant and supposedly looking “so much better” but sometimes like my #invisibleillness that was my #autoimmunedisease I may look fine but not be so fine inside. I really appreciate people trying to understand and emphasise about what I’ve been through but in the same way that I can’t imagine fully the pain of childbirth no one unless they have been through my experience will know what it feels like to be alive and know that you are only #alive because someone else is dead. I’ve started to watch a lot of sci-fi recently which has had various storylines about skins and replicants and the making of things which aren’t quite us but almost are. It would be so much easier if you could make organs and maybe one day we will but until then only the generosity of others will save lives through #organtransplants #organdonation - I can never thank my donor or her family and even if I could how could I ever form the words when #thankyou #thankyoureallyisntenough - the only thing I can do is try and live my life for both of us now and continue to campaign to bring organ transplantation onto the #nationalcurriculum - only through #informeducation #education will we reduce the #shortageoforgans available for #transplant and help the 6500 still waiting for an #organtransplant that may never come or come too late. Knowing that there are still so many waiting makes me feel more guilty for not feeling #happy #100% of the time. But that’s #depression for you. In my case at the age of 17 I was told that my body had #attackedmyliver causing #irreversible #cirrhosis to my #liver - I was told I would #neverbeabletohavechildren I would always need to take #medication and at the age of 30 I would need a #livertransplant - I got to 32. Now I am campaigning for organ transplantation to be brought on to the #nationalcurriculum and I have written a #childrensbook that I hope to #selfpublish later this year in the aim of helping to #educatechildren and their parents about the wonderful #gift which is #organdonation - #presumedconsent may help with the #shortageoforgans but only #informededucation will change things. Please consider becoming an #organdonor on the #nhsorgandonorregister But also consider signing my #petition - you really could #savelives #savealife - I’m only alive today because someone signed the organ donor register and now I’m going to be given an indefinite amount of time to spend with those I love. However I may need another #transplant in the future and there is no guarantee I will get one. I don’t want anyone else to go through this. I’m campaigning about being organ donation into the #nationalcurriculum because we need #education about such an important topic.
