Almost done. I still have to scrap off the dried up paint in between the gaps of the blinds and varnish the entire panel. Swipe to see size comparison. One of the more uniquely challenging murals to date, but glad to have been part of the heritage that was part of our history of artists from the yesteryears. And thank you to the good people at Sin Hup Seng for assisting 😊 . Before the days of the hawker centre, food often came to you, rather than you to food. Even in my childhood in the ‘70s, I remembered looking forward to the mobile satay man who would come around every couple days, and we would gather around the box and ate till our hearts’ content. A dollar would have gotten you 8 sticks of satay and 2 ketupats, and the satay man would was always super generous with the cucumbers, onions, and peanut sauce refills. 😋 With Grab food services today, we have come full circle, haven’t we? 🤔 😊 [Backstory: Pieces of my art for a book illustration project a couple years back... capturing the rags-to-riches story of a prominent family in the Events Management world today. They were too poor to own cameras so they never had any photos of their growing up years. It was my most challenging illustration gig, but also the most satisfying. Grumpy Cat! And @yipyewchong pretending to be one 😾😸 at @malayheritage. Till 6pm 23 Jan only. It was interesting watching him at work, planting his farm of ducks and chickens, along with one Guardian Cat 🐈🐓🦆🐓🦆😾 His art has wide appeal, as you see toddlers to senior citizens delighting in his murals and art pieces - it resonates with many. His fan base has grown, and he's frequently in demand whenever fans spot him. And he always obliges with wefies requests. Look out for the one fake cat, and a few real ones that claim the former Istana as home. Built in 1840 by Sultan Ali, the son of Sultan Hussein Shah, Istana Kampong Gelam was once the royal seat of the Malay sultans in Singapore. #yipyewchong #chickens #ducks #cat #mural #malayheritagecentre #NationalHeritageBoard #playing #streetart #Singapore #streetartsingapore #singaporestreetart #mural #murals #sgmemory #PassionMadePossible #loves_singapore  #igerssingapore #ExploreSG  #ExploreSingapore #instasg #igsg #Sgig #instagram_sg #lovinsingapore #YourSingapore #VisitSingapore #whatissingapore #SGCultureEverywhere (at Malay Heritage Centre) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZClF1TvLNq/?utm_medium=tumblr

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of going on Capital Radio 95.8FM’s 《小城大事》 议员服务, hosted by潘家镳 (Phua Kia Peow) and 林灵芝 (Lim Leng Kee). I had a great time exchanging views with the presenters and listeners about the importance of Singapore's heritage, and why we should promote and preserve it. Heritage is the sum total of the experience and memories of a people. In Singapore, our tangible heritage includes our cultural artefacts and monuments, while our intangible heritage refers to our food heritage, performing arts and cultural practices. Be it the food we enjoy or the festivals we celebrate together, heritage is a part of our lives - it belongs to all of us. That is why we will gather your ideas on the future of heritage to form a Heritage Plan for Singapore. Thank you to Capital 95.8FM for inviting me on your programme, and I really appreciate all the listeners who tuned in! #SGheritage #nationalheritageboard

If you were born in Singapore in the ‘70s and earlier, you should remember this place. Great World” Amusement Park (大世界,or Toa Seh Kai in Hokkien) was the “Universal Studios” of that era, and the idea of an perfect weekend evening family outing, especially for the kids . Candy floss, exciting rides, bright lights, merry-go-rounds, Ferris wheels, shooting stores, throwing rings, and endless spread of snacks and makanans... What was your favorite memory of the place? What a typical kitchen looked like in a kampong home back in the ‘50s through the early ‘70s... Rustic, poorly lit, somewhat dirty... In other words, just functional. Yet from such a kitchen came food that fed easily over 10 people in one household. 🤔 [Backstory: One of many pieces for a book illustration project a couple years back... capturing the rags-to-riches story of a prominent family in the Events Management world today. Map of the Pasir Panjang / West Coast area in the ‘50s... and the interior plan view of the 3rd version of their kampong house. This was all through the ‘60s, still on the same plot of land. The house even had an extended area at the back that they could rent out to Malay families. It really was a multi-racial kampong. The third home of the clients’ family. (Note the upgraded zinc roof from attap leaves – it was kinda a big deal back then). This was all through the ‘60s, still on the same plot of land. I must say that the @malayheritage has had interesting light ups this year. Its grounds lent itself well to it. They had one interesting installation that unfortunately launched just before another shut down, and the structure didn't last when Singapore finally reopened. The light painting 🎨 artists @stanley_chee @jojolau88 LAP LIP 2021: MAHKOTA By @space.objekt @reza.hasni Ended: 13 June 2021 #mhcislit The Lap Lip installation was an MHC platform where artists are invited to reimagine how the traditional Hari Raya light decorations can be. For this year's installation, MHC worked with Tina Fund of Space Objekt to bring an immersive and engaging space that draws inspiration from the past and future. The structure is inspired by the architectural landscape of Kampong Gelam, with patterns inspired by Malay motifs designed by local artist Reza Hasni. In the centre of the installation is a space for reflection, with soundscapes that transport visitors to the vibrant bazaars of past Ramadans. #malayheritage #mhcishereforyou #NationalHeritageBoard #lightpainting #longexposure #Olympus #lightpaintingphotography #lightpaintingart #malayheritagecentre #SgMuseum #museumsg #sgculture #NationalMonumentSG #SGMonuments #VisitSingapore #PassionMadePossible #lovinsingapore #SingaporeInsiders #wonderlustsingapore #whatissingapore #ExploreSG #igsg #instasg #Sgig #sgheritage (at Malay Heritage Centre) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVNxBjBhDEQ/?utm_medium=tumblr

I must say light painting is pretty fun - if you know how to do it right! We had fun trying out the light stick (thanks @jojolau88!) and the mini disco ball @ck.chai, running around sweating buckets and some how it turned out okay by trial and error. It was fun, and this place @malayheritage is just right to try it out, with @verysmallexhibition light up over the next few weeks, providing a nice background to colour up your night 🌃 @malayheritage collaborated with @verysmallexhibition to light up the facade of its main building in different hues of blue in support of World Mental Health Day, while its annex buildings are awash with the art collective’s signature neon light colours. The collaboration marks the first time that VSE has lit up a National Monument and it will be the art collective’s longest ever “momentary” installation which typically lasts for a few hours to a few days. To ensure that visitors to the centre will be able to enjoy the light-up from 10 Oct to end Nov 2021, MHC has extended the opening hours of its compound to 10pm daily. #worldmentalhealthday #breakthestigma #sgheritagefood #malayheritage #verysmallexhibition #mhcishereforyou #NationalHeritageBoard #lightpainting #longexposure #Olympus #lightpaintingphotography #lightpaintingart #malayheritagecentre #SgMuseum #museumsg #sgculture #things2doinsingapore #NationalMonumentSG #SGMonuments #VisitSingapore #PassionMadePossible #lovinsingapore #SingaporeInsiders #wonderlustsingapore #whatissingapore #ExploreSG #igsg #instasg #Sgig #sgheritage (at Malay Heritage Centre) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVNmLuThrsJ/?utm_medium=tumblr
