ACE AIR: ZACH FREDMAN

Inspired by classical Arabic and global folk sounds, Zach Fredman and Uri Sharlin of the Epichorus spent a night at Ace Hotel New York workshopping a new piece for oud and accordion. Captured in early morning light, Song of the Buffalo is a piece which Fredman tells us "honors a Native American myth of a young woman who marries a buffalo and teaches the buffalo her culture’s ways of ceremony and healing, and they in turn teach her the song and dance of the buffalo."

Zach Fredman is awad (oudist), artistic director, and composer for the Epichorus. He grew up playing classical guitar and studied at NYU before passing to the oud at the spell of Hamza El Din. He has studied with Arabic master Bassam Saba on the oud, violin and nay, and spent time at the feet of leaders of the Arabic musical communities in Jerusalem. His seven-piece band the Epichorus is fronted by Indian classical singer Priya Darshini. They recently celebrated the release of their second album Najara at National Sawdust. Zach also serves as the rabbi at The New Shul in Manhattan.

This January, our Artists in Residence are curated by National Sawdust, a performing arts venue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn dedicated to the development of innovative music created by performers who represent diversity in the arts. From Sasha Velor to Philip Glass, National Sawdust is dedicated to presenting pieces that speak to a new generation of arts enthusiasts.
