On a plant ID walk in college, in the woods right behind our building, there was a patch of these growing. Only time I've ever seen the rattlesnake plantain and it was just the leaves, but they sure look cool!

Liparis liliifolia aka Large Twayblade or Mauve Sleekwort is a native terrestrial orchid coming into full bloom now. This patch (other outside of frame) is growing along my driveway. Several more patches are thriving elsewhere on my property. I always look forward to seeing every orchid that grows here come into bloom. Twayblades like moist woodland soils which we have an abundance of. I spotted a native orchid on our walk this morning, managed to identify it as Epidendrum magnoliae, also known as the Greenfly Orchid. It is a type of plant that has little or no chlorophyll. All its nutrients are supplied by mycorrhizal fungi. It has no leaves. In the fall it sends up a stem with up to 26 small flowers. Platanthera lacera aka Ragged Fringed Orchid or Ragged Orchid. I found this several years ago a couple 100 feet from my buddie/neighbor's door. I was walking around and noticed an orchid-looking plant, no flowers yet. I marked it to watch it grow and discovered it to be a Platanthera. It grows in an area kept clear of bramble and saplings and regularly seeded with native wildflowers. It grows in full sun for about 8 hours. It's considered rare to uncommon in the mountains.
