“In all my beauty, in all my imperfections, in all my power, In all my space, In all my knowledge, In all my being, I am a Woman”- IRD • As we celebrate this day, remember that no one can say or do anything to change your identity. They can curse you, they can beat you, they can hate you, but they can’t be YOU or MAKE YOU!!! You are a force, and powerful one by just existing. • People fought really hard to provide us with the courage that allows us to fight even harder for the rights we have and deserve to have today & everyday. The fight is not over yet but we can celebrate all those individuals who identify as Women. We can celebrate that we have fought hard to get to this point and will continue to do so. • Take up space, A LOT of it and do not be afraid while doing so. We are stronger than we like to admit and even stronger together!!! #HappyInternationalWomensDay • Disclaimer: Please be mindful of pronouns and how others identify. The 20 Best Texture on the Runway Looks
This years Texture On the Runway coincided with our 20th year Anniversary!
Once again, Texture on the Runway proved itself as the most diverse show during New York Fashion week this year (in my humble opinion). With models of all sizes, ages, curl types, ethnicities, and genders, NaturallyCurly’s biggest hair event of the year exemplified that beauty comes in every form.
The runway showcased iconic hair and fashion looks from 7 of our favorite hair brands; Camille Rose Naturals, Cantu, Carol’s Daughter, Creme of Nature, Mielle, Shea Moisture, and The Mane Choice. Check out my top 20 looks from the show below!
1. Co-founder of NaturallyCurly Michelle Breyer and Afro-Latina rapper and Amara La Negra MC’d the event together in bright monochrome fits that absolutely stunned.
Amara La Negra’s second look of the night stole the show when she performed a brand new song on stage for the audience.
This opening look from Camille Rose Naturals set the precedent for a truly iconic runway that prioritizes diversity with their around the world themed show.
Camille Rose Naturals second runway look was another one of my favorites of the night. Brushed out pigtails!? So much yes. I’m never wearing basic pigtails again!
This was one of the fiercest looks of the night. From the face jewelry and heavy eyeshadow, to the long braided extensions, this whole look brought drama to the runway.
Cantu was the second runway show of the night and came through with a New Orleans themed show including a full jazz band that surprised us all by popping up in the audience! When the bride came down the runway to the beat of the band playing we were all shook.
Cantu also had a flower girl prance down the runway that sent my ovaries on fire. How cute is she!?
Speaking of ovaries aflame, Lisa Price came down the runway with her daughter after rapping her version of Jay Z’s “Public Service Announcement.” Iconic.
Staying true to their brand identity, Carols Daughter themed their runway show Mother and child. Last year supermodel Deandra Forrest walked down the runway pregnant, this year she strutted solo, and then again with her baby on her hip. Mothers are incredible.
Creme of Nature stepped up their game with an Afro-Punk Queen Bee theme. This was one of my favorite looks from their show.
Blue lips and melanin are so hot right now, making this look from Creme of Nature right on trend- with a dash of Queen Bee drama in all the right ways.
Creme of Nature also brought some beautiful men down the runway. Praying that the men’s natural hair movement is moving to more long haired curly men!
Not going to lie, Mielle really brought the house down with their show. Hair was truly the focus because the models barely wore any clothes! Instead, the models bodies were fully painted as they walked and danced down the runway.
This model was one of my favorites from the whole night. She walked to the beat of Nikki Minaj’s Chung Li and gave the audience a sensual dance and walk that I literally cannot stop thinking about. Iconic.
First fighting over crowns, the models then each found their own and placed them on their heads, showcasing Mielle’s theme of women empowerment. Yes Queens.
Shea Moisture made big moves and presented their Jamaican Black Castor Oil collection with the help of Miss Jamaica ( the first woman ever to wear an afro at the Miss Universe Pageant).
Bringing the Jamaican Queen on stage was only the icing, Shea Moisture also had a live performance with Jamaican music during the show while showcasing the versatility of natural hair. This was one of my top hairstyles from the entire night!
While hair may have been the focal point of the night, this model slayed in this yellow suit. Monochrome suits are one of my favorite trends right now and I hope they never go away.
The Mane Choice was the last show of the night and they did not come to play. They utilized lighting, music, and their models to represent their theme of empowerment for all women and all textures.
The last look I’m choosing is one of my favorites because it encompasses so much of what Texture on the Runway and NaturallyCurly are all about; diversity, inclusion, expertise, invention, and empowerment.
Those are my Top 20 favorite looks from the show! If you didn’t catch it, make sure to watch our re-cap video coming soon, or go to our FB page to watch our live coverage of the event!

The Magic of Curlfest 2017 This was my 1st time attending Curly Girl Collective's Curl Fest and let me tell you, there was so much natural haired eye candy beautifulness everywhere. My brain went into major natural hair overload. Seeing the textures and styles of everyone's hair, the sea of melanin in the crowd reminded me of the Wu Tang "Ice Cream" chorus, the hues of the colors of golden rod yellows, reds, purples, greens, and the colorful Ankara fabrics of the clothes everyone was rocking reminded of a wildflower field, the flowers that laid in the fros, locs, and curls of queens, and the beauty of each woman celebrating each other unapologetically was quite magical. It was the feeling of having a safe space for all of us women to celebrate our glory and our heritage together that made Curl Fest so special. We loved on each other, we gave compliments back and forth to one another, and we were all in awe of each other. As women of color and different ethnicities, it was so amazing to witness seeing ourselves in each other at every turn. Representation matters, and Curl Fest gave us that feeling of empowerment. Literally walking up Prospect Park in Brooklyn, I had no idea what to expect. I knew that there was going to a bevy of natural beauties everywhere, but that is an understatement. There were oddly enough, it seemed like a million dragonflies were flying around the entire park surrounding all of us while we were chatting or dancing it up with fellow curlies. I say it's because of all of the black girl magic paired with all of the scents of coconut oil, honey, and Egyptian musk in the air. I can still smell that goodness as I am on the plane now and it brings a smile to my face. The DJ's were on their 1's and 2's spinning reggae (which is one of the many reasons why I love New York) & old school hip hop jams. There were live artists painting amazing works of art dedicated to natural haired women. The infamous Spike Lee was there to talk during the empowerment circle. The energy and woman power felt in the park was so electric I could feel it in my soul y'all. Love, peace, and hella positive energy was most definitely in the air. The attendees came from all over the United States and world wide. I of course traveled all the way from South Carolina to witness the greatness of Curl Fest and it did not disappoint. The attendees were dressed to impress and the droves of photographers were ready for them. To me, Curl Fest is almost like an Afropunk festival, minus the focus on the concerts. It was like a natural hair fashion show. We all could wear what we wanted and show some skin without being judged. That was quite liberating. My favorites were seeing the little ones with their rainbow colored frohawks, big afro puffs, and baby dreadlocks running around with their smiles a mile wide. Those young ones got to witness everyone around them rocking their natural crowns with pride and confidence. I think that will be a wonderful memory for them to carry on to help instill in them those same values as they grow older. If you have an Instagram curly hair crush, all of them were in the house for Curl Fest. It was the perfect event to mix and mingle with your favorite social media queens and take hella selfies. Shout out to my curlfriends that I got the pleasure of hanging out with, seeing, & meeting: @themonacut @jadorebeauty @gethaiya @mamasitta @stylefeen @violetsambition_ @ohhthatsjustflash @iamdamejay @curly.edgy @christinavega_ @curlswithapromise @naomisoms @queen.samari @miminjulz @naturallycurly I have been reflecting on what has Curl Fest meant for me. I have to say that it has reminded me to be unapologetically confident in who I am, to focus on my self care, to never sway from what I truly want for myself, my family, and to have no fear in pursuing what I want for my career. Curl Fest 2018 I can't wait to witness more magic.
