Sometimes, black clouds can seem immense and eternal, but history and experience teach us that there is no night that does not give way to the dawn. Keep the faith and recognize that, after the storm, the sun shines again, and with it, the hope of better days...

The cancellation of the 2024 World Voices festival reminded me that I meant to make a post about this last week, when PEN America announced that it could not hold its annual literary award ceremony because so many authors and translators had withdrawn their submissions. I don’t doubt that there's another post of this sort making the rounds, but since the ceremony was going to be tomorrow, I wanted to celebrate the literary achievements of every Finalist with a demonstrable backbone.
This is a list of writers who acted with integrity by withdrawing their work from the American subset of PEN International, an organization which has served as a bridge between literature and human rights for over a century. PEN America has largely built its reputation by supporting persecuted writers, and has let down the entire international literary community by failing to take a meaningful public stance against the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people.
The following titles have been withdrawn from consideration at the request of the authors and translators:
PEN/Jean Stein Book Award
To a book-length work of any genre for its originality, merit, and impact, which has broken new ground by reshaping the boundaries of its form and signaling strong potential for lasting influence.
Hangman by Maya Binyam
Biography of X by Catherine Lacey
Poem Bitten by a Man by Brian Teare
Blackouts by Justin Torres
PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize for Debut Short Story Collection
To an author whose debut collection of short stories represents distinguished literary achievement and suggests great promise for future work.
The Sorrow of Others by Ada Zhang
PEN/Hemingway Award for Debut Novel
To a debut novel of exceptional literary merit.
Promise by Rachel Eliza Griffiths
Natural Beauty by Ling Ling Huang
PEN/Voelcker Award for Poetry Collection
To a poet whose distinguished collection of poetry represents a notable and accomplished literary presence.
Couplets by Maggie Millner
suddenly we by Evie Shockley
PEN Translation Prize
From From by Monica Youn
For a book-length translation of poetry from any language into English.
Owlish by Dorothy Tse translated from the Chinese by Natascha Bruce
Trash by Sylvia Aguilar-Zéleny translated from the Spanish by J.D. Pluecker

Thinking abt stobin who are so used to doing everything together that sometimes they’ll say “we/us” instead of “I/me” even when it’s just one of them
Like the kids ask Steve what he did while they (and Robin) were at school and he’s like “oh, we just went to the store” and they’re like who’s we

Cereal Leaf Beetle - Oulema melanopus
The last time this glossy Beetle was seen - many years ago - I found it in my backyard scampering on large plant blades. Today's specimen was found on a railing in Hamilton along with several more nearby. Do take note of this Beetle's appearance for the purposes of identification as many Oulema species call North America home. Specifically, this Beetle has mostly orange-red colored legs with black and claws (the feet); an orange-colored pronotum with no other markings and a black-colored head. Compare all these observations against a genus relative such as O. simulans. Such a specie is remarkably similar, but the latter has an orange head. You may be inclined to immediately focus on the dark-blue, punctuated abdomen, but this doesn't offer more in terms of identification. With all specimens you find, also consider the geography where you find them, as different species have different ranges. I've read that many species overlap in Texas in particular. Meanwhile, this iridescent insect found its way overseas from Eurasia and wound up in Canada after a US detour.
Now that these Beetles are active, they can enjoy the verdant spring, and based on location/seasonal records, it seems I may have been in the presence of an adult emergence! Where did the adults come from? Most likely from beneath autumn-dried grasses and tree bark. If it keeps the adult safe and intact from the bitter cold, it is more than appropriate to overwinter in. Now they will seek out reasonable sites to lay eggs. While this Leaf Beetle looks relatively harmless, a group of them may spell trouble once the egg-laying season passes! When the larvae hatch, they immediately begin to eat the plants they were laid on (the underside of a leaf generally). In this urban setting (which lacks cereal crops and tall grasses), their best bet is to hatch on broad leaves that are suitable alternatives for them, or to drop into wild grass below if that would be more suitable. Take note if you see this Beetle crawling around your backyard; you’ll want to be sure that there aren’t any more than just the one you find, especially if you have ornamental grasses in your care.
Pictures were taken on May 1, 2024 in Hamilton with a Google Pixel 4.
