Isabel II Swears the Constitution of 1837 Still in Force on October 10, 1844
Artist: José Castelaro
Location: History Museum, Madrid
Isabella II (Spanish: Isabel II, María Isabel Luisa de Borbón y Borbón-Dos Sicilias; 10 October 1830 – 9 April 1904) was Queen of Spain from 1833 until her deposition in 1868. She is the only queen regnant in the history of unified Spain.
Isabella was the elder daughter of King Ferdinand VII and Queen Maria Christina. Shortly before Isabella's birth, her father issued the Pragmatic Sanction to revert the Salic Law and ensure the succession of his firstborn daughter, due to his lack of a son. She came to the throne a month before her third birthday, but her succession was disputed by her uncle Infante Carlos (founder of the Carlist movement), whose refusal to recognize a female sovereign led to the Carlist Wars. Under the regency of her mother, Spain transitioned from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy, adopting the Royal Statute of 1834 and Constitution of 1837.
Isabella was declared of age and began her personal rule in 1843. Her effective reign was a period marked by palace intrigues, back-stairs and antechamber influences, barracks conspiracies, and military pronunciamientos. Her marriage to Francisco de Asís, Duke of Cádiz was an unhappy one, and her personal conduct as well as rumours of affairs damaged her reputation. In September 1868, a naval mutiny began in Cadiz, marking the beginning of the Glorious Revolution. The defeat of her forces by Marshal Francisco Serrano, 1st Duke of la Torre brought her reign to an end, and she went into exile in France. In 1870, she formally abdicated the Spanish throne in favour of her son, Alfonso. In 1874, the First Spanish Republic was overthrown in a coup. The Bourbon monarchy was restored, and Alfonso ascended the throne as King Alfonso XII. Isabella returned to Spain two years later but soon again left for France, where she resided until her death in 1904.

Calpe, Spain (No. 14)
The flag of Spain (Spanish: Bandera de España), as it is defined in the Constitution of 1978, consists of three horizontal stripes: red, yellow and red, the yellow stripe being twice the size of each red stripe. Traditionally, the middle stripe was defined by the more archaic term of gualda, and hence the popular name la Rojigualda (red-weld).
The origin of the current flag of Spain is the naval ensign of 1785, Pabellón de la Marina de Guerra under Charles III of Spain. It was chosen by Charles III himself among 12 different flags designed by Antonio Valdés y Bazán (all proposed flags were presented in a drawing which is in the Naval Museum of Madrid). The flag remained marine-focused for much of the next 50 years, flying over coastal fortresses, marine barracks and other naval property. During the Peninsular War the flag could also be found on marine regiments fighting inland. Not until 1820 was the first Spanish land unit (The La Princesa Regiment) provided with one and it was not until 1843 that Queen Isabella II of Spain made the flag official.
Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the color scheme of the flag remained intact, with the exception of the Second Republic period (1931–1939); the only changes centered on the coat of arms.

don’t mind if i do
Adam Lallana was born in St Albans in 1988. In summer 2014 he had just joined Liverpool (despite being an Everton fan) and now plays for Brighton and Hove Albion. He is of Spanish descent, his grandfather hailing from Madrid.73 There is no record of British military service for anyone with the surname Lallana, but that is not surprising as Spain remained neutral throughout the First World War. Adam’s mother’s maiden name is Lunnun.74 The National Archives has a record for a Private William Lunnun, who served first with the Devonshire Regiment and then with the Somerset Light Infantry. He earned the Victory and British medals for his service.74 His medal card indicates that he survived the war.
Jordan Henderson was born in 1990 in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear. He was 24 in 2014 and playing for Liverpool, and today he captains the Premier League Champions. Records show that in 1915 there was a J Henderson from North Shields on the River Tyne working as a merchant seaman on the HMS Sabine as a fireman and trimmer.91 The Sabine was a fishing trawler, registered in Aberdeen. Securing the food supply was a vital task during the war, and in 1917 the Sabine was requisitioned by the Admiralty to join the Fishery Reserve. The trawler continued commercial fishing, but under Naval control, until 1919 when it was returned to its owners.92 J Henderson was 34 in 1915 and had been a commercial fisherman, previously serving on the Fairport. Alongside him on the Sabine in 1915 were men from North and South Shields, along with others from across Britain, but also men born in Russia, the US, Sweden, Denmark, Malta, Holland, Finland, Sierra Leone and Ghana.93
