Northrop BT-1 torpedo bombers on board USS ENTERPRISE (the other one) circa 1940.
54 BT-1s entered service with the Navy during 1938. It was deemed unsuitable for carrier use due to handling difficulties and withdrawn from front-line service in late 1940. Despite being retired from front-line units, BT-1s went on to serve in non-combat roles with the USMC and at various coastal Naval Air Bases through 1942 and were totally retired in 1943.
Northrop was a subsidiary of Douglas at the time, and the BT-1 would be the basis for the later Douglas SBD DAUNTLESS.
I loved the brilliant between-wars paint schemes.

alfred rocking some different flight jackets (nerd stuff under cut)
The flight jacket, an iconic piece of any aviator's outerwear. Before they ever became symbols of fashion and the 'exalted' place that came with the occupation of pilot, the flight jacket as we know it was first made for function. Aircraft of World War I and the earliest designs were open cockpit machines, and many would remain that way in the Interbellum. All that to say this paramount paraphernalia's original purpose was to keep an aviator warm in the sky.
Keep in mind that the images above may not reflect every specimen of their type. Jackets differed in design by manufacturer, production block, and even by the military branch (Navy jackets also often have a different name) & unit ordering them. A great example is the wide range of looks for the quintessential B-3. My apologies in advance for them being all American designs. I would love to show off some of the British flight jackets, but I would rather do a little more research (and practice drawing Arthur more)!
A-1 (1927-1931)
A thin leather jacket designed for lower altitudes and made with a flattering fit high on the waist, the A-1 was the kickstart to the wide variety the Army Air Corps would come to know. The A-1 had differing designs between the Navy and the infant Air Corps, and early A-1s are distinguished by having seven buttons and a knit collar, which later models did not keep. However, later models did retain the knit waistband and cuffs.
A-2 (1931-1943)
The direct successor to the A-1, the A-2 quickly replaced its older brother. This is one of the more recognizable jackets from the States after becoming the standard for the Air Corps in the early 1930s. The quality of the jackets would fall due to wartime rationing, with early designs of horsehide and silk becoming goatskin and cotton, however, the general look remained. The A-2 was still primarily for open cockpit designs, lower altitudes, and warmer climes. Identifiable from the A-1 by its snap-down leather collar, zipper, and varying shapes and sizes of a hook-and-eye clasp at the collar to close it.
G-1 (1938-present)
This looker would replace the A-2 in form and function during the 1940s, first becoming popular with the Army and Navy before being adopted by USAAF. Originally named the ANJ-3/AN-J-3 the jacket gained its new designation by the time the Air Corps caught on. The G-1 came with a mouton collar and a bi-swing back to allow for greater arm movement, meanwhile, it lacked the over-zipper 'wind flap' of its predecessors. A keen eye for pop culture might realize that this is the jacket from the 1986 hit Top Gun.
B-3 (1934-1943)
Ah, the B-3! Commonly known simply as the "bomber jacket," the B-3 was made with a high-altitude bomber in mind, unlike previous designs. Incredibly bulky and lined with sheepskin the B-3 was made to keep crews at 25,000 feet above from freezing in their unpressurized cabins, with many such as the early B-17 Flying Fortresses possessing open waist gunner ports. The wide collar could be closed with two leather straps and the jacket did not come with the famous knit waistband or cuffs that others did. "The General" was a B-3 design made specifically for General George S. Patton, who popularized the B-3 outside of the Air Corps. (The B-3 had a slimmer cousin - the B-6 - designed as the 'quality of life' inside bombers improved, such as pressurized cabins.)
B-7 (1941-1942)
Short-lived, the B-7 Parka was manufactured for pilots operating in the brutal cold of Alaska. However, not much is known of it due to its limited production. In fact, the B-7 was discontinued swiftly due to its high manufacturing cost. Either way, the B-7 is a funky one-off that is easily distinguishable from the lineup by its three-quarter length and coyote-lined hood.
B-15 (1944-1954)
The infamous green flight jacket that many today typically know as the "bomber jacket". The B-15 quickly replaced its older brother, the B-10 (1943-1944). Like other designs it had many variations. Similar to the G-1, the B-15 shared the same pocket design and lack of a wind flap, yet the B-15 was cloth with a mouton collar and a knit waistband and cuffs. The shell was produced in a range of materials including nylon and cotton-rayon. It was lighter weight and far less warm than its sheepskin predecessors and spoke to the advancements in aviation technology. A quirk of its design that soon became standard was the designated pen pocket on the upper left arm.
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

So I've been reading One Piece since New Years on and off at my own snail pace and I'm currently at Chapter 1082. Out of the Current At the Time of this Post-1122 Chapters. A few things I'd like to say.
-Yamato not joining the crew TRAGIC. Depressed even. It was clear he was needed on Wano more to help Momo basically level up in being a good guardian, but at the same time I wanted Yamato on that CREW.
-Momo is justified in wanting to keep the borders closed a bit longer. Are you kidding me-the fucking CAPITAL LEFT THE GROUND and FLOATED HALF A MILE AWAY AND HAD TO BE DRAGGED BACK AND STILL CRASHED. It's in the SHIT right now. And I'm an 8 year old. In the body of a 28 year old. I need time to LEARN how economics work because that shit is WITCH CRAFT. He's valid in wanting something time to THINK and sort shit out.
-Everything leading back to the destruction of Ohara like: -grabs mic- HEY NAVY. HEY GOVERMENT. YOU DID THIS TO YOURSELVES. You had a gun, you shot it at Ohara out of paranoia and that bullet has ricocheted of so many different walls and hit you at so many angles you are full of more holes than a cartoon character. You keep MAKING YOUR OWN DAMN PROBLEMS.
-I really personally think that in a way-Buggy's performance and persuasion checks are ALWAYS at advantage against everyone he comes across at the cost of his intimidations against Mihawk and Crocodile. He's doing nat 20s on EVERYONE, getting what he wants, and what he needs; and then Mihawk and Crocodile show up and he's rolling 1s and 2s.
-I THINK GOL D. ROGER FINDING ONE PIECE, LAUGHING HIS ASS OFF AT IT AND THEN TELLING NO ONE IS THE ULTIMATE 'THEY WONT GET IT IF THEYRE NOT THERE' PISS OFF MOVE.

felix langdon was your classic all - american golden boy . born and raised in picture - perfect lincoln city , oregon , he lived a charmed and comfortable life , thanks to his family’s fortune built on a legacy of maritime trade and privateering . but even with all the privilege being his birthright , felix never turned into a spoiled brat . his mother , isabella , came from a humble background and married into the langdon legacy , and made sure to raise him with good values and humility . so , even with all the fancy vacations , luxurious clothes , endless opportunities and the five vintage convertibles laid out before him , felix stayed grounded .
felix was the guy everyone liked . star hockey player , prom king , perfect boyfriend , the friend who always listened — your typical all - round good guy . athletic , charming , kind - hearted . a genuinely good guy .
which is why you’d probably never believe that felix used to participate in the dare box game . he was … so not the type . but hey , peer pressure , right ? who hasn’t caved at some point ? and over time , he even wrote a few pretty wild dares himself . of course , he never expected any of them to be chosen , never imagined anyone would actually go through with them , especially not the extreme ones . so , did he write the dare that chris wilder picked that fateful night ? maybe , maybe not . but one thing everyone noticed was the overwhelming guilt felix displayed in the days following chris’ disappearance . even if he didn’t write it , it sure as hell looked like he did .
𝐢𝐢. 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒆𝒏𝒕 .
but life goes on .
friends drift apart . friends move away . friends disappear . that’s life . people come and go . people come and go , and the world keeps spinning . that’s just how it is , right ? … right ? well … that’s what felix told himself , anyway.
and so , life went on . he moved away , went to hockey college , joined the vancouver canucks , embraced the life of a professional athlete . the past ? buried . the secrets ? buried deeper . his friends , his exes , his enemies , chris wilder … all buried . forgotten . gone . his focus narrowed to his hockey career and the new life he was building .
but then , the unexpected invitation to the alumni event comes , along with a cryptic facebook message that brings all his old fears rushing back . the message hints at dark secrets from the night he’s tried so hard to forget — secrets that everyone involved swore never to mention again . secrets that could ruin his entire career if spun out of context . so , felix has no choice but to head back to lincoln city and face his past head - on , determined to figure out who’s behind these messages and what they really know .
𝐢𝐢𝐢. 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚 .
listen , this guy’s got it all . like previously mentioned , he’s your classic all - american golden boy . he’s good - looking , charming , athletic , and surprisingly grounded for a guy who’s had it pretty easy . always the star on the field , always the one who hits the game - winning shot , the prom king who would probably give a tori vega™ speech and go , “ i think we’re all royalty here ” . basically , everyone loves him .
but even golden boys have their secrets . he’s not immune to peer pressure and the constant need to live up to everyone’s expectations gets to him pretty easily . felix is a big softie . he feels things deeply , especially responsibility . he’s constantly trying to balance mistakes he makes with the person he wants to be . and … it’s exhausting . this white boy is exhausted™ .

based on uno reverse + so high school by taylor swift , “ and in a blink of a crinkling eye / i'm sinking, our fingers entwined / cheeks pink in the twinkling lights / tell me 'bout the first time you saw me / i'll drink what you think and i'm high / from smoking your jokes all damn night / the brink of a wrinkle in time / bittersweet sixteen suddenly ” . stella and felix ? total high school romance cliché . intense , overwhelming , and undeniably … codependent . she fell first , but damn , he fell harder . and oh , how he fell . it was the kind of love that burnt hot and bright and … way too quickly . the kind of love that consumed him whole , that made him feel crazy alive . the kind of love that was doomed from the start . it was young love at its finest , all - consuming and beautiful , but with an expiration date stamped on it from day one . ( taken by @stellaiem )
based on guilty as sin? by taylor swift , “ what if he's written mine on my upper thigh only in my mind? / one slip, i'm falling back into the hedge maze, oh, what a way to die / i keep recalling things we never did / messy top lip kiss, how i long for our tryst / without ever touching his skin / how can i be guilty as sin? ” . they knew each other , of course . same circle , same parties , same inside jokes . they were friendly , sure , but nothing more … until they matched on some dating app . and … the hooking up started . thing is , felix was still very much in the closet , so no one knew they were hooking up , and there was … a thrill to it . a secret fling with a cool guy , right under their friends’ noses . it was all stolen glances , coded signals , texts like ‘ janitor’s closet , 5 mins ? ’ , breathless make - out sessions … but then came the night of chris’ disappearance , and they were together moments before it all happened , and … felix felt guilty . feels guilty . for it all . for being with him , for the dares , for everything . now , years later , they’re both back … back in town , back in each other’s lives , back in that secret relationship of theirs . and it’s fun . my god , tae is fun to kiss . but the guilt … the guilt’s still hanging around too . ( taken by @taejvns )
based on we're having an all night revival , felix and peter ... they were inseparable . they grew up on the same block , were best friends from the start . and yeah , were athletes in different sports , sure , but were always together ! and ... leaving lincoln city was tough for felix , but leaving peter was tougher . phone calls and facetime helped , but it wasn't the same , especially with peter serving in the army . now , though , they're back . back together , and it's like no time has passed at all . like they're still those teenagers , racing each other down the street , talking about life , love and everything in between . and now , with felix back for a while , he's even helping out peter's little league team . they're back where they belong , best friends on the same block , picking up right where they left off . ( taken by @masleys )
based on touch tank by quinnie , “ he’s so pretty when he goes down on me / gold-skinned eager baby, blue shirt out the laundry / he tells me he’s gentle when he wants to be / so i think he wants to be gentle with me ” . this one’s a classic with a little twist : friends with benefits , but they were also friends with benefits back in high school . now they're sorta rekindling that flame , but felix is all grown up at 27 . he has a career , a house , a goddamn ranch , pets ... all he’s missing is a partner . and he’s trying to act more romantic with your muse , but they can totally shut it down btw ! ( love myself a good rejection plot SJSJSJS ) . he’s just showing that he’s not that silly high school boy anymore , and that he's willing to be more if your muse is too !
based on no body, no crime by taylor swift , “ no, there ain't no doubt / i think i'm gonna call him out / she says / "i think he did it but i just can't prove it" / no, no body, no crime / but i ain't letting up until the day i die ” . … you know how felix felt really guilty after chris’ disappearance ? well . your muse noticed . y/m is convinced felix wrote the dare .
but also ... high school friends , high school exes , high school rivals , high school teammates , high school friend he kept contact with , high school crush , flings , recent hook-ups , past and present neighbors , a recent tinder date . check this playlist for more plots !
𝐯. 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒕𝒍𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔 .
felix is bisexual ! in his late teens , he had his first experience with a guy at summer camp . it was a bit short and sweet fling , but it helped him understand himself better . he never really told anyone when he went back to st. mary's , though .
felix is musically inclined ! he’s not just a music fan ; he plays guitar , piano , and drums . he first picked up the guitar as a teenager , trying to impress a girl at school . but over time , it became his way of doing his own thing , a form of self - expression . now , he’s even writing his own songs and picking up other instruments just for the fun of it .
felix loves sports ! apart from hockey , he's also a big fan of soccer , swimming and basketball .
felix loves animals ! he's got two dogs in his ranch in dallas : duke , a great dane , and daisy , a jack russell terrier . and he's got a bernese mountain dog named bear and a scottish fold cat named tiger in vancouver too .
felix works out when he’s stressed ! physical exercise is his go - to stress reliever . whether it's hitting the gym for a weight session , going for a long run , or shadowboxing , working out helps him clear his mind . physical exertion allows him to process his thoughts and emotions more effectively . and i can just imagine him in the middle of an argument , suddenly going “ i need to go to the gym ” and taking off JSJSJS .
felix has undiagnosed adhd ! he's always been a ball of pent up energy , always found it tough to concentrate on anything that doesn't totally grab his attention . so yeah , he shows a lot of signs of adhd , but has never been officially diagnosed .

#imagine
you wake up one morning to find that your dream to travel back in time to the victorian era in the wonderful country of england was fulfilled! you crawl out of the sewage-filled gutter you woke up in and start your journey on foot to the creepy vampire castle on top of a hill that you could see from the village. the smelly villagers stare at you and look disdainfully at your air force 1s, graphic t shirt, and ankle-length navy basketball shorts, but you don't care what some fuddy duddy bitches who don't even wipe their asses think. you're here for one thing and one thing only: to meet your favorite historical figure of all time, dio brando.
the journey up the hill is quite arduous. as you trudge through the snow, you're grateful that you come from the era of mass-produced athletic footwear. the sun is setting by the time you reach the top, but that's just perfect for what you came to do.
unfortunately, it seems the castle is surrounded by a mote. you gag at the reek of stagnant water and wish you wouldn't have to get your clothes all wet and dirty. but suddenly, the drawbridge crashes down, giving you a clear path to the front gate. dio himself stands by the entrance as if he's been waiting for you.
as you get closer, you're hit with a pungent miasma of sweaty, warm onions or perhaps garlic. you'd thought vampires were allergic to plants in the allium family, but the smell was coming off dio in waves. "gotdamn!" you can't help but mutter to yourself.
"pardon my odor, gender neutral mademoiselle, i haven't yet taken my yearly bath," he says, licking some barbecue sauce off his lip. as he speaks, the rose he's holding wilts as if the stench is too much for its delicate petals to withstand.
"if you stink in the cold you're a dangerous motherfucker," you reply, and he smirks at that, like it's something he's proud of.
"allow me to show you my abode," he says, taking your hand in his and escorting you across the threshold. your heart pounds in your chest--you can't believe you're already in the holding hands stage! but why do his hands look and feel like boiled chicken feet? he was so much sexier as a 2d drawing.

Day 7 of Ode to Phoenix
Whoa, I can't believe we're already a week into celebrating this glorious, gorgeous woman. Talk to Me Ch. 15 is on track for a late night/early morning finish so I didn't want to miss a day of recognizing our girl.
As promised, this one will be shorter. It's a Phoenix headcanon. As you can probably tell, I've personality typed the heck out of these characters and that includes their Enneagrams. And what better day of Ode to Phoenix than Day 7 to celebrate her being an Enneagram Type 7!
I was talking to @melodiousoblivionao3 about this, and I think there is definitely a strong case for Phoenix to be a Type 3. I'll lay out how I type, and we can all discuss! If you're not familiar with the Enneagram, you can read more here, here, and here. I also highly recommend The Road Back to You if you're interested in learning more!
It can be easy to mistype based on characteristics, so I tend to prefer starting with the triads: Gut (anger), Heart (shame), and Head (fear). In very simple terms, the triad determines what drives or motivates you. 8s, 9s, and 1s are driven by gut; 2s, 3s, 4s, by heart; and 5s, 6s, and 7s by head.
Of these, I feel that Phoenix is most driven by head (fear). And, specifically as a 7, the desire to avoid/distract from her inner world. The movie doesn't give us a lot to go off of in terms of what drives most of the younger pilots, but Phoenix is always the first to jump into something whether it's a game of pool, song at the piano, or football competition. One of the things that sets her apart from the other pilots is that although she is determined to go on the mission, she doesn't crave recognition (maybe why she doesn't get as much love as she deserves?). Natasha is the only one to own her mistakes during the debriefs with Maverick and notably never tries to impress him during the hops beyond flying capably within the parameters.
What clinches her being a 7 for me is that she operates through knowledge (also head.) I think it was @coraphoenix who pointed out that she is the only one who doesn't underestimate Maverick. She is also the only one who doesn't underestimate Bob. Instead, she sizes him up through a game of pool and waits until she's had a chance to fly with Maverick to make any judgments. She and Hangman also seem to be the fastest at processing information and determining outcomes, which keeps them a step ahead of everyone.
As a 7, Phoenix's key traits are according to Truity:
Always on the go
Wide range of interests
Childlike enthusiasm and energy
Curious, sparkling eyes
Many ongoing professional and creative projects
Upbeat and optimistic; glass-half-full outlook
Well-liked and popular among peers
More detail from the Enneagram Institute:
Phoenix is playful, high-spirited, and practical. She constantly seeks new and exciting experiences, which makes being a Naval aviator such a good fit for her. She can misapply her many talents, becoming over-extended, scattered, and undisciplined, but this is where the Navy's structure and protocols help her excel. Occasionally, Phoenix shows glimpses of impatience (dealing with Hangman lol, but also not properly anticipating a turn) and impulsiveness (interrupting Maverick to defend Rooster for going over the time limit.) But since she seems to be at her best, she's able to focus her talents on worthwhile goals, and be appreciative, joyous, and satisfied. We never see Phoenix down or discouraged for too long.
Given that she has no trouble navigating the Navy's male dominated environment, asserting herself, or adopting what could be perceived as more masculine posturing (ugh, I will go on a rant about female Type 8s on another day), she's likely a 7 wing 8. Which means, she shares many of the same qualities as the Type 8. The 7w8 typically appears tougher and more career-driven than other Sevens. The 7w8 is confident, assertive, and encouraging. They harness the 8’s bravado, becoming persuasive, assertive, and competitive. Often starting things they don’t finish, they still value having a good time over gaining power. Hangman is a Type 8, imo, so this last part explains why the two of them actually work really well together.
I'd love to know your thoughts!

Let's say you got paid money to build to craft and paint two armies of A Very British Civil War for a game store that want to use them for introduction games, what would the armies be, what would be a rough army composition, and how would you paint them?
Basic armies would be a Leftist army, so The People's Army, which would be a mix of Partisan styled models: men and women in regular or industry clothing, wearing small assorted bits of military gear and using Soviet made gear and weapons. Maybe throw in a Royal Navy crew who defected to join them, along with a selection of Soviet artillery and vehicles, like the BT-5 tank and the BA-6 armoured car, along with civilian vehicles as transports.
Opposing them would be a Rightwing army, so part of the military arm of the British Union of Fascists supported by Royalist soldiers, and possibly some German or Italian fascist 'advisors'. So blackshirts in British army uniforms and gear, the former dyed black, but with additional early war German equipment and some weapons. British army regulars supported by Matilda 1s or Vickers light tanks, or even some WW1-era armoured cars brought back into service. A Panzer 2 or 1, marked with the BUF emblem and a Flak 88 as support.
Might have some militia cavalry for both sides.
A nice regular battle idea, since all the other groups get extra zany with units.

more outfits!!
here is my outfit from today! i wore my free people dress with a black long sleeve under it with my blue converse (of course)
here is my birthday outfit!!! it ended up being really cold and rainy for my birthday, but i didn’t mind.
here is a more lazy outfit i wore recently. i made those shorts from a pair of jeans myself :)
here is my easter outfit featuring a nasty sunburn from the day prior that i’m still trying to recover from hehe. i promise i wore sunscreen but i seem to be completely immune to it. i found the dress at old navy and i had to have it because the color matched my bedroom walls and it had peonies on it, which are my favorite flowers so it just had to be mine.
and here is the outfit from the day my car broke down :( i found these super cute shorts from target and they’re actually part of a matching set, but sadly my chest is too big for the top. good news though!! my transmission was fine which i was worried about, but the belt snapped and i desperately needed new struts and i was able to get my car repaired and i got it back today!!! :)
also for my birthday my partner bought me a nirvana book and a pair of air force 1s which i’m going to try to style. i actually really like music and my favorite band is nirvana. or cigarettes after sex. (i think, i hate picking favorites) and i can’t pick a favorite solo artist. the little bits of poster you can see next to my mirror are actually part of a huge poster of kurt cobain. anyway. i hope you like my outfits :)

37974, Douglas D-558-2 Skyrocket, NASM Silver Hill, Maryland, 09-08-1974 by Gordon Riley
Via Flickr:
Piloted by A. Scott Crossfield, on November 20, 1953, the Douglas D-558-2 Skyrocket became the first aircraft to fly faster than Mach 2, twice the speed of sound. Air-launched from a U.S. Navy Boeing P2B-1S (B-29) the swept-wing, rocket-powered D-558-2 reached Mach 2.005 in a shallow dive at 18,898 meters (62,000 feet). The D-558 series of aircraft was developed by Douglas under the direction of Edward H. Heinemann for the U.S. Navy to explore transonic and supersonic flight. The National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA, the predecessor to NASA), used this Skyrocket, the second one built, to explore the flight characteristics of swept-wing aircraft. It set several other speed and altitude records before the program ended in 1956.This, the second Skyrocket, bureau number 37974 (NACA 144), went to the NACA, which used it to investigate the behavior characteristics of swept wings. During this program, before its conversion to all-rocket propulsion, the D-558-2 #2 revealed the tendency of sweptwing aircraft to pitch up under certain aerodynamic conditions. After modification in 1950 to all-rocket configuration, the D-558-2 #2 attained Mach 1 .88 and an unofficial altitude record of 79,494 feet. while flown by Douglas test pilot William B. Bridgeman. Following delivery to the NACA, this Skyrocket extended its unofficial record altitude to 83,235 feet, while flown by Marine test pilot Marion Carl on August 21, 1953.

The second that Spaul was through the portal from Cyber City to Castle Town, the strings lowered him downwards and he touched ground with the loud creaking of his body. Being able to fly-or, well, zipline was more appropriate-places was convenient, but probably not the most subtle. He’d leave the flying be for now.
After saying farewell to Spafnir for the moment, he turned to his Addisons, who had been silent for most of the trip with the exception of continuing to ask who “Hazelnut” was. Now that he was close to his end goal, he figured he could at least give them the basics. Voice slightly quieter but not by much.
*[Hazelnut] 1S…MY [[bestie]] BESID3S-SIDES SP4FNIR. SHE’$ A-A-A [valued customer] AND ALWAYS [just the sweetest thing!]…EV3N TH0UGH I DO-DON’T KNOW [[why?!]]…
*SHE’S AL-ALS0 FROM THE [[light]]. 4ND…I…
He grew quiet for a moment as they all looked up at him, eyes wide as they took in the information he was telling them. Shocked not only by the fact she was a Lightner but by his sudden change of heart. Before he suddenly hissed exhaust and turned away.
*WH4T AM I DO-DO1NG T3LLING YOU [tired of seeing ads?] 4BOUT MY [[dirty little secrets]]?!?! YOUR [[Never There]] YOU DON’T-YOU D0N’T [[deserve]] TO KN0W!!!
*…1’LL TELL YOU [[later]]. [20 minutes into the future]. IF THIS ALL-IF THIS 4LL G-G0ES [according to the instruction manual]…
*Spaul…interfering in the affairs of people from the Light is serious business. I know you want to go there, but maybe you should’ve thought about this more…?
A prerecorded laugh track from a studio audience of some kind played in response to Coral’s words. He didn’t turn around.
*…We get it, buddy. Your mind’s been made up. Just…good luck, alright? Hope everything works out. Don’t…hurt anyone, ok?
*Oh my god…Queen’s Mercy, what the hell is that?!
As Darkners started to notice, and subsequently run in terror, from Spaul, the NEO only nodded. His smile looking grave and wistful.
*STAY-ST4Y-$TAY-[[Stay away!]] 4ND OUT OF TH-H-HIS. I’LL…try not to.
And off he went, stomping towards his shop. Good place to start looking for her as any, right?
Leaving his Addisons confused, mentally hurt, and at a lost for what to do next. All they did was advertise. How were they going to stop him?
(Asks to all parties involved (Spaul NEO, Coral, Saffron, Navy, and Clem) are now open!)

Randy’s Warbird Profiles: Grumman F7F-3P Tigercat
June 28, 2024 Angela Decker Warbirds News 0
By Randy Malmstrom
Since his childhood, Randy Malmstrom has had a passion for aviation history and historic military aircraft in particular. He has a particular penchant for documenting specific airframes with a highly detailed series of walk-around images and an in-depth exploration of their history, which have proved to be popular with many of those who have seen them, and we thought our readers would be equally fascinated too. If Randy’s last name seems familiar, it is because the U.S. Air Force’s present-day Malmstrom AFB, near Great Falls, Montana is named in honor of his cousin, Col Einar Axel Malmstrom. Col Malmstrom commanded the 356th Fighter Group during WWII, flying P-47 Thunderbolts, the first of Randy’s articles featured an example of the type, P-47D 45-49406 (N7159Z) at the Flying Heritage & Combat Armor Museum in Everett, Washington.
This installment of Randy Malmstrom’s aircraft profiles takes a look at the Grumman F7F Tigercat. On January 2, 1930, Grumman Aircraft Engineering Aircraft Corporation was founded by Leroy (“Roy”) Grumman three of his friends, Leon (“Jake”) Swirbul, William Schwendler, and Edmund Ward Pool, when they left Loening Aeronautical Engineering Corporation. First located in Baldwin, New York, the plant was moved to Valley Stream and Farmingdale before moving to Bethpage, New York in 1937. Initially nicknamed the “Tomcat” (but considered too suggestive), what became the “Tigercat” was designed as a carrier-based aircraft for the larger U.S. Navy Midway-class carriers.
Detail design began in 1941 but was delayed by including an “unsatisfactory” tailhook design and poor directional stability with only one engine operational, but the biggest delays came from the Navy asking Grumman to give priority to the development and production of the Hellcat. The Tigercat was powered by a pair of Pratt & Whitney R-2800-34W Double Wasp radial engines and was fitted with four M2 cannons (two in each wing root) and four 0.50 cal. M2 Browning machine guns in the nose. It had a max payload of 2,000 lbs. and could be configured to as a single or two-seater.

In November 1944, F7F-1 BuNo 80291 completed the type’s carrier qualification trials aboard USS Shangri-La (CV-38), but by that time the land-based VMF-911 had been training on F7F-1s at MCAS Cherry Point, North Carolina since the summer of 1944. After producing just 34 -1s, Grumman began turning out F7F-2s, which, at the Navy’s request provided space for a radar operator, which required the capacity of the reserve fuel tank to be reduced from 426 to 375 gallons.
The story of the Tigercat in World War II is a case of so close, yet so far. The first squadron to receive the F7F-2N was Marine Night Fighter Squadron Five three One (VMF(N)-531) Grey Ghosts, which embarked aboard USS Attu (CVE-102) on July 24, 1945. As the ship neared Guam, the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6. After unloading in Guam, the squadron arrived on Okinawa on September 1, the day before the Japanese signed the “Japanese Instrument of Surrender the following day. The same fate befell Marine Photographic Squadrons Two Five Four (VMD-254) and Three Five Four (VMD-354), both of which operated the F7F-3P. The combat debut of the Tigercat would have to wait five years just across the Sea of Japan. During Korea, VMF(N)-542 Tigers and -513 Flying Nightmares flew night interdiction and close air support sorties with the latter squadron shooting down a pair of Po-2 biplanes on night harassment raids. Combat operations for the Tigercat ended in April 1952, when the Flying Nightmares flew it final combat sortie, although a number of F7F-3N/-4N/-3Ps continued to fly in non-combat roles until the end of the war.
While 1,500 Tigercats were commissioned, fewer than 500 were delivered, and, to my knowledge, only eight remain airworthy. This particular F7F-3P, BuNo 80483, was delivered to the U.S. Navy on July 24, 1945 and was assigned to NAS San Diego. After 46 hours of non-combat flying time, it was relegated to the boneyard at NAS Litchfield Park, Arizona but became one of less than twenty Tigercats eventually rescued from Litchfield. This example flew for SIS Q Flying Services out of Santa Rosa, California. In 1962, SIS Q Flying Services of Santa Rosa, California won a National Forest Service contract to provide airborne forest fighting services in California and Oregon and acquired a number of Tigercats, including 80483, and outfitted them for aerial fire fighting operations. Registered as N6178C, this aircraft flew over 1,300 hours with SIS Q Flying Services before eventually being sold.

In November 1988, it was shipped to Duxford, U.K., and for a time was painted as a Tigercat of U.S. Marine Corps VMF(N)-542. It was then acquired by a John Sessions entity in 2003 for the Historic Flight Foundation which is now shuttered but was previously located in Spokane, Washington. In 2016, it was sold to Comanche Maverick Air, L.L.C., a Houston, Texas-based entity, owned by Dan Friedkin. It is currently painted as an F7F-3P with tail code “MW” of U.S. Marine Corps VMJ-1, and in the name of a former Tigercat pilot, aeronautical engineer and author Lieutenant Commander A.M. “Mike” Granat, United States Navy (Ret.), Lt Commander Granat flew over 30 aircraft, including the Tigercat.
About Randy Malmstrom
Randy Malmstrom grew up in a family steeped in aviation culture. His father, Bob, was still a cadet in training with the U.S. Army Air Forces at the end of WWII, but did serve in Germany during the U.S. occupation in the immediate post-war period, where he had the opportunity to fly in a wide variety of types which flew in WWII. After returning to the States, Bob became a multi-engine aircraft sales manager and as such flew a wide variety of aircraft; Randy frequently accompanied him on these flights. Furthermore, Randy’s cousin, Einar Axel Malmstrom flew P-47 Thunderbolts with the 356th FG from RAF Martlesham Heath. He was commanding this unit at the time he was shot down over France on April 24th, 1944, spending the rest of the war as a Prisoner of War. Following his repatriation at war’s end, Einar continued his military service, attaining the rank of Colonel. He was serving as Deputy Wing Commander of the 407th Strategic Fighter Wing at Great Falls AFB at the time of his death in a T-33 training accident on August 21st, 1954. The base was renamed in his honor in October 1955 and continues to serve in the present U.S. Air Force as home to the 341st Missile Wing. Randy’s innate interest in history in general, and aviation history in particular, plus his educational background and passion for WWII warbirds, led him down his current path of capturing detailed aircraft walk-around photos and in-depth airframe histories, recording a precise description of a particular aircraft in all aspects.
