I have returned from the dead once more. I'd say this time for longer but honestly knowing me I need to stop giving false hope. Either way! I'm back for at least a little. More Rambles and Art under the more! (+ vtube model stuff)

Say hello to my new little blorbo, not that I've replaced Parker, far from it, but I wanted a new face for myself that was more notable and potentially memorable? I wanted to make a banner I could end my posts with, something not too in your eyes but still cute and a worthy addition. I even taught myself Inkscape to make the signboard behind her so it could look Crisp, haha.

The process of designing something new has definitely gone through a few renditions, starting with my basic brown haired cyan eyed lady I used to use as a persona, and slowly working its way here. Funnily enough this actually started because I wanted to start getting into Vtubing, and decided to start binge watching those 'how-to make and design an avatar' videos. Then I spent 8 hours straight drawing and painting a model and the rest is history.

During my long hiatus not only have I been video gaming, but I've been learning Live2D, and so far have made maybe 2-3 models, and am currently in the process of making my newest design into her own.

I'll probably finish the hair and mouth of one of my older ones in order to have something usable if I wanted to start streaming my art first, but I do aspire to have a model with this newest design, I think she ended up really cute, and am really crossing my fingers it's unique.

That's enough of rambling about that though. Thank you for sticking through this long post! Again, I hope to post more often, maybe even about non-art stuff and perhaps, gasp, my hobbies, but that depends on how often I find more to draw and say haha

5. How would you describe your artstyle?

Hmm difficult to say... Best I got is that I try to make things glowy ? Soft, maybe

9. What's something you always come back to when drawing?

Referring to what I keep drawing: my ocs or the Blorbo of the Year

Referring to a part of a large piece I will not be finished with until the end no matter what order I draw things in: the skin. Just in general. Especially the larger expanses of skin (arms, legs etc) because they tend to look off to me haha

Alternatively the background/lighting. Not because I struggle but because when I get frustrated doing small, detailed, tedious shading is always a fun way to like. Reset the brain

10. How do you deal with artblock?

Arguably I've been in a constant state of artblock since. What. Last December? (Stares at the muu and shidou trial song pieces) But honestly I just try to push through!! Usually I try doing studies of images or paintings, but the expressions thing I did over on my art blog helped a lot with getting back into the drawing mood (even if it took. 2 rounds of different ask memes to actually get back into it)

It really is just a "be patient and do what you can" thing I think

18. Something you feel like you need to improve on?

COLOURING

My main issue with the first pass of most of my art is that the colours are too dull or too bright or they don't go together

Similarly, values and shading. I have a slight issue with making things muddy...

Also, while a bit more silly... I need to stop going back and tweaking "finished" pieces. I've changed the shidou trial songs piece like 3 times after posting the "finished" one on like 3 servers

19. Where do you find inspiration?

Honestly usually from other people's art!!

In terms of style and technique I tend to find new ways through watching people's speedpaints or other similar videos, and character design through things like redesign videos.

And in terms of style, I . I actually don't know where mine came from. Weird mix of every artist I've seen ever I guess?

In terms of subject... It depends. Usually it just Comes To Me (see: everything I've drawn with kazui) or based on an art piece . Considering I draw fanart mostly it usually comes from interpreting something or grabbing the symbolism and feeling of the source and slapping it on a paper. I'm not very articulate but yk

3. Who’s your third-favorite Robin? Tell us one thing you like or dislike about them.

Lmaoooo okay. Well! A preface is in order because I know people like to take things too seriously and when I say Damian is my least favorite I know someone somewhere is going to get upset so- I do not DISLIKE any of these characters. I find all of them enjoyable in some ways. There's just characters I like more than others. I don't hate your blorbo.

1) Tim is my favorite. He's confident and very sure of himself but has a more mild disposition and opts to play a mediator role when he isn't busy making the most bonkers too much plan you've ever seen. His comics are the most entertaining to me because he usually gets paired with someone who's doing something ridiculous and his personality tends to let people go "Yes and" right up to the point of being too much. Also he likes sports and I get to draw him in hockey jerseys. He's good support for other characters to bounce off of and I like him for that. What I dislike is that because of his more mild disposition he can very easily be written out of narratives or forgotten about.

2) dick for nearly the exact opposite reason. If dick is in a comic he is almost always the star of the show. The story revolves around him. It's dick and friends. He should get to be meaner. I haven't read much of the current nightwing run but my wife keeps up with it and dick is her favorite. She loves him. I have to rank him high for her. What I dislike about dick is that I NEED him to leave those women alone. Stop dating. Stop it.

2.5 not a robin but Cass goes here I think she's great

3) Jason. I like some of Jason's stuff and I dislike a lot of Jason's stuff. He's weird but also somehow I think he's the most normal one of them. I get frustrated because he has a lot of potential in character arcs but he's written so deeply inconsistently that it's difficult to nail down who Jason todd is and what he wants. (Gotham knights video game Jason is everything to me.)

4) steph. As spoiler and Batgirl she's great I love her but also wow holy shit she got some of the worst writing of any of these people. She constantly gets thrown under the bus and shafted. She's not very enjoyable to read because of that and also some deep inconsistencies in writing quality just simply depending on if the writer respects women or not. And that's not her fault but it does impact reading experience.

5) Damian. I simply don't find tsundere characters enjoyable. I don't like this personality type. Again- i don't hate him. I'm glad he's here he's a fun character. But I don't ever find myself actively looking for Damian centric comics. He's a good sidekick character when he gets to play that role. I hate the way some writers will write Talia because of him. I think it puts Talia in a very bad light and i dislike that she spent so long in the comics trying to distance herself from her upbringing only to turn around and basically just through bad writing do the same thing to Damian. I think it's poorly thought out and written by people who don't like her and don't respect her. (And again! I don't hate him! I've drawn more fanart of him than I have of dick and Jason combined!)

1. ELISABET SOBECKKKK MY WIFE FOREVER. She's my blorbo of all time my wonderful lovely wife who I adore so greatly. Best character all time forever. Also no more Horizon characters allowed on this list because otherwise that's all it'd be

2. Jesse Faden from Control. Before HFW dropped I claimed her as my favorite video game protagonist because as much as I feel HZD as the better game and the better narrative, there's just something about her that draws me to her. She's great I love her so much and her alien brain bestie

3. Actually I lied one more Horizon character is on the list and thats Alva. Unironically Alva feels like she was written and designed EXCLUSIVELY for me. Like everything about her is my type its unreal. AND SHE'S EVEN CANONICALLY GAY? I'm in love

4. Frye Splatoon. Okay I actually don't consider her or any of the other Splatoon characters wife material (and also I'm aware she has a canon last name lmao), but she's just a female character I very much love and refer to as my "squid wife". Fighting in the yuri trenches (Fryes team) for every Splatfest so I can go home to my loving wife (Frye)

5. Emily Stardewvalley. THE original video game wife of mine. I genuinely feel sad at the thought of playing SDV and marrying someone OTHER than her. She's everything to me she's my wonderful wife who's a liiiittle bit stupid (babygirl my farm has used exclusively sprinklers since you've moved in you don't need to water my crops <3) but I love her so so much regardless. Three ships (As I’m writing this out I’m realising they all have pretty similar themes, I guess I have somewhat consistent taste, this is all just reminders of humanity, enemies to lovers, trying to kill each other and excuses to cover my blorbos in blood.)

1.) Alex/Yassen

Can I be controversial and admit this one took a lot of convincing? Originally I was expecting the fandom to be more into ‘unlikely parental figure’ Yassen (which is a trope I’m an absolute sucker for.) but any way these two characters interact is interesting to me, and I’ve definitely come round to it from a perspective of this is only ‘healthy’ because it’s them and no one else can really understand them like the other can, and if it’s not ‘healthy’ it’s all dubious and quite fun. Big sucker for the (sort of one sided?) enemies to lovers, borderline obsession, as character foils of each other, with Yassen kind of representing Alex’s future and the dichotomy of like... sunshine puppy and murder kitty vibes. Then there’s the loyalty to each other before their ‘side’, different worlds and different morals but a unique understanding of each other.

(Also worth mentioning that I like Yassen with basically any Rider - I don’t see John/Yassen as anything but unhealthy hero worship/daddy issues/manipulation but that itself is still interesting, and I’m a huge sucker for Ian/Yassen, either as like an old married couple or people who have a few brief, but very intense encounters throughout their lives. I feel like there’s been a bit of a ‘Yiannaissance’ recently that I’m really enjoying. Do we have an official ship name? Yian? Iassen? Neither seem great.)

2.) Jonathon Reid/Geoffrey McCullum.

Peak different sides, enemies to lovers, vampire hunter and powerful newborn vampire in 1918 London in the grip of a pandemic, great gothic industrial vibe. I played this game obsessively during lockdown. (Can’t imagine why.) Themes of duty and purpose and humanity and horror, the game sort of rushes you into a forced romance with one of the female characters but the chemistry between these two is insane they are kind of obsessed with each other and the fight that happens when one of them tries to kill the other is just TEEMING with homoeroticism.

3.) Villanelle/Eve Polastri

First two seasons of Killing Eve are some of the best television ever created. The theatricality of the murders, and the comedy contrasted with some just devastating moments, the OUTFITS. That ending really took the wind out of my sails with this one and kind of spoiled it for me but what was there with the themes of mutual obsession, both trying to kill each other, Villanelle drawing out this dark side of Eve that has always been there, Eve drawing out this humanity that also been in Villanelle, just the whole vibe of being the only people in the world who could possibly understand the other properly and hating that so much you try and kill each other before realising they can’t be apart.

First Ship - I think the first one I really went insane for was Morrigan/Warden from DA:O. Morrigan helped me realise I was a lesbian I was so in love with her. Still am tbh.

Last song - ‘King’ by Florence + the Machine, I went to her concert this week and she ran right past me it was amazing.

Last Movie - finally got round to watching Everything Everywhere All at Once, so incredible!

Currently reading - chapter 3 of ‘The Viking Diaspora’ by Judith Jesch for my seminar tomorrow. (I really want to read more novels this year!)

Currently watching - His Dark Materials, interspersed with weird niche YouTube video essays, and mildly embarrassing amounts of Bluey.

Currently consuming: last thing I ate was some cinnamon raisin bread with one of the fancy jams I got in the jam advent calendar I bought myself. Now I need to figure out where I can find pineapple and yuzu jam bc I want to eat it forever.

Currently craving: supermarket bakery chocolate chip cookies, and some sweet and spicy fried chicken.

1. Are you named after anyone?

Possibly a great, great(?) grandmother I never had the chance to meet, via middle name, though it’s been... probably at least a decade since I heard that tatter and I’m not sure how correct it is, lol. I’m... not particularly close to a vast majority of the family, tbh, given Drama(TM). Mom picked by meanings though. I know that was very important to her.

2. When was the last time you cried?

I... think I cried a little about a week and a half ago in one of my classes. Not because the class, I promise, lol. We watched the pilot episode of a show called Station Eleven in class and that was a gut puncher.

3. Do you have kids?

No, thank you. My pets and my OCs are all I need, lol. Very ace. Not my personal cup of tea.

4. Do you use sarcasm a lot?

Mmmm. I wouldn’t say regularly. It has its moments and I’m sure I was a bit more brutal with it when I was a kid, but its purpose isn’t generally helpful in areas where I need to communicate. I think most of the things I say sarcastically now are probably in regards to fictional characters. xD

5. Favorite time of day?

Late evening, in that like seven - ten pm range. Generally evenings. I’m absolutely not a morning person. If I’m up rather early, I’m tired later in the day. Evening tends to host “me” time.

6. Eye color?

Good ol’ reliable brown. (I need more brown eyed ocs, tbh?) Fun fact: eyes are kind of what enchants me, irl and I probably tend to be a bit invested in fictional character eye colors, too, lol. They’re beautiful. I have no other explanation. That said, I’m very shy about eye contact until I feel more comfortable with people/get to know them better.

7. Scary movies or happy endings?

Happy endings, if I’m picking between them and scary. I don’t do horror, I am baby. I can be enraptured by a decent thriller and loved a good crime drama TV show. I can kind of do paranormal stuff sometimes, but I can scare myself just thinking a little too hard about it, so very hesitant.

8. Any special talents?

Mmmm... nothing nontraditional, I suppose. I had a few music teachers tell me when I was younger that I have hands that would’ve been great for piano, but I wasn’t super interested in pursuing musical interests outside of, like, basic school requirements. I did chorus for a while, but was kinda eh. I did enjoy acoustic guitar, but, again, not exactly enough that I ended up doing anything with it.

9. Where were you born?

Rural northeastern US of A. I miss having a fall season, but decidedly not enough to give up the warmth of living much farther south.

10. What are your hobbies?

Largely video games, lol, if it was hard to tell. I’d like to do more drawing and get into digital art. I am majoring in Digital Media Design, after all. One of my hopes is to properly play around with a tablet I bought myself over the summer while I take a break from courses. I desire to draw my blorbos, haha!

11. Do you have any pets?

Two ball pythons, the loves and amusing occasional nuisances of my life! They made a brief appearance on my main here. There’s also two dogs in the house, James and Cooper. Cooper is definitively my mom’s dog, however, and, jokingly, my little brother. (He’s her favorite. We all know this.) Cooper is... ??? We think a Collie mix. And James is a Basset-Lab, both adopted about a year or two apart, if I remember right.

12. What sports do you/have you played?

Oh, actual eons ago, I briefly played soccer (probably not very well) when I was very, very small. I have ridden horses (I miss them, Brent), but primarily only in schooling shows and I did participate for a few years in my barn’s summer gaming series just at Walk/Trot. I used to ride low-level jumping courses. Competitive sports haven’t ever really been my thing, particularly to participate in. I would’ve called riding one of my hobbies while I did. It’s an expensive one though and a bit of a tricky one to get back into when balancing college and part-time retail work. My mom and I try to stick to our developed tradition of selecting a local trail riding venture to attend every year for my birthday though that keeps that connection outside of whatever I vicariously pick up through games, lol.

13. How tall are you?

5′5ish. A smidgen shy, but that’s what they put on my license.

14. Favorite subject in school?

Histories and sciences. If I wasn’t so averse to writing research papers and math, I have genuinely considered majoring in either area. Unfortunately, my university doesn’t have a program for meteorology (weather and natural events are a somewhat more recent interest of mine) and video games evidently have some staying power as my interests, so that’s how I ended up in DMD.

15. Dream job?

I’m honestly not sure anyone has a really solid answer to this question, lol. I certainly don’t. I... went into DMD partially because it was interesting enough and I genuinely felt college would benefit me somehow. While I like my pet store job, it’s not exactly where I’d like to spend the next twenty years, even if I am a creature of habit that balks at change, lol.

So, theoretically, I’m studying DMD and entertaining the idea of a minor in creative writing because characters have always been one of the most important aspect of games to me. The idea is to maybe pursue a focus on character or scenario writing, but I... really don’t know, lol. I’m still largely clearing prerequisites and other structural graduation requirements, so I haven’t really dug into the focus areas of my degree yet and I definitely still doubt that I know what I’m doing or if it’ll genuinely be something I can pursue.

It’s definitely scary and I absolutely struggle with that uncertainty, but it’s also a process of just trying to remind myself that it’s a skill and therefore it is something I can develop if I put the work in - that’s the whole purpose of taking classes, after all. It’s something I’m trying to be more conscious of because I have found it very easy to slip into the student mindset of doing things just for class, so I’m still not sure what all I have as far as presentable skills or how to showcase them. But that is... off the base question, I suppose, lol.

neither, honestly? i go through phases where one thing suddenly becomes dramatically more difficult than anything else but i don’t think that among left/right/forward any one of them is easier than the other two

3. What ideas come from when you were little

4. Fav character/subject that’s a bitch to draw

i feel like each blorbo goes through a phase where they’re a bitch to draw but for subject... indoor settings are currently my big bitch to draw

i’ve never participated in a zine but i would love to someday....... and i tabled at an artist alley one (1) time at a convention that where the AA was more focused on commissioning (traditional) art than selling merch

Day 3: practice

I had to think about today, since starting this and thinking about love, I think about how to practice and integrate it in my day. I had gone to Backyard BBQ for lunch and as I was leaving, I realized it would have been a good opportunity to pay for someone's meal. I think about it when I hold a door open for someone or when it's held for me. I thought about love when my neighbor offered my some plant clippings and when I laid on the floor with Kiwi.

But today I want to make it a continuation of yesterday as art has been on my mind lately. I woke up still feeling grumpy and disgruntled by my art practice. It's a gray day, cloudy outside but not really raining and I felt tired. I got the idea then to go back to basics. I'm a digital artist, pretty much all of my work is done on my iPad and I mostly work on big pieces with coloring and shading and the whole deal. And while that's great and my art has developed with each piece, I need to do the work all people do: basics and fundamentals.

I'm a self-taught artist. I had a phone with a stylus and one night in bed I thought, I want to draw. So I started going to town drawing people, doing the line art, the coloring, the shading, each piece was a full completed piece. My art was not that great two years ago, I definitely learned a lot and gotten so much better with spacing and proportions. But I realized that I should put in the work and practice of doing timed figure drawings, doing doodles, making sketches, and practicing the anatomy, the clothing, the background basics.

I grabbed some pencils and paper I bought a few years ago and posted up on my couch where I went through timed poses. I got 90 seconds with each figure and just went to drawing as much as I could before the time was up. Some poses were definitely more difficult than others, but I had fun. Fun! That was something I felt like was missing from my art yesterday and that I just wanted to have fun. I feel like I fell in that trap in fandom where I needed to be producing completed works and my worth was based on what I could produce and how often. I lost the joy.

And I realize now that some of my art block stems from the need to be instantly perfect. Perfection was demanded by my mother, each of us kids were gifted and talented, we didn't need practice, we didn't make mistakes. Whatever we picked up, we were supposed to know how to do it with little instruction. I am the sort-of-youngest of four (I'm a twin) and it always looked like my two older siblings were amazing at everything they did. My brother was a marching band science genius, my sister was the artist and musician. I stayed in the shadows in technical theatre.

I didn't know how to ask for help, or how to ask someone to teach me x, y, or z. My grades were to be A+ in school and when I, the son of a math teacher, was getting a D in calculus, I was yelled at for not asking for help. It was shameful that I needed a tutor to get through chemistry and that I couldn't keep up with my peers in school who were already going to college for math as they had completed all the courses the school system offered.

I would find myself getting frustrated with hobbies. When I was in middle school, I thought I would make jewelry, but I felt my work wasn't as good as my mom's or sister's. I learned to knit and was great at it, but it got boring after a while. I learned to crochet, sew, needlepoint. I tried an instrument but I'm fairly tone deaf and can't read music. I picked up hobbies easily and mastered a lot quickly, I was great at knitting, origami, gardening, and video gaming.

So I realized that's why I was getting so frustrated with art. I could see I have talent and potential, I love getting to draw bodies and explore what it means to be trans and queer through art. I love making my blorbos kiss. One of my favorite things is to draw from fan fics to surprise writers, it makes my heart warm to see their excitement. And so it's okay to not be good at everything at once. What was that Jake quote from Adventure Time? Sucking is just the first step to getting good at something? So I'm giving myself this act of love of learning my craft and hobby by working on lessons and the basics and fundamentals.

Behold! The sketch for a sort of poster type thing i made in one of my sketchbooks. Debating wether or not i should ink it but im still proud of it regardless. I wanted to make it really busy and all over the place on purpose, i really like stuff like that. Also tried to add some more “stylized” bits, such as the video game items, the chibified/blorbo drawing, the kindve ominous part with the eyes.... the “school play” and “angelic heart” images were meant to resemble a polaroid photo and an edgy temporary tattoo respectively, and i wish i’d made that more clear in the actual image- i might digitize it at one point just so i can fix that aspect, lol. I also wish i’d added a bishoujo-esc anime eye shot too, in hindsight, but i guess the blorbo image is kindve an example of that.

All in all, pretty proud of this, especially the item descriptions- i had to come up with them on the fly and i think i came up with surprisingly good ones. I wanna do more stuff like this for my other OCs, but not many of them are really as.... thematically developed, i guess, in my mind as Angie/Salem is, so idk how well itd go. Who knows!! Maybe thisll be the push i need to fix em up and provide my little girl-thing with some proper friends and family (and.... perhaps RIVALS!!!). :3
