Netflix Renews 'One Piece' for a Second Season

Netflix has green-lit a second season for the live-action adaptation of "One Piece."

The renewal was announced on Netflix's social media platforms two weeks following the series' premiere.

The show draws its inspiration from the globally renowned manga and anime, "One Piece", chronicling the quests of Monkey D. Luffy, a youthful pirate in pursuit of the legendary One Piece treasure. Success would crown him the Pirate King.

Taking on the role of Luffy is Iñaki Godoy, with a star-studded ensemble featuring Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd portraying Nami, Jacob Romero as Usopp, and Taz Skylar as Sanji. Other notable cast members are Vincent Regan, Ilia Isorelýs Paulino, Morgan Davies, Aidan Scott, Langley Kirkwood, Jeff Ward, Celeste Loots, Alexander Maniatis, McKinley Belcher III, Craig Fairbrass, Steven Ward, and Chioma Umeala. The series boasts the creative minds of Matt Owens and Steven Maeda as its writers and executive producers, with the duo also taking the helm as show-runners. Eiichiro Oda, the original brain behind “One Piece”, joins the executive producer roster, collaborating with Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements from Tomorrow Studios. The show is a joint creation of Tomorrow Studios, Shueisha, and Netflix.

Given its stellar run on Netflix's top 10 charts over a fortnight and positive critiques, the renewal wasn't unexpected. Adelstein had hinted in a conversation with Variety about the completion of scripts for the next season. Clements added that viewers might expect the sequel in approximately a year to a year and a half.

Mindy Kaling’s Netflix Original ‘Never Have I Ever’ #1 on Netflix’s Top 10 List in over 10 Countries

I was absolutely stoked for Mindy Kaling’s new show ‘Never Have I Ever’ to debut on Netflix and even more stoked that it ended up being a total hit with Netflix’s audience base. Representation in the media has been an ongoing battle for many demographics and having new content come out with characters from all different backgrounds is a much needed change.

The show has been mentioned by students within our class but I had it on the top of my list of shows to watch before it even came out. I am so glad that it was widely advertised and that so many people were as excited about it as me. I think that I saw it advertised on Twitter and Netflix itself the most. I watched it in one sitting in the middle of the night the day that it came out.

As a white woman, I have seen a what seems like MILLIONS of the same shows portraying the same people and lifestyles on a seemingly endless repeat. To get to see more shows like this one produced, written by and starring Indian-Americans is super awesome and I have seen a lot more representation for all demographics finally making it into mainstream media. To know that it was Netflix’s #1 show in the Top 10 category in over 10 countries and was Netflix’s #1 watched show in the world when it debuted shows that the audience is feeling the same way that I am. Representation is so important.

In connection to our class, I find that all of our texts have raised awareness of key issues involving stereotyping, yellow peril, orientalism and more within our country. They represent what Asian-American people have to go through in terms of being stereotyped on a daily basis and part of that is from misinformation and not enough representation. It is so important for everyone, especially white people, to be informed and exposed to other demographics, cultures, ways of thinking, etc. This show took be directly to Sejal Shah’s essay, “Things People Said: An Essay in 7 Steps” and the types of stereotypes and harassment that she faced in everyday life. The show also touches a lot on colorism. However, this show is way more than that. It includes those issues and discussions while also showing a young girls coming-of-age story and navigating every day life as an Indian-American girl. I highly recommend it and think that it was much needed content during this time!
