5 REASONS WHY IT IS THE GREATEST SHOW, MAN.
By Robert Torsney - 15 February 2019.
"It's everything you ever want
It's everything you ever need
And it's here right in front of you
This is where you wanna be"
Well, this is where I wanna be anyway. Without a shadow of doubt,
The Greatest Showman will go down as one of my all-time favorite musicals. I could even be as bold to say that it will go down as one of my all-time favorite movies.
Based on the life of P.T. Barnum, a showman from the 1800's and founder of Barnum and Bailey circus, the film combines the benefits of perseverance, imagination, and self-discovery into a theatrical display of thrill and wonder. Kudos to Michael Gracey (Director), Jenny Bicks (Writer) and Bill Condon (Writer) for gracing us with this musical extravaganza.
From the outset, I was hooked. I was submerged for the entirety of the 106-minute cinematic display of excellence. My breath was taken from the opening number, and I didn't get it back until the end. Let me explain why with five simple reasons:
1. A CELEBRATION OF HUMANITY
Barnum made everybody equal, despite the vast complexity of differences in human nature. His characteristic traits of determination and perseverance, humor and sincerity are those which humanity as a whole could do well to develop more of. This underlying theme isn't evidently prevalent from the beginning with Barnum appearing to be more focused on earning some quick cash and boosting his own self-esteem. However, the progression of the film shows the ensemble of 'oddities' and 'freaks' who Barnum recruited becoming increasingly confident as they celebrated their individuality rather than shying away from their insecurities. Rather than extraditing those who are different, The Greatest Showman teaches us to embrace uniqueness - an important lesson for us all.
2. QUALITY SOUNDTRACK
From the duo behind 'City of Stars' from La La Land, we have been gifted with a soundtrack which I haven't been able to pull myself away from since first watching the movie. Each song different to the last, each incorporating a real-world story into the film.
The High School Musical saga proved viewers still sought self-empowered anthems performed by personable-looking people. The Greatest Showman further enlivened this sense of self-empowerment with some uprooted beats to really immerse the viewer in a euphoric state with the least complication possible. As I watched this film, I lost track of time, yet I didn't care - I never wanted it to end.
Although I did love Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, I believe his true calling lies in musical performance. Playing alongside the heart-throb that is Zac Efron, the pair, together with their diverse cast of spectacular human-beings, busted out a multitude of catchy, infectious tunes which dominated the UK charts in 2018.
3. AN EMOTIONAL ROLLER-COASTER
"You don't need everyone to love you, you just need a few good people" - Charity Barnum.
Right in the feels, every time.
Throughout the movie, we transition between excitement, hope, heartache, pride, and happiness. Even though a different emotion is triggered every few minutes, The Greatest Showman is one of the most inspirational films I have seen. The variety of emotions are activated through vivid lyrics which allow for us to relate to the film on a deeper level.
The contrast between the predominantly feel-good, heartwarming theme of the movie to scenes such as Barnum's departure for a world tour with Miss Lind, leaving his wife and two daughters behind, or the humiliating exclusion of his acts from the dinner, brings viewers on an emotional ride.
4. A WAY WITH WORDS
"The noblest art is that of making others happy” - P.T. Barnum
Inspirational. Memorable.
The Greatest Showman full of inspiring messages of chasing dreams and accepting people for who they really are. The film will inject a positive boost in your life that will leave you feeling empowered and ready to take on the world.
Scenes like that when Barnum and his wife, Charity, play with their daughters together on the roof in their small apartment convey that happiness is not about having money - It is about how we support each other no matter what the condition. This feel-good feeling is reinforced throughout the film time and time again by the virtue of the magical language used by the writers.
5. THE IMPORTANCE OF FAMILY
"This isn't the life I promised you. I promised you a life of magic and wonder." - P.T. Barnum.
My heart has never been so full. Although the film is set hundreds of years ago, the story is perhaps more relevant to today than ever before. Not only are the characters incredibly gifted with talent, but they help to teach us to accept and celebrate each others' individual differences.
Barnum and Charity love both each other and their children with compassion. When times were dark, Barnum found light in his family. Family is the fundamental foundation on which this circus was built. Even when Miss Lynd attempts to seduce Barnum, he refuses. This film reminds us that family is everything and that we must be grateful through thick and thin.
