One of the first attempts I made on using any form of Machine Learning was a simple Neural Style Transfer with Satellite images. It is a very straightforward way of testing the abilities of a Neural Network regarding feature recognition. This series that you see below tested the abilities of Diffusion Models such as Midjourney to construct urban textures based on text imput. In particular using V4 of Midjourney. Every time a new version comes out, it is one of the first tests I do. I always thought it is amusing that Midjourney has 'trouble' recreating the orthogonal view from space. Either there are not a lot of satellite images in the dataset, or the weights in Midjourney are set to prefer spatial representations instead of orthogonal ones. Let me know your thoughts. In this series of images, the morphology of the imagery is shaped by a 'tropical forest'. Greenhouse that transforms from transparent to opaque. AI and Architecture One of the most compelling abilities of Midjourney is the proposition of variations. The most human act in Midjourney is, apart from the inductive language, the option to choose. Why do you choose a particular image over another? Most of the time these are split second decisions. How is our mind trained to do these esthetical decisions so fast? Alexandra Carlson once pointed out to me that in contrast to artificial Neural Networks our organic networks are trained for years instead of hours or days. We make the decision of which image to pick based on this training. Education, exposure to a certain culture and imprint by family and friends (see Konrad Lorenz for more info) form a major part of why a specific Neural connection in our mind let's us choose one over the other picture. This in itself presents an Ontological framework for an discoursive interrogation of a novel toolsets, able to inspire architectural debate. This novel debate contains elements of estrangement (as in the artistic technique proposed by Shklovsky, and used by for example Brecht and Jean-Luc Goddard) the uncanny (Freud) and other methods that introduce abstraction into everyday situations and objects. He rather converses with the multiple DNA biomolecular-electronic encoder and decoder devices constructed by multiplex biosensors, which he helped develop. The humming of the machines sounds like a concert in the Musikverein in Vienna to him, one of the things he admittedly misses in the solitude of the high Alps. The new --chaos command in Midjourney is quite a cool feature, in combination with --stylize it can induce normative Morphologies with enough estrangement to heighten the observers attention. This speaks to one of the major Neuroscientific elements in various networks. Before Diffusions models exploded into the scene in the summer of 2022, there were AttnGANs (Attentional Generative Adversarial Networks). Those models were for example trained on the COCO dataset (Common Objects in Context). These NN’s were OK for feature recognition, but rather poor in their Generative abilities. (At least compared to current Diffusion models). This being said, I do appreciate the --chaos command, as it allows to infuse imagery with the defamiliarized aspects that I so covet.
