interesting that, of all the AI topics you could get mad at (deepfakes and revengeporn, people intentionally going out of their way to ignore wishes of artists who ask people not to use their art in it, whatever), tumblr users choose to instead become enraged over AI-generated cats and meme art.

straycatj is not personally ruining the lives of every artist alive by posting an AI made image (that she made for fun) one (1) time. it is not stealing from artists if you generate gay sex cats memes instead of paying someone irl to make it for you. AI discourse went from reasonable concerns to "if you ever generate an AI image, it is akin to letting artists starve in the street, and you are evil" really quick, and ignores, like, every previous "acceptable" AI trend on tumblr (since people now looooove to pretend that "early" AI generation wasn't popular, i fuckin guess).

i miss when the extent of generative ai was just neuralblender. there was something special there. the pictures were unique bc a human couldnt have made them. art can help show how the world is seen through someone elses eyes. we asked "if computers could make art, what kind of art would they make" and neuralblender is the answer to that. thats how the world "looks" to a computer, so to speak. these fully trained ais dont actually make anything new or interesting, they just replicate whats given to them. when they arent given much of anything, thats when you start getting things worth looking at. cuz the computer is actually making something, that can only be made by a computer. its the computers art. also like, as an artist, one of the things i loved about it the most was that since so many of the pictures were vague and conceptual, i could take inspiration from them and make an entirely original piece. and it would be entirely original because another artist could look at the same thing and come up with something else. awesome for art block. but what do i know. maybe im wrong and it was no different than whatever we have now. shrug.

the worst part about ai art is that its fun. i like seeing what an algorithm like that makes of ridiculous things like "presidental centipede making a public appearence in lazytown" or "xenomorph business meeting" and stuff but instead the models have to be mostly built off stolen art and images and ppl pass it on as their own work

Just because you can feel someone's suffering doesn't mean you're entitled to fix things for them. It doesn't mean you've to suffer through it for them. You can be kind and still let them handle it by themselves. Loving someone doesn't mean you've to carrying their trauma on your head. I'm not saying don't go helping around, but first prioritise your mental health. Okay?
