Gothic tropes (…) have increasingly been applied to mundane or familiar settings, such as suburbia or high school corridors, in order to enhance their disruptive effects.

This is an example of defamiliarization, a concept used by the Russian formalists as the underlying root of art. It makes us consider a familiar thing in a new, unfamiliar way, and gives us a fresh perspective on it.

Depicting Abuse in Fiction
This week I read an essay by Christopher Noël titled “Keeping Open the Wounds of Possibility: The Marvelous, the Uncanny, and the Fantastic in Fiction.” It was an approachable, hands-on review of ideas from the Russian Formalists (especially defamiliarization) and Wolfgang Iser (especially the reader and author co-creating the text). But I liked it most for helping me clarify some of my…

🔥 programming
Unpopular Opinion/Hot Take: Programming is so beautifully fascinating to me. We as humans evolved to create an abstraction of "I have said yes or no a few million times in the last second, which means that now the cute wolfman that I have created for you to have Conversations with has taken out his junk"
#i think its called derealization or something? EDIT: ITS DEFAMILIARIZATION#when you describe something as its most basic form#i probably got the name wrong#but i love doing that#it helps you realize just how awesome people are

I love defamiliarization. Like here's a good one:
Imagine an eldritch tome, constantly surrounded by guards, with solely one person ordained to be able to read it, but only for a few years at a time before another is chosen. The tome is bewitched so that any unordained cannot read it, even if they managed to steal it.
This tome, if properly read, can summon a rare kind of cursed fire, capable of causing immeasurable destruction anywhere on Earth. Depending on the structure of the invocations it could even be called forth in a manner to kill nearly all living humans.
I am of course talking about the nuclear football.
did you know? there is a type of metal chariot, powered by the bone-ichor of ancient dragons, that you can use to access—and quickly traverse—a labyrinthine realm of desolate, pitch-black stone known to scientists as “the american highway system”

I really love how you write Draco and Ron.
Because Draco is in love with Hermione, and it’s easy for him to love Harry (and Draco loves him, fiercely), but then with Ron there is this feeling. For some reason, whenever I see lionheart!Ron from lionheart!Draco’s point of view, it’s almost like Ron is shrouded in golden light, but also Draco is so Not Allowed to Feel Things for a Weasley.
But like what if you had a friend who is ready to share EVERYTHING he has with you, and he has precious little things, and none of it you were taught is Important TM, but he has so much love that you’ve never seen this much love in your life, and he is so bold and open with, just like you are bold and open with power and money. And what if he only liked to give things and never take anything. And what if he was the most stubborn asshole in the world but also the funniest and smartest person in the world at the same time. And what if your father hated his father, but his father called you his without hesitation, because this friend can give you even that. And his brothers are your brothers. And his mother is your mother. And what if by accepting it you betrayed your dead father and alive mother, but also survived.
And also what if you fell in love with the same girl. And he doesn’t even believe that you love her and suspects that you are just playing, thus withdrawing that love and trust that he has been giving you for five years?
Unfortunate!
Unfortunate!! As is the fact that I'm going to walk outside and lie down in the street and howl! Thanks!!
#greenteacup asks#lionheart spoilers#man get your ass onto ao3 and hit 'new work.' reads this good you need to start writing#me out here like 'OH NO! IT'S THE THING I WROTE! BUT DEFAMILIARIZED!'

the longer you went without sleep, the more you waved off the things you saw in the sky as a trick of your tired eyes. you could've sworn you saw the outline of a ribcage in the air, suspended for a moment, gleaming white with starlight, until it disappeared again. and then you saw it again, except this time it was diving at you, a creature with leathery wings and glowing green eyes. it was the same colour as the pitch-night sky, but its own bone stretched out over its skin, meeting claws and pointed teeth in unholy union. and it screamed, a horrid piercing scream, and others appeared at its side.
when you escaped it was back the next night, with more. they were gone in the daylight, but the darkness was plagued with monsters scrabbling at your windows, screeching by the tens and then the dozens as you held a weapon to your chest throughout the night, still too frightened to try and sleep, as there were monsters nearby, always monsters nearby-- yeah man a couple years ago no one told me minecraft added phantoms so that was kinda how it went
