Finally a Ravenpaw/flight design! I sketched a few concepts yesterday and ended with his fluffy back legs to bring more bird rep to them. They resemble Scourge a lot so go check it’s design out. So here’s my design and how he looks in new au I’m making!
-They have a sorta shag cut that covers most of the left side of his face. Also various wing markings on the left side of their face and on their back. His left paw is also white, which will be important to another post in finishing up
-The second image is with his bandanna which he’d have for canon Raven. I hc they just dropped his paw suffix when they left so he’s hair Raven with Barley.
-Purple toned black with darker coloring on their back legs, hair, and ears. I think he’s a little taller then Fire and Gray but still pretty small for TC cats
-Raven in the Mirror (name pending) au is called Ravenflight when he joins back into TC. They cry when Squilf is named after him (credit to @doritopaw101 for putting this idea in my head)
-Hc wise in both canon and the au they are non-binary using he/they and gay ace. While in the au Squilf and Leaf are both his, Sands, and Fire’s kits they are still ace. For the au they are also a kittypet born cat that was taken in by some TC queen after he was found all alone, Dustkit being his adopted littermate tho the two weren’t close ever
(ID- Raven is a standing to the left, their head slightly tilted to the right with eyes round and face sorta off putting. He is a black cat with purple toned colored and white markings. His eyes are round and purple with yellow sclera and dull purple inside their ears and nose. Black goes on their hair, mullet, ears, down his back, chest, back legs, and under their left eye in a small wing pattern. White is under his right eye in a hidden wing shape, on the left side of their face in a wing marking, tail tip, back of their front paws, whole of their left leg, toes of his back paws, and on their back in a wing pattern. They are sleek with patches of very ruffled messy fur on their neck, tail, back end, and paws. In the second image they have a purple bandanna and beside him is how their left leg looks. The faint signature “Nightly Ruse” is on his side. End ID)

The Scottish Boy by Alex de Campi - 5/5 stars
This book managed to rip my heart out at least 3 times. I loved it. Medieval enemies-to-lovers slow burn; very romantic. Kinda read like fanfiction at times but in a good way. 10/10 would read a follow-up love story about Arundel and Captain Wekena. If you like Captive Prince, give this one a try.
Reforged by Seth Haddon - 4/5 stars
Pretty good bodyguard romantasy. Ironically CS Pacat blurbed this one (another am-I-in-the-matrix moment). The world was interesting and I enjoyed the politics, though they're definitely not as complicated as other SFF politics I've gone feral over (see: Captive Prince, Winter's Orbit, A Memory Called Empire). I ordered the sequel after I finished this.
The Doctor's Date by Heidi Cullinan - 4/5 stars
A Power Unbound by Freya Marske - 5/5 stars
Where do I start? I love, love, LOVE A Marvellous Light. It's one of my favorite books ever. None of the rest of the books in the trilogy could live up to it, really, because it's so good. You'll notice I rated this one 5 stars though, because quite honestly I fell prey to a bit of The Academy Paying The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Its Due syndrome. I did love this book and thought it was better than A Restless Truth (which I still loved!) but part of that is, quite frankly, just due to the fact that I prefer m/m romance to f/f romance.
Anyway. This was such a good finale to the trilogy. I loved that the romance was a giant middle finger to purity cultists. I loved that one of the mains was Italian. I loved finally getting the story of what happened to the Alston twins. One thing I thought was really cool was how, viewed from the outside, you totally get why Edwin is such a loner. I really admire from a writing perspective how Marske pulled that off.
I feel like there's a lot to be said about what Marske was trying to SAY with this book, but I definitely need to reread it first before I can articulate any of it. The purity culture stuff is obvious, but the magic system too. I feel like Jack when he's almost able to connect everything in his mind into a bigger idea, but he can't quite get there.
I've got a special edition from Illumicrate coming, so I'll be rereading it when I have that.
Oh also, this book was the embodiment of all that one tumblr post -
Tumblr media
The Guncle by Steven Rowley - 5/5 stars
I saw this in bookstores for years before I finally gave in and bought it. The blurb makes it sound insufferable and twee. Ignore the blurb. This was such a good book about grief and learning how to live again after terrible loss.
I Like Me Better by Robby Weber - 4/5 stars
At last I can stop getting the Lauv song stuck in my head whenever I set eyes on this book (it's stuck in my head as I type this). Pretty standard-issue YA, but it was cute and had a good message.
The Stagsblood King by Gideon E Wood - 4/5 stars
Another book about moving on from grief! This is the second book in a trilogy. When I was trying to determine if I wanted to read on beyond book 1, I scoured the internet for information about what happens in books 2 and 3. Eventually I decided, hell, I enjoyed book 1 well enough, even if what I want to happen in the rest of the trilogy doesn't happen, they're worth reading. SO, to that end, I will tell anyone looking for info that Tel gets romantically involved with a new man in this one, which, eh. I still want him to somehow end up with Vared. It was still quite good though.
In the Lives of Puppets by TJ Klune - DNF at pg 82
So funnily, we were at the bookstore the day I was about to start reading this, and my wife pointed out Ravensong (also by Klune) to me and said, "Do you have this one?" I made a face and said, "That's an older one of his books and I'm wary of his early work after that horrible Verania series. I don't think I've ever read an author as hit or miss as TJ Klune."
I wrote the above when I was 60 pages in and now I have officially DNFed this. Listen. You know how in Thor: Love and Thunder, Taika Waititi was clearly given free rein to do whatever he wanted, so all of his worst impulses made it to the final cut unchecked? Yeah. That's what this book is like.
Here's my Storygraph review: I see Klune is officially Too Big To Edit now. This book has exactly the same problem that his awful Verania series had—a joke that's funny at first but quickly grows tiresome when it's repeated five times per page. The emphasis on Victor's asexuality was also weird and read like Klune was just super proud of himself for writing an ace character.
Lion's Legacy by LC Rosen - 4.25/5 stars
Queer, YA Indiana Jones, but less #problematic. This book had some eerie similarities to my own archaeology adventure novel(s), which made me wonder half-seriously if I somehow know Lev Rosen? Anyway, I feared this would be very heavy-handed and not nuanced on archaeology's ethical dilemmas, since it's YA and also the current culture is to view said dilemmas as completely black and white with no nuance, but I was pleasantly surprised. It manages to examine that, queerness, and daddy issues, plus has time to be a genuinely fun and exciting adventure story. Highly recommend.
Too White to be Coloured, Too Coloured to be Black by Ismail Lagardien - 4/5 stars
I picked up this memoir in a bookstore at OR Tambo airport in Johannesburg as research for Six Places to Fall in Love, since Percy is coloured. A pretty brutal read, but good, and definitely good research. The author was a photographer and journalist through the most violent years of apartheid.
The Splendid and the Vile by Erik Larson - 5/5 stars
Two nonfiction books in a row?? This is the second book by Erik Larson I've read, the first being the excellent The Devil in the White City. I'm not, in general, all that interested in WWII when it comes to military history, but this book is about the day to day lives of Churchill and the people surrounding him (with brief stops to visit FDR and high-ranking Nazis sprinkled throughout). This is a very, very good book, and I recommend reading it if only as a reminder of the resilience and bravery of ordinary people under terrifying circumstances.
Some Desperate Glory by Emily Tesh - 5/5 stars
Holy shit. Holy shit is this book good. Imagine the love child of Lost, Person of Interest, and Battlestar Galactica, but queer and with multiverse shenanigans thrown in.
I need everyone to read this book. Now. Yesterday. Get to it.

CURRENT ASK GAME
Tagged by @lurkingshan mostly so she can troll me about one of these questions.
Current time: 8:22 am
Current activity: Having breakfast and rolling into my workday.
Currently thinking about: My first time hanging out with a friend in person in months and brunch logistics for tomorrow.
Current favorite song: Meme choice is Planet of the Bass, which I love unironically. I've been returning to Golden Ears a lot though.
youtube
Currently reading: Ravensong, the second book in the Green Creek series by TJ Klune since @lurkingshan's commentary has me back in my Bennett Pack feels. I'm also working ahead on Strength of Thousands for my Pathfinder table. I'm also about to start The Fight Within by Andrew Grey at @lutawolf's suggestion.
Currently watching: Shan pinged me for this just so make me type the entire list of shit I'm watching because she is a villain.
Currently airing shows I'm watching: Be Mine SuperStar, Dangeros Romance, Hidden Agenda, I Feel You Linger in the Air, Jun & Jun, Kiseki: Dear to Me, Laws of Attraction, Love Class 2, Love in Translation, Minato's Laundromat 2, My Universe, Only Friends, Stay by My Side, Taikan Yoho (aka My Personal Weatherman), Wedding Plan (Bonus episode next week), Why R U? (Korea)
Shows about to start this weekend: Naughty Babe, Venus in the Sky

Friends and I also watch a movie every Saturday mostly uninterupted for the past four years. Last week we watched The Long Walk (2019), a Mattie Do horror film from Laos. It's very good. This week we're either watching Sisu (2023) or Vikram (2022).
ARE YOU SATISFIED, SHAN???
Tumblr media
Current favorite character: This question is hard. It's probably Minato from Minato's Laundromat because I get him. Also probably Segasaki from My Personal Weatherman.
Current WIP: I have been kicking around a post on how I introduced my friend Emily to BL and turned her into a regular viewer as a guide for some of the new folks. It's super short, but it feels like I'm missing something.
Tagging @shortpplfedup just because I know she's busy, @ginnymoonbeam because she's always secretly watching something and I'm curious, and @warningtothecurious just because I still see you around and want to wave.

Mid-Year Book Freakout Tag
Didn't get tagged or anything but I've been meaning to do this one for years. So time to actually do it lol
Amount of books you’ve read so far:
Currently at 103!
Best book you’ve read so far in 2024:
Duncton Wood by William Horwood, Wolf by Kristof Smeyers or Speciocide by Robert-Jan Trügg. One fantasy xenofiction and two non-fictions about animals/nature.
Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2024:
Ravensong by T.J. Klune, a very good sequel to an already-good first book.
New release you haven’t read yet, but want to:
The Lightning Path by Erin Hunter, can't wait to see how Bamboo Kingdom continues.
Most anticipated release for the second half of the year:
Realm of Lost Spirits by Erin Hunter, the last Bravelands book! Also possibly book six of Bamboo Kingdom, but I personally don't think it'll release in 2024. We don't have an official release date yet, though.
Favorite new author (debut or new to you):
Ayana Gray for the Beast of Prey trilogy which I ended up really liking.
Biggest surprise:
Probably against Duncton Wood which I ended up liking much more than I initially anticipated based on my kind-of dislike of The Wolves of Time. Not that I was going in expecting to dislike it of course, but I was a bit wary.
Book that made you happy:
Rewilding by Paul Jepson because it's a rather positive look at nature and the environment's future. Yes there's a lot of bad shit going on right now, too, but there are good efforts being made to fix this and we shouldn't forget about those.
Newest fictional crush/newest favorite character:
Definitely Henbane from Duncton Wood. This series in general has some really well-written characters but Henbane is the pinnacle of that if you ask me.
Book that made you cry:
I don't really cry when reading even at emotional books, but Speciocide it make me feel a real melancholy unmatched by any other books this year.
If crying while laughing counts I guess you could say My Immortal though because yeah that's still the funniest piece of fiction of all time. (Also yes this counts as a book. I own a physical copy of it)
Most beautiful book you’ve bought or received this year so far:
I presume this means nice cover art? I still really like the covers of my editions of the Green Creek series, so I'm gonna have to go with Heartsong.
Tumblr media
Book you need to read by the end of the year:
Several, including Heartsong, Bamboo Kingdom book five and Bravelands book six. Also whatever Warriors release comes out next because spoilers are impossible to avoid.
I'd also like to get fully caught up to the German book series Animox (Simon Thorn in English) by the end of the year.
I tag nobody but if anyone wants to do this feel free!

Whats Ravensong doing with the leaf in the new design? Love it btw
I imagine he's acting out some sort of heroic ritual from whatever story he's telling .o. Or maybe teaching the FrostLion kids an old ritual done during fall to promise good hunting in the winter?

Seraph Records Artist Profile - EA
Emilie Autumn
Voices calling from across the sky, singing stars, towers scaled by the aid of a maiden's hair… To most, these are the figments of fairy tales. To one, once upon a time is real. To Emilie Autumn, once upon a time is now.
Richly talented, multifaceted, innovative, eclectic and unconventional - singer, songwriter, producer, and world class violinist Emilie Autumn is that rarest of musical breeds…a true original.
This is a singer with the power to change the world of rock music as we know it. Whether she is writing and performing original songs that bring together an extraordinary mix of sounds and styles; performing concerts in the great classical music halls of Europe and the US; or bringing down the house with her own electrifying violin rock creations, 20 year old Emilie Autumn makes music that defies categories, breaks down barriers and builds a bridge to the new millennium with a truly globe-spanning sound.
The proof is on glorious display with Emilie Autumn's dazzling debut album "Enchant", featuring such standout tracks as the hip-hop "How Strange", a rapid-fire view of mankind's lack of respect for the supernatural; "Chambermaid", a scathing rock track utilizing renaissance imagery and backed by Emilie's electric fiddle wizardry, and the haunting ballad "What If", featuring a heartbreaking violin performance.
Along with Emilie's distinctive vocals which fluctuate between preternaturally mature soul singer and sultry siren, her debut album highlights her mastery of several instruments including an array of violins, piano, harpsichord, and her own invention, the fiddleguitar. Also an accomplished visual artist, Emilie's work is featured on the album sleeve which includes the Enchant Puzzle, the first ever album-based mystery puzzle of its kind, complete with a magnificent prize for the first person to solve it. With 14 tracks of groundbreaking variety Emilie Autumn's stunning new album heralds the arrival of a major young artist and the very beginning of a brilliant career.
That career was fortold virtually from the cradle when Emilie, a native of Malibu, California, was raised in a highly unconventional family that stressed artistic freedom and self-expression. Attending school only up until her ninth birthday, she educated herself, making her knowledge of literature and her formidable abilities as a writer and poet even more astounding.Evincing an early and impressive ability on the violin, playing everything from a wide classical repertoire to electric Hendrix-influenced jazz, Emilie enrolled in the prestigious Colburn School of Performing Arts at age ten. It was during this period that she began to experiment with a free form improvisational approach to her instrument, taking her cue from internationally renown virtuoso Nigel Kennedy, who later met and became friends with the fledgling artist.
Far too free-spirited for the formal strictures of school, Emilie began playing professionally at age 12, touring the UK. Although she attracted critical and popular raves for her mastery of classical violin, Emilie was already moving into new musical realms, polishing her vocal skills by listening to Jo Stafford and writing songs that recall the sophisticated styles of Annie Lennox and Sting. At the same time, she began her lifelong exploration into medieval, renaissance and baroque music, becoming one of the youngest champions of the period performance movement and earning a classical recording deal by age 18.
Never content to sit still, this young prodigy had already formed her own renaissance rock band, Ravensong, and regularly pack house on the Hollywood club circuit. At 15, Emilie won a place at top music conservatory, Indiana University, but eventually left school when her unorthodox music and by now notorious fashion sense, a disturbing mix of corsets and combat boots, clashed with the university authorities. Refusing to cut her knee-length red hair, Emilie went on to further explore and expand her musical vocabulary, writing rock, jazz, and symphonic originals and, on occasion, even conducting the orchestras that would perform her work.
Lending her compositional talents to film scores, Emilie recently started to bring her music to a wider audience. Prodded by friends in the recording industry to record some vocal demos, Emilie went into the studio to record three songs and emerged with the beginnings of ''Enchant", her self-produced debut album available from Seraph Records. The music remains as paradoxical as Emilie herself, blending electronics with instruments from the 16th century, celestial imagery with ferocious outbursts. Emilie sings, "See beyond the moment, think beyond the day…", and, with this collection of songs penned while still in her teens, cleverly combines the angst of her generation with the transcendental philosophies necessary for growth. The result announces, in no uncertain terms, the arrival of a mesmerizing young artist with creative horizons that enchant listeners and reach to the stars.
Emilie Autumn: a new season of great music has arrived.

A lille style change! Whadda ya think?
Here's a Tigerstar design for an au I have been developing. I have a lot of aus and I'll probably talk about most of them I think.
In this particular au, the badness of Starclan is amped up quite a bit. There's an inner circle of cats from dotc that handle all the prophecies and instruct cats dead and alive on what to do. Initially, they took this job seriously but after being alive for many moons, they became bored and cynical so they just started messing with the living cats with fake prophecies and stuff for their own entertainment.
So the "fire alone" prophecy still exists and Tigerclaw(who looks more like an actual tiger in this au) hears of this prophecy from Bluestar since she discusses things like this with trusted cats. Tigerclaw thinks this prophecy is about him since he's basically the only one in the clan with fire coloured fur.
When Rusty comes along, he feels threatened because he has fire coloured fur and seems to be pretty promising for a kittypet. So to protect "his prophecy", he attacks Firepaw and chases him out. Firepaw was the intended prophecy cat so the Starclan Council is taken aback but they quickly form a plan and decide to mess with Tigerclaw instead. They tell him that he's the prophecy cat and he's on the right path n stuff. They direct him to killing Redtail and Bluestar, driving out Yellowfang when he becomes leader, bringing in Bloodclan, and other stuff. A lot of the things he did with hesitancy but he did it because Starclan told him to.
So he successfully unifies the Clans and has Scourge as deputy. Most cats aren't happy with the new system and Tigerstar is ordered to get rid of those who rise against him by execution or exile.
Eventually, Ravensong (who becomes a medicine cat in this au), Greystripe, Sandstorm, and Dustpelt tell everyone about Tigerstar's crimes to become leader. Scourge kills him and takes over his place as leader. He is a more ruthless leader than Tigerstar.
Tigerstar wakes up in a middle ground between Starclan and the Dark forest. He asks Starclan why things ended up the way they did if he did exactly what they said. The council reveals that they've been manipulating him for their own entertainment and they throw him into the dark forest with the other cats they've manipulated. Tigerstar feels betrayed and he hardens his heart towards Starclan. He vows to never rest until the council has been taken down.
I don't wanna spoil much buuuut Tigerstar in his afterlife finds cats he wronged irl and apologises and gets them to join his rebellion like Firepaw and Goldenflower and his kits. He also bands with some other ex Starclan cats (Bluestar, Redtail, and Lionheart are the main ones) and they all rebel against the Starclan Council and take down Bloodclan.
I'll go into more detail later but I hope you find it interesting! Good night, all!
