Summary: Red Son is the son of an old empire, Mei is the daughter of a new one. Red Son, consumed by fire, was put into an induced stasis sleep to stop the world from burning until his family can find a way to safely remove the fire. They find a way but he never wakes up. Hundreds of years later he awakes to discover his power resides within another as she stares at him with wide eyes on fire.

Their landing was awkward. 
Red Son ended up at the bottom of the pile with his face pressed into the floor with the other two on top of him. He knew immediately the destination was wrong when he felt wooden floorboards rather than dusty ash against his cheek. 
They had landed somewhere they weren’t supposed to. 
“Get off.” Red Son attempted to throw the two mortals off him and was kicked in the face twice by Mk before he managed to shove them both off onto the floor. “Idiots.” 
He lifted his head to look around and found they’d landed in a theatre of some kind. It was empty but the lights were on, bringing a warm sort of atmosphere. 
“Uh,” said Mei, with Mk draped over her lap like a limp rag-doll. “Hey, Samadhi Sifu… I think you took a wrong turn.” 
“I didn’t do anything,” Red Son spat. “Some idiot hijacked my portal.” He pushed himself to his feet, cursing under his breath. “They never would have been able to do so if I was at my full strength.” He straightened up after brushing small bits of gold dust from that shattered plate off his hanfu. It didn’t matter much due to the fact it was already covered in soot, but that couldn’t be helped. Merciful Buddha, he wanted a bath. 
“Ow,” said Mk, like he was the one who had gotten kicked in the face. Mei patted his back. 
Red Son glanced around the theatre. It was mostly built from wood. At first glance it appeared to be new, but the closer he looked the more blemishes and broken things there were. It was an old theatre. The curtains were threadbare. There were chips in the wood. The lanterns only lit the space dimly, just bright enough to create shadows without really lighting all that much. All the seats faced a massive white screen at the head of the room. It reminded Red Son of a shadow puppet screen, only much, much bigger. 
“We’ve got another thirty minutes here until my spell kicks back in,” Red Son said, glancing around for the doors or at least some sort of exit. He heard shuffling behind him and turned to see Mk falling off of Mei’s lap and face down onto the floor before popping back up, sitting cross-legged next to her. 
“Well, at least there’s no spooky monkey here,” Mei said. 
Upon being reminded of what exactly they’d been, not running, but retreating from, Red Son’s ire at whoever had portal-jacked him was washed over and drowned out by a very different sort of feeling. 
Mk and Mei seemed content to stay on the ground as Red Son started to pace in front of them. He muttered under his breath. 
Mk looked pale. Red Son had no doubt he’d be looking even paler if he’d known just who had been reaching for him. 
Red Son feared nothing. Not death, not life, and no living being. 
But his hands were shaking. 
From the cold, he hissed to himself through gritted teeth. He would never have been shaking if he had his fire. He wouldn’t be so vulnerable if he had it. The white lady hadn’t seemed like a threat at first. She seemed a mild annoyance at best. He couldn’t sense any massive power coming from her, so how did she manage to get to him? He needed to rethink. Reevaluate. He needed to think. He needed to get his fire back or they were going to die. 
“Well, well! That was quite a show!” 
Red Son’s head snapped back to look where the voice was coming from. It seemed to bounce and echo over the walls, coming from nowhere and everywhere at once. Shadows seemed to tilt, getting darker, stretching further.
Mei was on her feet in an instance, Mk scrambling up close behind her, staggering a lot more. 
The shadows seemed to converge on the stage, onto the screen rising up like ink until a shape was painted across it and then received form. 
It was a shadow puppet. 
A monkey. Merciful Buddha, Red Son had seen enough monkeys already today. Its mouth had been cut into a wide, unnerving smile, stretching over nearly half its face. 
"I see you all met the Lady Bone Demon's puppet.” The puppet slumped sideways, limp, head tilting to almost upside down. It was strange. It moved in a way shadow puppets normally didn’t, to Red Son’s knowledge. 
Red Son scoffed, folding his arms over his chest. “You look more like the puppet here.” 
“Oho!” said the shadow puppet. “Good-” it flipped, revealing its other side, where the only difference was there was an slashed X in the place its eyes should have been, “--eye.” The puppet laughed. It doubled over with shrieking laughter at an awkward angle that didn’t look right. 
Red Son found himself recoiling a bit. The thing sounded insane. Granted not as insane as him when he laughed, his cackle was much more impressive. 
Out of the corner of his eye Red Son saw Mk grab Mei’s arm. 
“Mei,” Mk said, his voice slightly shaky, urgent, “that sounds like-” 
“I know,” Mei said, her voice grave, on edge. 
“What are you two talking about?” Red Son snapped. 
“Is that the Dragon Heir I see?” The puppet twisted itself as though it were hanging upside down from a branch. Sure enough the shadow of a tree rose up to assist the illusion. “And another puppet!” Its smile looked almost thrilled looking at Mk. “Isn't this all just so interesting? But who’s the third? I’ve never seen you before.” It dropped back down, into more of an animalistic, unnatural crawl. The shadow seemed to grow bigger as it crawled towards them, but it never moved off the screen. 
“Who I am is none of the business of the likes of you,” Red Son said. “You know very well who you brought here. So cut the theatrics and state your business or we will burn your little theatre to the ground and you along with it.” 
The puppet seemed to find that very funny, laughing and twisting. Red Son could feel something in the wood of this place. Something in the shadows growing thicker and moving. 
“Oh, but the show is the best part!” 
Mk cried out. 
Red Son spun around to see shadows wrapping around his ankles and wrists. They lashed out around his arms binding him tightly and then pulled before any of them could react. 
“Mk!” Mei yelled, reaching for him. She grabbed his wrist just before he was pulled into the shadows. 
The rings lit. Mei practically spat out fire. “Let go of him.”
“There’s the famous fire!” The puppet seemed to smile wider, bigger, it sounded like it was a twisted form of excitement. “What a performance you gave that day!” 
The strands of shadow snapped when Mei’s fire neared it and she caught Mk before pulling him to his feet.
“Mei,” said Mk, clinging to her. 
“I know,” said Mei. “It's him.” 
“What are you two peasants talking about-” 
“You know,” said the puppet, drawing their attention, “really, it was rather impressive how you played right into her hands, bud.” It walked across the screen, but this time it continued off it, onto the wall. The laughter echoed. 
For a moment Red Son thought the shadow was talking to Mei, but then Mei was stepping in front of Mk and shielding him with her arm, flames flickering dangerously above her. 
“Mk had nothing to do with it,” Mei snapped. 
The puppet laughed again, tumbling through shadows and bouncing from one place to the other around the room. It bent in unnatural directions. “Nothing? Nothing? He caused this.” 
Red Son had to admit, he was curious. Curious as to how the man half-cowering behind Mei was responsible for… well, it was rather hard to understand what the puppet was referring to. 
“I didn’t,” said Mk, but he didn't sound very confident about it. 
“Do you think she would have gotten your precious friends if it weren’t for you? You think she would have gotten to your pathetic Sifu without your help?” 
“He’s not pathetic!” Mk shouted at it. “I don’t know what you’re talking about-” 
“All your second chances, all your do-good kindness lead to this. If it weren’t for you the Lady Bone Demon would have never gotten her hands on the rings.” 
“But,” said Mk, his voice small, “I didn’t do anything…” 
“And you think that’s a good thing?” The puppet laughed far too much in Red Son’s opinion. It lost its effectiveness after a while. At least on him. Mei and Mk just looked more and more unsettled and anxious. “You and your Master, so alike. Neither of you said anything to each other, did you?”
“What is he talking about?” Red Son asked, looking at Mk curiously. 
Mk shrunk back from his gaze. 
“It doesn’t matter,” Mei said. “Whatever happened doesn’t matter. So you better shut your mouth, Liú.” 
The puppet stood for a moment, frozen still. Then it’s head snapped off the wall to look at Mei. 
It became less of a shadow and more of a tangible thing. Its eyes were lifeless, its skin was more alive looking than a puppets should be. It had lace designs stretching across its skin in dark cracks across its skin. Its mouth stretched just as wide, but despite its upward tilting motion it didn’t look like it was smiling. It didn’t look completely like an object nor completely alive, some mix of both. Red Son could see both its eyes at once now, the slashed X over one of them looking like a gaping black hole. Its one eye was a pinprick amongst a pool, just as black, its pupil surrounded by a ring of purple. 
“You’re cursed,” Red Son realized. 
Its head snapped to look at him and Red Son felt frozen in place by it. The weight was nowhere near that of his fire contained in the rings above Mei’s head. But it was uncomfortable all the same. This thing in front of him was twisted and wrong and there was a lack of sanity in its one working eye that made it feel as though something would snap at any second. It looked as though it should be twitching but all it did was stay deathly still, not breathing but very clearly alive. 
“Not our problem,” Red Son forced out, despite the way the words tried to lodge in his throat with the things one eye on him. “Dragon Girl, we’re leaving.” 
“There’s no doors,” Mei muttered. 
Red Son whipped his head around to check. And she was right. He hadn’t realized it at first, but there were no doors, no windows, no holes or cracks in the wall to slip through. 
There was no way out. 
It was a claustrophobic feeling. But Red Son wasn’t about to let a sealed room intimidate him. 
“Very well then. Let us make one.” 
“I can’t let you leave,” said the puppet that Mei called Liú. “They’ll come soon.” 
“Elder Liú,” said Mk, “we can help you.” 
“I can’t let you leave,” it said again, its mouth moving with the words unlike its shadow had when it spoke before. It was a horrifying sight. Shadows moved behind them, creeping closer. “I can’t let you leave. I can’t let you leave. I can’t let you leave-” 
Red Son snorted. “You can’t stop us.” 
It just kept repeating it over and over again, ignoring him. The shadows stretched higher. They curled over top of them. Red Son watched them creep out of the wall, wrapping around the puppet, over its mouth and face and dragging it back into the wall. 
“Guys,” Mei said, glancing at her feet. “I think we’re in trouble here.”
“Then use my fire,” Red Son said through gritted teeth. 
“Oh yeah,” Mei said, “right.” She shook off the shadows that had started to cling to her foot and the rings blazed brighter above her. 
“Wait! Stop!” said Mk. 
“What?” Mei said. Then yelped, because a shadow lashed out and wrapped around her arm. 
One latched around Red Son’s leg and the shadows suddenly seemed a lot thicker and stronger than before. 
“They’re shadows,” Mk said. “The more light you give them the stronger they’ll be.” 
“How does that make sense?” 
“Just look, the more light there is, the more shadow can be seen. Unless we could get enough light to get rid of every shadow, more light would just be making it worse.” 
“Then what’s your suggestion,” Red Son snapped, clawing at the shadow that had attached itself to his wrist. 
“Less light,” Mk said. “They can’t touch us if there’s no shadows to shape in the dark. We need to break the lanterns.” 
“This is a terrible idea,” Red Son said. 
“Do you think I have enough control over these rings to light up a whole room?” Mei asked. 
Red Son did not think that. 
“That’s what I thought.” 
“Fine,” Red Son snapped. He snatched some fire away from Mei. The shadows had crept up to his hips now, wrapping and slowly sludging further up. He burnt some off his wrist so his hand was free. “Aim for the lanterns.” 
Mei missed twice. Red Son’s feeble second-hand fire couldn’t reach very far but the sparks landed and managed to light the lantern. 
“No,” the voice echoed, “what are you doing? Stop- stop I can’t exist without them-” 
“It's okay, Elder Liú,” Mk said, “we’ll get you out of here.” 
“Stop!”
“Ugh,” said Red Son, straining against the shadows that were now up to his shoulders. “You’re disgustingly reassuring, aren’t you.” 
“I try,” Mk said. He was trying to hide it but Red Son could hear the panic in his voice. 
The last lamp went out, burned to nothing, but light still remained. 
“Dragon Girl, the rings.” 
Mei cursed. 
“Mei-” Mk’s voice was cut off as the shadows wrapped around his mouth and started dragging him down. 
“Mk!” 
“THE RINGS!” Red Son yelled at her.
“I GOT IT,” Mei roared back. 
The shadows wrapped around Red Son’s mouth and started pulling. 
The rings flickered. 
“NO!” the puppet appeared in front of Mei’s face, reaching. 
All at once the light went out. 
Red Son fell flat on the floor, followed by two thumps. 
“HA!” said Mk. “I told you! How can you get grabbed by something when you’re already in it! It's like swimming!” 
“Water has currents that can grab you,” Red Son snapped at him. 
“Shadows aren’t tangible like water.” 
“You make less sense the more you talk.” 
“It worked, didn’t it?” Mk huffed. 
“Woo! Mk!” Mei cheered. “I’m gonna see that last bit in my nightmares! Haha! Where’d Old Liú go anyway?” 
“Um, I’m not sure,” Mk said. “Let me check.” 
There was a moment of shuffling and silence in the pitch black. Then Mk’s bright voice came. 
“Found him! He’s small now. Looks like a real shadow puppet.” 
“What? How can you see?” 
“Huh, I wonder if we could un-curse him like how we unpossessed Mk,” Mei said, ignoring Red Son’s question.  
“He feels like he’s made out of dry stuff,” Mk said. “I don’t know if it's safe to try.” 
“Just give him to me,” Red Son scoffed, blinding feeling around for Mk. “I’ll seal him in so he won’t jump back out the moment there’s shadows to jump from if you’re both so worried about it. You can figure out what to do with this thing later. We’re going to be pulled back any minute now.” 
Red Son heard a sound that took him a moment to place as Mk’s muffled laughter. 
“What? What are you laughing at?” 
“Nothing,” Mk said. “Here, hold still, I'll hand him to you.”
Red Son sighed and held out his hand impatiently. 
He could feel Mk standing in front of him, hesitating. 
“What now?” he groaned. 
“Just… be careful with him. Don’t hurt him okay?” Mk finally handed him over. 
“Whatever,” said Red Son, casting the spell to seal the puppet in its current form. “He’s none of my concern, living or dead.” 
Mk didn’t reply to that, but he could practically feel his worry.
“There,” Red Son said, shoving him back at him. “He won’t be any trouble for now.” 
“Great,” said Mei. “So do we need to talk about why Liú looks like a monkey? Or…?” 
The ground lit up underneath them. 
Mk yelped, his face illuminated and rushed to stuff the small shadow-puppet into his hanfu. 
The room lit up in flames.

i would care if you talked about luffy's issues please talk please tell me all your takes, genuinely (< anon who enjoys your takes)
I am so thankful you asked me this because Luffy is genuinely one of my favorite characters of all time, especially when it comes to shonen protagonists. I'm always saying I don't like shonens (says the one that watches a lot of shonens) but that's mainly because the main characters never feel... Well-written enough for me to like them. But, well, One Piece is different. With all characters, really. It's one of the first shonens I watch that I genuinely love and enjoy because of the characters (shout out to Mob Psycho 100 being one of my favorite animes of all time too because of that same reason).
Luffy is a very complex character and I think that's why he gets mischaracterized most of the time when it comes to the fandom. Some people make him too dumb. Others make him too childish. Others make him way darker and more depressed than he truly is. And I'd say that's weird, having in mind how much the show talks about Luffy and is focused on Luffy's POV, but I kind of understand because people aren't used to characters that are both optimistic and realistic at the same time. Most of the time people consider an optimistic character to be completely idealistic (a good example here is Uta. She is idealistic because she's been sheltered for so long and thinks something as complex as the corruption in the world can be solved with a few songs and love) and refuse to acknowledge the fact that somebody with hopes and dreams can also understand (first-hand, even) the suffering within the world. People like extremes. They like to make both Law and Zoro extremely edgy. They like to babify Sanji and Koby. They forget about Nami's character depth to make her only "the mean lesbian" of the group (that term makes me so fucking furious you don't even know). Etc. Etc. Etc. The thing is: Luffy has layers. His personality varies. He's optimistic. He's realistic. He's stupid. He's emotionally intelligent. He's impulsive. He cares about the safety of the people around him. He's careless. He feels guilt. He's confident. He's so damn insecure. He's playful. He's the most serious character too. Etc. Etc. Etc.
What I want to say with all of this is that Luffy, despite being always perceived as this childish, dumb, and careless character within the fandom, has so much depth and trauma he deals with every fucking day. I once saw somebody saying Luffy is "not smart enough to understand the feeling of sadness" and I started laughing because what the fuck does that even mean. And... Is that person watching the same thing as me? Because the guy has suffered the injustice of the world so many times and so many losses that I can't even count them.
Basically: People portray Luffy as if he hadn't gone through any type of trauma when OP has shown countless times that he has been through a lot. A fucking lot. Perhaps it's the fact that he's the one hiding it all the time in the show, always replacing sadness with the need to be stronger so he doesn't feel like that ever again (aka protecting everyone so he doesn't lose anybody again. And not even in a selfish way to not be alone, although we could say that he does feel like that to some extent. But because his loved ones do not deserve to disappear or die in those ways and he feels guilty whenever it happens because every time, he says it's because he wasn't strong enough to protect them) and that's why most people don't realize how much pain he has gone through. But that's not a very valid argument because we have a lot of arcs that prove it otherwise (Sabaody, Marineford, Film Red, Wano...). So, yeah, I guess people just don't know how to read.
Starting through chronological order, I want to talk about his abandonment issues and savior complex that always seem to go hand in hand.
Luffy doesn't like to be alone. He's a very empathetic and extroverted person. He doesn't like to be bored, always loving the company of somebody else. But, sadly, he has always been kind of alone? People come and go for him all the time, and you can't tell me that doesn't affect him psychologically. He's 7 when he meets Uta and Shanks and the kid has never been more excited! That's when his dream of being a pirate begins and it's the first time he has a friend. A real friend, not just random animals he manages to find or older people that sometimes take care of him. Luffy gets bored easily, so of course, Shanks and Uta, being something new, make his life brighter. With dreams and new experiences and hope for a newer, better life outside his village. And then Uta and Shanks have to go, of course, and he stays all alone again. From what we've seen, the only thing Luffy did when they weren't around was just... Waiting for them to come back to him. That's it. Luffy's joy basically comes from being with people, and especially when he's fixated on somebody in particular, he doesn't let them go. Then they come back... But Uta is not with them anymore. That's Luffy's first heartbreak, in my opinion. It's when he decides that he has to be stronger. He loved Uta so damn much. She meant the world to him. And suddenly she isn't there, giving him no time to say goodbye, and... He only has Shanks. But Shanks refuses to tell him the truth about what happened with her. So here you go! It's the first time Luffy loses somebody this dear to him and the first time Shanks betrays him enough for him to get angry at his hero. He ends up accepting it, of course, but not because he has moved on, but because both Uta and Shanks told him to be stronger. More mature. And he forces himself to grow up faster because he wants something. He wants to know where his friend is, and if Shanks refuses to tell him because he's just a kid, then he'll just have to grow up and become stronger. To become a pirate and to keep the promise he made with Uta. The movies aren't canon so I just keep thinking about Luffy wondering where Uta is, and it breaks my heart every time.
Then Ace and Sabo appear in his life and... They are literally everything to him. I like Garp. He did what he could do. Kind of. But he leaves Luffy on his own with Ace under the care of some bandits (Dadan we love you, queen). So he can't really blame Luffy for the way he turned out to be, honestly. The thing is: Ace and Sabo are, again, something new to Luffy. They are not just friends. They are his brothers, now. We don't talk enough about Luffy's maturity and respect for other people's dreams even when he's just a kid. Luffy literally was kidnapped and beaten up and he didn't dare to say a word about Ace and Sabo's treasure because he respected their dream. He's loyal and understands other people's feelings and hopes perfectly. His empathy and emotional intelligence are just perfect. Then, well, you all know the story, but these two become the most important thing in Luffy's life, not only because they are his brothers, but because they are the representation of their dreams and future. And then it crashes into a million fucking pieces because of Celestial Dragons and classism and rich people quite literally saying "We are burning down the poor because they don't deserve to live! Woohoo!". And it's Luffy's first time realizing that the world is unfair and fucked up and that there are people that believe to be superior to others, a thing that Luffy fights against all the time.
So, Luffy learns that the world is extremely fucked up at a very young age. He has first-hand contact with the abuse rich people inflict on others, in every way. He suffers from the torture that is fighting for your life in the world of pirating and thieves when he's not even a pirate yet. He's just a kid. What the fuck. And then he loses Sabo. His older brother literally is killed by a celestial dragon and he can't do anything about it. He can only cry, of course, he's just a kid. What is he going to do? So he decides to become stronger. Because he feels weak in the hands of what is the injustice of the world. He feels trapped by that injustice, in my opinion, and wanting to be stronger is just the path to freedom. Because freedom means being able to save the people he cares about.
And here's the thing: Luffy's need to become stronger always comes from the guilt he feels after losing somebody, blaming himself even though he literally could have done nothing at the time to save Uta or Sabo. He has a severe savior complex, not to feel better about himself (although you could say that it would certainly fix his fear of being weak) but to not lose anybody else. For some reason he always feels responsible for the faith of the people he loves, he's constantly putting others first and sacrificing himself and then feeling guilty and weak when he can't save them when it wasn't even in his hands to save them in the first place.
Kid Luffy goes through a ton of stuff in his early years and the fear of being alone... Of losing somebody he cares about... It haunts him. He sees Shanks and piracy as the meaning of freedom and strength. It's just that simple for him: If he becomes a pirate, he'll be strong. If he's strong, he'll be free. If he's free, he'll never lose anybody again.
And yet, even if he's confident he'll manage to do this... He's still a kid. He's still a little brother. Ace's little brother. He depends on Ace, too, because that's the one person he has left. Ace promises him he won't die because he's just as confident, and says this as if Luffy was stupid for thinking something could happen to him. Not to get too into Ace's character right now, but the fact that he's constantly wondering if he should be alive to then realize Luffy needs him to stay alive... Is so damn beautiful.
And then he literally dies in front of Luffy. Protecting Luffy. And Oh, boy if that doesn't kill him... But that comes after Sabaody! After losing literally all of his crew! God, stop hurting this guy already for fuck's sake-
Long story short, Luffy manages to get a family. Not a crew. A family. He's not alone anymore, and he proves constantly that he won't let any of them go or die on him the way it happened with Uta and Sabo.
Water 7 is... Rough for Luffy, to say the least. Because it's the first time he sees everything he has built crumbling down. Robin is taken by the Marines. Usopp wants to leave the crew because he doesn't feel like he fits in, even though Luffy knows he is perfect for the family (Usopp just can't believe him because, you know, insecurities suck). And he has to learn how to be a captain. A true captain. He has to make the harsh decision of fighting his best friend and letting him go (his worst fucking fear) at the age of 17 because he's the captain. He has to be mature. And strong. And he definitely doesn't feel like those now. Not when Robin is also on her way to be executed.
Usopp is leaving. Robin might die. And it's just like Uta and Sabo all over again.
So, basically, Luffy grows up too fast. He grows up too fast, with the fear of abandonment and being weak, and the weight of being the captain of a whole crew resting on his shoulders. Besides, he fights against the world government for Robin because he refuses to let her die thinking she doesn't deserve/want to live, and it reminds me a lot of Ace's story. Ace doesn't think he deserves to live but then stays because he realizes that Luffy loves him and needs him. Robin, thanks to Luffy, realizes that she wants to live and that she has a new family to fight for.
Nobody dies and Usopp comes back this time, so everything ends up turning out fine after all! Yay!
Then Sabaody happens and I swear my guy can't have a fucking break.
Who has suffered more, Jesus Christ or Monkey D. Luffy from Sabaody to Marineford? I think we already know the answer.
He loses all of his crew. All at once. His worst fucking fear. They vanish right in front of his eyes and he can't do anything. He feels weak. He's shattered. Completely broken. But he's optimistic, still, because he believes in his crew and he knows they'll find a way to be together again! They've ben through a lot together, and they can find each other in a few days in Sabaody again. It's fine. But he has to delay it, of course, because his other biggest fucking fear is happening right now: Ace might die. His older brother might die.
So if you mix the trauma that caused him to have abandonment issues and a savior complex with the fact that Ace is the only sibling he has left and he is completely alone because his crew isn't by his side anymore... You get the most heartbreaking arc of the show! Awesome.
He does everything he can to save Ace. Ace complains about it, begging him to stay away from danger. And he refuses because he's his brother. He has to fight for him. And he does. And Ace dies anyway. Ace dies protecting him, too, and the hope that was left within him dies completely at that moment. Everything is shattered. His whole world is crumbling down. And I think that Luffy dies too at that moment.
For Luffy, losing Ace is not like losing a limb. Losing Ace is losing his everything. Ace meant the world to him. He was the representation of their dreams and hopes and past and future. He was the only person who knew Sabo like the back of his hand, too. And now Luffy is the only one carrying their souls. All alone.
That's probably Luffy's rock bottom. He doesn't think he deserves to be a pirate (or alive, either, but I don't want to get too deep into his suicidal thoughts I definitely think are a real thing because then this becomes too dark. But yeah. I think he does think about that too). He doesn't think he's strong enough. And he's completely broken.
There's this line from Fleabag that I absolutely adore: "I don't know what to do with it." / "With what?" / "With all the love I have for her. I don't know where to put it now."
Because Ace is gone. He's completely gone. And all the love Luffy has for him turns into grief and he doesn't know what to do anymore if Ace's soul isn't in the world to look after him. He doesn't know what to do if all the love and feelings he has for his brother go to waste. And it's his fault. Because he wasn't strong enough to protect him. Because he wasn't able to protect himself, Ace having to sacrifice himself for him. (And we know he feels guilty about this because he tells Sabo the second they meet again. He apologizes for not protecting Ace. He feels guilty about what happened still. And Sabo is just glad Luffy is okay because he knows his brothers too well to know already what happened).
Then our beloved Jinbe comes along (I love you. Please adopt me) and, following that quote of Fleabag: "I'll take it. No, I'm serious. It sounds lovely. I'll have it. You have to give it to me." / "Okay." / "It's got to go somewhere."
Jinbe reminds Luffy that he still has his crew. That he still has people who need him alive. People that love him and care for him. That he can't be weak if he has helped so many people already. That they're willing to take both the love and pain Ace makes him feel. And it's such a great character development for Luffy... It makes me go insane. He remembers his crew one by one and realizes that he's not alone anymore. That he has to be stronger for them and for Ace. And for Uta. And Sabo. Jinbe is there with him when the others couldn't, and it has nothing to do with Luffy's issues but I just want to mention how much I love Jinbe for this.
But he still feels the need to be stronger and the fear of losing his crew and the people he loves still haunts him. He tells the straw hats to meet after 2 years (that's a long fucking time. Like. Longer than the time they've spent together. Imagine the loyalty, damn). And it's... It's so beautifully written. The 3D2Y scene is one of my favorites because it shows the loyalty and love they have for each other, and how Luffy is willing to become stronger for the people he loves and the ones he has lost along the way. I literally have the tattoo. I am obsessed with the whole concept.
As I said, Luffy's abandonment issues and the fact that he wants to become stronger to never lose anybody again (Savior complex much?) still remain even after his character development. Because that's not something you get rid of. That's just how he is. And I think that, as long as he is with the straw hats, it won't be a problem.
Also I wanted to mention his reunion with Sabo! The guilt he feels for losing Ace? The way he clings onto his older brother as if they were going to take Sabo away from him? They're extremely codependent and I am here for it, honestly. Sabo would die for Luffy and Luffy would kill him if he did that. Also, I don't know where the fuck Sabo is now because I'm only watching Wano but I swear to God if something happens to him I will murder somebody with my bare hands. :)
Oh! And then it comes my favorite arc of all the show: Whole Cake Island (to the surprise of literally no one!). Luffy, in the beginning, is extremely optimistic when it comes to rescuing Sanji. He's simple like that. "If he doesn't want to get married, we rescue him. If he wants to get married, he just brings his wife with us!". And if Sanji didn't want to come back to them (truly not wanting to) he would accept it. But Sanji wants to. Luffy knows Sanji wants to go back to the Sunny with them. He knows Sanji isn't being true to himself. And God, he's desperate. Because Sanji is stubborn and his self-sacrificing and deprecating thoughts are even stronger than Luffy's, and he won't give up until Luffy lets him go. But Luffy doesn't want to fight him, he just wants his cook back. Because he knows that, no matter how much harm he does to him, Sanji is only doing it to himself (one of my favorite quotes from OP). So, Luffy goes again through the desperation of not losing a crewmate, but losing one of his wings. Without Sanji, Luffy can't become the king of the pirates. He's willing to die from starvation for him. Are you- Are you all aware that he almost fucking dies from starvation? I don't think we talk about that enough because what the actual fuck. There's this thing they tell Luffy (I don't remember exactly when or the exact phrasing) about him wanting Sanji back out of selfishness and not because of Sanji's well-being and... I partially agree? Don't get me wrong, Luffy does everything here for Sanji because he knows Sanji is suffering and lying to himself. But Luffy is selfish, too. Luffy doesn't want Sanji to go away because he loves him. That's his cook. He doesn't want to lose anybody else, even less knowing that they're going to be unhappy. That's kind of for me the confirmation of Luffy's abandonment issues. Like- He does everything for his crew, of course, but he's so scared of losing them. Then Sanji comes back to them, of course, and they have their own Pride and Prejudice moment. Not even Jane Austen can write shit like this.
I kind of want to talk about Wano but I haven't finished it yet (I'm like, on episode 1056) but I would like to mention how beautiful it is for Luffy to carry Ace's soul and promises like that. And also the responsibility he carries during the whole arc to save Wano? That's so- It's so fucked up. He's such a good leader and captain and everything I said in this post and all the things he does in Wano show that he will become the king of the pirates. I love him so damn much. I can't even write it down properly.
Anyway, summarizing everything: Luffy has a lot of abandonment issues and a savior complex that becomes unhealthy to the point of sacrificing himself and always carrying the burdens of everyone else. Because he fears he might lose his loved ones if he isn't strong enough. So. You know. It would be great if people stopped saying he's just childish and fun and that he doesn't have any character depth because he's probably the most complex shonen protagonist I've ever seen! He has suffered so damn much it hurts! Live Laugh Love Luffy! <3

with less than 24 HOURS until protocol, here are my final hopes/predictions/general ramblings
First off, jmart. Jmart my beloveds. My babygirls. I need them ALIVE AND WELL AND HAPPY, but you know I’ll take what I can get. Ideally it’s our jmart not an alternate universe jmart, but again. ILL TAKE WHAT I CAN GET. And if there’s no jmart, I’ll be sad but I’m sure I’ll get over it as I get unreasonably attached to new characters (that’s a lie. I listened to the finale like 9 months ago and I’m still not over it. I understand that having them in protocol would kinda undermine the whole ambiguous ending they had going on, but you know. I need them to be ok. Also, if they’re not in protocol I’m very curious who’s voice was in the announcement audio thing if it wasn’t martins)
Secondly, Agnes montague. Agnes my love. My darling. If you have seen my previous post with my “how Agnes montague can still win” theory you know where this is going, but anyways the theory is that protocol will be desolation focused and will have Agnes in it. I go more into detail in the post. (Also, this wasn’t in the original post, but I noticed that there’s embers in the promotional material, so more fuel for my ridiculous fire baby)
Next, I would like Gwendolyn Bouchard to bpm (brutal pipe murder) someone. I’m sorry, I don’t even know her, but I need it. It would be funny
Finally, a happy ending. I know this is completely unrealistic, and almost definitely won’t happen, but that’s not going to stop me from hoping. (Jonny and Alex if you’re reading this, shut up stop laughing I know they all probably die or something, just let me HOPE)

In almost every scenario of Yukakoi I kinda just. Mentally replace Cinderella with this even though it technically ends on a more platonic note but still djrbvjbvs
basically, aside from Aya and Cinderella The Stand (which I've made some minor changes to) I've almost completely scrapped the whole episode and rewritten it in a way that I think fits way better. This is my Cinderella Rewrite :D
So it's been a few days/weeks since everything went down, and Yukako's been doing a lot of self reflection. She's been thinking, questioning, really just trying to figure things out. Admittedly it's a bit hard because she doesn't really have any friends to bounce her thoughts off of, but She's Trying Her Best
then she meets Aya. Hears her promises of love and how with her Stand, she can make it happen easily
and Yukako does accept the changes, albeit hesitantly. Cinderella changes her body, and for those precious 30 minutes, Yukako gets to experience Koichi loving her
......only she doesn't feel the happiness she thought, she hoped, she would. Doesn't feel the euphoria of love and care being given back to her and reciprocated
instead, it makes her sick to her stomach
because this isn't real. The glimmer in Koichi's eyes, the flush of his cheeks, the stutter of his words, none of it is real. There's a sense of wrongness to it, and deep down she can't help but feel like he isn't acting like Koichi would. His eyes, normally so sharp and clear, have a hazed over look like he isn't actually seeing her, and his smile is sweet but blank. It's not genuine and it makes her sick that such a terrifying expression could ever be on his face
this isn't love. This is a trick, an illusion, a false reality
when the effects of Cinderella wear off and Koichi looks at her the same way he did before, when he looks like himself again, she can't help but feel relieved. While his wariness hurts, it's far preferred to the sickly sweet smiles and dazed eyes
and this is when everything finally clicks for Yukako. It comes crashing down all at once and she begins to slowly, properly understand what she did. And with this realization comes a sort of acceptance. She draws connections between the reaches she was willing to go and Cinderella literally manipulating reality to make these things happen, and starts to see that it..... really wasn't healthy
For the first time, she finally puts Koichi's feelings before her own and stops pursuing him
........but as I said before, I said this episode was being rewritten. Not completely averted. And with Yukako chilling out..... who will be the antagonist?
Well :)
remember way back before Yukako kidnapped Koichi and was being unhealthily possessive she set that one random girl's hair on fire?
Yeah. Yeah her
She was pretty upset after everything that happened and ends up concocting a plan for revenge
I kinda want to play with her and Yukako and their reactions, but specifically in how similar I can make them, specifically in a "your feelings by themselves are fine and valid but the things you are doing to satisfy them are not" way
It wasn't hard for the girl to put together the pieces and realize Yukako had been the one to set her hair on fire, and understandably she was really pissed about it and went about planning some kind of way to get back at her
more or less, it boiled down to Get Hirose Have A Crush On Me And Lead Him On To Crush Yukako's Heart
now, there are three important things about this girl:
1) she had no idea about 95% of the stuff Yukako had done. Her knowledge was pretty much limited to Yukako Likes Hirose, Yukako Didn't Like I Was Talking Shit About Hirose, and Hirose Doesn't Reciprocate Yukako's Feelings. If she'd known just how far Yukako had been willing to go and what exactly she'd done to make Koichi so wary of her, she would've hard noped out of the situation
2) She is Just A Normal Person. She has no idea about any of the magic or Stand things going on. Because of this, she also assumes that Yukako lighting her hair on fire had been a preplanned thing instead of an impulsive decision
3) She Is A First Year In Highschool and first years are petty assholes who can be kinda dumb sometimes when trying to be petty assholes
so yeah, that's going on now. Maybe in between Yukako's first episode and "this episode" there could've been moments where the girl made slight background appearances and stuff as a sort of build up
Unfortunately (for her at least), Koichi doesn't have much interest in her and mostly brushes it off. Plus...... he's admittedly a bit on guard after everything that happened with Yukako, and so are his friends. This is then how Aya and Cinderella tie into things again. Fast forward a few more weeks to when the episode actually happens, and this girl pays Aya a visit. Now, she had no idea Aya was actually magic, but she didn't really question it because it got her the results she wanted. And Yukako..... actually does notice Koichi's "affections" for this other girl, and while it does hurt she stays firm with herself and stays away. She should be happy for him after all
.......but then she keeps noticing things. It wasn't on purpose, but given their proximity in school they're bound to pass by each other every once in a while, and what she sees.... she doesn't like. Koichi's behavior is...... off and weird and familiar for some reason, and the way his affections are received is even worse. This other girl brushes him off, disrespects him, her attitude almost seems mocking at times, but Koichi seems either completely oblivious to it or entirely uncaring
Yukako is then given a bit of a crisis. How this girl is treating Koichi feels so wrong, but she genuinely isn't able to tell if these feelings are lingering jealousy or Hey Something Is Actually Wrong Here, and she really doesn't want to risk it being the latter because that will just hurt Koichi even more. Following Koichi around to gather evidence is exactly what she's trying to avoid doing, but she also doesn't know any other way
so after a lot of mulling and debating and trying to figure out what the hell is happening, she ends up going to Josuke and Okuyasu
and while at first they're on edge and suspicious...... they can't deny they've noticed what she has as well. Have noticed it for a while, but they haven't been able to do much. They think Koichi's acting weird, but the girl isn't a Stand User (they've tested it a few times already) and they're really not sure how to go about this. They don't trust her, not by a long shot and they're honestly not completely sure she isn't going to stab them in the back when it's over, but they're willing to work with her on this for Koichi's sake
Yukako's honestly fine with their suspicion, she's just happy she wasn't making things up like she feared
so they set up a trap of sorts. Yukako's going to confront the girl (without violence, just verbally) alone about this under the guise she's still in love with him while Josuke and Okuyasu hide nearby to eavesdrop
So they do! And this was exactly what the girl was waiting for. She tears into Yukako, insulting her, pointing out how Koichi was nervous around her, maybe bringing in her home life (which I headcanon to be Nonexistent At Best), and really just pointing out every single one of Yukako's insecurities and throwing it in her face. Josuke and Okuyasu feel...... really awkward for that part of the conversation, but then Yukako finally manages to steer it to the whole reason why they were here
Yukako points out how the girl clearly didn't love Koichi, hell she didn't even seem to like him, so why was she keeping him around?
And the girl just flat out admits to what she's doing. How she couldn't care less about Koichi, how seeing him trip over himself to try and get her to like him is hilarious, how the whole reason she's doing this is to hurt Yukako, and how despite the fact she's said everything she wouldn't be able to do a thing about it because Koichi's wrapped around her finger and no one would ever believe her :)
so she leaves Yukako slightly shell shocked in the middle of the room with a VERY murderous Josuke and Okuyasu, all still reeling at what this girl just said
so now they're a bit stuck. None of them had the foresight to record the conversation because they didn't think she'd spill everything like that, and if Josuke and Okuyasu hadn't been able to convince Koichi before, Yukako joining the mix wasn't going to make it much better. The two boys were honestly surprised there weren't any Stand Shenanigans going on. They knew she wasn't a User, but it was still wild that this was all happening naturally
.......and it's with that comment things finally click with Yukako. She recalls the Stand User beautician she had visited all those weeks ago, how Koichi's behavior is almost exactly like what it had been during that half hour, how this girl would've had access to Aya's services, and everything falls into place
the three of them BOOK IT over to Aya's and prepare for a fight...... only they don't get one. Aya's naturally really confused about what's happening and asks, but when she learns the situation?
oh yeah, she's P I S S E D
after all, Aya does genuinely want people to find love. She wants to be their fairy godmother making their wishes for love come true, wants to give them a happy ending as long as they're willing to put the time and effort into making it happen. So learning this girl was using it for revenge? That she was toying with Koichi's feelings to get back at someone else? Yeah she's ready to go fucking ballistic
she cancels Cinderella's ability on the girl immediately and they all run back to the school to see if it worked, and it did :D....... but both parties noticed immediately and are now having a rather loud argument because Koichi's understandably freaking the fuck out because his mind was being messed with and the girl is pissed that Koichi's finally realized what's going on. For a second things looked like they might escalate even further, but the gang steps in, call her out on her bullshit (maybe the girl tries pinning some of it on Yukako but they shut that down quick), and take Koichi home. Aya explains to Koichi about her Stand and profusely apologizes for her unknowing role in all this, and tells the kids they're welcome any time
and they finally just. Have a moment of calm to take a breather. They all start walking home with the three explaining everything Aya didn't to Koichi and making plans for the next day to make sure the girl didn't try anything else
and..... I'll admit, I'm not too sure how, but eventually, Koichi and Yukako are going to be left alone, and the following dialog is said:
“W-wait…… look, I won’t lie…. what you did before wasn’t okay. You hurt me, and I was scared. But….. but you have changed. You’ve grown, and you listened to what I told you. You saved me because it was the right thing, not because you wanted me to give you anything or because you wanted anything and….. thank you.
I…. Before, at the cafe when you confessed to me….. I don’t hate you, and I don’t think you’re ugly. Actually, I think you’re very beautiful. You just…. caught me off guard. The last thing I was expecting was a love confession. I didn’t know how to respond, and suddenly you were yelling and I-"
*a deep breath and a moment of silence*
"....I don’t know if I’ll ever love you like that, and I'm sorry. But.... maybe we could try to be friends?"
and after everything that had happened throughout the last few weeks. After learning more about herself. After learning about how..... nice it could be to have friends who you could trust to look out for you
Yukako accepts with a few tears and a soft, happy smile
(also, if in retaliation for using her Stand in such a way Aya ended up rearranging the girl's face into something much less attractive..... well, no one needs to know it was her :))

14. How long does it usually take you to make a set

for real, while technically i can make a gifset within a day or a few, i have a nasty tendency to procrastinate everything, literally everything, even stuff i actually enjoy. and when i do get around to actually making sth i overthink it. sometimes for months. yup. lbr overthinking (alongside chronic lack of spoons) is the main reason i create stuff so rarely and post it even rarer even if i have it finished for a while. i'm trying to improve, okay..? just gonna kick myself more often into calling things finished and posting them, i literally have dozens of gifset ideas waiting to be executed, several art wips (as well as finished pieces), two videoedit ideas, and quite a few k words of both fic and meta… the tricky part is just to get around to all of it
16. How long have you been making gifs
oof lemme see… in June 2020 i made my first gifs that weren't completely horrible cuz before that i was using merely a phone app for this with video editing software (this and this were made this way). and then in February 2021 i finally figured out what was missing from my PS and preventing me from editing gifs there and fixed it. so yeah, i've been relatively new to this, i guess..? though ngl the experience of very spontaneously making two videoedits before trying out proper gifing was a nice starting point
34. A set that took you a long time/was really hard but you’re really proud of how it came out
hm the stardust one is the first that came to mind even though it's more the case of "it didn't receive as much attention as most my other cql gifsets but i'm still quite fond of it" rather than it being particularly time/effort-consuming. not to mention that i'm hardly ever actually proud of anything i create but well, that's just my brain cockroaches messing stuff up. back on track, the WWX gifs in the trust parallel set were a pain to edit but eventually i ended up learning new tricks while groping my way around it so i'm not complaining
okay, if i were really to pick a gifset i'm proud of that'd be the ripples one, no doubts (gonna add the link once i actually finish and post it, i promise). it's the most advanced technically (don't even ask me how long i've been nitpicking it from all directions and how i'm still tempted to drop the current version in favor of approaching it from a whole new direction bc surely it can be done way way better if i just go nitpick it some more! ya know, the usual overthinking) and it's sth very personal to me thematically. the underlying meaning of it is too closely related to liminal spaces (or more like what i simplify as "liminal spaces" as i suspect my own understanding of this concept in general can differ quite a bit from that of other people) so putting it into actual words gets tricky. but this kinda comes with the territory so nothing unusual
48. How would you describe your giffing style
ugh honestly idek if i have one..? for real, i don't think there's anything about my gifs that makes them stand out much. at least there surely isn't anything that i deliberately make sure to integrate every single time (maybe i do unconsciously though, who knows). so i feel like it's more for others to judge ¯_(ツ)_/¯
what i can say is that when i do make gifsets i apparently tend to illustrate some narrative parallels or sth with them..? or just combine scenes with a quote that strikes me with fitting vibes. or both. also i like to have fun with the colors and lighting and use adjustment layers quite heavily (but gotta admit it's hardly an option to halfass this if i wanna my Yi City gifs to look vibrant and alive enough). i suppose alternative subtitles to all my cql sets are a feature of my so called style as well since i always translate them myself instead of going the easy way and copying any of the already existing ones. which is also fun! even if, well, adds to the amount of time and spoons i put into it but what can i say, it's a matter of habit by now

I’m not digging having folks either attempt to tag police me on how I reblog random shit or having *their* yelling into the void stamped onto my retinas.

I’m talking. To myself. Because when I melted into the puddle of goo that cannot leave, tags were silent, unless you actively went digging. Like. Maybe I’m the grumpy one here, but I miss that.
Unless I am an idiot and there is a way to turn off visible tags, in which case: I am a whole ass idiot.
