I always liked Nicholas Sayre from Lirael/The Old Kingdom series.
To be fair, I like everyone from that series though.
I always imagine Nick sporting physical signs of his exhaustion and semi-possession by the Necromancer (bags under the eyes, muddied, 100% done).

on one hand i don’t think you can blame nick for any of the destroyer stuff in a way that would hold up in court (and I think he probably punishes himself about it enough already.) but. on the other hand. if biden’s nephew became friends with prince george, fucked off to england, killed(?) a bunch of his employees and vulnerable refugees, conducted what looked like bomb testing on american soil, and then everyone was like “it’s fine because He Was Possessed” you know i would start killing

Character asks: Lirael!
1: sexuality headcanon
Aspec. I think she definitely doesn't interrogate her sexuality at all and is pretty ace and at least a little arospec. She knows she's supposed to be interested in that, but she mostly doesn't have the time, patience, or interest for it. She's not opposed necessarily, but she doesn't have an active interest in it.
2: otp
Nicholas Sayre. I've said this before, but I think they would love researching magic together. Nick would teach her the scientific method, and she would show him her fuck around and find out method of research. They would fumble a bit around navigating relationship expectations and Nick wouldn't know how to deal with Lireal's asexuality, but by the end of their time in the books, I'm pretty sure they know they need to communicate better, and I have faith they'd figure it out (also, they'd have very weirdly powerful kids who would almost certainly become Abhorsens, although at least one of them is gonna want to just hole up in the Library of the Clayr for their entire life).
3: brotp
The obvious choice is the Dog, but I think she and Ellimere would become best friends pretty quickly. They're very different, but Ellimere reminds Lireal that there can be joy around responsibility (while they still both are overachievers going above and beyond to live up to a lot of intense expectations).
4: notp
Sam? I mean, there's the obvious bit about how she's his aunt, but they don't know that at first, so we do get Sam looking at her that way briefly. But they are friends. Also, even though they've bonded through the shared trauma of saving the universe, they still frequently just don't understand each other. And also end up not talking to each other for months at a time while Sam is locked up in his workshop and she's off fighting the Dead. But yeah, that's a big no for me.
5: first headcanon that pops into my head
I mean, the aspec stuff. But outside of that, it's that Lireal hides out at the kennels at the Palace when she's there and doesn't want anyone to find her. The Palace library is fine, but she misses the Dog and the dogs in the kennels love her.
6: one way in which I relate to this character
I too am a nerdy gifted kid who weirded people out and read ahead in the books at school. I related to her so hard about that when I first read the book. Also the depression a bit. Related a lot in high school.
7: thing that gives me second hand embarrassment about this character
The weepiness sometimes. I've never been much of a crier, so that was always just uncomfortable for me to read.
8: cinnamon roll or problematic fave?
Cinnamon roll.

My Top 3 Worst Choices LIs (this list is subject to later change or expansion)
🏅Honorable Mentions:
Nick from HFTH: He got on my nerves for the first part of the book, but at least he became more tolerable later.
Everett/Yvette from SB: Copy-paste emotionally closed off LI with copy-paste backstory of being betrayed by a shitty ex. But I didn't completely hate them or find them terrible.
Julian/Julia from SB: I liked them but they clearly just existed to be a "backup" for just in case we don't like Everett/Yvette. You could have removed them from the story and nothing would change.
Will from TCATF: I liked him as a character, but him being into Dom was completely out of nowhere and they clearly only added it in to have a token mlm romance in the trilogy.
Rory from HSS:CA: I liked them well enough, but they felt very lackluster as a character compared to Ajay and Skye, and to OG HSS's LIs. The other LIs in these trilogies all have some form of personal growth arc, but Rory just seemed to fall short of that. There was also really no need for the entirety of Book 1's conflict to revolve around MC's forced crush on Rory.
Logan from ROD: Of all the LIs they could have made the "main LI", why him? Why not Colt? Cause I remember a hell of a lot more about Colt's relevance to the Mercy Park Crew than I do that of Logan's. But to be fair it has been a long time since I last played.
🥉Third Place:
Reagan from Surrender.
Reagan acting predatory to MC, texting her a photo of a riding crop and "Have you been a good girl or do I need to punish you" within 10 minutes after first meeting her sours the story and the character.
That plus the fact that MC suddenly wanting to be a sub is completely out of nowhere (and also hypocritical on behalf of the writers who claim it wouldn't make sense for MC to want to dom right away), making a scene that can be read as Reagan coercing MC into BDSM and being a sub. Which just goes against the whole point of MC's story revolving around escaping a toxic spouse.
🥈Second Place:
Kit from Untameable.
I'm in the unpopular opinion in that I don't find most customizable LIs to be completely devoid of personality. But Kit is the literal textbook definition of "personality devoid customizable LI". The childhood backstory for MC, Kit, and Austin is incredibly weak and I have no idea why MC would be so into Kit.
And the story does a terrible job of trying to convince me that Kit is a player too. There are like two scenes ever where Kit gets swarmed by gals/guys but from what I can tell, Kit doesn't really care much about hooking up with any of them. People call the story wlm-coded but honestly the "high stakes" and "forbidden romance" is just so forced, it doesn't even matter how gender-coded the story is cause it will be nonsensical even if you play as wlm.
🥇First Place:
Bastien from Wolf Bride.
It's not so much for possessiveness and kidnapper behavior and him being all "herp derp MC and I are magically bonded we must do breeding". I mean, don't get me wrong, I fucking hate seeing these kinds of LIs pushed on us so much, but it's kinda what I expected from this kind of book (I mean, look at that cover). So I could just give it an eyeroll and a "Ugh this is such a cliche Twilight/romance YA novel trope", and not dwell on it so much.
But what really made me hate him was accusing Morgan of betraying the pack to help Sayre, despite being witness to Morgan calling out Sayre's abuse of her. And they try to excuse it with "Oh this is just how wolves get when they're both fighting over the same mate" ok sure, Bastien's still an asshole tho. And sure Morgan did shitty stuff too but at least it was addressed and she got a redemption/atonement.

The painting above is 3 Oracles, 2022, by Sayre Gomez, on view at Columbus Museum of Art. It is part of the exhibition New Encounters: Reframing the Contemporary Collection of the Columbus Museum of Art .
From the museum about the work-
Based in Los Angeles, Sayre Gomez often employs techniques borrowed from Hollywood set painting and commercial advertising to heighten the sense of lifelikeness in his paintings. In 3 Oracles, Gomez’s depiction of a vacant big-box store renders the shifting forces of the consumer economy in exacting, photo-realistic detail. The three appliance brands represented on the store’s façade, DieHard, Craftsman, and Kenmore, were all formerly owned by Sears Corporation, a retail giant that filed for bankruptcy in 2018.
Gomez recently co-curated the Feed the Streets Benefit Show at Sebastian Gladstone in Los Angeles. The opening is tomorrow evening (7/13) from 6-9pm and the exhibition will be on view until 8/3/24.
The group exhibition includes work by- Alfonso Gonzalez Jr. , Andrew Park, Bennet Schlesinger, Bryan Ruiz, Calvin Marcus, Chad Murray, Eddie Martinez, Emma McMillan, Evan Holloway, Greg Ito, G.V. Rodriguez, Jaime Muñoz, Jake Longstreth, Jonas Wood, Josh Smith, JPW3, Julia Yerger, Juliana Halpert, Justin Caguiat, Kalan Strauss, Mario Ayala, Max Hooper Schneider, Mungo Thomson, Nick Angelo, Nick Clark, Nihura Montiel, Richard Tinkler, Ryan Preciado, Sam Moyer, Sayre Gomez, Sterling Ruby, timo fahler, and Tristan Unrau.
All proceeds benefit Feed the Streets and their ongoing mission of colecting donated food, hygiene products, clothing, and educational items for hand to hand distribution in Los Angeles and New York. Feed the Streets also provides athletic and creative resources for underserved youth.

Next comes Alastor Dorrance, head of Seccion Trese, collector of Old Kingdom relics, and might have something to do with disappearing visitors to his hacienda… A towering, jolly figure on the outside, calculating single-minded servant of the Hrule on the inside. I tried to strike a balance between a Mexican statesman and also maybe a more white-colonial appropriator of cultural antiquities and traditions, especially with the way he wears antique accessories and the patterns on his sweater mimic those in Old Kingdom designs (those are on their way). Still lots of work ahead!

@necromycologist #< godd i want. samb craft time but what if there was. Symbolism in it?
every day I wake up dot gif 😭😭😭 THERE'S SO MUCH HERE....
thinking of something symbolic/thematic for each bell is An Exercise and the deepest/most difficult trial would most probably be forging Astarael but. he's also got some interesting personal trauma around Saraneth, right!!!!? (and if you're in tune with the Thinker you're sort of naturally at odds with the Binder?) I'D LOVE UR THOUGHTS on each bell as an actual trial for Sam
but I'm also just imagining Mosrael induced insomnia. sudden and inconvenient sleeping beauty Ranna nap. Dyrim making sam confess Things (even worse than when he usually rambles, to his horror). He's Belgaer's favorite idiot (to ME) and that one can rearrange your memories/perception of reality. the potential

🍄 ⇢ share a head canon for one of your favourite ships or pairings🍬 ⇢ post an unpopular opinion about a popular fandom character 🔪 ⇢ what's the weirdest topic you researched for a writing project?
I'm sorry, I managed to miss this one. Please forgive my late response.
🍄 ⇢ share a head canon for one of your favourite ships or pairings
I think I've already told you this, but I've been thinking about it a lot recently: aspec Lirael with Nick. He is, according to some earlier bits of the Sam POV bits in the book and some allusions in The Creature in the Case, probably a bit of a rake. But also maybe a bit of a romantic. Lirael is pretty aroace but a little bit demiromantic and not sex averse. She has strong feelings about Nicholas Sayre, but their relationship is mostly nerd4nerd and digging through the books at the House and in the Great Library of the Clayr. They are fascinated with each other and bonded by trauma and historically significant events more than they're in love with each other. They have kids (because bloodlines), and those kids are hella powerful Charter Mages and Free Magic sorcerers. That generation does more true experimentation with the Charter and Free Magic than has been done in centuries (Lirael and Nick and Sam obviously explore it, but both they and Sabriel/Touchstone were experimenting out of necessity and still had to spend most of their time fixing things as opposed to finding new things). Uh, so, that's a lot of headcanon for you.
🍬 ⇢ post an unpopular opinion about a popular fandom character
I definitely live in a fandom bubble and have no idea what is popular or unpopular in most of the things I fan about. But, in Person of Interest, Lionel Fusco & John Reese is a much more compelling relationship (platonic) than any iteration of Harold/John or Harold & John. Harold and John are the main characters, yeah, but their relationship builds in a pretty standard kind of arc and they're just both guys with mysterious, "anonymous" backgrounds doing extralegal vigilante shit. Fusco is a dirty cop turned good guy who has an exciting arc! And he has the best nick names for John! And he has fantastic rapport with all of the other team members. The fandom is sleeping on them.
🔪 ⇢ what's the weirdest topic you researched for a writing project?
I answered this earlier with a thing about Chicago train schedules in the 1950s, but I've looked up some pretty random stuff. I'm going to go with wedding venues in Austin, TX (a city I have never been to)that have been around for more than 30 years (for my hangster 27 Dresses AU) and also were close enough to a park one might casually walk through. That was a really weird one to try to figure out, and apparently my cookie/tracking blocking extensions in Firefox work because I managed to escape being bombarded with wedding-based targeted ads.
