Hey, can you tell me more about how Lestat's turning was? The show gave us glimpses of it with 1x06 and 2x08, but I haven't gotten there yet and I'm curious. I know it was one of the most traumatic ones, if not he very worst. You don't need to tell me everything. because I'm assuming that must be long. but I'm okay with lengthy answers and spoilers, so it's up to you. Thanks. :)
Hey!
(so I decided to not post the book quotes in here after all, I do think they impact most when read in the story.)
Lestat's turning is abduction (from his bed where he is sleeping with Nicolas), being held captive, and being turned against his will. It is written as rape with forced orgasm. In the book it happens within a day or two, but the show has expanded the time frame to a week already, so they are planning to make it... worse.
Lestat fights Magnus every step of the way, literally, vocally and mentally. He says 'no' when asked, even when on the threshold of death. He does not want to become a monster. Magnus feeds on him, repeatedly, throws him into a cell with the ones he has "discarded" before. "Makes" him love him, by sending spells and visions, tortures and physically hurts him.
It is horrific. And I do think it will be worse on the show.
Rolin Jones is on record on the season 1 podcast, saying Lestat had the most traumatic entrance to it all:
“If I had to line them up and say who had the most traumatic entrance into this world as a vampire, it's Lestat. You have no idea the baggage that he is carrying into North America. We are playing with point of view and stick with Lestat. He's got a lot of pain, folks.”
And he's right.
We have had only hints, and ... given what the book gives us? And given what the show does, namely dial the darkness up to 11?
It's going to be horrific to watch.
I was prompted a while back to write about it, and the result is a fic where I tried to exorcise my own fears wrt what will be part of s3... if you want to read it, it's "Monstrous are what monsters be", but do consider the tags, please.

Perrenette Rolin's Signet Ring from Beaune, France dated to the Mid 15th Century on display at the Hôtel-Dieu Museum in Beaune, France
This woman's ring shows the arms of Perrenette Rolin, the daughter of the first cousin of Nicolas Rolin's father, and the wife of Jean Jacquelin, an adviser to the Duke of Burgundy Philippe le Bon. It is the sort of signet ring used by the upper classes in the 15th century. The octagonal bezel with a hollowed out cord running around shows a coat of arms of Perrenette Rolin. The ring was discovered in a vineyard in Beaune 1862 and was bought by the Comte Anatolie de Juine, who donated it to the Hôtel-Dieu Museum.

"“What are the challenges about the books going forward? Not a lot of forward-looking story. It’s a lot of looking back. Origin, origin, origin origin. And so I don’t know how many times we can tell the origin of and how exciting that is,” Jones said. “I don’t think you know, you wouldn’t want to lean on O”h, point of view. Let’s look at this in another ‘Rashomon’ way.” How to get around that? Jones suggest they might “lean in a bit more” to the framework of Lestat becoming a rock star and telling the world his tale. “Lestat is, for the first time a forward guy, I mean, if you embrace those opening pages, and you say, the story is about a rock star, you know, maybe that’s where we’d be leaning a little bit more about what would be surprising,” he said “And then we have the same tasks that we had the first two seasons, which is making it exciting for people who have never read the book made exciting for people who have memorized every comma of the book.”"
Err....
I very much hope Rolin is not saying what I'm reading here... because what I'm reading is "There won't be much eighteenth century Lestat..." and that idea makes me very nervous, because:
Anne Rice's writing of this era is the absolute best
This is the era we get to truly learn who Lestat is at his core: his ideology, his childhood and early experiences and his philosophies and beliefs that will underpin all he goes on to do and be as a vampire
Seems odd too as they've mentioned Nicolas so much... but is he just going to be a footnote?
I'll stop there, as I hope I'm just overthinking things. I would personally say The Vampire Lestat isn't about a rock star at all - it is merely set up in that book, for Queen of the Damned. That said, I'm as excited as anyone for rock star Lestat... but not to the detriment of A LOT of time in Lestat's origin story.... *nervous quivering*.....
ETA: PLEASE, SOMEONE CONVINCE ME I HAVE MISUNDERSTOOD THIS!?! I AM CONCERNED....

Some lines from the IWTV episode 1 script I thought were particularly interesting:
Tumblr media
'Slave to a mediocre star' okay babe. It's the sun
Tumblr media
Super interesting to have Daniel thinking of his class as 'whoring himself online', it invites a direct comparison to Louis' original line of work as well as their relationship when he says Louis 'stroked his ego'.. good stuff...
Tumblr media
More Daniel/Louis flirting. Which I GREATLY enjoy
Tumblr media
Was Lestat telling Miss Lily about Nicolas?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SCREAMING over this!!!!!!????
Tumblr media
There's a lot I could say about this. But I think I won't!
Tumblr media
Another interesting change here. This dialogue strongly implies that Louis hasn't actually accepted his sexuality as he claims. I felt that this was subtly implied in the episode itself too, but the phrase 'come to terms' as opposed to 'come to embrace' is really telling, plus obviously him struggling to actually say the word.
And finally:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
😵😵😵😵😵😵😵😵😵😵😵
Now, overall thoughts on the script under the cut:
I understand that it's an early draft, but it was a fascinating read. It seems that they really simplified and tightened it later, and I would say that in my opinion, all the changes ended up being for the better (with two exceptions: Lestat gulping down holy water and Louis climaxing after Lestat's first bite 😳 sorry I am a simple man). In this script Louis is implied to be bi rather than gay, and there's a bunch of New Orleans characters that feel pretty caricature-ish and I'm glad they got rid of, plus Babette who feels pretty redundant in this version of the story, with Grace filling her role nicely in the show.
Then there's the subject of, well, the horniness. The threesome scene with Miss Lily in the script is pretty pornographic, and in general there's enough direct references to dicks that make me think that originally Rolin Jones thought he'd be able to be a LOT more explicit. That being said, some parts also feel a bit... straighter? It's hard to pinpoint and is pretty subjective, though. Anyway, I don't want to jump to conclusions when I don't know anything about the process of making a TV show, but I do wonder when in the process the decision was made to tone the explicitness down, who made that choice and what the reasons were.
Ultimately, I'm extremely happy with what we ended up with. It seems to me that all the right decisions have been made when it came to editing this script and when adapting the source material in general. I can't even say I'm bummed that the show ended up less explicit than the script, as the poetic/artistic quality of the romance in the show felt more fitting to how Louis would remember and describe those experiences. That being said, this was a wonderful read. Highly recommend if it interests you at all.

Have you read the books? Cause Lestat explicitly said that he loves Louis more than he ever loved Nicolas "Louis gained a hold over me far more powerful than Nicolas ever had" and they were doomed to fail. Rolin said they are doing the books and that's what happened in the books.
Yeah! I’m in the middle of QOTD rn so I’m aware don’t worry 💀 It’s why I said that if they were to go that route I’d feel a certain way about it, (that being that I’d have a problem with it). But I’m also aware that the show is it’s own thing in some regards and if that were to happen then I wouldn’t be too surprised. I highly doubt that Rolin or Hannah or any of the writers would have Lestat say that he loves Nicki more then Louis but again we’ll just have to wait and see. That’s kinda just my response to every theory and hypothetical that people throw my way about the show..

I just don't see the Nicki/Louis similarities, ESPECIALLY in the show context. If anything, they will parallel in being opposites.
Wellllllllllll..... I mean, Rolin... approached Louis as a character through the lens of Lestat's previous relationships, namely Nicki and Gabrielle.
I'm not joking. This is the relevant transcript of the podcast (after Naomi asks about Louis being black now):
“I kind of came around to his ethnicity through a very weird way, which is through Lestat. So there's a very famous sort of rewrite of Lestat, starting with book two. He's aggressively different character than he was in book one. But that's the Lestat that she carried on for the rest of time. And I was like, OK, that should be Lestat. And so we tried to take the given circumstances that are set with Lestat and put it back into this time period. And so he had this sort of super emo relationship with this guy named Nicky. And then he had a very excitable relationship with his mother as his second companion choice. And get into that season three, y'all. And then I was like, let's give Lestat a legitimate third attempt to try to figure out how to be with somebody for the rest of his life. And how do you not repeat your mistakes? So it started from there. And I wanted somebody who had some money, because I think he wanted to be with his own folks there. And I think he wanted someone, I thought, who could fight back and who could be a challenge and who would force him to restrain himself. And nobody at AMC was really interested in seven seasons of The Regretful Plantation Owner. So even with that, though, you wanted to have some connective threads to the novel. So we made Louis come from a lineage that once did own a plantation, did own slaves. The other thing was sort of aesthetic. If you were going to take away the ruffled shirts and all the swampy goodness and you wanted to make this, okay, something new. What's the next hot time that had a sense of smell and taste and sound? Birth of Jazz seemed pretty, pretty right on. And it just so happened there was a spot at that historical time where a black man could get in on some business and still have the sort of morally gray thing that owning a plantation would. And I don't know, it all actually clicked into place pretty quickly.”
Rolin Jones on the Podcast. *shrugs*
The show went about this brilliantly and color-consciously (thank god), much more than the transcript here can convey, obviously.
But it's still an intent of character building, namely the changes, the enhancements they made to Louis (from a character POV) being that what Lestat wanted (and did not get, for various reasons) from his other companions.
I mean, Lestat was very clear about the similarities between Nicolas and Louis in the book. He was also very clear as to where Louis surpassed Nicolas there (and Lestat's feelings). And Rolin obviously is aware of that.
I don't really see Louis as an opposite. I see him as someone more than what reminded Lestat of Nicki, and the one that Lestat ultimately fell for - fatally.
And I think that holds for book and show version.

I went with my friends Dana, Ashlyn and Liz. We stayed in an incredible loft right in the heart of Beaune. The video doesn’t do it justice.

We visited the Hospices de Beaune which was a hospital built for the poor in 1443!!
Plagiarization from Wikipedia:
Chancellor Nicolas Rolin founded the Hospices de Beaune as the country was coming out of the 100 years war, a period of unrest and plague that decimated the countryside. It was for the poor and the most disadvantaged that this masterpiece inspired by the most outstanding hôtels-Dieu of Flanders and Paris was built. Behind the austere slate roofs of the facade are the stunning courtyard, beautiful varnished tile roofs and overhead skylights. All around the courtyard, the harmonious organisation of buildings rule the life of this charitable institution: under the hull-shaped arches of the poor room, the sick were welcomed in, and in the kitchen with its huge Gothic chimneys, meals were prepared, while the apothecary with its mortar and earthenware pots, was the preserve of the sister pharmacist.

Episode notes: And That’s the end of it. There’s nothing else.
- Nicolas de Lenfent 1769-1796 - So! Nicolas is 9 years younger than Lestat in TV Universe, and was only a vampire 2 years or less before he died. In the books he makes 30 years of “life” (mortal & immortal), but here… oh my - like all the artists… he’s in the 27 club. My heart. My broken heart 💔🎻
- Does Armand put a hypnotised *human* in a coffin, buried alive, to replace Louis!!!?!?? The torture of doing that, if so… 👀
- Both Louis & Lestat are driven to kinds of madness following Claudia’s death. That Claudia’s death is so large a part of this episode is beautiful & as it ought to be 🥰🖤😭.
- The weapons-maker Louis kills who later talks to Louis… is he a ghost? I didn’t fully understand…?
- Daniel requests from Raglan James whether he has a version of the trial script… it isn’t just sent to him. How FABULOUS had Daniel Molloy been in S2… he also gave hints of potentially being the writer of Lestat’s tale too in this episode? Though personality-wise, becoming a vampire has evidently amped up what was Daniel’s already clear SPICE! We are here for it!
- Lestat in Magnus’ tower was confusing. Armand knows he’s there… Armand knows Lestat saved Louis. Why would Armand let Louis see Lestat when he knows Lestat could tell him *he* saved him?
- Has Lestat actually been locked up there in TV Universe or did he choose to be there?!? Even if Lestat doesn’t want to tell Louis *he* saved him (which is indeed pretty book-Lestat to not say it to Louis), why does he let Louis go, to be with the incredibly dangerous Armand?! I’m confused regarding motivations.
- I can presume some of Lestat’s motivations are due to feeling he deserves punishment for Claudia’s death, which he has watched… but not to the extent of endangering Louis (as being with Armand might..?!)
- Thankfully we have much to analyse over the break (e.g. Armand’s notes on The Trial script!)
- “You have no idea of Claudia’s strength!” expresses Lestat’s love of Claudia in such a poignant, yet simple & quick way 🥰.
- I just want to say ERIC IS SO FANTASTIC IN THIS EPISODE! Omg, I am SO in love with Eric! I am SO happy he is a vampire, in his own body & a SPICY vampire at that. I bow down to thee, Eric: I love you.
- Assad remains incredible. They’re making Armand *more* evil than in the books even, and he’s evil there!! But, Assad: there is no thing your Armand could do that could diminish my love for your Armand. YOU, Assad are for me The Greatest Revelation of S2!
- Eric (I wrote this last night & wrote no more, LOL: Eric. !!!!)
- I will say the ending didn’t feel exactly as the book.
- I love that the “You & Me” music is in the final scene of the series as that’s the most emotional S2 was for me - the end of E1!
- Did I love the episode? I loved the Loustat. I loved Eric. I loved the WOODEN PIANO THAT IS MY ACTUAL HEART.
- But…
- It isn’t the feeling of the books
- I don’t understand why or how Lestat got to Paris?
- I don’t understand why Armand wanted Louis dead
- I don’t understand whether Lestat has even been into The Earth?
- I don’t understand how coerced or not Lestat was in Paris? Did Armand ever have him locked up? Why is he even in Magnus’ tower?
- Swaying-Lestat at the trial is clearly a result of the energy expended in saving Louis now, so now I wonder: was Armand actually mind-controlling Lestat during the trial at all? Or no?
- Sam Reid’s emotion in this episode: LESTAT ABOVE, S3 is gonna be an EMOTION-GIFT!!
- I want to know every single word Louis & Lestat said to each other. If we do not work it out, we have failed.
- Lestat says to Louis - “I need you to….????”
- Louis’ words are at such a distance it will be harder to decipher, but I believe we can decipher Lestat here, for sure…?!

Ppps
1: Loustat!!
