"How did everyone fall for him despite of the obvious red flags?"

An IRL recently asked me this and I think it's good to share my response here, too.

Since the very beginning William Gold sold us, his fan base, on the idea that Wilbur Soot was his digital persona. A fictional character / alter ego he acted through. In SootHouse, in the ARG, the comedy songs, and in normal streams. Wil was meant as a parody of incel culture. So anything super alarm worthy was dismissed as in character.

This became a major problem for Wil when the DSMP exploded in popularity. As suddenly thousands of new eyes were on the first song of the Boyfriend Trilogy and his old work. Wil rushed to remove the most offensive and criticized works of his. He had to morph the Wil character from a creepy freak into a more tolerable one; landing on a charming, self aware, famous egomaniac.

He made this switch and tried to paint more separation between 'himself', Wilbur Soot the character, and DSMP!Wilbur. But often would use it as a shield for criticism. When he said rude / did things people assumed it was a joke.

That's why he got away with this for so long. He openly joked about biting Niki all the time and we, the fans, didn't bat an eye. It's not the audience's fault for having literal years of content telling us not to take him seriously.

Okay okay hopefully last thing about Wilbur Soot.

Looking back at his lyrics (yes I hyperannylized this shit, I have no regrets) it all makes sense now.

I never wanted to say anything like this, but the lyrics “All this over a kiss. You weren’t there, so why you pressed by this?” Always stood out as kind of shitty. Again, that’s just my opinion and it probably means nothing in the current situation, I just wanted to get that off my chest.

Besides this, his lyrics in general just kind of seem shitty. He wrote about abuse and horrible people. How jealousy can drive anger and abuse. He wrote about everything he was. Angry, shitty, jealous, and abusive.

We all know Shubble and Niki aren’t the only victims. That’s obvious. The people he was close to, his friends, though they may not have spoken out, they were manipulated too.

Just like Billzo said in his response. He saw Wilbur be an ass towards his friends. He saw manipulation. But nothing could be said thanks to the platform he once had.

Looking back at old streams, too, there’s so much stuff we passed off as brotherly. We didn’t know any better, of course. That’s not our fault. It’s Wilbur’s. He tricked us. He tricked his friends.

Remember when Tommy said he felt uncomfortable around Wilbur, and he just came in and pushed Tommy away. No? I didn’t either. Because we were tricked into believing that Wilbur was being helpful. Manipulation at its finest.

Everything was just so fucked up. And there may have been signs, as I’ve just pointed out, but we didn’t notice. Nobody could have noticed. There was no way anyone could take one look at him and have gone “this guys an abuser”.

Anyone can say they knew all along, but did they? Sure, they could have been skeptical but that doesn’t mean they were sure he was an ass. In all reality, we were all just fans who were fooled by him into believing he did, and could do, nothing wrong.

That’s not anybody’s fault but his.

One final thing, nobody who was involved with the abuser owes anything. No apology. No statement. They don’t even have to acknowledge the situation.

It’s their lives. But the fuck out of it. They owe nobody anything. Let them cope.

Let them find their stance on the situation. If they choose to say something, good for them. If they choose move on and never say anything about it, that’s not our business.

as an ex-mcyt/dsmp fan (can you believe it?), i am really disappointed in wilbur and his actions. the fact that they had a safe word, and he continued, that his friends came out of their shells and were willing to speak of their experiences with him around them and their friends…it’s upsetting.

+ his apology ?? absolute shit.

he was one of my inspirations in the form of music when their (lovejoy’s) first ep had came out and now all i want is to disassociate myself from all his content and any form of musical creation.

i hope many are distanced from him now. and i hope the victims, such as shelby, niki, even rue (tommy’s roommate), are safe now, and more joyful and free now that they’ve talked about the situation.

What happened to Niki and who do I need to kill?

niki went to dream's concert with bella poarch last night!

and then people on twitter began attacking her for it because they can't see her as her own person that might know things behind the scenes better than them or trust her to make correct choices and instead treat her like a child that needs to be told what to do.

anyway, it sucks. niki is such a wonderful person, she's so open with her emotions and a great streamer and i love her. i hope she's okay.

Technoblade

At first I thought the video was click bait, but after watching it the whole way through it finally sunk in.

Technoblade (which I now know to be Alex) was the first 'new generation' minecrafter that I subscribed to and liked, his humor,his dreamsmp character, and content in general really. He was a relatable figure for me, he inspired me to get back into Minecraft, he loved greek mythology like me etc.

I could sit here and talk about how much his content got me through bad times anyday of the week really...

But I'm kinda speechless today.... Sorta numb to be honest still trying to process really what has happened.

I know I'll cry later, I know I'll hurt later

and if me a simple watcher of him feels grief this strong I can't even imagine how his friends, parents,or siblings are going to survive this....

Goodbye Technoblade, you were an inspiration to many and I hope that if there is an afterlife your in the best part of it.

yk what, man? I want justice for Nihachu. The dsmp fandom and mcyttwt treated her horribly, especially when she started distancing herself from W*lbur and accused the dsmp writing team (headed by him) of pushing her out. She's undergone so much abuse in her life and there is no way her relationship with W*lbur, whatever it was like, was healthy. She deserves so much love and support.
