again with the contagiousness of fathers. when pierre attacks helène we’re told “his father’s nature showed itself” in him, and now andrei "smiled like his father, coldly, maliciously, and unpleasantly". and before him there was marya, horrified to find herself punishing little nikolai as her father did with her. it’s a streak constantly threatening to emerge and wreck the children’s attempts at developing an alternative view and way of life, a weight pulling them down.

Tolstoy leaves you little realizations buried underneath the apparent narrative like landmines. For example, when the narration stays with Princess Marya's thoughts, you forget that she's actually very wealthy, because she never ever, not once, not ever, even thinks about how vastly wealthy she is. Part of it is that she was raised badly by her evil idiot father, but most of it is because of her sheltered, clueless religiosity. So it comes as a shock that when Rostov meets her, he first notes her serene eyes, then puts an attractiveness filter over her IRL face composed of his awareness of her money. Her money is also the first thing anyone ever mentions about her in his social circle.
For another - the peasants seem to have good reasons for behaving as they do, and they even rebel a bit when Marya Bolkonsky tries to disrupt their lives. But the second military masculine power shows up to deal a single act of violence in the form of Nikolai Rostov, all of them fall directly in line. Total obedience from the serfs is achieved in literally minutes in the face of a very minor act of violence (knocking the hat off of someone as he's talking).
