The Bulgarian Parliament has adopted changes to the Law on School and Pre-School Education, banning the promotion of ideas and views related to "non-traditional sexual orientation or determination of gender identity other than biological."

The debate lasted nearly four hours. In the first reading, out of 171 representatives, 154 voted "in favor," eight "against," and nine abstained. Seven deputies from "We Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria" (WCC-DB) and one from GERB voted "against." After the first reading, the deputies proceeded to debates in the second reading, where WCC-DB did not support the bill, and their entire group voted "against."

The parliament adopted a definition stating: "Non-traditional sexual orientation is different from the generally accepted and embedded in the Bulgarian legal tradition concept of emotional, romantic, sexual or sensual attraction between persons of opposite sexes."

The bill's proponents, the pro-Russian party "Revival" (Vazrazhdane) led by Kostadin Kostadinov, argue that recent public propaganda normalizing non-traditional sexual orientation is unacceptable and contradicts the constitutional provision for marriage as a relationship between a man and a woman.

The bill's proponents claim that promoting socio-cultural models of non-traditional sexual orientation near schools does not align with Bulgarian legal tradition. During the parliamentary committee discussion, the Minister of Education and Science, Galin Tsokov, supported the bill's motives but found the proposed changes "vaguely worded and controversial," which could complicate implementation. Tsokov did not attend today's debates.

The bill aims to start a comprehensive conversation about the educational system's function, considering all adverse impacts on students. During the bill's presentation, Daniel Prodanov from "Revival" mentioned its relevance to the summer Olympics in Paris.

Yordan Tsonev from the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) parliamentary group announced their support for the bill, emphasizing the importance of children's upbringing according to binary gender principles. Petar Nikolov from GERB argued against the propaganda imposing alternative sexual orientation, highlighting Bulgaria's "Christian essence". Meanwhile, his party colleague Delyan Dobrev called for an end to the debate, as it had turned into a contest of support for the bill.

Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP)'s Georgi Svilenski and the resigned party leader, Kornelia Ninova, referred to a handbook by the non-governmental organization "Rainbow Hub", alleging it contained explanations of non-standard sexual practices. Ninova declared herself against "gender propaganda." Elisaveta Belobradova from WCC-DB criticized the bill as heavy populism, far from Christianity, aiming to create communities, not divide.

Kostadin Kostadinov defended the bill, citing a foreign-authored textbook on sexual education for children up to six years old. He stressed the need to prevent such education at a tender age. A protest against the law banning "gay propaganda" is organized today at 6:30 p.m. on "Nezavisimost" square, demanding the bill's rejection and measures against student harassment based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

After a break requested by WCC-DB for amendments, "Revival" accused them of being pressured by the American embassy. The debate devolved into personal insults between Yavor Bozhankov from WCC-DB and "Revival." During a brief disorder, several deputies from Kostadinov's party followed Bozhankov menacingly, but the presiding parliament intervened to calm the situation. Another break was requested, and after resuming, the deputies moved to a second vote.

The Vampire Diaries, Ep. 1x01

Pilot

they did not name the pilot, but that's okay, most shows don't. however, sometimes pilot works for a show, sometimes it means something more than 'we are in hollywood and they didn't want us to name this thing.' for instance, in one of the (many) soft reboots of doctor who in recent years, for season 10, the final season of peter capaldi as the twelfth doctor, the first episode is called the pilot. the pilot is a character in that story, has a meaning. there is no pilot in the vampire diaries. from the very beginning, this show is pilot-less. it does not seem like any of the characters are driving the plot. unlike similar shows, like teen wolf and buffy the vampire slayer, there is not a choice in this episode that makes it clear that our protagonist(s) have agency over the things that happen to them. there is no 'body in the woods,' body of water or otherwise. there is no rush towards the graveyard after a girl we barely know. there is just a girl and her sometimes ridiculously overwrought diary.

i want to take a moment to discuss my history with vampires. simply put, i'm obsessed. i watched buffy the vampire slayer in high school and it fundamentally change me (for better and worse). i think about vampires a lot. i talk about vampires a lot. my classmates are not always very receptive to this as we are in grad school for physics and most physicists do not talk about vampires loudly in the office every day for months. i am more interesting than most physicists (i like to think.) i will compare the vampire diaries to buffy many times. i think many of those times will make tvd look bad. i have also seen teen wolf. teen wolf changed me too. when i watched the first episode of tvd, i thought 'he's so derek hale' about damon. then i realized that derek hale is so damon. this will not be the last time this happens, i am sure.

i have not seen the vampire diaries before. i have multiple friends who are obsessed with it, so it's not like i know nothing, but i'm coming to this from a position of familiarity with vampires, not these vampires. my immediate goal is to learn the rules of this particular set. it is not as easy as i would like.

full disclosure here: i watched this episode about two weeks ago. i just read a summary of what happens in this episode specifically because, unlike buffy, like teen wolf, tvd thus far exists in an unbroken stream in my mind. individual episodes are not distinct from each other, not units of meaning, simply dependent clauses in the runon sentence of this season. but we'll come back to that at the end of the season, probably.

dear god, so much stuff happens in this episode. i'm not going to talk about all of it. we are introduced to elena, who should have a cooler last name than gilbert. she is played by nina dobrev who is quite hot. she dresses like i did in elementary school (i was in elementary school when this episode premiered.) i find it very unnerving. we are then introduced to an absolute glut of characters who are hard to distinguish between and also incredibly difficult to remember (especially the men). no one looks the age they theoretically are. notably in the fucking revolving door of characters who pop out of the woodwork to assault me with their two thousand nine fashion, we meet bonnie. i like bonnie. she has prophetic visions and will become a witch. i was told i would like bonnie before i started watching this show. my best friend was correct. i love bonnie. i am more interested in her than anyone else. nevertheless, she, like all the other teenage characters, behaves in a way that i'm pretty sure american high schoolers didn't, even in two thousand nine. why was there such a big blowout party in the middle of the fucking woods with beautiful lanterns everywhere. (props to tvd for being able to light scenes well, even when they are in in-universe darkness. it is much better than some more recent shows i know.)

we also meet two vampires. they are obviously vampires, even if i didn't know about stefan and damon before just by virtue of having been a teenage girl when this show was coming out (to reconcile this time statement with earlier statements about my age, this show ran for eight seasons.) both of them are incredibly creepy. the only difference in how i felt about them after the pilot is that one of them is creepy and hasn't bitten a teenage girl in this episode and one of them is creepy and has bitten a teenage girl in this episode. stefan is currently my favorite (the non-biter. i like my 'good' vampires to do consensual biting.) i still not care for stefan all that much.

tatia was likely not the first doppelganger, but is the first known doppelganger through amara's line. she was also born and raised during the viking age. she grew up and met her husband in ancient scandinavia. when her husband died she did not throw herself on his funeral pyre like most viking wives did at the time. instead she chose to keep on living, for her child and for herself. she believed she could find love somewhere again.

before long she traveled to a small village across the sea, which is where she would end up meeting the mikaelson family. it wasn't just them, but also where she understood the dangers of werewolves as they lived nearby. she stayed as safe as possible, but also managed to catch the eyes of two of the villagers. elijah and niklaus mikaelson. she knew how niklaus felt, but it was ultimately elijah she fell for. however, their mother esther had used her for a spell to turn her husband and children into vampires.

this turned their entire village into a major uproar. over the course of a month things got worse when klaus' werewolf heritage became known. tatia had tried to run and get her child to safety, but was seen by elijah. she wasn't able to get away in time and he sadly ended her life. after her body was given to esther, the mother witch used the rest of her blood for the hybrid curse on niklaus.

elijah attacking her is last memory. she doesn't know if her child got to safety or not, but due to the other doppelgangers being alive they did.

when tatia came back it took her time to adjust, but she managed to hold onto a job. the antique store gave her stability. though she still actively chooses to style her hair with braids as an homage to her viking heritage. she also loves to speak norwegian. it can also come out when she's angry sometimes.

As Bulgaria’s government readies to rotate in March, the ruling coalition is divided over ministerial positions amid renewed bickering and talk of new elections.

“The easiest option is for us to go to elections again, we’re ready for this, but it isn’t the right thing to do,” GERB former Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said on Thursday. 

In June last year, after a two-year election cycle, two opposing blocs – GERB and its satellite party UDF on one side and the reformist duo We Continue the Change and Democratic Bulgaria on the other – agreed on a cabinet. 

The deal was that in the first nine months the government would be lead by We Continue the Change’s Nickolai Denkov and in March 2024, GERB’s Mariya Gabriel, a former EU commissioner, would take over. The two would then switch again after a further nine months.

But GERB’s wish that Gabriel simultaneously serve as Foreign Minister is at odds with its partners’ wishes. “For us, it’s important who will tell the EU what’s happening in Bulgaria,” PM Denkov said on Thursday, adding that several changes in the proposed ministerial list are still under negotiation. 

Meanwhile, GERB MP Delyan Dobrev promoted a total cabinet makeover, saying on TV on Wednesday: “Our colleagues should admit they have failed and pass the torch to us to make a cabinet on our own.”

Speculation around whether the cabinet has the potential to stay together until the end of its mandate has even gave birth to a particular political slang; the coalition is often called the “sglobka” (“the ready-made” or “put-together one”) or “the non-coalition coalition”. 

Whether the switch will happen smoothly, or become a platform to reignite old debates, remains unclear – but as of now, the latter looks more likely. 

Borissov also reignited speculation that voting fraud led to his party losing Sofia in the recent mayoral elections. On Wednesday, he claimed the Sofia elections were “bought, manipulated”, and was open to them being annulled and re-voted, He also referred to the governance of current mayor Vassil Terziev as “impotent”. After being nominated by We Continue the Change and Democratic Bulgaria, Terziev won the mayoral elections in November, ending GERB’s 18-year rule over the capital. 

On Thursday, Terziev said he would comply if a competent institution decides there’s been wrongdoing – but also took a stab at GERB’s own corruption record. “All of these accusations of fraud are coming from people who have a lot of experience in wagging the dog around elections,” Terziev told the media. 

In BIRN’s 2024 Looking Forward analysis, political analyst Yavor Siderov predicted that the coalition would have a hard time staying on track.

“This parliamentary union is based on two factors: constitutional reform and keeping [pro-Kremlin President] Radev isolated as possible. Both have been checked,” he wrote.  “This means that the challenges for Bulgaria now are mainly in terms of foreign policy: Schengen and Eurozone entrance, EU enlargement in the Western Balkans, responding adequately to the Russo-Ukrainian war, and tackling migration.”

The exact date when Gabriel will step in as Prime Minister remains unspecified.

Her dad left when she was young, she doesn’t really remember him but it was probably her mom’s fault. She was in and out of relationships her whole life, packing them up and moving every time they went sour. 

That’s probably why Iris doesn’t know how to sit still, settle down, or have a healthy relationship. She just goes with the flow and that’s what brought her to moving around the country. 

When she finished high school she got a job as a bartender and started to explore. It was a great job because she could ditch at any point and not have to wait for the final paycheck in the mail. 

Nothing specific brought Iris to this town, it was just somewhere she was passing through and got a vibe. People were all on edge and she wanted to know more so she grabbed an apartment and a job and absorbed all of information. 

PERSONALITY.

Iris is a sassy and snarky individual who loves to gossip. She doesn’t get attached to people because she likes to keep moving so that would only hold her back. She doesn’t do relationships, only FWB or one night stands, preferably in public. The girl is very pushy and blunt and doesn’t know how to keep her mouth shut.
