Ninjago Fic Rec Week (2024): Day 4

Prompts: AU/Movieverse/OCs! (Catching Up! I uh skipped Day 3 oop but I've got plenty to offer for this day! Which is...also late...don't look at meeee)

Aus WITH OCs (or as I like to call this list, my own personal indulgence corner. All the AUs/Movieverse stories I've read are ones that get recc'ed a lot already + I myself have already recc'ed them at one point or another, soooo let's throw some pure spotlight onto some OC stories! Even if a lot of it is connected to me to some degree that's irrelevant):

As The Years Pass By: A fic currently in the process of being rewritten/reworked but still chock full of next-gen Dragons Rising goodness! And it stars the one, the only, Jenna and Ethan from @rainofthetwilight!!!! This fic made me fall in love with her characters and I've loved reading/seeing/drawing these two adorable kids ever since!!!!

Dad!Jay AU by @taddymason: An AU so good I'm still catching up on reading it bit by bit to savor it for longer *-*)9 All the stories in this series are worth the read alone for the accumulation of taddy's character Kaida (a girl who needs no introduction–she's that awesome guys, trust me) but also the eventual father-daughter bond with amnesiac!Jay that is gripping and engaging aaaaall the wall through!!

I Carve This Poem From the Harshest of Storms: Another I'm not caught up with YET (a running theme for this Fic Week, it seems hgfhgfdfgds i'm sorry I'm slow and have a short-attention span). It follow two fascinating peeps in The Administration following The Merge, and without giving too much away, @theartsyswissapple ‘s voices for the characters just POP and make them feel SO real and it's been intriguing to read so far so yeah others should give it a try too!!!

What it Takes for You to See Me: A Spinjitzu bros story with added FSM and Mystake goodness too!!! This is one I've just started reading myself, but you know I love some throwbacks to Wu and Garmadon's past! And the OC here, @marhan-writes-n-draws's Amka, fits into the setting like a glove!!

Honeycomb: Gotta give a shoutout to @miqotepotatoe's Lucy while I'm here too!! Some short, sweet snippets of the Ninja Team's best (and most yellow) cheerleader!! I love her dynamic with everyone, and especially Cole <3

The Space Between Us: A very deep and heart-wrenching introspective into @k1ngtok's characters Lynda and Jamie, Master(s) of Space. It's story about siblings and bonds at its core, but also be mindful of tag of you're looking to dig deeper! (it also takes place in legacyverse technically but that's neither here or there I promise)

Flowery Language Another super funny and endearing story by King following Jesse (hey it's my boy!!) and Antonia on the case to discover who's been leaving flowers in Jesse's locker (spoiler: it's not Cole lmao). It's actually a semi-sequel to this old thing *I* wrote however long ago, but thaaaat's not required reading (though it does help). If you want more of a fix for the Jesse-Antonia duo + more of Jamie, this is the story to read!

Learning to Love (Again): Yet another King fic based in legacyverse (a coincidence), this one kiiiind of takes place during Season 2/Book 3 and follows Jamie on his quest to truly show his friends (Nya, Antonia, Harumi, Jesse, and...Olivia?!) just how much he cares about them through the power of love languages over the course of a week and it is AWESOOOOOOOOME!! Soooo many touching and feel-good moments, mostly soft slice-of-life with teenagers being teenagers, and is a great pick-me up when your soul is feeling sad ;w;)/ I advocate for this one just for the warm soft friendshippy-feelings it gives me alone!!! AAAAAA—

Something About Morning Glories: Jesse (oop there he is again) takes it upon to himself to comfort Jay after the latter finds himself concerned about something following obtaining his True Potential. A duo I desperately want to write more about but can't yet, so this little bit of foundation for their relationship will have to suffice for now ;w;)/

(and if you're still clamoring for more of a certain magic pink fool, there's plenty more where that came from; perhaps there may be a Jesse-Antonia friendship origin story on deck soon, along with maybe some DR stuff~! ...listen there will never be a good chance to self-advertise like this again!! In the Company of the Stars: A tale as old as time—a Royal!AU where the fair groundskeeper of a palace's garden (that's the OC) falls head over heels for the prince far out of his league (that's Cole)—except, the prince absolutely likes him back...albeit only as his secret, suave alter-ego. But is that really true—and, more importantly, is there bigger problems to deal with right now???? There's romance, mystery, good food, royal drama, angst, fluff, sabotage, magic, a whole bunch of flowers, Harumi causing chaos on purpose, Skylor throws Chad across a room, Jay goes on a rampage a some point, Kai can't flirt to save his life—the author just needs some fresh motivation to post the darn next chapter already because the ending's gonna be really really good ;V

children of storm au : nya design

thought+hcs under the cut / crystallized+seabound spoilers!!

1, top: I drew the top specifically to be easier for nya to move around in because I noticed that in a lot of her designs, she gets either a dress or a skirt to wear, even when she stated that she hates dresses? also, the skirt would probably get in her way as it's too easy for someone to grab and pull her back.

2, yang pin: after seabound, nya started to treasure the gifts that she had been given over the years more, including the yang pin that jay had given her at the end of season 10. before, she left it in a box in her room for safe keeping, but now she wears it everywhere. she does this even with meaningless little trinkets she receives, as a way to appreciate everything in her life better :)

3, dragon horns and facial markings: I forgot to draw these with morro's design but they both got dragon horns when they got their human forms back! morro's look like wispy strands of wind, and nya's are similar to pieces of coral. they can will them away, but they'll reappear whenever they use their powers

4, leg band: while skylor was trying her best to keep nya's body solid while the other ninjago got aspheera out during crystallized, a part of nya's leg slightly melted away by accident. by the time aspheera had shown up, no one had noticed and just went ahead with the spell, but her leg was only semi-functional and now pressure needs to applied to it constantly

5, wave design: each of the ninja have embroidered designs on the bottom of their pants to represent them and their element. nya and morro are matching with their similar wave/cloud designs

Season 5 non-reaction spoilers.

At this point everyone is talking about the animation and at this point everyone knows the animation isn’t the same.

So at least there is no spoilers just me telling about the animation.

While I do agree, Lego having changed studios/choosing Wildbrain because they are COMPLETELY biased. (You don’t need me to tell you that somehow they started to CARE about LMK’s advertising the moment Wildbrain stepped up to take the show, like seriously Lego, it’s like you WANT to show how biased you are) is not the best decision…

The animation is fine…sure there’s evidence of tweening here and there but to be fair Flying Bark was working with a semi-anime-esque artstyle and that’s very VERY hard to replicate unfortunately, even Flying Bark struggled with their own artstyle back in Season 1. And Wild Brain specializes in tweening instead of Frame-By-Frame animation, so please, let’s not compare the two since they’re both COMPLETELY different animation styles (I should know, I tried doing both in my youth)

The animation is decent enough, it’s fluid and it reminds me of my days watching MLP.

I also think they’re going for a more comic-esque artstyle instead of anime-esque? Like you know those old animation sequences with DC and Marvel comics where they would semi-animate the panels? Yeah that. That’s kinda the vibe I was sensing in the animation itself

I would say they need to work on the lighting and their lineart if that’s the only thing I think is iffy about the animation as a whole…

But anyway, the animation is fine, they need to work on a few things but hey animators can improve over time.

They did the same with Ninjago which is 3D, considering how the new DR fight scenes look badass as hell compared to the previous seasons.

Weapon of choice: Mother's katana and Father's sabre. Varies most of the time. Element: Darkness Manipulation Abilities:

Shadow Generation -The power to generate shadows and darkness. (inspired by Lord Garmadon during the pilot episodes. We should really extend the use of that or give reason why he gave that up. Shade is capable of this as well but it was only ever in the mobile game.)

Shadow Camouflage - The power to become invisible while in shadows. (inspiration: Shade and the Shinobi from Samurai Jack)

Status: Alive Bio: Katherina here is the daughter of the previous Master of Darkness, Luther, and Clarissa, Lady Azure of the Dragon Samurai. She is their fourth child after their eldest, Xander and their twin girls, Mariana and Veronica. She lived in a city far away from the world of Ninjago with her parents having left that world behind in order to not let their young get involved with any fantastical affairs of the like. However they couldn't escape the world of fantasy after all. Katherina was open to the world and she grew up in it. One day, during one of her adventures while she was a teen, she had lost her brother due to a blast of magic and it would be sometime after the event of her loss that she would be framed for something she didn't do, due to her powers waking up after so long, and her grandparents on her mother's side had given her a way to get out of trouble. Unfortunately this would lead her back to Ninjago where she was needed the most. With her panicking and her powers sometimes lashing out with her not being taught to use them right, she was eventually found by Wu and the team of Ninja with their most recent addition, Sam, their wind kunoichi. It took Lord Garmadon to sift through the Darkness to reach Katherina. (Recalling how Leila, the former Master of Shadow had done the same for Luther, their old "friend".) Kathy would eventually be taught her powers correctly (more like without accidentally leaving a door open to Overlord, but she doesn't know that yet) and she joined the fight against the Serpentine. However, it was one night on her own that she would meet a Serpentine Hybrid who, for some reason, she felt a strong connection to and felt the need to hear him out and help him in their endeavor to take down Pythor and his followers.

Relationships:

Luther and Clarissa: Her parents. They are semi-strict types and protective of her and her siblings. The protectiveness definitely shows when they find out she's with Wu, someone they tried so hard to avoid yet somehow got circled back to. Xander: Her older brother who she looked up to. The two of them went on their own adventures through the city they lived in, encountering so much and experiencing more than their fair share together until that incident happened. Mariana and Veronica: The older twin girls. For the most part, they were cordial with her like some siblings are. They were actually studying magic and sometimes Kathy would join, trying to hang out with them and sometimes being shot down, but not maliciously. When Xander died however, their demeanor to her changed, shutting her out nearly completely until she herself disappeared one day. Samantha: A kunoichi of wind who became her friend. Vasuki: He is a Hypnobrai-Anacondrai hybrid she had followed, mistaking him for one of Pythor's followers. After hearing him out and being led to the border of their encampment, the Ninja had mistaken her for being kidnapped but they find out it's not the case. Events come to pass, and Kathy and Vasuki are inseparable to the point of when she was done helping rebuild the City of Ouroboros after the Battle of the Devourer, he ended up following her and eventually becoming her partner.

Fun Facts:

Originally, she was a self insert in an RP years ago back on DeviantArt. That was until I gave her a different name and watched other material that would make up her backstory. If you've seen my old DeviantArt journals, you'd know what I had laid out for her. However the story did change quite a bit.

She didn't actually have an official ninja suit design that wasn't customized to her. The most I ever got was her color. Now her suit is based off of several things. There's the unused Leonardo concept, Karai's armor, and that one Ninja costume from this site. That's basically the three main things that helped.

The names her family members, notably her father and brother, are called aren't their real names but by middle names.

She is a middle child. However, her younger sibling Tsukiko would have been born around the time she became a teen, aka the time her powers were presenting itself, so she didn't get much time to get to know her.

There is a reason Vasuki and Katherina already feel so familiar with each other around their first meeting. Of course, that is spoiler related and only one other person knows about it.

She only has so few abilities because her father is keeping the other half of the Element of Darkness so she cannot reach true potential until after he gives it up. (He does not give it up willingly, of course. Especially after he's learned that using too much of the Darkness Element would lead Overlord to an open door. He doesn't want that for her.)

She will get an appearance in another fic. The current Ninjago fic I'm writing is another OC, one by a friend, and I still love her so.

I was going to give her the Romanian version of her name, Catalina, but the more I thought about it, I realized she didn't really look like a Catalina, not even a Catina. Maybe if she were vastly different, I would do so but Katherina had been stuck to her for so long that it feels wrong to give her another name.

Ninjago au where Wu didn’t age quickly so the entirety of the wildbrain era is that but the ninja are also trying to raise a baby whilst saving the world.

So s9 consists of Cole carrying around a baby, then Faith bonding with the baby (and learning the innocence of youth uncorrupted by the savage cruel world), to the iron baron kidnapping baby Wu (for plot convenience Baby Wu has some sort of mental link with Firstbourne and points in the right direction) to find the armour, and when they get there, the dragon kills iron baron and saves the baby.

S11 goes on to show the ninja struggling to parent Wu and really miss having the time to go on missions, so when they hear that a pyramid has been discovered, they decide to go on an adventure and they bring Wu along because Pixal is actually horrible awful awful at babysitting (she doesn’t have the patience and gets grossed out when trying to feed and change wu). Whilst yes, bringing a baby on a dangerous mission isn’t exactly sensible, in all fairness baby Wu is kinda resilient and semi indestructible bc he’s a literal demigod. Aspheera doesn’t even realise the baby is wu until she finds out after she gets to Ninjago.

Then aspheera manages to blast Zane to the never realm with baby Wu in his hands and somehow the Never Realm gets taken over by the Ice Emperor… and his baby son. The Ice Emperor but he’s a dad. Yeah. Vex makes a pretty awful babysitter, Grimfax is an okay babysitter and what if Vex decided to just yet Wu into the dungeons and tell the Ice Emp that Wu was lost in war which makes him really angry at the rest of the realm. And actually Wu is being looked after by Kataru, and Lloyd goes to Zane and shows him that Wu is fine and then Zane immediately remembers everything. (Also for the sake of au, this means Zane is only ice emperor for like at least a few weeks).

They just take Wu into prime empire and Wu gets to play one of those kids colouring games. Okino also gets to know the joys of children.

The ninja take Wu to shintaro, and when the others get captured, Vania briefly gets to babysit Wu, before Cole Vania and Wu get trapdoored by Vangelis. Cole kinda just has Wu in one of those baby backpacks.

The Island is just an example of why Misako should not ever babysit children (actually tbf she just takes Wu on her adventure, which is what the ninja have been doing). Maybe Misako said she was just going to take Wu to a jungle gym, but they misheard her and she actually said jungle with a guy named Jim. Fun.

And Seabound, Wu finally stays home and is looked after by Cole, Kai, Kai’s dad and Misako (their level of parenting from best to worst are in that order specifically).

And (CRYSTALISED PART 1 SPOILERS) Cole actually stays him so he specifically can look after Wu. Life is hard when you’re a single parent because the rest of your found family left. Actually Kai visits frequently bc he has maternal instincts (although being at the monastery is a little painful for him). Wu is sad because Zane no longer sings songs at him, Pixal almost never leaves the basement where she works on vehicles and stuff, and he misses Lloyd and Jay and Nya.

Fixing up elemental powers lore for Tommy the post

Notes: this is mostly headcanon/theory ((headtheory?)) and very little of It is based on canon. This is because the timeline is a mess and id much rather come up with something else. If you have any other points from canon you’d like to mention then I’d love to hear it. But I will be mainly ignoring anything that semi proves otherwise because again, timeline is a mess.

S15 spoilers ahead

So… s15 introduced a lot about elemental powers, most of which directly contradicts what has already been established. And because, like always, Tommy is no help. I wanted to try to see if I can come up with something on my own to fix this confusing puzzle together.

The first spinjitzu master didn’t create the elemental powers

Im not quite sure why tommy is still so admit on trying to say this is the case when s15 directly disproves this.

The existence of a water elemental master BEFORE the fsm ever appeared in ninjago straight up tells us he wasn’t the one who actually made the elemental powers, and implied he wasn’t the one who gave it to the masters either.

Hell, if anything, it would make more sense if the fsm mastered all the elements by training under elemental masters. It would explain why he never mastered water and supposedly air if they were never involved with him to begin with.

It would make sense for the fsm to be able to learn how to master these without having his own element. He’s half dragon and half oni which relay on creation and destruction ((which I also don’t think are elements but I’ll get to that)). So he could easily learn to use elements with his dragon powers.

Another bit of evidence to prove the fsm didn’t give the elemental powers to people is because if he did then why did he need the golden weapons? If he had the elements he could just make ninjago without the weapons anyways.

So then where did the elements come from?

While there is no real answer to that because, well duh, we can atleast attest that elemental masters aren’t JUST a ninjago thing.

For one, not many people know this but ninjago isn’t the whole realm, it’s a single continent and there are more continents in the realm. Paleman and tox are from another series called ultra agents, which sure as hell doesnt take place in ninjago.

And second, the elemental dragons in the first realm seem to have elemental powers aswell, hell it’s been implied that they might actually have stronger powers then the normal elemental masters

So then where did they come from? Well there are some possibilities

1. The dragon themselves, they can travel through realms and also they could create humans ((I mean look at fsm)) it’s also implied any large reptile creature can realm travel because of wojira being mentioned in the never realm

2. The realm spirits or whatever the fuck the preeminent is

3. The elements are there own beings that can affect who has elemental powers

Elementals could exist ((I know this is headcanon territory but shut up and let me have this))

Do you guys remember those little animal badges

These things

They were on the ninja gi’s up until s8 where they just disappeared

They seem directly tied to the ninja themselves, because Kai has his lion badge even when he was a kid.

And in s2 you can see them in the pillars for the elemental blades

Is almost like those symbols are meant to be direct representations of the elemental power

I’d also like to point out the golden weapons, they aren’t able to use specific elements ((like fire)) UNLESS its in there actual weapon form

And yet when Kai recreates them in s10, they still work even though there not exact replications

What if the specific elemental powers come from the dragon symbols? The golden weapons can’t use the element unless the dragon symbol is there to access that power. And because dragon elemental powers are more powerfully the symbols only work on the golden material.

What if the animal symbols work the same? And that people are Able to create spells, weapons, and such that use those powers.

As for where the elementals would live, well…

Elements were formed from space, it would make sense if they lived in space and were using there powers to create realms and give other people a bit of there power

And also I just think it would be cool if the sun was a being that’s the center of the realms, much like how the sun is the center of our solar system

I don’t think wu, garm, and Lloyd have elemental powers Im sorry

there’s little actual evidence to prove that garm, wu, and Lloyd have elemental powers

They don’t appear on any elemental power lists

Chen didn’t need garm or wus powers to finish his spell even though water and wind are the only ones the fsm didn’t master

Lloyd’s power itself is super confusing because it’s never named outside of “green” but s15 saying that the fsm only mastered them could mean that he just passed down mastering the powers to Lloyd.. somehow?

If anything it’s more likely that there got there destruction and creation powers bc of the combination of oni and dragon blood, nothing elemental

And at this point if Lloyd does have a elemental power tommy needs to stop being a coward and actually say it

Summary

So my new sexy and powerful lore for ninjago elemental powers is that

A bunch of elemental beings came into existence when space was created ((by like idk a Big Bang or something)), they created the 16 realms and gave each of them there own set of elemental masters, the older realm elemental masters are the strongest while the newer ones are the weakest because of the elementals slowly giving away there power. They gave the elemental masters there powers so they can project/create there realm more then the elementals have already done.
