#no 6 year hrt waiting lists no 3 years between appointments

so I am a transman myself but in germany. I am writing a trans guy probably in england. Can you/your followers help me find like a typical "timeline" of transitioning and the costs connected to it? Like in Germany most things are payed by insurances but you have to do 6 month of "Alltagstest" till HRT and have to go to a therapist for this long, need two expensive evaluations for getting a name change etc...

Being a trans guy currently transitioning in England via the NHS (National Health Service) I have bad news for your character: it’s going to be a long long wait, but at least it’s free!

It’ll take them a little over 2 years to get into an appointment at a GIC (Gender Identity Clinic), the long wait is due to the fact that we have 7 GICs for 4 countries (only one of which will deal with those younger than 16). During this wait it’s recommended that they be “living as a [insert gender]” (no really, that’s what they say) during that time, other wise they’ll have 2 more years after the appointment before they’ll start thinking about letting them start hormones.

So 2 years + GP waiting time (1 week to 4 months, depends where you live) and possibly a “Gender Assessment” with some retired Dr who doesn’t listen and constantly misgenders you (3-6 months for an appointment).

Two doctors at said GIC will have to give them the go ahead to medically transition. Then, assuming they give the go a head, they’ll have to wait another six months to start on hormones just to make sure they’re sure and this is what they want (I don’t know why the 2 years wasn’t indication enough). Some people also have to be on blockers for a year before starting HRT, so you can add that on.

3 years now (6 months between appoints plus the additional 6 month wait) + the blockers year if needed.

After about a year on hormones and they’ll get to go on a waiting list for top surgery (if the doctors agree), which is about five years long. There are 6 surgeries in total for transmen and 7 for transwomen, if they want them. And they’ll have to wait between surgeries to recover.

So about 8/9 years, but it’s free!

As for name changes, they can technically be done for free without the need for lawyers and such. However, some places require they enrol their new name with the courts, which costs £36.

It is possible to transition privately, but I don’t want to know how much quicker thing’s would go if I had the money so I will not be looking that up for you, sorry about that.
