Black rhinoceroses Diceros bicornis lack one or both ear pinnae with some regularity throughout their range. Predation by spotted hyenas Crocuta crocuta - especially while the rhinos are young - is responsible for many cases, though the condition appears to be congenital in some cases, with calves born earless. The far greater abundance in black rhinos than in white rhinos Ceratotherium simum of missing or mutilated ears due to hyena predation may be because of the different ways they flee danger: white rhino calves run ahead of their mothers who usually stay in close or even constant contact, while black rhino calves run behind their mothers who are often at a somewhat greater distance. Black rhino mothers still, however, turn back to defend their calves when they cry out in distress, perhaps resulting in survivors with damaged or missing ears, as spotted hyenas often grab onto rhino calves by an ear to subdue them.
