Ghost Cat Anzu Teaser Trailer

After being abandoned by her father, Karin is sent to live with her granddad in a temple in the country. She meets Anzu, a phantom feline who acts as a guardian. "Distrustful of her new guardian, Karin sabotages Anzu’s odd jobs for the townsfolk and befriends the eccentric local forest spirits. In an effort to win Karin over, Anzu accidentally makes a deal with the devil, and all Hell breaks loose." (GKids Films)

Adapted from the manga by Takashi Imashiro, Ghost Cat Anzu is directed by Yoko Kuno and Nobuhiro Yamashita. Yamashita filmed live actors, which was then rotoscoped into animation overseen by Kuno. The animated film brings together Shin-Ei Animation and Miyu Productions. Mirai Moriyama stars as Anzu and Noa Goto stars as Karin.

Ghost Cat Anzu releases to North America theaters on November 15, 2024.

Patlabor is On Lock

12 Days of Aniblogging 2023, Day 3

While Gundam is the most recognizable mecha anime I got into this year, most of my time was really spent working my way through the Patlabor franchise, and it’s quickly become one of my favorites. I’ve always loved the quiet moments in mecha shows, which makes sense considering I started with Macross and live for the bridge bunny gossip and off-duty downtown hangouts. Patlabor is built with this downtime at its core, operating with more of a slice of life mentality than anything else.

A lovable cast is crucial for making this work. Thankfully, Noa Izumi is a wonderful and unique protagonist, a scrappy soft butch who’s in it for the eroticism of the machine. The first Patlabor opening is a love letter from Noa to her mecha, and I get it! The AV-98 Ingram is an iconic design, with its asymmetric bunny ear antennae and shoulder lights and comically oversized revolver that requires the right hand to pop out in order to draw, exposing the arm wiring in the process. This is a show clearly written by first-generation mecha otaku, and plenty of time is dedicated to showing how the Labors have to be transported and recharged, how the movement software depends on reinforcement learning, showing off corporate model revisions, and of course repairs in the hangar.

Going back to the human characters, Noa’s work partner Asuma is clearly the more passive one within their dynamic, and it’s sweet to see that played out sincerely. And then there’s Kanuka Clancy, the stern weirdo badass from New York who’s constantly swearing and dropping one-liners in English. She’s the obvious breakthrough character of the show, and also the perfect opposites-attract pairing for Noa if you’re the kind of person whose yuri meter went off the charts during their drinking contest episode. Most of Patlabor’s cast seem fairly one-note at first, and one of the great tricks of the show is giving them just a little bit more depth than you would expect. Pretty much everyone, even the most jokey characters, eventually get a standalone episode or two that further sketches them out and offers real interiority. Captain Goto is another fan-favorite, and it’s definitely his mixture of laziness and wicked perceptiveness that does it, plus his main character billing in the movies.

SV2 may be a law enforcement unit, but this really isn’t a police procedural at the end of the day. These guys are the bum department out in the sticks who everyone hates, and the upside of that is that SV2 gets stuck with the oddest of jobs instead of cop work. Sometimes that’s dealing with a runaway military prototype, other times it’s arguing with the insurance company. The best kind of episodes are the ones that take almost entirely on base as everyone tries to solve a problem of their own making, like an Ingram falling into the sea or the mechanics getting into a fight with the only restaurant that delivers to them.

A main plot does eventually emerge, with a shadowy company developing a mysterious jet-black Labor piloted by a child who is the girlish boy to Noa Izumi’s boyish girl. The Griffon is sleek and curvy and has superiority in the water and air – it’s a machine designed to defeat Ingrams, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Yoji Shinkawa looked here when designing Metal Gear RAY. Automation is a fundamental ideological enemy of mecha – faceless mass production and artificial intelligence mean an end to the era of personal combat. Even Patlabor, a warless series, dips its toes into this idea in the later episodes, with Noa and the mechanics alike worrying that the neural networks in their new Labor models will make them redundant.

Overall, this show is hilarious and sweet and clearly loved by an older generation of otaku. So why didn’t I hear about it earlier? Partly it’s on me for not hanging out with the right mecha fans online for a while. But if I had to guess, it’s also because Patlabor is one of those works that’s straightforwardly, unobjectionably good in a way where it already says everything there is to be said about it. You can have near-infinite arguments about Zeon ideology or mobile suit powerscaling online, but there’s only so many times you can say “yeah, Noa Izumi, love that girl” precisely because everyone agrees. It can also be hard to pitch things by their vibes in a genre known for adrenaline and intrigue. Patlabor’s vibes, for the record, are immaculate.

Mecha’s also a bit looked down upon from the outside. Anything that makes it into the larger conversation has to be understood as “elevated” or a “genre deconstruction”, even if the very first Mobile Suit Gundam is already about Amuro’s trauma and PTSD from being made into a child soldier. This elevation is actually happening to the second Patlabor movie as we speak - it’s becoming increasingly discussed as a major component of Mamoru Oshii’s filmography, divorced from its source series and instead compared to his subsequent Ghost in the Shell movie. Funnily enough, Oshii’s contributions to the Patlabor TV show are actually the more lighthearted gag episodes.

A lot of recent Patlabor retrospectives have drawn attention to the artist’s collective Headgear, established and owned by the series creators so they would be able to retain the rights for the franchise. This structure is fairly unique for the anime industry and probably only makes sense for established creatives, but it does seem to have worked out great for them, providing financial stability and strong creative control over the franchise. This allowed Patlabor to thrive in the relative wasteland of late 80s TV anime, a time when even Gundam had fled to the OVA market.

That being said, it does take Patlabor switching back to OVAs to truly spread its wings. The New Files are a conclusion and continuation of the TV series that are willing to move at their own pace, resulting in some dramatic and surprisingly thoughtful stories. It’s genuinely touching to watch Goto and Nagumo try and fail to communicate their feelings for one another in a very restrained episode as thick with long-stewing emotions as it is empty space. Of course, the very next episode has half the cast get stuck in the sewer labyrinth underneath their base and there’s a bunch of Wizardry references. Oh, Oshii.

The Patlabor movies fully lean into this melancholy and uncertainty, and it’s a welcome evolution for the series. The first movie still ends with an all-out action set piece in a half-built mecha factory that stands in for the Tower of Babel, but the second one stays serious the whole time through, going as far as pivoting to a more realistic artsyle. It’s a challenging film. The politics are all-encompassing but fairly straightforward, as Oshii effectively infodumps a presentation on the postwar history of the JSDF throughout. Instead, what the makes the movie so difficult is its willingness to face the end of an era – the Cold War is over, the bubble economy has popped, and the former members of SV2 have all gone their separate ways. The conditions that have created Patlabor, both internal and external to the show, have dissipated. And the movie makes it clear by having the military stage a raid on SV2’s headquarters, tearing their Labors to shreds with gunfire in a beautifully animated act of desecration.

After watching her be a lovable mecha dweeb for 50 episodes, it hurts a bit to hear Noa Izumi say that she doesn’t want to be that girl obsessed with robots for the rest of her life! These characters are growing in such a way that will remove them from the focus of the narrative, and it’s a movie about letting go just as much as it is about looking towards an uncertain personal and national future. I love Miyazaki’s Porco Rosso, but the fact that Oshii put this out just one year later paints a delicious contrast between the two directors with regards to escapism versus reality with regards to militarism. There's some great interviews from the era where they're just taking potshots at each other about all this.

Patlabor Final Thoughts + My Watch Guide

So the original salespitch of Patlabor was that you could make this generic Police Procedural / Workplace Comedy / Mecha Action / Near-future Political Thriller / Romantic Comedy setting that you could plop any ol' script into and it would work. And to that end, it kind of works. It makes at least one each of those plots work across its entire runtime.

The main issue with it though, is that declaring "I want to make a police workplace comedy" seems to melt writers' brains and they start producing complete slop.

Patlabor TV is weird because writers and directors I know can write good material, just stop being able to do it. It's a slog to make it through. And, Patlabor: The New Files is a pretty transparent continuation of the TV show as if it was still broadcasting. It looks a little nicer and it can discuss TV-unfriendly topics, but it uses that successfully like twice. Spoilers after the cut.

Really, I think Patlabor is at its best when it focuses on character writing. When we're examining Noa's otakuness and how it has messed up her ability to live a healthy, happy life; when we're dealing with Kanuka's tryhard-hardass coping mechanism for racism, when we're exploring how Goto navigates interpersonal conflicts with a frankly Daoist Sage levels of wuwei, that's when Patlabor is best. This is part of why I think Patlabor's Movie timeline shines so much. Patlabor is at its absolute lowest when it's shooting for a barebones workplace comedy with the broadest characters imaginable. I cannot tell you how many times I grumbled at my TV because such-and-such was acting totally out of character because that's how the stock character would behave in a situation. It's exhausting, frankly, and it really drained any interest I had in the TV timeline by episode 25 or so.

And while I'm bitching about Patlabor TV, let's talk about the plot. Patlabor TV's overarching story is about how the SCHAFT mercenary company is trying to steal the Ingrams' data disc and develop the Griffon labor, and some mysterious plot going on with the Babylon building project being terrorized by the Home of the Sea organization.

I hope that didn't interest you at all because Patlabor never really resolves that plotline. It abruptly halts in episode 35, only to resume in New Files. And even then, New Files stops talking about it after episode 7. You get a "soft" finale to it when the pilot of the Griffon finally gets got, that's it. Anyway, here's my personal watch guide. Note that this isn't a "these are filler" list, this is "the episodes I actually liked" list. TV watchers should be aware that I didn't include the main Schaft plotline because, it's boring and also they never really conclude it anyway.

i think it was a really insane choice for patlabor 2 to focus entirely on the sociopolitical state of japan in post world war 2 and make it a point to devalue labors entirely to the point where they really only show up in one scene at the end, as well as focusing the entire plot on goto and nagumo whereas noa and the others get maybe 10 minutes of screen time max.

it worked though so i guess it was a bold choice instead of an insane choice but it was unorthodox to say the least.

Ghost Cat Anzu First Look Teaser

Karin, a strong minded 11-year old, is sent to live with her granddad, a monk living in the Japanese countryside. She meets Anzu, a phantom feline who acts as a guardian.

Adapted from the manga by Takashi Imashiro, Ghost Cat Anzu is directed by Yoko Kuno and Nobuhiro Yamashita. Yamashita filmed live actors, which was then rotoscoped into animation overseen by Kuno. The animated film brings together Shin-Ei Animation and Miyu Productions. Mirai Moriyama stars as Anzu and Noa Goto stars as Karin.

Ghost Cat Anzu will release in North America in 2024.

Tsugaru's Jealousy over Noa

In case you read Tsugaru’s POV’s you know just how much of a jealous raging beast Tsugaru is. He’s even raging in bigger fonts mentally xD Usually Goto or the other instructors are victim to the green beast of his, but have you considered that he might be jealous over Noa as well?

Noa is the child that he takes care of together with MC. The one thing that connects both of them on a deeper level, is that they both strive to have a family of their own. Noa wishes to have parents since he never had them as a genetically engineered child. Tsugaru in comparison lost his family as a child, and while his deepest wish is to have family, it’s also his greatest fear. He wouldn’t be able to cope with losing them again.

Set side by side, Noa knows exactly what he wants and takes the initiative to get it. He reaches out to the persons he wants in his life with childish innocence... and ends up charming the persons Tsugaru is close to.

Momo

Tsugaru is rather proud of the loyal dog that Momo is to him. So loyal that he barely talks to others and growls at anyone that gets in Tsugaru's way and is not up the tree in 3 seconds.

Even though Momo keeps his distance from everyone beside Tsugaru, Noa manages to get close to him during their first encounters. He even gets to ride on his shoulders and gets away with giving Momo nicknames.

Speaking of Momo, Tsugarus gang is also quite fond of Noa, offering him sweets and vegetables - like he was already Tsugarus real child. Sometimes even taking Noas side over Tsugarus.

MC

Though MC rescued Noa from the laboratory, it's actually Noa that decided to follow her. He even demands for her to interrogate him and is quite open about what he wants her to be for him. He boldly calls her "Big Sister" or even "Mum". Noa holds her hand and even invites her to the kindergarten. Compared to that Tsugaru struggles to take the initiative and uses rather ambiguous means to show his feelings. In fact, he has yet to find a title for what he wants her to be in his life.

Shirogane

Shirogane, the Public Safetys Department chief, is the most important person in Tsugaru's life. There is noone he respects more, as Shirogane reached out his hand towards him in the past and adopted him. Tsugaru devoted his life to help Shirogane reaching his goals and would even give his life for him, if he had to. He wants Shirogane to be proud and wishes to be a family... yet it's been 20 years and he still struggles to call him dad. He has too much respect for the man.

Guess who's been able to adress Shirogane in a familial fashion? RIGHT, NOA. Noa has the balls to call Shirogane his grandpa. Shirogane - the scary department chief, everyone cowers in front of. Just because Tsugaru is Noas father figure and further Tsugaru's dad is naturally his gramps. It's even funnier that Shirogane doesn't even really object.

As shown in MS3's good ending, he is even looking forward to meet Noa again and Tsugaru comments, that he probably even likes being called Grandpa. Yet Tsugaru still cannot call him dad.

Haaaah this family. This gets even more apparent in Tsugaru's S4. Shirogane and Tsugaru never talk heart-to-heart, even though they really care for another. Tsugaru already has family, he just has yet to realize it.

Noa builds bridges

Tsugaru feels very relieved that Noa is able to acommodate to a normal life, even with his unnatural origins. Compared to Noa, he struggled much more to get used to the new lifestyle. After the incident, "normal" never existed for him ever again. While he feels relieved, that he finds friends and builds his own family, he cannot help but feel inferior too when he thinks of his own childhood.

Tsugaru never really initiated contacts or put effort into them. He just let others be close to him. So he also struggles to see how others feel for him, if they don't talk about it openly. Momo is probably the only one, that openly shows his affection towards Tsugaru. He tells him he's important, compliments him and makes sure to show how loyal he is at any chance he gets.

By Noa wriggling his way into Tsugarus life, he gets closer to MC and experiences the normalcy he has been searching for, but that seems out if reach. His deepest wish to have a family resurfaces from the depths.

By seeing Noa mingling with Shirogane, Tsugaru also notices more sides of the man, he wasn't aware of. Even the wishes Shirogane has for him. Tsugaru would never have known, that Shirogane wishes for him to have a family, if Noa wouldn't have nagged Tsugaru in front of him.

Even though Tsugaru envies Noa for his bold initiative, it also helps him heal.

Slowly, but surely this unnatural family constellation gets more honest and they grow closer and closer. It's a very beautiful depiction of family and I'm looking forward to see more of... "The Tsugarus"

Style Q&As from the old SkinsLife website

Hi guys! In my search to find the striped hoodie Cassie wears at the end of her series 1 episode, I found the old SkinsLife website, where Edward Gibbon (the costume designer) did his Q&As before they moved over to the e4 website.  Unfortunately, not all of it has been archived, but there’s a lot of good stuff about where the series 2 costumes come from, and a ton of questions about Cassie’s clothes.

Here’s what I could find.  I’ll put all of the Cassie questions at the top and then all of the other ones under a cut:

Edward: Cassie's skirt is from a small Japanese designer in Camden (and well spotted Olivia xx the fabric is from Ikea.)

Edward: Cassie's sailor top was from New York, but you can always try an Army Surplus store or maybe Camden if you're anywhere near London. Let me know how you get on!

Edward: Cassies clothes are from all over the place ! Her style is a mixture of amazing vintage pieces, charity shop finds, vintage designer stuff and high street sale stuff (normally the things no one else wants ! ) The top you are talking about was a vintage nylon 'teddy'(an all in one , shorts and top underwear item ). This year she has been wearing a lot of underwear as outerwear so keep your eyes peeled in charity shops and don't be afraid to rummage through dead peoples' clothes! ------------------------------------------------

My question is regarding the reaons behind Cassie's rapid change in clothing style in episode 9 when she arrives in NYC. At first I simply assumed it was to make her seem more vagrant looking, as though she was wearing simply what she grabbed in the dash. But then in the last scene of the episode, she is running down the street and is in another compltely out of character outfit, and wondered that would she really have all these clothes that she just never wears? Was there any specific reason as to this change? Thanks!

Edward: By the time we see Cassie in NYC she has been on the road for a while and grabbed clothes wherever she finds them , if they don't seem quite like what she normally wears that's because of what she has been through and the clothes she goes running in are Adams - see clothes tell a story as well ! ------------------------------------------------ asdfghjklxx: hii i was just wondering if you could tell me where cassies boots and jeans were from that she was wearing in the last episode when she arrives in new york, also where is the red and white candy striped skirt that she wears with the bow tshirt in her exam from? thanksss xxx

Edward: Cassie's jacket was a vintage American College jacket - which was worn by Chris in the last series on the school trip to Russia, adding a nice bit of continuity ! ------------------------------------------------

Pascha Rix: I really loved the gorgeous white shorts that Michele was wearing once in a club scene when she was dancing up against two other guys. The shorts were tiny, white and with pink sequins on them and they were absolutely gorgeous! Where do you also tend to look for other clothes she wears? Are there particular shops you goto?

Edward: The skirt's from Top shop but you can make your own if you like: hack off a pair of old jeans as high as you dare and then cover randomly with sequins...

Edward: Pretty much everything they wear is chosen by me - especially their pants and socks; they play an important part in defining their characters.....

I like Maxxie's style, but I still don't know what should I pick. The clothes I mostly wear are from American Eagle (ae.com), no ripped jeans though. I don't think ripped jeans look nice. I also don't wear baggy jeans. I'm 6'2" and kind of skinny (pant size: 30x34 or 31x34). My shoe size is 12.5. So I'm big, skinny guy with big feet. I have no sense in how a shoe should match. I was just wondering if you could tell me what would look best on my feet from a brand like Nike, Puma, or one I could easily get in Chicago area. Btw. love watching Skins :-) Thanks.

Edward: the best look for fairly big feet is the plainest styles of trainers - good old Converse are a safe choice, mess it up with some of the great colours they do . Old school trainers like Nike Tennis shoes or their retro Waffle style / addidas gazelle or stan Smiths . Swear is a British label that does great very flat plain trainers with a twist - they have a brilliant new collection in collaboration with Hummel . Edward: Michelle's silver vest was from Kate Moss for Top Shop - her vests are from all over , American Apparel is great for brilliant coloured basics made in ethical factories ( much better for your conscience and the world than Primark !)

moppet: Hey Edward, I just want to say I think the overall look of the characters in the show is amazing so whatever you are doing with the wardrobe you are doing it extremely well! I hate to be the 1,000,000,000th person to ask you this but...in Michelle's episode (Series 2, Episode 4) she wears a pair of skirt dungarees or a skirt with braces made of denimn. I would love it if you could tell me where you found it? Or where I could find a similar item? I know several people have already asked you on this about it. Edward: Really sorry but can't actually remember what label Michelle's dungaree skirt was - it was a TKMaxx find - but try Lees new stuff designed by Jane Birkin for something silmilair ------------------------------------------------ HarrietBABESS: Hi, i was wondering if you could please tell me where michelle's necklace is from in her lost weeks diary, the black bow one, and effy's dress she wears to the club in series 2 episode 7? Edward: Michelles necklace was from Warehouse and Effy's dress was created from a vintage beaded dress , customised over another dress from Oasis - so sharpen those scissors and start creating ! ------------------------------------------------ geodude: hi i was just wondering if you could tell me wer you get the majority of chris' vest tops from i just think there so good that i have to have one especially this one!! thanks XD

Edward: Maxxies' rowing blazer was hired from a Bristol Costume Shop and is probably about 100 years old - still looks good doesn't it , just goes to show great style never goes out of fashion . ------------------------------------------------

snoogins: This may sound like a stupid question, but i thought you should be the one to ask. I have a big problem buying trousers for myself. I dunno if it's just my frame (I'm 6 foot and pretty thin). But anything outside of blue jeans look awkward on me. I was wondering if you had any tips when look for mens trousers. Oh and everyone always asks where certain characters shop. I was wanting to know whats your own favourite brands of clothing?

Edward: Hi snoogins. Blue jeans are a pretty good basic for any look - take advantage of your height by maybe wearing trousers a bit shorter than you normally would - Farah have a great range of trousers that suit all shapes, so check them out. My favourite labels are Margaret Howell, Vivienne Westwood, Thom Browne and thanks for asking... ------------------------------------------------
