2nd Year Project: Pleasure and Pain
We went to the V&A Museum in London to see the Pleasure and Pain footwear display they had out to give us inspiration for our brief. I was inspired by the 2 getas out on display; to which i went on to look at kimonos and cherry blossoms.
I found this beautiful, black embossed leather that had a pearlescent and hand sewed all these flowers sequins to it. The leather comes down over the wooden platform. Hand painted the sole black with a red iridescent paint which matched up nicely to the flowers.
I was really proud of this design as it was pretty difficult to make; it was like a jigsaw puzzle but i managed to solve it along the way!

Do you guys have any advice on how to treat anxiety? I'm an anxious person and my thoughts are killing me. I'm always checking my phone to see if anyone texts me because I'm lonely and I also check on any social media for the same but when I find nothing I feel these wave of depression take over me and I'm tired of feeling like this. I also feel bad because I've been single for more than 7 months and I'm starting to feel like no one will ever love me. Thank you for your time. ♡
Hi love,
Thank you for contacting Asking Jude. I’m sorry to hear that you’re dealing with anxiety. I know precisely how difficult anxiety can be because I struggle with it myself. There are two different types of treatment for anxiety: professional help and self-help. Professional help consists of therapy and/or medication. Self-help usually consists of different coping mechanisms.
Here are my recommendations on how to cope with anxiety:
- Breathing is one of the best ways to calm anxiety. When you’re anxious, your body activates the “sympathetic nervous system,” which is like the body’s gas pedal. Breathing helps activate the “parasympathetic nervous system,” which is the body’s brake pedal. There are a lot of different breathing techniques out there that help reduce anxiety, but I like a technique called box breathing. Here is how to do box breathing: https://www.healthline.com/health/box-breathing.
- Grounding is another way that you can activate your “parasympathetic nervous system” when you’re anxious. When you feel your anxiety starting to creep up, you use a grounding technique to bring down your anxiety. I recommend the 5-4-3-2-1 method. However, there are many different ones out there that you can use. Here is how to use the 5-4-3-2-1 method: https://www.urmc.rochester.edu/behavioral-health-partners/bhp-blog/april-2018/5-4-3-2-1-coping-technique-for-anxiety.aspx.
- Mindful Meditation is another excellent way to manage anxiety. Meditation doesn’t help reduce anxiety when you’re having an attack, but it is useful in reducing anxiety overall. I recommend that you use a meditation app like Calm or Headspace. If you don’t want to use an app, YouTube has dozens of mindful meditation-videos, and you have the option to use Dartmouth’s mediation downloads at https://students.dartmouth.edu/wellness-center/wellness-mindfulness/relaxation-downloads.
- Adult Coloring is another form of Meditation that you can do. You don’t have to buy expensive coloring books, markers or colored pencils to do this.
- ASMR has been shown to help people with depression, insomnia, and anxiety. There are many ASMR videos out there, but I recommend Asking Jude’s ASMR channel called Noctiflora, which you can view at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCW-frOIU0fLnTSxOxKnBT8Q.
- Here are two links to more coping skills: https://adaa.org/tips and https://www.yourlifeyourvoice.org/pages/tip-99-coping-skills.aspx.
- Self Help Books and Worksheets: www.healthline.com/health/anxiety/best-anxiety-books#4, https://positivepsychology.com/anxiety-worksheets/, and https://www.hpft.nhs.uk/media/1184/cbt-workshop-booklet_web.pdf.
Repeatedly checking social media and text messages isn’t very good for your mental health. It’s already making you feel depressed. If you’re lonely, you can try reaching out to your friends instead of waiting for them to do that. If you’re friends don’t text you first or reach out to you, that doesn’t mean they don’t care about you. You have to remember that they’re their own person and have things going on in their life. It’s okay to reach out to them first. It would be best if you tried to stop checking your phone constantly. Here are some articles on how to stop doing that
- https://medium.com/an-idea-for-you/how-i-stopped-checking-my-phone-and-started-using-it-with-intention-ec2f38c0b536.

Being single for more than seven months doesn’t mean you’ll never be loved. Based on what you’ve written, it seems that maybe you like to be in relationships because you don’t want to be alone. I think that being single for a while will be good for you. There’s no rush to find the one. You’ll find that person when the time is right. I promise you, you’re loved, and you will find love.
If you feel that your anxiety is getting worse and you’re having trouble coping on your own, I suggest that you seek out treatment from a mental health professional. If you’re 18 or older, you can use https://www.opencounseling.com/ or https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/therapists to find a therapist near you. In addition, you can check with your insurance company to see which therapist and/or psychiatrist takes your insurance. If you’re under the age of 18, please speak to your parent(s) or guardian(s) about getting treatment. If it’s easier to talk with your doctor about getting treatment, please do so. If you’re not financially able to afford therapy, here are two websites on how to get affordable treatment: https://www.moneyunder30.com/affordable-therapy and https://themighty.com/2017/08/affordable-online-therapy-cheap/.
I recommend that you utilize helplines for extra support during this time as well. Hotlines are designed to give the patrons support and guidance 24/7. The best part is that they are free and confidential. Here are my suggestions:
- Crisis Text Line: Text “HOME” to 741741 to talk with a crisis counselor.
- 7 Cups of Tea: Visit www.7cups.com or download their app from the IOS or Google Play store to get started. Once you’ve made your account, you can begin chatting with a trained volunteer and/or attend group sessions.
- The Mighty is an online magazine and community for those with disabilities and mental illness, as well as caregivers. Visit www.themighty.com or download their app from the Google Play or IOS store to create an account. Once you’ve made the account, you can post thoughts or questions to The MIghty to community and receive the support that way.
- Contact Helpline gives their patrons advice and support. Visit http://www.contacthelpline.org/ for more information on their line. You can call 800-932-4616 to speak with a counselor.
- NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) offers a support line that runs Monday through Friday, 10 am–6 pm eastern standard time. You can call them at 1-800-950-NAMI (6264) or email them at
[email protected].
- Suicide Prevention Lifeline: If you ever feel like you’re in danger of hurting yourself or in a severe mental crisis, please call 1-800-273-8255 to connect with a crisis counselor. If you prefer chatting online, visit https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/ to access their online chat.
I hope that I was able to give you some guidance on your anxiety and other issues. I wish you all the best in your recovery. Remember, you are stronger than you think. Please check out Asking Jude’s YouTube channel for helpful videos at www.youtube.com/c/AskingJude. If you need any more support with this or anything else, please don’t hesitate to come back to us. We’re here to help you no matter what.
Love,
Meggan
