Crimson-speckled moth Utetheisa pulchella

This moth is found in dry, open spaces across Europe, North Africa, the Near East and Central Asia. Other common names are the “crimson-speckled flunkey” and “crimson-speckled footman.”

Margarete Zink, Kunsthistorikerin  über die Ausstellung Noctuoidea:

„Amrei Wittwer agiert als Animatorin des Objekts. Auf der Leinwand (wie im Film!) entsteht auf diese Weise die „Projektion“ eines in seiner „animistischen“ Wesenhaftigkeit aufgefassten Abbildes der Natur. Die Künstlerin malt jede einzelne Schuppe, jede Pigmentabstufung und jeden Millimeter in einem langwierigen Prozess auf die Leinwand. So wie die Malerin selbst, so sind im Maßstabsvergleich zum vergrößerten Nachtfalter auch die „Betrachtenden und Wissenden“ verkleinert. Spätestens in diesem Moment wird die Verwandlung (und Gleichstellung?) im Werk von Amrei Wittwer überdeutlich: Dieser Nachtfalter ist ein Subjekt, kein Objekt in den Händen der Wissenschaft, wie im Museum.

Noctuoidea (Nachtfalter) wird bei Amrei Wittwer zu einem Wesen, das in der Kunst sein Refugium, einen Zufluchtsort, finden soll. Stellvertretend symbolisiert der Nachtfalter die Unterwerfung der Natur durch die Kultur, wird aber zugleich von der Künstlerin mit einer neuen Macht ausgestattet, einer Art Magie. Der/die Betrachter/in wird auf sich zurückgeworfen und sich seiner selbst bewusst beim Betrachten (und Beachten) des Naturwesens, als Sinnbild eines psychischen Entwicklungszustands, bei dem Innen- und Außenwelt ineinander verschmelzen. In ihrer Kunst verbindet Amrei Wittwer auf diese Weise den wissenschaftlich-forschenden Blick auf die Natur, der seit Descartes von einer kategorischen Subjekt-Objekt-Trennung ausging, mit dem radikalsten Gegenbild zu dieser Sicht auf die Welt, dem Animismus.“  (Auszug)

Found in the United States and southern Canada, this moth was first named by James Edward Smith in 1797. The isabella tiger moth is a cold loving moth, which can even be in the arctic!

These moths live 7-10 days as adults, ideally. These moths are in the Arctiidae class of moths.

These moths bare orange wings and are typically 22-26 mm in length. Just look at this friendly little guy!

Garden tiger moth Artcia caja

Caterpillars of the garden tiger moth are known as “wooly bear caterpillars” though they are different from another caterpillar species that are black with a single orange band, which is the Isabella tiger moth caterpillar.
