for the book ask: 3, 12, and 25!
3: Wow whee, tough one! In no particular order, and not limited to books that came out in 2024 because I couldn’t quite squeeze out a top 5 from those:
Shakespeare: The Man who Pays the Rent (Judi Dench)—I’ve been proselytizing this book to anybody who might care even a little. She goes through every role in every play she’s done and unpacks it scene by scene. Really awesome to see deep analysis from the actor’s perspective. Her theater memories are cool too.
He Who Drowned the World (Shelley Parker-Chan)—I can’t say, honestly and unqualifiedly, that I enjoyed these two books. I can say they made my brain go brr to bursting and I rang in 2024 by crying at the end of this one.
Invisible Man (Ralph Ellison)—I read this once before in high school and remembered virtually nothing about it except that I loved it. I can now see why I vibed so hard at age 17. He says in his introduction (written decades later) that he was aiming to reveal the human universals within the specific experience of being a Black man in America, and boy did he succeed. Can confirm it resonates a lot with being neurodivergent in particular, since the invisible man spends so much time in social and sensory hell. Rather male but so it goes. Took me a while to get through it; glad I made the push.
Some Desperate Glory (Emily Tesh)—super propulsive and exciting; big ambitions that I think it met pretty well. I have more detailed thoughts, but I know you haven’t read it yet, so I can save them for when/if you do!
Greta and Valdin (Rebecca K. Reilly)—more on it in @/kallistoi’s ask
12: Answered in @/literarymagpie’s ask
25: I think the first thing I want to do is reread The Jasmine Throne (Tasha Suri) to remember the details and then move on to the rest of the trilogy (third just came out). I’d love to chip at more Shakespeare plays I don’t know, too. After that, we’ll see! For some reason, a switch just flipped at the start of the year and I was able to read a LOT more than I have in the past several years. My goal is really just to keep it up.

Rules: answer and tag people you want to get to know better and/or catch up with! tagged by @nonbinarybriarmoss , ty!
favorite color: Ever since I got really into painting I can't answer this question any more because every color is equally beautiful and just needs the right context. But I will say that russet brown is underappreciated.
last song: still listening to I'm Your Man on repeat and thinking about Armand. help.
last movie: I saw The Phantom Menace in theaters this month out of nostalgia, since it was one of the first films I ever saw on the big screen. Honestly, I think it's a little unfairly maligned as the worst Star Wars prequel movie; the bare bones of a good movie are there (which cannot be said of AotC), they're just crushed under the painfully bad script.
currently reading: technically still inching my way through the Realm of the Elderlings books but I returned Fool's Fate to the library after having it out for four months and not reading more than a couple chapters. I was also listening to The Mirage Factory: Illusion, Imagination, and the Invention of Los Angeles, but I ran out of time on that loan too. I am just too tired to read and it sucks.
currently watching: gay vampires babyyyyy!
currently craving: Indian food I will probably never eat again given my extreme alium and chickpea intolerance :((((
tea or coffee: I used to drink tea every day but I've been avoiding it this year due to my digestion issues. I only ever drink coffee when I need to achieve superhuman feats and am willing to get sent to the shadow realm five hours after drinking it.

ask meme time!
favourite fictional character archetype? if you could cook one (1) impressive meal for a guest what will be your go-to? favourite line from a book/show/movie?
wheezes <3
okay uhm as far as archetypes go i really enjoy the Caregiver type characters and how they can really take so many forms and roles in the story while still fulfilling that archetype. Outlaw is a favorite too but it has to be done well you know?
my go to dish to impress someone would be.... honestly i think my homemade gnocchi a la vodka with balsamic broccoli is the safest go to i have, but i also like doing steak with risotto blanco and mixed greens. im hoping to get comfy with a few of Tony Bourdain’s recipes too, to the point i’d be confident enough to make them as staples.
and my favorite line from a movie/show/book, and i am making a point not to use Black Sails because i would quote entire monologues at you if i did, is... god this is a hard one uhm...
im gonna be really corny at the moment and say Sam’s speech about there being good in the world worth fighting for, thats one i go back to a lot. i also really love Silver’s “I hope I’m there to catch a bit of the light coming off yer sails” from treasure planet. and of course everything ever said by black sails.

#in a better universe the pembrokeshire tv pilot would be the next goncharov (via @nonbinarybriarmoss)
what people who aren't haters fail to understand about my culture is that, yes, it is sometimes exhausting being critical of everything all the time, being unable to participate in silly turn-off-your-brain summer blockbuster fun, being a tiresome cunt at parties etc. however, this is counterbalanced by the fact that the 3-4 people on planet earth who truly understand your snarling trembling dripping purebred mongrel taste profile will recommend you things that blow your head off every single time. they'll be like "saw a tv pilot that was uncovered from a time capsule in pembrokeshire this weekend. it's an adaptation of the 1970s packaging for Zoom ice creams and a man died filming it. it's bad, you personally will love it, check it out 👍" and they're always right. you're texting them 24 hours later offering boons and oral sex bc the part where the ice cream butler travels to the moon and sees all the food colourings boil away into space as a metaphor for the decline of the nuclear age somewhat changed you as a person forever. meanwhile you go out in society and it's like no I didn't like glass onion. I don't want to talk about it, you'll divorce me.

🌹!
If he had to describe the feeling, he would say it is like trying to think of something, but not like trying to remember the past or a fact he knows. It’s like trying to remember the present.
#these are all gonna be from fic probably#because a lot of my original stuff is stuck in word hell#until I get my shit together and reinstall office#oh wait I should uhhh do that this afternoon#scribble games#(send me a rose and I’ll answer with a line from a current WIP)#thank you!!#nonbinarybriarmoss#scribble saga#tfw you forget one of your organizational tags and u just. gotta go back to add it.

@nonbinarybriarmoss replied to your post “I’ll never understand how Loghain got such a dedicated fanbase, he’s...”
there's.....a loghain fanbase...??
surprised but not surprised tbh
yup and idk what they’re up to nowadays but back in the day they could get rabid and were really vehement that liking Loghain was social justice praxis, lmao. And shipping him with their Wardens, which, more power to them, but it was crazy how they would call things he did in DAO that they didn’t like noncanon and ooc.
I guess it’s just fun to go against the narrative and root for the villain. But it’s pretty weird to then start hating on the rest of fandom who still think he’s a villain.
