I disagree with the idea that someone's a better Cass fan than people who want to see Cass as Batgirl again just cause they support her as Black Bat or Orphan. Saying that we don't care about Cass unless she's Batgirl is ignorant. DC doesn't care about Cass unless she's Batgirl.

Listen I am well aware that plenty of fans prefer Steph's run as Batgirl over Cass. I've read Steph's run because of that so when I talk about it I know what I'm talking about and have an actual opinion on it. However I find it hard to believe that Cass's time as Black Bat was a high point for the character and when I see someone trying to argue that point it's hard to take them seriously. DC did nothing with her in terms of actually development. She just showed up when she was allowed and they randomly gave her a new code name that for me at least fell flat. Could Black Bat have been a new era for Cass bringing her to a new sense of self after giving the Batgirl mantle to Stephanie? Yes. Was it? No. Gates of Gotham is the closest we ever got to true development for Cass during that era and they rebooted the universe quickly after that. Black Bat was the era when DC finally figured out a way to get rid of a character they didn't want anymore, but fans loved so they let her cameo in other people's stories but never going so far as allowing her to be the focus.

A similar thing is happening right now with Rebirth!Cass "Orphan". At this point in time she's basically the distant cousin of the batfam. Once she was the daughter of Bruce Wayne, now she's that girl they call when they need some extra muscle. Rebirth!Cass's development is slow, it's happening sure, but it's slow and painful. Mostly because DC won't let her exist outside of team books. We have barely gotten a glimpse into what her life is like outside of the batfam and then when she's around she's only ever in service of Batman or whoever the team leader is. Even in Tynion's Tec during the League of Shadows arc which was specifically for her, it was basically long version of Batgirl #25 (granted a lesser version) and she was still sidelined often in her own arc. It was more about Batman/Batwoman and the Colony trying to stop Shiva and the League of Shadows, even throwing in Ra's for a couple issues. All while in the background Cass has an existential crisis about Shiva being her mom. That's what it was. And then after that we got some decent Cass and Clayface stuff and then Cass discovering the old timeline when she was Batgirl and wore the symbol. Good stuff. Unfortunately it all went nowhere cause Tynion left. Now Hill is writing Rebirth!Cass and I'm excited about that. I hope he's able to give Cass the development she deserves, but it's STILL A TEAM BOOK! So he can only do so much. He even said he decided against doing a Cass focused arc first cause he was to scared he'd end up making it a solo Cass book. Team books are great, but when a character isn't getting focus anywhere else they can be a drag on the development of said character. I don't expect Hill to make Outsiders a Cass solo, nor would I want him to. I want him to write a team book. Unfortunately, much like Tynion's Tec that means we could go months with no real development for Rebirth!Cass.

Now I say all this to say. Of course most Cass fans want her to be Batgirl again. It was the high point for her as a character. It showed her developing constantly, gave her a supporting cast, gave her interesting stories that challenged her as a character with such a deep seeded moral compass, it let us as readers learn more about her with every issue and also made her part of the batfam in a way Black Bat never was and Rebirth!Cass could only dream. However as someone who is friends with a crap ton of Cass stans who love her more than me, we all continue to support her even now in Rebirth when she's going by possibly one of the most insulting names ever given to a character with her backstory. So yes, we want Cass to be Batgirl again, not because we don't love Cassandra Cain only when she's Batgirl, but because we want the company that uses her to love her too. And right now the only time we've seen them show that love is when she's Batgirl. Also Cass as Batgirl just works. She defines that role in a way Babs never could and Steph never had the opportunity to. If Rebirth!Cass were to take that mantle it would be more character development in a single issue than she's gotten in a very long time cause the implications of it. She's wearing the symbol again, her relationship with Babs would come back into play (seriously that's just gone now), her relationship with Batman comes back into play, her relationship with Gotham as a city comes back into play. It opens up a whole world of storytelling that isn't being explored right now. Now could all of these things still happen with her not going by Batgirl? Yes. However there's been no indication that it will. Now I'm cool with different things happening. I miss Cass and Babs or Cass and Steph, but I love Cass and Clayface and think Cass and Duke could be something special.

So to end this, yes I want Cass back as Batgirl. I think that mantle is her's to carry till she doesn't want to. Not cause Bruce tells her to pass it on, not cause editorial wants a white girl to be Batgirl again, but because she actually does find herself moving on from the mantle (to Batman, but that's another conversation). However I also continue to support Cass when she's not Batgirl cause I love her character. Two things can be true at once. I don't consider ppl that only support Cass when she's Batgirl less Cass fans than me. I don't consider Cass fans that like the Black Bat era or Rebirth!Cass less Cass fans than me. And neither should you. We're all fans of Cassandra Cain. And that's what matters.

Yo you're like the only person I can find on tumblr that goes to/talks about AAU (that's kinda weird to me) but I'm an incoming freshmen and I wanted to ask for your... idk review(?) of the school. Like what do you like, what do you hate, and if you would recommend it? Thanks in advance!

lmao there’s a few of us we just don’t talk about .. i mean i don’t even talk about it besides the fact that it says in my faq but a bunch of ppl on here just randomly started asking me about it out of the blue so LOL

some other active tumbl arteests that go here/graduated recently are moopdrea (vis dev) and celihime (illustration) if you want to ask them things too. don’t tell them i sent you lmao

i guess what i like about aau/my program is gonna be diff from other ppl… and majors treat you v differently here … like animation, vis dev, and illustration seem like they would be in the same vein but they have totally different requirements, workloads, atmosphere etc

things i like:

personally there are some classes that legit changed my life and my entire view on art and myself .. like ive been extremely humbled compared to who i was in 1st year

most profs i’ve had are rly sweet ppl that genuinely wanna help you but idk if that’s specific to my major/focus (illustration - comics)

with stuff like the annual spring show and all the connections the school has, if you’re reALLY good at the time you’re about to graduate you can prob land a sweet gig(some rly awesome graduates in recent years work at disney, cartoon network, marvel, dc, etc now but pls note this is just a fraction of graduates)

things i don’t rly like:

not every prof does this but a lot of profs i’ve had are big into the mindset that it’s glorious to overwork to death for your art/cut ‘useless’ ppl out of your life etc (some profs aren’t into this at all but yeah a lot of profs do tho)

just gonna say this outright … in some classes i didn’t learn shit and wasn’t into it lmao

oh yeah there’s an 80% dropout rate or at least that’s what it was when i first came here LMAO. the program is also 5.5 years!!! not the standard 4 and idk why they don’t tell you this more clearly :^)))

this isn’t rly a thing i like nor dislike but i think prospective students should know that the grading system is real tough, at least in my major. if you do a pretty good assignment you get a C, A means professional level, and D means fail. so it’s not something you can cruise by in with last-minute work, at least in my major (i think in other majors they’re more lax about it)

^those things are about the actual classes but w stuff like facilities it’s like alright? just little things like if you’re not an animation/gamedev student or don’t have a digital class you can’t use the cintiq/intuos labs without paying a fee, the meal plans are expensive and the cafe food isn’t rly good (also they’re overcrowded a lot of the time), dorms are shoddy and also expensive lmao … it’s a for-profit school in sf so this is just what it is

i can’t just say whether or not i’d recommend the school i think it depends on a ton of different factors bc ppl come from different walks of lifei have learned A LOT here but at the same time the amount of mental breakdowns i’ve had from financial strain and beating myself up are just incredibleee lmao ….. you also v likely will have to overwork … especially in my major at least. there’s assignments that i’m rly not joking i spend 40 hours per week on, so that my profs won’t yell at me. and there have been some finals weeks where i slept like 20 minutes per night for like 3-4 days in a row. i have a friend in my major who gets A’s in all her classes who said during finals one semester she’d wake up in the morning and have to throw up and then go straight to class bc she was so overworked??i mean i’m rly not trying to scare you but no one told me how things would be before i came here so i feel like i should tell ppl now that i know what it’s like …… you rly have to work that much sometimes just so that you can get a grade above C (it’s not like that for every class but some classes are v intense)

I FEEL LIKE I’M SAYING A LOT OF NEGATIVES AND MAKING IT SOUND LIKE HELL LMAO but i mean …. i!!! like i rly dO love how much i’ve learned here and all the amazing experiences i’ve had (like near epiphanies lmao) and i’ve met many priceless friends as well ….. everyday is still good for me and i’m grateful that i’m so privileged i can study here. but just pls be aware of some of the cons since not everything is sunshine and rainbows here

so like. id post a real review of the bye bye man but none of you care. nor should you.

the bye bye man was just plain bad. it wasnt hilariously bad. it wasnt even cringe-ily bad. it was just plain bad.

if youre morbidly MORBIDLY curious i recommend you go see it ONLY on a nice saturday night when theres more likely to be more people watching it. those are the ONLY circumstances you should see the bye bye man under. because with any luck youll have an audience like ours where nobody took it seriously and you could all laugh about how bad it is together.

it’s not worth renting and its def not worth buying. not even for a small viewing with your friends. fifteen bucks is also a steep price to pay for a communal bonding experience, so allow me to recommend: not watching it at all. or tbh paying for a better movie and sneaking in to see it

its only any good with an audience that makes fun of it. and even then it was only good for about fifteen minutes.

in case youre morbidly curious but also dont want to LITERALLY waste your money; a review underneath:

first and foremost the bye bye man himself looks like lord palpatine and voldemort had a kid

mixed with that beauty and the beast ripoff with the guy and the tattoos

now what IS it?

its a worse version of freddy krueger. nightmare on elm street had charm to it, yknow? it was kind of a comedy. it made fun of horror. freddy was an enjoyable character. there was also a story behind it, even if it took a few sequels to get to

spoilers oncoming, obviously

the bye bye man, seemingly, is an escapee from the teenagers prison part of fosters home for imaginary friends because the first and only time he was every mentioned coming up was when a kid blamed killing his entire family on “the bye bye man.”

the reason its a ripoff of freddy krueger, by the way, is because the bye bye man only exists as long as anybody knows his name. as long as someone remembers he exists he DOES exist. which makes it an obnoxious and probably lame metaphor about how we “give our thoughts power”

the film also neglects to tell what would happen if you said “bye-bye, man” to someone. we dont know if that would summon him

but basically what happens is someone learns his name and because LOL ITS SO RIDICULOUS LOL (the movie acknowledges this but acts poorly on it by not even making it interesting or a big deal) people spread it and tell others. but theres no reason hes named the bye bye man. theres no big fuck at the end where some deep hidden meaning (or even obvious meaning in that he makes you go bye bye) where it ALL MAKES SENSE AND GIVES U CHILLS

if they wanted it to be better, to prove how ridiculous it was we could “give power” to this idea and spread it because its silly they LITERALLY just should have gone with “peepee poopoo man” like honestly

but we get 0 backstory as to where he came from. not even like. “OOO EVIL INDIAN VOODOO LOL” like NOTHING WE DONT KNOW WHERE HE CAME FROM THEY DIDNT CARE THEY JUST WANTED TO THROW SOME SPOOKY AMBIANCE AND SOME JUMPSCARES TOGETHER AND MAKE SOME MONEY IT SUCKS SO MUCH

once you know the name you start hallucinating and all you can think about is the bye bye man and you end up coming into danger the longer it is until something bad happens.

HOWEVER

only one character dies because of this. she sees a car crash and a dying family and runs to save them (which is the same way the family of the person she was driving with died, which means it would have made more sense for HIM to see that and get worked up over it. not to mention she was canonically sensitive to spirits so just by being in close proximity to him itd make sense shed see their death scene which means we dont even know that the bye bye man caused that to happen. and shes the only case of the bye bye man “killing” anyone. just knowing his name torments people with intrusive thoughts and nightmares which could be explained by................................ mold or mental illness.)

so bc you know his name you get nightmares and nono thoughts and the only way to kill him is to kill everyone who knows about him so they cant spread his name. but somehow he always sticks around. BECAUSE SOME ASSHOLE WHO KNEW NOBODY COULD KNEW HIS NAME. CARVED THE BYE BYE MANS FUCKING NAME INTO A DRESSER FOR EVERYONE TO FUCKING FIND. IF HE KNEW NOBODY COULD KNOW HIS NAME. WHY DID HE PUT IT THERE? OR DID THE BYE BYE MAN PUT IT THERE? BUT CAN THE BYE BYE MAN STILL EXIST IF NOBODY KNOWS? CAN HE MANIPULATE THE PHYSICAL PLANE? if the bye bye mans name exists on paper but nobody knows it, by platos/socrates forms does he still exist in some capacity?

let me make a list of all the things the bye bye man HIMSELF has been shown to do DIRECTLY (there is no proof he even causes the nightmares)

fed his demon dog dead people

randomly appeared in the house

scratched up the bricks on the fence outside the house

poked the guy in the forehead (im not even joking. he doesnt do shit at the end. he just boops the guy on the head to the tune of the doorbell ringing and then the guy kills himself because its “too much” apparently)

the bye bye man did nothing wrong

the bye bye man LITERALLY DID NOTHING WRONG

HE DIDNT DO ANYTHING

HE JUST WANTED TO FEED HIS DOG. AND BY ALL CONCEPTS, U COULD JUST SEE THAT AS HIM BEING A DEATH GOD. THE REAPER. HIS DOG COMES AND EATS UR BODY AS A REPRESENTATION OF DECAY (since his dog is like. giant and skinless itself.)

so yeah the movie doesnt even prove that the bye bye man is doing anything actively malicious. maybe the bye bye man WANTS people to forget about him maybe he doesnt want people getting into his business

so.

-no backstory -harmless antagonist -boring jumpscares -unlikable characters (he has ONE intrusive thought his gf is cheating on him with his bff and “SOMETHING IS SERIOUSLY WRONG HERE!!!!” and immediately starts grilling them, assuming they ARE having an affair) which brings me to: -barely anything happens and they start freaking out because somethings wrong (she zoned out and doodled in her notebook and he had a nightmare, and suddenly theyre super defensive about it) -a twist at the end that doesnt even ultimately matter -FUCKING OPENING FOR A SEQUEL LIKE PLEASE FUCK OFF -stupid name with a DECENT concept that was executed horribly because they didnt know wtf they were doing. the concept, btw, was only DECENT. and even if it had been a dumb metaphor about the power we give to ideas, maybe that should have been focused more heavily on than being a throwaway line ONCE during the beginning of the movie -annoying seance scene with nonbelievers and SUPER DUPER REAL PSYCHIC, WE SWEAR

it was just bad dont watch it

EDIT: also they did nothing with the fact that “ooh, you the audience thought it was silly but u all kno his name and told ppl and everyone is @ risk.... now U ALL NEED TO DIE!!!! MUAHAHALOLHAHA”
