I hate when I hyoerfixate on a traditional thing because it's like; who am I going to talk to about this? Does anyone wanna hear me scream about all the versions I found of this traditional Portuguese song??? Does anyone wanna hear me talk about the parallels of love and control? The usage of the song in a communist event? The weird obsession of Portuguese traditional songs of being love songs that have the men in love with the women putting themselves in the position of "you're such a beautiful woman and great and I love you but I'm so bad and not worthy of your eyes even landing on me", which very likely comes from the Galician-portuguese poetry of medieval times where Galician-portuguese was the prestige language over here and everyone was writing poetry with this exact concept which in turn was inspired by the Provençal poetry and oh my gods it's been almost a thousand years and we still have repercussions of that in today's (Portuguese) society.

Ocarina of Time: the Sacrimonial Elegy
Chapter 1 out now!
It is raining. The stone walls are slick from it. It washes away everything but the wreaths of fire that enshroud the parapets. The moat swells and rises to swallow a gasp and the last whisper. Poison-purple smoke pours out the doors of a grand temple and stains a child’s fingers red. White flames overtake the summer-green prairies and winter-blue forests. A bell tolls, the one-too-many clangs sinking into the earth and splitting it open. When the world cracks apart it does so with the cry of a man. "A true friendship; a feeling in the heart that grows stronger over time. The passion of friendship will soon blossom into a righteous power and through it, you will know which way to go." -Sheik, LOZ:Ocarina of Time A complete retelling of a beloved piece of Zelda history, this not the Ocarina of Time you know, but it is the Ocarina of Time you love.
...
Leafy bushes lined the Great Deku Tree’s clearing, growing around the roots of the old growth trees that made the body of the Kokiri Forest. In late spring, the shade of the forest’s canopy held on to the cool night air at dawn. The Deku Tree sighed, the ancient tree spirit’s enormous trunk heaving, his branches rustling. A strong breeze swept the clearing. He spoke to the fairy before him, his voice a low murmur, nearly indistinguishable from the hum of the earth itself. The water fairy, glowing rare blue in the pink sunrise, flitted about in front of his nose.
It was as rare to see a fairy alone in the forest as a Kokiri. It was rare for such a somber air to settle over this clearing, so often filled with light and laughter. The hushed conversation between the fairy and the Deku Tree ended abruptly with the fairy zipping away, into the forest proper, leaving morning dew on the leaves that her wings brushed as she flew. She knew the forest well and navigated through the trees with urgency.
She broke into a larger clearing as the first proper rays of sun shone over the tops of the trees. Little wooden doors on little tree houses creaked open, and the Kokiri village sprang to life as the children of the forest woke up. The fairy weaved and winded, dove between the slats of a garden fence and looped up around a small suspension bridge. One early riser jumped out into her path, and in narrowly avoiding colliding with the toddler’s head, she swerved instead into a lattice with a disgruntled squeak. She shook herself and kept flying.
At the southern edge of the village was a treehouse with a crude drawing of a small figure battling a somewhat blob-shaped clawed monster carved into the trunk. It had a curtain for a door, making it easy for the fairy to slip inside. From the ground below, curious eyes watched the curtain flutter.
Inside the small hut was a bed, under the window, which never really got much sun because it faced south and into the dense forest. Sprawled in the bed, fast asleep, was a boy, who had springy, dark curly hair, and brown freckled cheeks still well round with youth. His pointed cap was askew from having worn it to bed, and his blanket was kicked off and tangled around his feet. He drooled slightly onto his pillow.
Navi hoped the boy had a nice dream. She fluttered around his face, calling into his ear, “Hey, Link! Wake up!”
Link didn’t rouse, only snuffled and buried his face in the pillow. Normally Navi would be happy to let him wake in his own time, but there was no time for that today, there was an emergency. “Link, listen! The Great Deku Tree is asking for you, okay, wake up! Now!”
If anything, the boy seemed to just get more asleep, splaying out on his belly and sinking deeper into the mattress. Navi looked up in exasperation and started bouncing up and down on his shoulder. That didn’t work; she was too light and Link had always been both a deep sleeper and sturdier than the other Kokiri.
So she sprayed water into his ear.
Link sprang upright with a loud, disgusted whine, swiping at his pointed ear. Navi hovered around him while he pouted, rubbing the sleep from his eyes and fixing his cap. When he spotted her, the grumpiness evaporated from his face and he grinned, his big, round brown eyes sparkling with joy.
“Navi!” He gasped. The boy couldn’t see past her glow the way she winced as his voice cracked. “You’re back! It’s been forever!”
She dimmed her light so Link could see her properly, and smiled. She didn’t comment on the fact that Link had grown-- a lot -- in the year since her last visit to the forest. “I know, too long. I’ll have to tell you all my stories later, though, okay? The Deku Tree is asking for you.”
“Mmgh,” Link rubbed his eyes again. “Now?”
“Yes, Link,” Navi said. At her solemn tone, Link’s his eyes widened, and he scooted to the edge of the bed.
“ Now ?” He repeated, the meaning different.
“Yes, Link,” Navi also repeated, the meaning the same.

My reactions and opinions on (almost) all songs on the Eurovision final
Sweden was kinda catchy and good. Not anywhere near the best but it was a nice start. Maybe a bit basic. 5/10
2. Ukraine was amazing. It gave me chills, the voices were amazing, the visuals were amazing. 9/10
3. Germany honestly didn't stand out to me. Idk, it wasn't bad exactly, but it also wasn't good? It was kinda just there. 3/10
4. Luxembourg was quite good. While it wasn't one of my faves, it was definitely a solid song and performance. 7/10
5. Yeah, no Netherlands. Keep in mind I only watched the finals and hadn't listened to any of the songs prior to it, so I haven't even heard the song yet. I don't think I will either. ?/10
6. Israel was amazing, Eden has an amazing voice, great stage presence, she looked absolutely etherial. The song conveys all the pain it's supposed to. No doubt my favourite and if I had voted I would have voted for her. 10/10
7. Lithuania, the song wasn't bad, kinda nice to listen to, the performance was also kinda good, but it didn't stand out long term. in fact while making this list i had to rewatch the performance because I remembered nothing of it. So yeah. Extra points for not being a basic english song. 5/10
8. Spain, I have complicated feelings about you. It definitely stood out. Sadly the most forgettable part of it was the singer, which is a very important part. She had presence, and the concept was definitely good and showy, but her voice was meh, a bit weak. I think the backup dancers lowkey carried the performace on their back. Overall, 6/10
9. I straight up did not like Estonia. I'm sorry, no offense. Also one of the guys looked like Michael from VSauce and that was very distracting, but I'm not docking points for that. 2/10
10. I know Ireland had some controversial reactions. BUT. I adored it. I'm sorry I did, it was one of my favourite performances, they did amazing, I have nothing to point out exactly. Idk, 9.5/10.
11. Latvia didn't do much. Kinda boring, forgettable. Maybe it was also not a great idea to put such a lacking performace right after one of the most amazing ones, that might have biased my opinion. 3/10
12. Greece wasn't my style of song but as it went on it kinda grew on me. It was catchy and fun. Not amazing exactly, for me personally, but solid, good. 6/10
13. Ok the UK, listen. I'm biased, because Olly Alexander is the main actor in one of my favourite shows and i think that skewed my view of the song. It was entertaining, fun, nice to watch. Nothing amazing, but good. 6/10
14. Norway, complicated feeling. It looked great, it sounded great, but something was lacking. It felt like they were trying to reach very far but not really getting there? Idk how to explain it. Something was missing from it. 6.5/10
15. Italy was quite good. I've seen people say it wasn't, but I don't see why. I liked it a lot, even tho it wasnt one of my top songs it was still really good. 7/10
16. I'm not sure it was my style, but Serbia still had a very solid song. It was good, and looked beautiful too, and her voice sounds magical. Good vibes. 7/10
17. For Finland... Did I love the song itself? No. Did I love the performance? Yes. I laughed so hard and it was so unique and funny and entertaining. Like, I could just laugh at how silly and random it was and that felt good. 8/10
18. Portugal, listen. You always bring sad fado-sounding songs. It's not that it's bad but people don't care. Get new material. That's boring, bring something fun that gets people smiling and dancing and it's catchy and unique. You're forgettable. Extra points for being my country, and for being Yom Kippur ready with all that white. But damn, I'm not pleased. 4/10
19. Armenia was great. I love when they include unique and personal vibes in these songs. This didn't feel like a boring generic english song. It felt unique, it had so many different and special elements and that made it really stand out to me, and I think they were SEVERELY underrated. 8/10
20. Cyprus was a bit basic and boring. In fact I again had to search for the video because I didn't even know what the Cyprus song was. 2.5/10
21. Switzerland won as we know. At first the song didn't stand out, but I think it's one of those songs that the more you listen the better it gets. Also the vibes? Perfect. Nemo slayed and I'm not upset at all with this win. 8/10
22. Slovenia was good, it was solid. Despite that, it wasn't great, but it had a nice energy to it and I had a good time watching it. 6.5/10
23. Croatia, I had heard rumors they were the favourite to win, and truly they placed first in the public votes. I can see why, they were great and it was very catchy, the energy was contagious and I cannot stop listening to it. Also, it's fun. 9.5/10
24. Georgia had a fun, energetic, powerful sounding song. I appreciated, it was a good listen, but it wasn't amazing, didn't stand out that much. 6.5/10
I didn't have time to watch France and Austria, sadly, because I had to go out, so no ratings there.
Note: I'm rating the songs and performances I watched!! I'm not commenting on personality or actions outside the stage, or some people here would sadly have had much lower scores

Zelda 1 style sprites of Fado and Salami
The character sprites in this game appear to be limited to 3 colors, so Fado and Salami may not look completely accurate.
My friend told me about an open source project called Zelda Classic, which started as a clone of Zelda 1. It's possible to completely transform the look of the original game with it. Gamers love enhanced graphics!

As a Portuguese, it's rly incredible to finally see my culture represented in a videogame, especially since Esperança is based in my hometown Porto. So I just wanted to show you some comparisons and point out some details that will escape most people, since Portuguese representation is non-existent in the media:
Tumblr media
When Esperança loads, you can immediately see that the map is heavily inspired by Aliados/Santa Catarina street/Bolhão and what is obviously supposed to be the chapel of souls or the church dos Congregados, the 'elétrico' (yellow tram), and its many metro/tram tracks that cover our cobblestone streets. A nice lil detail is that there is a lot of construction work happening on the map just like all over Porto since we became one of the top cities to invest in with our tourism boom.
Tumblr media
You can go to a fado place. Hey ever heard about fado? Probably not - here is my favorite if you'd like to listen. Fado is traditional Portuguese music that according to google 'evokes a despairing belief in a futile destiny filled with pining and hopelessness'. Portuguese culture it's pretty melancholic, yeah.
You will see these ceramic black chickens, they're called rooster of Barcelos. Everyone used to have one in their homes but now it's kind of corny decor and sold as tourist trinkets mostly.
You have of course our river and rabelo boats and what I believe is a picture of our windmills and highways (which I immediately recognized from driving across the country) and our dams (this might be weird but Portuguese dams are so beautiful! they look gigantic and we don't have plain land so to me they always look like something straight out of LOTR).
Tumblr media
Porto is a cobblestone street city, with gothic and Manueline-style architecture that you can see all over Esperança. On the map, I found our loooooooooong steep staircases, (fuck) ctt mailboxes, gazebos, our distinct direction signs, our tall tower of clérigos, and our city hall. Also, Lusitano tile repairing is such a nice lil nod to Porto's commitment to rehabilitating our tile-decorated façades. There's also a giant Portuguese flag I forgot to screenshot that is a nod to our giant flag in Cais de Gaia (can't find a picture but it's ridiculously gigantic trust me).
Tumblr media
Chestnuts, chouriço assado, our coffee shops filled with our traditional coffee cups, queijadas and natas (if you are from Lisbon and tell me to call it pastel de nata will literally punch you this is Porto map so it's nata), and of course BREAD. In the map one of the spawns is an adega full of wine barrels - you can google it but Porto was a port (hint hint) for wine and our culture is very connected to wine. And yes we still have them and you can visit them for wine tasting.
There's our yellow metro and idk if this was intended, but we have invested a lot of money to have a TGV (high-speed train) and it's supposed to connect Porto to the capital in just 1:15 hours but it's been like a decade and only now it seems they are serious about it - anyway, I found the timetable for the highspeed amusing.
And who is the guy in the portrait? Well, he looks like 95% of all Portuguese men. If you know a Portuguese guy chances are he is short, has dark brown hair with unkept beard, and glasses too. I bet his name is Luís Miguel João Pedro.
By the way, if you don't know, Esperança means Hope.

there’s a whole trend of music theory videos on YouTube that analyze and generally use video game music to explore it. I haven’t watched many of them at all, but it is interesting that as far as I can see no one’s ever done one on Chrono Cross—-a few on Trigger, which makes sense—-and I think that’s because analyzing that music presents some unique challenges for that type of analysis and what the audience wants. Cross’ music has of course a lot of wonderful harmonic moves and some of my favorite melodies, a lot of surprising rhythmic choices (the kind of stuff where it’s ‘in a weird time signature’ but you’ll never notice because it’s so naturalistic, doesn’t call attention to itself). But really it’s the problem of the arrangement and orchestration that’s the issue: Cross’ music draws very intimately, also naturalistically, on a surprising amount of musical traditions from around the world—-off the top of my head, various Celtic musics, Fado is a strong one, Italian prog specifically, kulintang and gamelan, traditional Japanese music, jazz, Africanist rhythms and melodies, and brings them into a point where they meet in a unique style. It’s really what gives that mess of a game a sense of existing as a place; it’s extremely hard to describe and analyze, still utterly unique despite its popularity and influence

Can I Get a Redo?
Tumblr media
The walk along Avenida Sá da Bandeira toward Praça da República involved an interesting assortment of architecture styles and street art. Art deco, strange bird, baroque, renaissance, tree. It also proved to me that I didn't hate Coimbra, we just were having a few failed interactions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All too soon, I was back at Santa Cruz Café, still slightly before the fado concert. As I looked over the cafe menu, I stumbled in my plan. It was just before 6pm. I didn't want coffee. But I also didn't want to buy an overpriced drink without consuming more food. So... Hmm..
Tumblr media
I hung around the fountain in front of the cafe -- maybe the sound would escape. Not really. I looked at the menu again. I still couldn't convince myself to buy something that I didn't really want --- even when trying to tell myself to think of it as an entrance ticket. So what if you don't consume it. But you will because it's in front of you and it's weird to just let it sit there and you want none of these things and ugh.
I quit.
I walked into the market on the square, grabbed a few things, and went back to the hotel. I quit today. I promise to try again tomorrow.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course, trying again tomorrow involved trying in the early morning liquid air. Liquid air where you start to crazy cackle at the ridiculous fact that you are using an umbrella when you are walking into liquid air and there is literally no point. You are wet. All over. Just because -- air.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wandered around the same areas as the day before, this time without crowds or a blazing hot sun.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I ducked into a cafe and navigated my way through ordering breakfast and a coffee. I was almost off to my next city. I sort of wanted a redo on Coimbra, but other than my fado fail, I couldn't really say I'd do anything different. I tried an epic new dish and ate way too much gelato. I explored ruins and wandered a city still mostly asleep.
But still the feeling of "I just don't think I did Coimbra well" has stuck with me.

12, 20, 22!
thanks for the ask fado!
12.) okay be honest. pick a favorite oc from this ocverse.
Anders...hes my boy and not just because his name sounds like mine. He's such a cringefail boyboss and i love him so much. autistic king. got engaged to someone like 10 years his junior who he met when she was 15 and somehow this is a good thing in context. more powerful than anyone else in the magic system but he would rather just do paperwork than beat anyones ass. unfortunately for him hes in A Narrative
20.) your ocverse just got a movie trilogy a la hunger games style. how have they horribly mangled your message/theme so that the movies are now a showcase of what the original was condemning?
Romanticizing the Succession itself, changing the nuance and themes so that Selene needs to win because there needs to be a Good Queen and she has Good Ideas so it'll be a good thing if she's queen, changing the ending so someone's actually able to win. also making Sol into an unambiguously correct revolutionary who has the right idea about everything and isn't warped by his own upbringing. and also making the point of anders' subplot "see, eugenics is bad because disabled people can contribute to society and actually disability can give you superpowers!" rather than the much more complicated reality of that thread
22.) you have been given unlimited funds to make two adaptations of some sort, however you cannot make any other adaptations of any other sort. which two formats do you choose?
well first id use that money to support myself while i finish writing this gotdamn book lmao. and then i'd make it into an animated show ‚ I can see the Arcane style working super well for this verse.

I went dancing in my boat Out in the ruthless sea And the roaring sea Says that I went out to steal The unequalled glimmer Of your beautiful eyes Come and see if the sea was right Come here and watch my heart dance If I dance in my boat again I won't go out to the ruthless sea Nor will I tell it where I Went to sing, to smile, to dance To live, to dream... Of you!
Music rec of today and kinda continuing on my "music for High-fantasy Luso-Brazilian Pirates" post - this STUNNING live version of "Canção do Mar" (Song of the Sea) by Dulce Pontes. I've known this song ever since I wasa kid really, because it was used as the opening song of a Brazilian telenovela back in the 90s, so I really love it! This style of music is called "Fado" (meaning "fate/destiny") and it's a traditional music style from Portugal. It's very similar to the Irish traditional music in the sense of how it conveys melancholy, grief and sadness, lots of them about the sea and the sailors' lives lost in it, really fascinating how there's this parallel. Specially this singer here, BRO, she DELIVERS SO HARD. I've never seen her singing live before, and I was out of fucking words, she's AWESOME. ANYWAY, follow me for more japanese idols and traditional Portuguese music. I guess. sdkfhsd

Nenad Jelić i Laza Ristovski - Opera - an obscure Fourth World gem from Serbia, 1985, reissued on vinyl (only) by Soundway Records. Here is a full album playlist from Youtube:
youtube
Soundway Records reissues a limited 1000 copy run of Nenad Jelić and Laza Ristovski's seminal experimental Serbian album Opera originally released on the former Yugoslavian state record label PGB / RTB in 1986. Combining Balkan and South American percussion and rhythms with synthesisers, vocal samples, and at times unexpected acoustic instruments (zither and harmonica), the album has slowly become a cult classic amongst fans of fourth world and avant garde music and is a kaleidoscope of contrasting moods and inspirations. The recordings were the brainchild of Nenad Jelić: one of the most original artists to appear on the Serbian music scene in the late 1970s onwards. Jelić played in a wide variety of former-Yugoslavian contemporary jazz, modern classical and rock / pop outfits throughout the 80s until the present day, including the two, classic early 1980s LPs recorded by the Lala Kovačev Group: Balkan Impressions Volumes 1&2. A percussionist obsessed with melody and silence, and a multi-disciplinary instrumentalist, Jelić teamed up with the famous Serbian keyboard player Laza Ristovski in 1985 to help him arrange and realise his vision for the record. The year before its conception, Jelić had moved to Portugal and it's evident in the compositions that the musical waves that blow back and forth across the Atlantic Ocean had melded with the various Eastern European, Mediterranean and Balkan traditions that he had grown up with. "This is where I completely immersed myself in the atmosphere of the Saudades, which helped me articulate my own personal vocation as an author, enabling me to focus on melancholy, melodiousness, the fluidity of the pulse". The Lisbon setting of the fado bars gave rise to the first impulses which would become Opera. However, becoming "just another fado artist" wasn't enough. "My temperament, my previous experience, my sensibility, they all clearly pointed toward a fusion of ambient, jazz and pop music laced with elements of the various Balkan musical traditions as well as the universe of the Latin American sound." "I saw Portugal as an exceptionally emotional country with its trademark nascent sorrow, ever present in all those swaying voices and guitars," he explains. "I felt it very familiar with my own sentiment and it affected my style enormously." These are the exact same elements which he finds moving in any music, be it of Portuguese, Romanian, Greek, Turkish, Hungarian or Spanish origins. "If we try and seek the connection between all these worlds, we will inevitably stumble across the Romani people who left their mark pretty much everywhere." Jelić's approach is intuitive: "for me, music has always been a sort of a prayer, or a rite of sorts. It doesn't matter if it's the voices or the percussion instruments." Re-mastered from the original tapes this newly reissued Soundway Records version on vinyl sounds far better than the original pressing which unfortunately had pressing flaws and surface noise throughout.
