Why Beetlejuice is the Best Tim Burton Movie - 05/06/2020
Beetlejuice is the best Tim Burton movie ever made. Many directors can be said to have developed their own style over the course of their careers, and there is no other director that has a more distinct style than Tim Burton. In only his second feature film, Beetlejuice, which was released in 1988, exhibits and expresses a macabre, grim, and whimsical style that would since become synonymous with Tim Burton. It sets the tone for much of his later work yet to come, such as Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow, and Corpse Bride.
The main plot revolves around the couple of Adam and Barbara Maitland, played by Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis, who within the first 10 minutes of the movie get killed in an auto accident heading over a bridge into a creek and drowning. The newly dead couple soon discover that they now have become ghostly spirits that are forever trapped within their house. When a new couple with a daughter move into their house, they attempt to haunt and scare away the new family. However, the new daughter who is a curious, gothic, and depressive teenager name Lydia, played by Winona Ryder, is the only person able to see the two ghosts. When Adam and Barbara are unable to successfully scare away the family, the plot takes a turn when they seek the help of a ghostly demon: the titular Beetlejuice, played wonderfully by Michael Keaton.
Throughout the course of the movie, we are treated to a visual and creative feast of set design, stop-motion effects, and Oscar-winning make-up. For a movie with macabre subject matter, you would think it would be a mostly dark and grim affair, but it’s the vivid colors used that really stand out to me. Tim Burton would later become known for having a much darker and gothic looking color pallet in his films, but the Director actually has his cinematographer make wonderful use of color in a number of his films, and Beetlejuice is one of the best examples of this. Most notably when Adam and Barbara take a trip to the afterlife waiting room, in which a comparison and contrast to the real-world DMV is ever present. It’s nothing but endless waiting, but in a much more colorful and vibrant setting. This similar color technique to establish setting would also later be used in Corpse Bride, where the afterlife is shown to be much more colorful and vibrant than the dreary normal life on Earth.
The Oscar-winning make-up of Beetlejuice shines its brightest in the afterlife, with the various deceased characters making up the waiting room. The man with the bone stuck in his neck must be one of my personal favorites. I also really appreciate the visual gag of having dead versions of the audience staring back at themselves in Juno’s office in the background, while Adam and Barbara are in the foreground of the shot. The exact make-up work I really believe won Beetlejuice the Oscar though is the stunning creature design of Adam and Barbara when in the film they later don their monstrous visages in order to better scare the family out of their house. They are two looks you certainly won’t forget after having seen this movie and are truly inspired.
One of the most distinct elements of the film has also got to be the engaging and creative score by Danny Elfman, who would go on to become a longtime collaborator with Tim Burton. Tim Burton would make it a habit of reworking with people that he has a great professional relationship with, most notably with Johnny Depp. The initial theme playing over the opening credits really sets the mood for the rollercoaster of a movie you are about to watch. Individual eerie elements are also added into to score to help set the mood for certain scenes, and they do a great job of transitioning the mood and tone for each subsequent scene.
It also cannot go without mentioning the brilliant use of the Banana Boat (Day-O) song, by Harry Belafonte, in the truly out of left-field and amazingly iconic scene where the two ghosts possess Lydia’s parents and dinner guests in another failed effort to scare everyone out of the house. The use of the song is even teased in the opening production company logo of the film. Adam is also seen to be listening to Harry Belafonte music in the attic just after the opening credits. It cannot be overstated just how much the music of Beetlejuice truly breathes life into the film.
The costume design is also inspired, and Beetlejuice himself is eventually adorned in his most iconic look, that of the black and white striped suit that he can be seen in on any poster of the film. Oddly enough, the character only wears the famous suit for just over 3 and a half minutes of screen time throughout the entire movie. In fact, the titular character of Beetlejuice only has about 17 and a half minutes of total screen time throughout the movie, not even making his first appearance until just over halfway through the film. However, when Beetlejuice does make his first appearance, does he ever own the screen and movie.
You can tell that Michael Keaton had an absolute blast playing Beetlejuice, and his fun and enthusiasm shines throughout his performance. It’s reported that he even adlibbed a great deal of his lines, and you can tell that helps increase the flawless comedic elements to his character. The voice Michael Keaton has given to the character is such a great affectation, and it does a perfect job of having Michael Keaton really own the role and make it his own. You cannot show a picture of Beetlejuice to someone, and then not have them instantly think of Michael Keaton and the voice he gives to the character.
The movie also possesses an excellent script by Michael McDowell and has some nice and interesting bits littered about. The character of Otho, played by Glenn Shadix, is shown to have an expert knowledge of the supernatural, even correctly knowing about the souls of those in the afterlife becoming civil servants after committing suicide, as the audience has previously seen when Adam and Barbara took their trip to the afterlife waiting room. The character of Delia, played exquisitely by Catherine O’Hara, also exclaims, “Do you think I want to die like this?!,” after having one of her sculptures encompassing and trapping her earlier in the film, which is a nice bit of foreshadowing towards the climax of the film.
What really sets Beetlejuice apart from other Tim Burton films is its originality, and the screenplay is a truly unique piece of scriptwriting showcasing what it means for two characters to die, and to have their afterlife get harder and not easier than when they were alive. It has its own unique vision and story, which is something that is lacking in most major Hollywood films that are made today. Many of Tim Burton’s later works would be adaptations from preexisting properties, but Beetlejuice was a completely original concept from script to screen, and as such, Tim Burton would have more of a say and representation of his own vision towards the overall final product.
If you look at the career of many directors, you will find that some of their best and most unique work are the early films that they make during a time when they are more driven by creativity and having a message that they need to say and represent through their art. Tim Burton is no exception to this, having what I consider to be his best films made during this period. Among them are Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, and of course, Beetlejuice. If you include The Nightmare Before Christmas, which was directed by Henry Selick and not Tim Burton himself, but completely his story and characters, then there is no doubt that this period was the best creative output of his career.
Later works of Burton would mostly be adaptations of previous works, but with studios just wanting to add that Tim Burton style that was so well done in his early work. This was done successfully in the very first Batman films that were directed by Burton. The character of Batman and the setting of the dark and gritty city of Gotham created a perfect marriage of a preexisting creative property and Tim Burton’s style. It was only with the turn of the Millennium that this method of having Tim Burton add his own flair to a property would become hit or miss.
Tim Burton adaptations of Planet of the Apes and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory would prove to be critical and creative misses for Burton. Other films such as Big Fish, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, and the underrated Dark Shadows film adaptation would prove to be films that produced better results of adding that particular Tim Burton style to a film. However, it is mostly a rare occasion when we get to see a new and mostly original Tim Burton film, and that is a shame, because that’s when he is truly capable of creating some absolutely memorable pieces of cinematic beauty.
The legacy of Tim Burton will always be mostly defined by those early and unique films of his. The most defining of which will always be Beetlejuice. It will always be the film most people will think of first when you mention the name of Tim Burton. While it may not be the best technically made and acted movie by Tim Burton, it will always be the best “Tim Burton” movie, since Tim Burton has become a movie genre all unto himself, and Beetlejuice is the defining movie of that genre.

Ella's mother calls her clever at least twice that I heard.
LITTLE ELLA HAS A LEGIT FULL SIZED CAROUSEL HORSE IN HER BEDROOM??? And with that, it looks like there was at least 1 puppet stage, what I can only assume to be a carousel music box but it's built like a Christmas Pyramid, a mobile, and a canopy bed.
The way she and her dad both say thank you this must have been very difficult for you when they get news the one they love is dying???
The Just So and Shall We lines repeat too.
The dress she's wearing when her father returns and when her mother's dying are the same, it just had fake flowers on it when he returns.
We see 3 different Ella's walking with her father toward the meadow. There's little Ella in Black after her mother dies, then what I assume is teenage Ella in a white or blue floral dress sand her hair work to the side and flowing over her shoulder, and then Lily.
Ella lets her shoes hand off her feet a lot
Her physical reaction to her father mentioning Lady Tremaine even before he says anything about marriage.
That butterfly comb will never NOT remind me of Rose's in Titanic.
I can't see anyone in that time period actually making their day Lucifer???
I hate Lady Tremaine's black hat when we first meet her.
The way Ella smiles and laughs for her father and then visibly deflates the instant he turns around KILLS me.
When the Tremaines arrive, Ella's mother's portrait is on the bookshelf in the study/parlor/whatever that room is where she died.
Drisella tells Anastasia their mother's lying about the house being charming and says it's just manners. Anastasia tells her to shut up.
The look Ella's father gives Anastasia when she says they never thought to decorate, and how he looks back at Ella.
Before he leaves on that last trip, Ella KNOWS he isn't well and she can tell something going to happen.
Why the fuck does Tremaine get so jealous of hearing about Ella's mother when she CLEARLY doesn't love her father?
The way Anastasia and Tremaine both look at Drisella after the complexion line kills me.
Like... Tremaine legit kept up a smile until the carriage pulled away and it was gone in less time than it took to blink.
The harp just sitting in the corner. Totally Ella's mother's. Js.
When Tremaine banishes her to the attic, it sounds like Ella was going to say something about staying in a smaller room?
By the time Ella and Tremaines talk in the study/parlor, all of her things, her father's things, and her mother's things are packed up and set aside, including the portrait of her mother. Suspicious much?
Anastasia and Drisella have toys. At first, we are Anastasia holding a doll and Drisella a rabbit, but they switch later.
Casual reminder that Ella's the youngest, since Anastasia calls her their little sister.
I want a full version of Lily singing Sing Sweet Nightingale and Lavender's Blue.
There are flower decorating and motifs all over this house. The walls. The clothes. Even in the stone wall in the kitchen.
Ella's look at Drisella while she's singing. And like... Tremaine herself tells her to shut up, but she gets mad at Ella for being like cringe.
Ella immediately knows as soon as she opens the door and see Farmer John.
Tremaine is a damn good actress though. Her eyes treating when they get the news.
THE BEEHIVES ARE SO CUTE.
That red bedroom of Tremaine's is so garish though.
Another casual reminder: ELLA NEVER GOT TO PROPERLY MOURN HER FATHER BECAUSE SHE WAS WORKING 24/7.
I imagine the scraps they gave her to eat lessened as time went on and they had less food and money. But she always shared them, no matter how meager.
Jacqueline is iconic.
A GIANT POT OF LAVENDER IS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE STAIRS TO THE ATTIC FROM THE KITCHEN.
Gods that robe of Tremaine's is AWFUL.
"Is there someone we've forgotten" They're dehumanizing her already. What a cunt.
Ella riding barebacked and workout reigns will never NOT impress me tbh.
Convince me the stag wasn't a test for both Ella and Kit from Fairy godmother.
Gods Richard was PERFECT in this role. And every time I hear his real accent I'm shook.
Kit's fucking whipped from the start.
Ella only calls him Kit. You can't tell me otherwise.
His sympathy when she says "They treat me as well as they're able". Tell me that this like doesn't ring in his head later and that's why he knows she's been stopped from coming to him.
RICHARD'S DIMPLES
IT'S KIT. KIT. I'M KIT. You absolute fucking disaster of a man 🤣🤣
And you know the Captain never lets him live that down.
Kit goes away a little and comes back when he says he hopes to see her again.
Ella's little lip bite.
Gods those blue and yellow split outfits on the palace staff are ATROCIOUS.
The banter with Kit and the King. And Kit and Ella in the secret garden.
MASTER PHINEAS.
Why are Kit's outfits so attractive?? 🥺
Kit and the king are so short compared to the Captain and the Grand Duke.
The Captain's laugh.
"That's very kind of you. To think of me." My poor baby.
THE LOOKS AFTER SHE CLAPS BACK IN FRENCH. SLAY.
Also, "I speak French not Italian".
Kit, honey you can say it's for the people all you want. You're not fooling anyone.
What the actual fuck does moonface even mean??
Ella making her dress in a day??? Damn girl.
I love Fairy godmother's beggar woman cloak???
Gods I HATE Lady Tremaine.
Ella's pink dress swear her mother's wedding dress like in the deleted song from the cartoon. And this is the hill I'll die on.
"Hairy dogfather" JFC.
I'd have liked the whole fairy godmother getup better without those dinky little wings tbh.
Ella not knowing what cantaloupe is.
MR. FUCKING GOOSE.
I'm sorry, but the lizard footmen creep me out. THEY DIDN'T NEED TO GIVE THEM THOSE TEETH LIKE WTF.
Ok but like... Would the greenhouse have been repaired at midnight though???
Honestly, Disney deprived us all of Lily being trapped in the pumpkin a la the Cinderella episode of Britannica's Tales Around the World with Pat Morita.
WHY TRANSFORM THE MICE. IT'S A FARM. THEY HAVE HORSES.
"I can't drive, I'm a goose" is my favorite line.
Unpopular opinion??? But I liked the ballgown better either without the butterflies or during the transformation when there was only those few blue ones.
I do like the gold butterflies in the slippers though.
I want to know how they got the crystals to stay in Lily and Helena's hair.
Sitting in a crinoline must be awful.
The palace is stunning.
I love every single one of the chandeliers in this movie.
The king waves at Chelina and Kit KNOWS.
The girl on the staircase next to the Tremaines when they get introduced laughs at them. And honestly, same.
"Someone I meet once TONIGHT".
For real, how did the guards at the stairs not hear Ella's name or that her footman was a lizard? They were like not even 5 feet away.
Ella playing with her skirt when she happy and scared.
KIT'S SMILE.
I wish we saw more of the purple in the ballgown.
I love that Ella's descent had Lavender's Blue and the dance has Once Upon A Dream in the score.
The Captain HAD to have told Kit that the Grand Duke already promised him to Chelina. And who gave him the right to do that anyway?
Kit's stammering.
Ella's gasp when he takes her waist and the way she looks at him is like the signature Lily shot. They did the same thing in War & Peace.
"They're all looking at you. Believe me they're all looking at YOU".
The one part in the dance where they kinda flap their arms up and down reminds me of a butterfly and idk why.
Dancing wearing a sword had to be tough. Especially when your partner's in a crinoline and a heavy ass dress. Props to Richard.
Lily tripping at one point during the dance.
Even Chelina loves Ella let's be real here.
Why is there so much telling people to shut up in this movie???
WE GOTTA FACE FACTS HERE, KIT AND ELLA ARE EVEN BETTER AND MORE LOVING PARENTS THAN THEIR OWN WERE.
I love the secret garden scene so much.
When Kit puts the shoe on her foot... Why is that like 😏😏. I hate feet. Why is that breathtakingly romantic??
Why do they always hesitate? GO AFTER HER IMMEDIATELY DAMN IT.
The crier's aids when he hits his head on the stairs.
Ella's interaction with the king.
Kit you're so slow. She's in glass heels and a crinoline and she still outran you.
DISNEY I WANT A DIRECTOR'S CUT OF THE FILM WITH ALL THE DELETED SCENES PUT BACK IN. I NEED KIT SAYING THE LADY ISN'T HERE TO DEFEND HERSELF.
They honestly don't see the footman using his coat tails to lower the portcullis??
Anastasia actually seemed pretty nice to Ella after the ball? Saying she looked cheerful and patting her arm? But then again, we really only see Tremaine and Drisella ripping the dress soooo?
ELLA YOU CAN'T KEEP A SECRET TO SAVE YOUR LIFE.
Girl you need a better hiding place than under the floorboards.
But like the music in the attic after the ball is so sweet???
KIT AND HIS FATHER. THANK YOU FOR LETTING HIM CRY AND SAY I LOVE YOU.
Also like... Notice that Tremaine's Just so to Ella's father was really patronizing and condescending. Ella's to Kit was insecure and uncertain. But the king's to Kit was proud.
At least Kit's not dumb. He's meet this girl multiple times. He don't need a shoe to tell him it's her.
WHY RIP THE ORIGAMI BUTTERFLY THOUGH.
Ella was full on ready to die in that attic to save Kit.
Why do all they guys' pants fit really well except Stellan's? His are loose and baggy.
Y'all know this girl is young and blonde wtf.
Also, fun fact. The girl that asks the Captain if she can try the other foot is Mimi Ndiweni. She played Fringilla in The Witcher on Netflix.
The Grand Duke turning away from the old lady, but the Captain letting her yet the slipper on anyway. 🥺
I want to know where in the line Kit was hiding.
Also how many takes they had to do of Sophie and Holliday trying the slipper on. Cause I wouldn't have been able to do it without laughing. Especially at Holliday's face.
Like... Even if the plan had gone down the way the Grand Duke and Tremaine wanted, I don't see him keeping his word to make her a counted and get good marriages for Anastasia and Drisella.
"YOU HAVE NEVER BEEN AND YOU NEVER WILL BE MY MOTHER".🗣️🗣️
Ella and Kit is my favorite score in the whole movie.
You know, the girls actually seen happy for Ella. Especially Anastasia. Her and Ella getting along better like in Dreams Come True is canon ok.
NEVER GONNA GET OVER KIT AND ELLA WEARING THEIR PARENTS' RINGS.
I love Ella's wedding gown.
Where did they get all those flowers in the winter though 😂

10 of my favorite songs rn
Requested by @manifold-superstorm
While I basically listen to whatever I feel like listening to (which can be from any genre), I tried to include as many songs as I could that I thought fit manifold's style.
These aren't in any particular order, so... apart from what ones I think of first to last.
Let's go.
10. "Soul 4 Sale" and "Joystick" by Simon Curtis
So let's start with two guilty pleasures of mine. I usually am not a fan of songs that are just... "Sex! Sex! Sex!", but hear me out. Imagine one of those songs... except the song is catchy, and IT'S FULL OF PUNS. Joystick is especially terrible in this regard. And regarding Soul 4 Sale, I don't know why, but the faster Curtis sings, the more I enjoy the song. I would probably recommend looking at "Diablo", and "Beat Drop". Not "Flesh" or "Psycho love" because fuck it, they're overrated.
9. Pleather for Breakfast from No more heroes
While the entire soundtrack for NMH slaps, Bad Girl's theme is weird in all the best ways. If you want a song that sums up a character perfectly, here you go! Demented whispers in the background, the fact that it musically sounds like something drunk girls would jam to, it's perfect. And yes, I've requested this before, but NMH's soundtrack is, imo, really that good.
8. Soundtrack to Killer Instinct
Same with the previous entry, I've mentioned KI's soundtrack before, but it is actually that good. You'd think that it'd be hard to come up with songs that are unique for every character, and have almost all of them be great. Except wait!!!! Welcome to the killer Instinct soundtrack, where electronic is mixed with everything from rock solos to korean throat singing. While Cinder's theme, "Inferno", is iconic, I would also recommend ".execute", "Warlord", "temperance and vengeance " and "Touch me and I'll break your face"
7. "Madwoman in the attic" by Black Briar
I love a lot of this band's songs, and they recently dropped a new album. My favorite of the newer songs is the aforementioned "Madwoman in the attic ". The singer has a beautifully distinctive voice, and the lyrical work here is amazing. Which is kind of interesting. Seriously, compare this Dutch band's lyrics to the average song you get from, idk, America. The fact that they're use of the English language is more advanced is somewhat concerning.
6. "Lantern in the night" by Rachel Rose Mitchell
I could list this woman's entire work here, but since I've already done something like that with Killer Instinct, here we are. I just think this song is really pretty. Yeah. And, as per usual with Mitchell, she uses elements of Fantasy to convey stories of real issues people deal with. Check her out!
5. "Artemis " by Lindsey Stirling
Ok, to prevent myself from fully geeking out over Lindsey Stirling, I'll just leave the description as this. This is actually a well fitting song for the goddess of the moon. Powerful, and yet serene. And, of course, Lindsey's violin work just makes this piece that much more amazing. If you or anyone else believes that violins can't be used in dubstep, think again. And yes, the opening does lowkey sound like star wars, but I'm sorry, am I supposed to see that as a negative?
4. Overkill by Riot ver. Nuke time.
So, I don't play Beat Saber, but I enjoy watching other people play it. And watching these types of videos on YouTube was what introduced me to this song. This is honestly a song that I just have fun listening to. Especially at the end, where I swear it's like someone gave the song 50 shots of pure espresso. Like, that weird, primal scream before the beat drops on more time? Great. The eery robot lady voice? Perfect. I feel like I'm stuck in the middle of an all out paintball gun war, and I'm strangely ok with that.
3. Honey I'm Home by Ghost
Well, I'm going to have to turn in my cool kid card, because yes, I even listen to vocaloid songs. Specifically covers tho, because I personally can't stand how the vocaloids sound. I would reccomend the cover of this song done by UmbraticForest on YouTube. Anyway, I love the majority of Ghost's songs, and this one is one of their best, imo. Containing themes of religion, drug abuse, mental illness, etc, it can get dark. But, like with all of the artist's songs, there's a point to it. The song tells an intriguing story, and is absolutely worth your time. It also doesn't hurt that the song slaps.
2. We like to party (the vengabus) by the vengabus
Fight me.
Ok, but you know what? Sometimes... sometimes you need something mindless and happy. Sometimes, you need to smile. And with this? Let's see... catchy tune, potential for memes, cheery lyrics.... yeah, I can vibe to this. So, if you like to party, get on and move your body.
DO IT
1.
....
Ok, so I hope you all understand that being the ambiguously supernatural creature that I am, I am obligated to include this song somewhere.
Number 1 is the Spooky Scary Skeletons remix by the Living Tombstone.
How do you turn a simple little tune into a banger? Like this, apparently! And I don't care how long it is until Halloween, Janet, you can listen to this song all year long. I don't need to explain how amazing this song is, right? I do? Well.... no. I am clearly unworthy of describing the pure joy this song gives. And if that wasn't enough, let me put this out there.
Have you ever considered,
Memes? :)
That's my list of 10 song I'm currently listening to. Manifold, I don't know if you'll enjoy any of these. Hell, it may have cost any respect you had for me. I still hope you enjoyed nonetheless, and the artwork will be coming soon! In the meantime, feel free to tell me what you think.
I apologize for wasting your time,
Spooky S Skeletons

Ten New Thoughts About Van Gogh Landscape Paintings That Will Turn Your World Upside Down | van gogh landscape paintings

If you are like most people, you are likely to have at least a couple of thousand old prints boxed up and stored in an attic or dark closet. That number is high enough to deter most people from getting their old photo scanning project off the ground. Even if they know that they don’t have to tackle it by themselves; that it’s possible – and even advisable – to rope in a reliable professional scanning service to help with the tedious parts.
But if, like the New York Times, you have something like six million old photos in your archives, then it calls for industrial grade scanning support and strategies to see you through it.
The old photos were stored in the Times morgue, a giant underground repository of old newspaper clippings, images and books. As the digitizing project got underway, a ten person team worked steadily to get photos out of physical drawers and folders, feed them through heavy duty scanners and then, with some help from Google, catalog and archive them digitally.
Why was this effort so important to the Times? Like other legacy publishers, the Times decided to take the plunge and digitize its massive image collection when it realized how valuable these photos were as windows into the past.
As Monica Drake, an editor at the newspaper said:
“We have covered the world for such a long time we just have this vast store of information. The immediate goal is to take advantage of all this material and information we’ve gathered for so long and bring it back to life.
One way the Times is doing this is through an archival storytelling project called Past Tense. Since it was started last year, the Past Tense team has already begun plumbing the Times photo archive for interesting feature stories. These have included recreating photos of iconic New York sites first taken in 1951; an exploration of dance photography, a look at the City during rainy days from the past, and a lot more.
Many of these photos and the stories behind are now part of the NYT’s archival Instagram page, to give us a dose of both history and nostalgia. Here are a few of our favorites….
Scenes of Summer: Road trip ready; A resourceful kid in the city; Coney Island fun ride
View this post on Instagram
Summer has officially begun, which means families across America will be loading up their cars with sleeping bags and beach towels and setting off on adventures. The soundtrack to the season is a chorus of “How much farther?” and “Are we there yet?” Whether you’re headed to the city or the country, the mountains or the sea, a cherished traditional spot or a destination as-yet-unknown, it’s less about where you and your loved ones are going than how you’re leaving your everyday lives behind, together. This Staten Island family was thrilled to ditch their borough for a pre-Airbnb home-swap on the Canadian border in 1972. “The description of the house seemed to meet our vacation requirements precisely,” the original caption read. “An escape to nature with adequate room for our 6 children in an exotic-sounding spot not more than one day’s drive from New York.” Photograph by Dennis Chalkin/The New York Times (Story by @vvchambers. Sometimes, a vacant lot is just that: a lonely, forgotten space full of garbage and weeds and old mattresses that long ago lost their bounce. But sometimes, that lot is a playground, each tattered stack a trampoline ready to send you soaring into the sky. In the summer of 1987, #nytimes staff photographer Fred R. Conrad captured this 14-year-old boy as he turned an abandoned corner of Brooklyn into a personal gymnasium, practicing backflips under the blazing August sun. #nytarchives

The hashtag #SundayFunday might be relatively new, but the sentiment goes back decades. You can see it in this photo taken by our photographer Barton Silverman on a hot Sunday in June 1976. “Youngsters cool off by riding the Water Flume at Astroland, Coney Island,” read the caption that was published in @nytimes. Pictured, from front to back, are Fatman Ekinci, 5; her brothers, Kris, 7, and Fevzi, 9; and in the background, Lillian Pacheco, 7. Astroland was first mentioned by @nytimes on September 13, 1962, when the paper called it “the first major project for frivolous purposes in Coney Island in 25 years.” But the park’s final #SundayFunday came in September 2008. The park's owner said the landlord refused to discuss the expiring lease. “This place lets kids trust their legs, they don’t have to worry about cars, and neighborhoods are getting so rough. They’re closing down a legend,” Walter McCoy, a resident of East New York, told @nytimes. And Keyira Serrano told the paper that she spent every summer weekend at Astroland. On Astroland’s final Sunday, she told @nytimes, "we’re going to have all the fun we can, while it lasts." — @adri_ninfa_gio, @nytimes news assistant #ConeyIsland #SundaysInBrooklyn #amusementparks

Perilous pursuits — for fame, or a paycheck, or both

A worker who’s really, REALLY on his toes does some perilous-looking spring cleaning at the United Nations on April 17, 1953. “Window cleaners are a very, very passionate bunch,” said David Knowlton, president of the International Window Cleaning Association. “Most of all, in the high-rise industry, it’s the allure of hanging off a building.” There are fewer fatalities than you might expect among cleaners like the intrepid man in this photograph — only a handful a year nationwide. “It’s really personal error that gets in the way, so you just have to stay focused,” says Tony Natoli, of Tony’s Window Cleaning Service. “You only get to fall once.” (Link in bio.) Less than a month after he’d walked on a wire stretched between the tops of the Twin Towers, Philippe Petit performed another striking feat of aerialism at Great Falls in Paterson, New Jersey. “One hundred feet below him,” @nytimes reported, “the brown, murky waters of the Passaic River swirled over boulders, forming a frothy soup filled with sticks, metal pipes, beer cans and at least three automobile tires.” As Petit made the crossing, “dipping his pole from side to side, as if he were rowing a boat,” a crowd of 30,000 watched. Among them was the Times staff photographer Joyce Dopkeen, who snapped this picture of Petit pausing to kneel in the middle of his walk, which took about eight and a half minutes to complete. #nytarchives #JoyceDopkeen

Cigar, sunglasses, squeegee — check. Frank Kind, a window washer with over 40 years of experience, was fully equipped for the job when #nytimes staff photographer @Andrea_Mohin snapped his picture through a window more than 40 floors above Midtown Manhattan in July 1995. According to the report that ran with Andrea’s shot, “Tales From the Sky,” Frank didn’t think too much about the risks of his profession, at least not while he was working. “I just pay attention to what I’m doing,” he said flatly. #nytarchives #nyc #andreamohin

Reasons to be out and about in the city

Our staff photographer Marilynn K. Yee photographed these women and their children skating on Broome Street for a 1978 article in which #nytimes championed roller skating as a “fad revived.” The article claimed that skaters rivaled joggers in Central Park, and continued “New Yorkers are using their skates for exercise, relaxation, socializing or just as simple transportation.” Is that still true today? #nytarchives #MarilynnKYee

This 1978 photograph is from an afternoon disco party in TriBeCa for single parents and their children. “The little girl in the center stole my heart,” @mistyonpointe told us recently when looking at this photograph. “Music was always on in my house. My mother grew up dancing — ballet, tap, jazz. But I don’t recall dancing with my mother. Dance was my private time. It was an escape from the chaos and traumas of my childhood. My way of expressing myself.” Visit the link in our profile to read more of Misty Copeland’s commentary and to see more dance photographs from the #nytarchives. Demonstrating questionable eclipse-viewing technique, these “Broadway stars,” as they were described by the @nytimes caption in 1932, “show an unusual interest in the sun.” Along with President Herbert Hoover, who watched in Washington, “New Yorkers Turned Their Eyes Skyward” to take in the eclipse, which occurred on August 31 of that year. #nyc #history #photography #astronomy

If you are inspired by what the New York Times is doing with its photo archive, take a moment to see how you can rescue your own valuable old photos from oblivion. They may not be in a morgue, but shoeboxes and dark basements can have the same effect of keeping them trapped and away from the light of day. It’s time to get them out of the boxes and digitize them so that it’s easier to share these nuggets of photo nostalgia with others. The New York Times has shown us that it’s possible to scale even the tallest of digitizing mountains – with a little bit of help.

The ‘Brady Bunch’ Home Renovation Needs Your Help! Check Your Attic
PG/Bauer-Griffin/GC Images/Getty Images
Attention “Brady Bunch” fans! As you’ve no doubt heard, HGTV has purchased the Studio City, CA, home that was used for exterior shots in the original show. Now, the network plans to renovate both the exterior and interior, to match the backdrops we all came to know and love, in a new reality show slated to air in September, “A Very Brady Renovation.”
Yet apparently, finding those iconic furnishings that played a supporting role for the family’s shenanigans is proving to be a real needle-in-a-haystack hunt—and HGTV needs your help! So start sifting through your attic, basement, local flea market, eBay, and otherwise to find these hidden gems. The Very Brady Scavenger Hunt is on!
The “Brady Bunch” house in Studio City, CA, was only used to film exteriors.
realtor.com
“Many of these 1970s items are very rare and hard to find,” Abbi McCollum, vice president of convergence and social media for HGTV, explained in a press release. “We’ve seen an incredible response from ‘Brady Bunch’ fans across social media since we first announced the series. Now, we need their help to get the renovation of the house just right.”
While HGTV has provided a full list of what it’s looking for, here’s a sampling that is sure to inspire a TV flashback or two:
The avocado-and-cream flowered sofa that was the seat of many a family conference
The credenza under the staircase and the horse statue on top of it
Greg’s old-fashioned attic radio
Alice’s matchy-matchy bedroom furniture suite
Those fish trivets that were hung on the kitchen wall by the green refrigerator—and the green refrigerator itself
The stainless-steel double wall oven
The stuffed giraffe in the girls’ bedroom
A vertical, trapezoid shaped curio cabinet
The handles on the front door
The avocado and cream brocade sofa that Carol Brady is sitting on is in high demand.

Where to look for ‘Brady Bunch’ furnishings
If you want to get involved in this treasure hunt, or are just interested in scoring a few iconic ’70s pieces for your own (fill in the blank) Bunch House, we have a few ideas on where to start looking (that is, once you’ve exhausted digging through the junk collection in your parents’ garage).
Los Angeles interior designer, blogger, and collector Colette “Coco” Shelton of Cococozy.com loves using vintage pieces in her designs, and this Brady scavenger hunt is right up her alley.
Duplicates of this credenza, and the horse statue on top of it, are also among the items on the “Brady Bunch” scavenger hunt list.
HGTV
“My first stop to find the items they are looking for would be a flea market,” she says. “Each month here in Southern California, for example, there is either the Rose Bowl Flea Market in Pasadena, or the Long Beach Flea Market, where there are so many California classic retro items for sale from different vendors. I feel like I’ve seen the bedroom set, the credenza, the starburst clock, and more there.”
Those fish trivets hanging on the wall and the green refrigerator are also on HGTV’s list of most wanted items.
HGTV
Southern Californians may have the edge in terms of finding these items. “Since the show was shot here in the ’70s,” Shelton continues, “the likelihood is that the items were sourced locally and not necessarily one of a kind.”
Which means they may be lying around awaiting stardom if only the right fan spots them.
But what if you don’t live in Southern California? Fear not—you still have a chance.
“Another resource, of course, is online,” advises Shelton, mentioning sites like Chairish.com, 1stDibscom, Ebay, Etsy, and EBTH.com (or Everything But The House), where vintage items can be searched out and then bid on or bought outright.
Greg’s radio in the attic
HGTV
Shelton thinks that the sofa will probably be the hardest piece to find, since it might have been custom-made, but she recommends that you not give up. The ’70s are an era that hasn’t yet been completely picked over for furniture and accessories by designers and collectors.
“This is a super fun challenge,” says Shelton. “I can’t wait to see how it turns out!”
Where these Brady furnishings will end up
OK, then. Once you’ve located the perfect items for the Brady home, just what are you supposed to do with them? What are HGTV’s plans for them? Will you be paid? Will HGTV cover shipping? Those details are not clear right now, but all will be revealed in due course to those who’ve got the goods.
Alice’s matchy-matchy bedroom set
HGTV
“Fans who own vintage furniture and decor items true to the original TV series are encouraged to contact HGTV via social media for a chance to see the special items featured in the series,” according to the HGTV press release. Fans are asked to post a photo or video of the item on HGTV’s Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter using the #verybradyreno hashtag. A quick glance at those links reveals that they are also good places to check and see what other people have already located.
And the nationwide scavenger hunt begins.
