It’s all fun and games until someone gets hit in the testicles. That’s the take-home lesson from today’s France vs. Spain basketball game, at least. Nic Batum — who also plays for the Portland Trail Blazers — and his teammates were convinced that Spain had purposely lost a previous game in order to avoid facing off against Team USA. For Olympic teams to purposely throw games in London wouldn’t be unprecedented, after all. But, rather than taking a diplomatic approach to his suspicions, Batum hit Spain right where it hurts — literally. Shooting guard Juan Carlos Navarro was the unfortunate target of Batum’s fist.

Batum was angry with the Spanish guards for falling to the floor for what he believed was incidental contact throughout Spain‘s 66-59 quarterfinal victory over France at North Greenwich Arena.

France’s coaches and several players believed Spain intentionally lost a final preliminary round game on Monday when Spain blew a 12-point fourth quarter lead to Brazil. The loss allowed Spain to face France in the quarterfinals, and would potentially keep them away from the powerful United Statesuntil the gold-medal game.

Told some won’t think that a deliberate punch to the groin is in the ‘Olympic spirit,’ Batum told Yahoo! Sports: “Do you think if you lost a game on purpose, that’s the Olympic spirit?”
