DAY 3 of the @indie_roller challenge: Your Workspace Around a couple of weeks ago, I moved my home #studio into a smaller room in our house as we're expecting a baby a few months from now so gotta make room! Swipe left to see different shots of the studio plus my old studio for comparison. My new studio setup isn't as fancy, but I was actually surprised to find that it's working quite nicely for me. I work with large scale artworks (usually a meter and above) so I was worried about not having enough space to take a step back from the painting and see it as a whole, and also not being able to fit my stuff into the space without bumping into everything around me. Now, ideally I would've put the mirror up opposite to the window to lighten up the room more (the light would bounce off the mirror and make the room even brighter), but instead of wasting an entire wall on that, I opted for a more efficient solution of putting up shelves and storing my works underneath. In a way I'm glad that most of my artworks from 2017 backwards are back in Lebanon, otherwise I honestly don't know how I could've possibly managed! A tip--or couple--for anyone who has a small room/corner to make art: always utilize vertical space by installing shelves and/or wall storage. And tip two is to always try your best to customize this corner and make it your own. It always helps me to be surrounded by little trinkets and things I have collected or been gifted over the years. What I have here is just a fraction of it but it definitely helps in making this studio feel like I'm stepping into my world away from everything else! DAY 2 of the @indie_roller challenge: Your Work. I feel so lucky that I am able to create my own art and execute client commissions in my own style. This gives me a chance to continue developing and learning through experimenting in my home studio. The themes of my art aren't necessarily limited, but there is definitely an overall tone that's conveyed, often described by viewers as "dark romantic", "dark", "dystopian", and "poetic". The mediums I use to execute my work range from a humble mechanical pencil, charcoal, pastels, oil & acrylic paints, watercolour, digital media, collage, the list goes on... Sometimes a piece could take months of continuous work to be at a "finished" state, and the process is always different from one artwork to another. Sometimes there can be a lot of frustration, anger, tears, and "i don't want to look at this anymore". Other times it could go very smoothly--the almost suspicious kind of smooth. But that's part of the thrill in a way. No matter how many sketches, studies, or planning out is done, there is no way of knowing how things are gonna go when the time comes to paint. It's something I've learned to embrace and take advantage of. I'm like 5 days late on this #indieroller challenge but thought I'd do it because weekdays are a social construct. [Disclaimer] May spam your feeds with multi-posting in the next couple of days. So for those of you who are new here, hello, my name is Nour. I'm a Lebanese artist from Beirut, Lebanon currently living in the UK. I'm an MFA graduate (class of 2017) and I'm 25 years old. In the cliché sense, I can say that I've always known I wanted to be an artist. Growing up thing just naturally guided me to that path; from art competitions, to getting my first portrait commission at the age of 11 (which slowly turned into a steady source of income by the age of 14 onwards thanks to word of mouth), illustrating stories and comics for logal and regional magazines and publishing houses, to finally majoring in Fine Arts at university. I'm not sure how my art came to be what it is today, but it's just basically everything I like to draw/paint, influences of music, literature, video games, cinema, etc, that are just all mushed together. After permanently moving to the UK in early 2019, I have been on a new journey to properly establish my art career and I'm aiming to have a solo exhibition some time in the next couple of years.
