Ramzi Mallat in conversation with Najlaa El-Ageli and Yahya Zaloom
Artist Ramzi Mallat will be in conversation with Yahya Zaloom, director of P21 Gallery and independent curator Najlaa El-Ageli. The talk will provide insight into the artist's practice and cover themes regarding Fault Lines, his solo exhibition on show at the gallery.
Artist: Ramzi Mallat is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice explores the socio-political impact of globalisation on notions of identity and self. Mallat draws on a rich tapestry of theological and folkloric history of the Levant region, his work challenging the conventional notion of tradition as a civilisational legacy by revealing a narrative based on a society’s cultural vanguard in the course of a struggle. The artist has been appointed a Trustee for the IMOS Foundation in the United Kingdom and was selected as one of Forbes Middle East’s 30 Under 30 Honorers in 2022. His most recent short documentary has been awarded the 'Official Selection' laurel by the Scarab Film Festival in Dubai, UAE, the Story International Student Film Festival in Cork, Ireland and the Lebanese Independent Film Festival
Panelist: Najlaa El-Ageli founded Noon Arts Projects in 2012 with a mission to bring the best of contemporary art from the MENA region, from both emerging and established artists, and expose it to the world stage. She was selected to be a member of the jury for ‘The Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (AFAC) 2016 and 2019, and sat as member of the board for The London Prints Studio from 2017 to 2020.
Moderator: Yahya Zaloom is Artistic Director of P21 Gallery, a London-based charitable trust promoting contemporary Arab art and culture, committed to creating visibility for Arab artists worldwide. Yahya holds a BA in Mixed Media Fine Arts (University of Westminster, London), an MA in Visual Culture (University of Westminster, London), and currently studying MA in Art Curation by practice (University of Teesside, Middlesbrough).

EXHIBITION
Laila Shawa: A Living Artist
25th November – 3rd December 2022
An exhibition and a memorial event of reminiscences, tributes and love for a great artist Laila Shawa.
Artists, curators, family and friends are gathering at the P21 Gallery in London on November 24 to honour the memory of the renowned Palestinian artist Laila Shawa who died last month, aged 82.
Laila Shawa’s remarkable life and career spanned cultures, continents and a century of change. Born into a prominent Gaza family, she went to study at the Leonardo School of Art in Cairo, before moving to Rome where she graduated summa cum laude in fine art from the Accademia de Bella Arti and in plastic and decorative arts from the Accademia St Giaccomo in Rome. She also studied with the Austrian artist Oskar Kokoschka in Salzburg.
Her work is represented in international collections around the world including royal collections. In later years her style matured recognising the social and political issues that concerned not just Palestinians but oppressed people in many societies - often with incisive wit.
The memorial event, held in the presence of the honourable ambassador Husam Zomlot, head of the Palestinian Mission to the UK, will be chaired by the Palestinian architect Antoine Raffoul, RIBA.
Invited speakers include Jane Frere, Janet Rady, Aser el Saqqa, Randa Ashmawy and Sandra Watfa.
The exhibition will open at P21 at 6 pm with presentations starting at 7 pm. Several artworks by Laila Shawa will be on display at P21 and will remain on show until December 3rd.
A major survey of Laila Shawa’s works will open with a private view at October Gallery, London on February 1st 2023, with the exhibition opening to the public on February 2nd 2023.
A full biography of the artist is available online at: https://octobergallery.co.uk/artists/shawa
Curated by: Antoine Raffoul, RIBA, ICOMOS(UK)

Cry, the beloved country - exhbition's opening Dr. Gil Mualem-Doron (1970 UK/Israel) is an award-wining socially and politically engaged artist working in various media; primarily photography, digital art, installation and performance using participatory practices. His work investigates issues such as urban history, social justice, identity, transcultural aesthetics, migrations and displacement. His work has been exhibited extensively in the UK and abroad including Tate Modern, the Turner Contemporary, Liverpool Museum, People’s History Museum, Turner Contemporary, Rich Mix London, ONCA (Brighton) Haifa Museum of Art (Israel), East66 – Centre for Urban Research (Amsterdam), and Detroit – Centre for Urban Ecology.
The exhibition “Cry, the Beloved Country’ acts as an indictment against the homeland. A homeland that violated the holy oath of providing equal rights to all its citizens. A land that has been devoid, for more than a century, of freedom and justice. In this project, now more than five years in the making, Gil Mualem-Doron presents various artistic practices including historical research, media surveys, interviews, collaborations and participatory projects in the pursuit of possible responses to an impossible state. Using performances, installations, sculptures, photography and films, the exhibition is set out as a journey into “the heart of darkness”. Mualem-Doron has been featured in a few private collections and he has been commissioned to create works for bodies/individuals such as The Mayor of London, Counterpoints Arts, Platforma, and Ben & Jerry's. Mualem-Doron has received awards from the Henry Ford Foundation, Chevening Award for leadership, and the Art Council England. @p21gallery #p21gallery #Palestine #Balfour #1948 #Israel #Art #Installations #Photography #SociallyEngaged #Political #Nakba #Solidarity #Apartheid #Refugees #TelAviv #Jaffa #Racism @TCMargate #TurnerPrize (at P21 Gallery) https://www.instagram.com/p/CE33RSFF57y/?igshid=1m4adfhbll2ew

Adel Abidin Adel Abidin was born in Baghdad (1973) and currently works between Amman and Helsinki. Having received a B.A in painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Baghdad (2000), he continued to pursue his studies and received a M.F.A from the Academy of Fine Arts in Time and Space in Art in Helsinki (2005). Abidin’s art spans a variety of mediums ranging from video and sound installations to multi-media sculptures. His work is characterised by a distinct blend of sarcasm and humour which the artist utilises to delve deeper and to explore social experiences dealing with cultural alienation. In his own words, “This sarcasm I use is nothing but a medium of provocation to serve the purpose of extending the mental borders of the artwork beyond the limits of the exhibition space. I am always interested in creating opportunities to prolong the discussions beyond my artwork.” Since Abidin’s representation of Finland at the Nordic Pavilion in the 52nd Venice Biennale (2007), his work has been the subject of major exhibitions worldwide including the 5th Guangzhou Triennial at The Guang-dong Museum of Art (2015), The Pera Museum in Istanbul (2015) and Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, Japan (2013). Abidin has also been selected for the Finland Prize for Arts (2015) and he has also been a recipient of the 5 years grant from the Art Council of Finland (2012-2017). Beyond his artistic practice, he has also been the subject of various documentaries produced by the BBC (UK) and ARTE (France). This post is part of a series put together by Adela Foo, an intern at the P21 Gallery, featuring Arab artists on our social media platforms. #AdelAbidin, #ContemporaryArt #ContemporaryArabArt #MENA #ModernArabArtist #arabartist #arabart #p21gallery #adelafoo (at P21 Gallery) https://www.instagram.com/p/ByaoESVFtcN/?igshid=4f8wa2pc6ji3

intersection at Pop Brixton If you're ever in Brixton stop by Pop Brixton for a bite to eat and a closer look at DemaOne's fresco 'intersection' based on Stacey Ann Chin's Poetry.
'intersection' is an exhibition of sorts that refuses to fit mainstream curatorial standards. For we believe that great things can come of very little, and that what appears small and insignificant can be infinitely rich and complex. We want to redesign the Art space, expand it beyond the physical, using digital platforms to create accessible, interactive and inclusive exhibitions. With this in mind, we invite you to enhance this exhibition by posting your thoughts, pictures, soundbites on intersectionality using #intersectionbrixton on Twitter and Instagram, a selection of your posts will be featured at our closing party, find out more @Demacnn. #intersectionbrixton #popbrixton #P21gallery #joelvis_photo https://www.instagram.com/p/BwEtZ6BlYdL/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=12mxnycflv36
