I think I want to start actively using tumblr more (twitter hell finally getting to me) but I don’t think I ever used this website correctly in the first place?? So do I turn this account that’s always been strictly art into my main blog??? or do I make Another one for screaming??? ? ?? Repurpose my actual main blog that has no followers??? How do. I actually use this website.

“Je Te Vois Enfin” by Christine and the Queens

I’m not sure if it’s the French, the derangement (again, the French), or the persistent anti-climax but “Je Te Vois Enfin” is the first Christine and the Queens has really resonated with me. I’ve always found Redcar’s work approaching pop but never committing to its sticky sweet embrace, always averring the bracing, direct eye contact of a catchy melody. Here he seems to openly reject the strictures of pop music -- not in favor of the freedom of experimentation but his own idiosyncratic cage, constantly bracing the walls of a spinning room instead of leaving though the open door. The synths whizz past and Redcar spits his syllables with a sort of lusty disgust but it’s all a road to nowhere, a pattern that loops right back to its starting place, cursed to play out this same way forever. This is ostensibly our introduction to Redcar and I can’t help but love that he doesn’t make it easy for us. “Je Te Vois Enfin” is dense and angry and biblical and lonely-- he obviously isn’t having easy feelings, so why should his music sound like disco for your living room?

One of those rare “80s sound” songs that sounds like it could actually have come from the 1980s, “Je Te Vois Enfin” gets a lot of credit just for sounding like it was programmed from a handful of second-generation synthesizers and recorded in a tin-lined room. It’s dry and metallic and resonant, harsh down to its core. As MG notes, there’s never any feeling of release: the chorus loops us right through the same Sisyphean progression, an endless life trap in a song. It’s a synecdoche for the world, in this sense. There’s no where else to go, there’s no way to escape, we make our lives as we live them and we try to do so intentionally but what do we really know, anyway? As soon as we reach the top of the hill we find ourselves at the bottom again.
