«Credi che non lo sappia?» Thymeria si alzò di scatto, stringendo le labbra quando sentì tirare il braccio ancora bloccato nella corteccia. «Se ci sarà bisogno di ammazzare lo faranno, come Aurora ha già fatto.» si voltò e alzò lo sguardo alle fronde che nascondevano le stelle. «Avrebbe dovuto avere più tempo…»

«Adesso sarebbe colpa mia?» la voce di Arys era tagliente come le lame che aveva perso quel giorno di due nundine prima.

«Per quale motivo saremmo dovuti venire fin qui? Non ci hanno mai voluto e lo sapevi prima!» strinse gli occhi. «Fi unondespu[1]» aggiunse fra i denti in un sussurro mentre il fuoco le illuminava la schiena.

«Quale sarebbe stata l’alternativa? Stare nel Tergis con la tua famiglia?» continuò Arys, alzandosi con calma. «Non ci sono mai stati buoni rapporti tra di voi… o pensi non me ne sia mai accorto? Che vita avrebbero avuto lì?»

Thymeria si irrigidì.

«Figli di una Silvanus reietta e di uno straniero… abbi il coraggio di dirmi che sarebbero stati meglio.»

La mano sana si strinse.

«Avrebbero evitato una guerra, certo; forse Aurora non avrebbe mai fatto quel che le hai fatto fare; forse adesso sarebbero ancora con noi…» fece una pausa, avvicinandosi a passi leggeri a lei. «ma poi? Avrebbero avuto le stesse possibilità degli altri?»

Si voltò di scatto e si trovò Arys davanti. Gli si lanciò addosso e batté il pugno sul suo petto.

«Pobutsco ma cragui, Arys… pochebutsco Aurora o Leto si da…» scoppiò in lacrime. «cito pritrescengo dorutre zescsce co da…[2]»

«Pribuelme buodosco grotcii, Thym…» le sussurrò nella stessa lingua, circondandole le spalle con un braccio e pulendole le lacrime con l’altro pollice. «seciullo ma o iesunna vaca grotcii… empe sepomo ropiescsco schivetozze buelme…[3]»
