What is best wood for garden bench?

Oak is a strong, durable, and hard-wearing timber that is ideally suited to the manufacture of a timeless piece of outdoor wood bench. Oak has some characteristics that are important to understand.

SILVERING OAK : When allowed to weather naturally, oak takes on a beautiful silver-grey patina which for many is a sought-after look.

HAIRLINE CRACKS IN OAK : All hardwoods will expand and contract in ever changing weather conditions. This can occasionally cause some very fine hairline cracks on the surface of the wood.

Oak, having a more lively grain pattern is particularly prone to this. As the oak stabilises and weathers over time they tend to disappear and in no way affect the integrity of the bench.

Beautiful home in Lynchburg, Virginia is on the National Register, but not one realty posted its age. Anyway, it has 5bds., 4.5ba. $595K.

The entrance hall is quite large - look at all the space. Love the built-in bench seat, too.

This house is large- look at how far back the hall goes.

The sitting room on the right has an unusual ceiling, which is probably not original. The fireplace is lovely. In this room, they chose to paint the doors the same color as the walls, so they will always have to be painted to match. (Why do people do that?)

The sitting room to the left is quite large and has 2 closets, possibly for guests to hang their coats.

This room is set up as a TV room. 

And, this one makes a nice home office.

Here’s one large guest powder room- the washer/dryer fit in here w/room to spare.

Very large dining room. Look at the size of the fireplace and gorgeous oak mantel.

Love the kitchen. It’s a simple vintage remodel and the vintage stove is wonderful. 

This, however, is awkward. They put the modern stove and fridge in the pantry, but there’s no sink in here. It looks like there’s plenty room in the kitchen for this stuff.

They’ve got a little fire pit and a patio. Not lovin’ the patio and grill right under the neighbor’s window, though.

I thought that this house looked long across the front, but look at it from the side. It’s a huge home.

Princess Diana grew up at Althorp House, which is a Grade-I listed property that her brother Earl Charles Spencer has acquired now, but her family also used to own Dallington Hall in Northamptonshire.

Jackson Stops estate agents have listed the grand property for sale on their website, for an asking price of £995,000

The gorgeous period property looks as though it could be taken straight from a postcard, with a striking exterior and pristine gardens around it.

Highlights in the listing include the "two storey high staircase hall" with a "Georgian oak staircase" – quite the entrance! There's a vast drawing room, a dining room and magnificent breakfast room.

The games room is another plus to the five-bedroom home which we are sure will be snapped up by a lucky buyer soon.

It has a wonderful history after it was built around 1720. As well as the Spencer clan, it was owned by the Raynsford family, and also once was a convalescent home for wounded soldiers during the Second World War.

Althorp House is still within the Spencer family, and the late Princess of Wales' brother, Earl Spencer, opens the doors to his family residence each summer for visitors to come inside.

In the meantime, you can get your Althorp fix as Charles and his wife Karen have launched a video series dedicated to educating people on their property, taking royal fans behind the scenes.

Prince Harry's leaked memoir, Spare also detailed his desire to be buried at Althorp alongside his mother, and the royal goes on to say that wasn't possible so he was forced to select elsewhere.

The Oval Lake is where Diana is buried, meaning visitors can't access her gravesite but they can leave flowers and tributes at the memorial temple on site with a bench and portrait dedicated to the late Princess.

"Passion's a precipice"

It was a special day, that much could be seen from the roses, tulips, daisies and poppies tucked in the breast pockets of the deep green overalls. Countless heads were storming outside through the backdoor of the concrete giant named "Academic Institution 'Pride of Tomorrow'" and into the garden which consisted of several circular fields with benches underneath the ancient oak trees.

"Be careful! I am warning you now, comrades. If you don't stop rushing down the stairs we are going to... ugh. They are unstoppable. Can you believe this youth?" One teacher said to the other who was even more indifferent. They watched the groups of students enjoy their last 20-minute break before they would head back into the classes and receive their graduation packages.

"Can't believe Skoj made us sit through the entire math class and even do exercises. I swear he would keep us hostage even during a bombardment." Xin rested his heel on the edge of the bench as he stood and enjoyed the warm, late spring sun. "It's the last day, for god's sake. Math is no longer necessary for life. Ever. In any aspect."

"I am counting hours." Viktor sneakily rolled up his sleeve to look at his wrist watch. Watches, like any other jewelry, weren't allowed on school grounds.

"Watch it." Zentir commented as he sat on the bench with his head leaned on Artem's shoulder who was enjoying his sandwich in peace. "Skoj is gonna storm down the stairs and rip it off your hand."

"May he try. I have a hundred more sitting at home in my suitcase." Viktor said with his usual, cheeky smile. "Still trying to make some sales. Kasya, would your folks like some elegance on their delicate forearms? I will sell you three for the price of one."

Hear My Soul Speak pt. 1

Gwilym Lee has bought a beautiful Victorian styled home for himself as he prepares for an upcoming role in something potentially huge. His friends Joe and Ben help him move in!

Gwilym shut off the car and let out a sigh, observing the beautiful black and red house before him. He heard Joe fumble with the door handle to his car, and Ben shuffle around. He got out and took out the key he gotten beforehand from the agency he bought the house off of. He looked towards the beautiful garden gazebo type thing that was perched in the backyard, that's how big it was.

"Hey, can we go look around the backyard first? I really wanna see the view!" Joe asked, taking off out back. Ben followed and so did Gwil.

"Geez mate, this is going to be a lot of up keep! It's beautiful though. Its not everyday you find a Victorian styled home by the ocean for sale." He said as they came up to the breath taking view. The gazebo was very nice, it was very large and had over head cover. The garden was extremely elegant with all kinds of flower. One thing the agency mentioned about this place, a rich business man named Matthew Y/L/N owned this, and he raised a family here.

There was even something here left behind after all these years one of his daughters made by hand, and it was a stone bench with designs of butterflies, and two hand prints from different people. Gwilym only saw pictures, that was until he say the very bench in front of him and he went up to it.

"Hey guys, remember that old bench I told you about that came with this?" Gwilym asked and both boys turned towards him and nodded, looking at what he was staring at and ran over.

"Oh, no way! Doesn't this have the really old carvings as well?? This is fucking history." Joe said, inspecting the bench. Gwilym leaned down and saw the first butterfly design. It looked so beautiful and.....So real. Like it'd fly away at any moment. Joe found the hand prints and he held his hand up to the larger ones, the hand way too big for his.

"I think it's safe to assume the larger one belonged to a guy. There is a smaller one there too!" He pointed out. Gwilym held his hand up to the large one and was just about to connect it, but he heard another car door. All the boys stood and quickly went back out front and saw Rami had just arrived, in awe at the house before him.

"Rami! So glad you could make it!" Gwilym said and pulled him in for a hug. Before he could be interrupted again, he went up to the door and unlocked it. All four boys stepped inside and Joe let out a low whistle when looking around at the inside.

"Goddamn Gwilym, this place is fucking beautiful! You've got the best taste in things!" Ben said as he made his way to the living room. Rami looked around the kitchen, and Joe went into the library. Gwilym went up the large steps where beautiful bay windows gave Gwil a whole new world. He could see the ocean for miles, and the sun dancing on the cold waves. He couldn't believe his eyes.

"Uh, you guys! I think you'll wanna come see this!" Ben shouted from downstairs and they all rushed into the large open room. Ben stood by the beautiful fire place, and Gwil went up to him while the other two stood behind.

"What's wrong Ben? My house isn't haunted, is it?" Gwilym joked. Ben pointed to a weird looking porcelain butterfly figure on the mantel and looked back with a slight smirk.

"So what, this family really liked butterflies. There is nothing to be afraid of, Benjamin." Rami spoke, but Gwil took a look closer and Ben tapped his shoulder.

"I tried lifting it, but I heard this weird grinding noise! Try to pull on it!" Ben said, his eyes wide.

"Oh come on Ben, it's not like there is a secret door that leads to a secret room or something, this house is far too old for something so advanced!" Joe said laughing. Before anything else was said, Gwilym pulled the butterfly and it came forward before going back down. The fireplace in the wall made a grinding noise again and the fireplace moved to the right, and a set of stairs assembled. Lights came on and lit up a flight of spiral stairs down to a room, and all the boys looked at each other in pure shock.

"Oh my fucking god......" Rami muttered. Joe's mouth hit the floor, and Ben took a step forwards.

"Let's go down there. I wanna see what this secret room is!" Gwilym shouted and took off down the beautiful wooden staircase. The boys for some reason followed and after a solid minute of walking, they reached a lit up room with walls painted a soft blue color, the floor made completely of beautiful white tile. There we no windows, but there was a door off to the left. There was a small bed down there which looked really old, and a oak wood desk with things still left on it.

Gwilym ran his fingers over the designs on the walls, that were carved in. There were butterflies, flowers, and finally, a name above the bed.

Gwilym looked over at Joe who was in awe.

"So, what the hell do you think this was? A secret study?" Gwil asked. Rami cut in with a small snort.

"Or a creepy, old fashioned sex dungeon. No, I'm joking. I think maybe someone used this as an escape, its just too private."

Ben let out a shout as he fell onto the tiled floor, gripping his foot. The boys all shot over and looked for what made Ben fall. Ben cursed as he pointed towards a loose set of tiles, crawling over to it.

"Huh, well this is what made me trip. Is this a small door to another secret basement maybe?" He asked. Gwilym crouched down and flipped it over. Beneath was a small sheet which appeared to have had in it, and Ben reached in to grab it. He opened the sheet and saw an old, red journal with a white butterfly on the front.

"Butterflies are popular here, wouldn't you say?" Rami asked and Gwil flipped it open to the cover. In beautiful cursive writing was a small info page.

Gwilym repeated this outloud and looked up to the boys, who stood in silence.

Techniques we use to depicting images on memorial bench designs

At Classic we have a number of techniques we use to depict images on our memorial bench designs and one of our favourite things to do is the colour resin inlay. There are several techniques that can be used. Here are,

✅Skimming off the excess glue

Modern art collector Poppy decorated her 95 yr. old Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, cottage in vintage style with technicolor pizzazz. 

The living room’s furniture, in purple and lime, is all from the mid-century period, including a classic Marshmallow sofa. 

The bench was a garage sale find, and Poppy had the cushion made for it.

The colorful kitchen has red & stainless cabinets, plus a vintage reproduction baby blue fridge.

The sitting area in the bunk room is Mid-Century Modern orange & lime.

Principal Jeremy Bull and marketing director Tess Glasson, both of Alexander &CO, were always interested in purchasing the house next door to their Bondi Junction property, should it ever come up for sale. When it finally did 10 years later, they saw a rare opportunity to buy the property and convert this into a workspace of sorts. 

‘We were looking for commercial properties, and we thought we don’t know how this will work, but let’s buy it and build a house “thing” that we can use to show clients through, and provide a working from home HQ/showpiece,’ says Jeremy. 

That was the initial plan, but with Covid normalising more unorthodox working arrangements, Tess and Jeremy decided to make this their team’s permanent business headquarters. 

‘It’s a house, it’s a residential showcase, and a working from home HQ. Broadly our workforce moves in and out, works from home, and comes in as they need to,’ explains Jeremy. 

The space is also used for industry events, and occasionally for entertaining out of hours by Jeremy, Tess, and their four children who spill over from their house next door! 

Works commenced on Alexander House in February 2020, which saw the previous house on site replaced with a new four-storey interior behind the original facade. 

The floor plan now contains an open-plan with banquette seating to accommodate the practice’s team of 24; a voluminous basement area with workstations and materials; breakout spaces for meetings and quiet work; and three bathrooms. There’s also additional ‘wellness’ amenities, such as a steam room, outdoor shower, ice bath and pool.

As principal architect of the project, Jeremy’s vision was for a ‘safe space for reflection, experimentation and to nurture the creative spirit.’ This concept is reflected in the interiors, which incorporate a number of prototypes, reimagined works from previous projects, bespoke pieces created in collaborations with local craftspeople; and never-before-seen material applications. 

A small sample of these include a series of outdoor furniture made in conjunction with Re. Studio Collective using recycled building waste from the original building and a rammed earth technique; the first ever use of Lutyens Bricks from Natural Brick Co; custom furniture by Hugh McCarthy and Athol Wright of CDF Studio; and lighting pendants made in collaboration with Shaun Dudley of The Lighting Guild, including a seven metre long pendant that connects all four levels.

‘The house is sort of a random menagerie of things we’ve always wanted to own for ourselves,’ says Jeremy.

Among the various influences referenced throughout are old chapels and churches, with their tonal palettes, double-height volumes, and limestone and sandstone walls that appear to erode away over time. The monolithic pink concrete table by Concrete Bespoke (which weighs 500kg and was craned in to the space) is also similar in form to an altar. 

‘Although falling under one story or narrative, each of the rooms is quite specifically different in terms of techniques, materials and details,’ Jeremy says.

Sustainability was another key consideration, resulting in two underground tanks with a total water storage of 22,000 litres; a solar system that generates up to 45kWh of power daily; a Tesla Powerwall battery; and two underground Subpod worm farms processing up to 30 litres of food waste weekly.

Overall, the biggest ambition of this project lies in its deliberate ambiguity. Not simply a gorgeous project, Alexander House is an architectural showcase – a purpose-built live-work set up aiming to challenge preconceptions of home, family, and work.

Full-scale Home Remodel Inspiration

  A single dad recently hired the talented Lisa Furey of Lisa Furey Interiors (previously featured here & here) to help with the full-scale gut remodel of a contemporary style home overlooking a gorgeous duck pond and park in Villanova, PA. The designer selected all finishes, from flooring to the millwork. She designed custom cabinetry throughout the home, and selected the handmade tile, stone, plumbing and lighting. The designer also created furniture plans, made the furniture selection, designed window treatments and rugs. The best part of this job for her was creating a happy space for a great dad and his endearing young daughter.

Sneak Peek: Cassina Garden Club's Tabby and Tillandsia 13th Annual Garden Walk

It’s not springtime without the annual Cassina Garden Club’s annual Tabby and Tillandsia Garden Walk. Seven private gardens have been selected to feature the breathtaking, luscious varieties of native and transplanted flowers and vegetation across St. Simons Island.

In addition to the garden stops, the club will also open the Hamilton Plantation Tabby Slave Cabins at Gascoigne Bluff for a festive marketplace featuring local vendors and artisans, Cassina Garden Club’s Plant Sale, and food trucks. Proceeds from this event help to maintain cabins and gardens on Gascoigne Bluff.

The annual self-guided tour will take place on April 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets are $30 in advance, $35 the day of the event. For more information, go to cassinagardenclub.org

Cottage on the Green

How to Decorate a Small Backyard: 8 Ideas to Deck Out Your Tiny Space

Savvy homeowners and renters know that a small backyard can be functional, even if it’s the size of a broom closet. With the right furniture and decor, your pocket patio will look like a cozy oasis perfect for lounging, container gardening, or even hosting small gatherings. (Emphasis on small.)

The best way to curate a small yet functional outdoor space is to declutter and keep only the basics. “If you stick to the essentials, your outdoor area will look larger,” says Jamie Novak, author of “Keep This Toss That.” That means making sure your backyard doesn’t become a dumping ground for all the random junk you can’t fit inside.

Ready to pump up your tiny outdoor space to its maximum potential? Here are eight decorating ideas.

1. Bistro table

What’s the classic small-space solution to having somewhere to dine? A bistro table, says Darla DeMorrow, professional organizer, decorator, and home stager. “Walk anywhere in Paris, and you’ll see people drinking and dining at these small round or square tables and woven chairs,” she says.

2. String lights

Twinkly string lights can liven up just about any space, but they work especially well in a small, enclosed area. “String lights are ideal in a small backyard, because you have places to anchor them,” Drew Henry of Design Dudes in San Antonio. He points out that they also help define the area and don’t take up any floor space .

Julie Coraccio, a professional organizer, recommends a solar-powered set (Next Deal Shop, $20) and a weatherproof set (Home Depot, $41).

3. Storage benches and ottomans

Storage benches are a must in a small backyard—and they’re even better when they have wheels. Mobile pieces can be moved inside or outside, and “Storage ottomans double as seating,” Novak says.

Coraccio recommends this six-piece wicker set (Sunset Garden, $550), which has seating for four, and four of the pieces also open up for storage.

4. Hanging planters

Large planters have no place on your tiny deck or around a small yard. Ceramic planters will take up precious square footage on the ground, so to maximize space, think vertically. “Stacked planters or a wall garden draw the eye upward and make use of overlooked or wasted real estate,” she adds. A green wall can also beautify a metal link fence between you and your neighbor.

You can also hang window boxes over the fence that divides your lot from other properties. “Get creative by hanging little herb pots or succulents on the wall,” says Henry.

5. Nesting tables

A set of nesting tables can expand to fit a spread of food and drinks while entertaining guests. But after the party’s over, you can push them back in line so they take up as little space as possible. A traditional wooden set of three nesting tables (Hayneedle, $129) will spruce up any small outdoor space.

6. Rolling cart

Think about adding a bar cart on wheels to your tiny porch when the weather is nice. “With a rolling cart, you don’t need multiple stationary tables,” says Novak. In some situations, it can be a stand-in for a side table. And a cart with sides that flip up is a total plus. It’ll give you additional space to hold platters of food, napkins, and, of course, cocktails.

7. Outdoor mirror

Interior designers have touted the value of a mirror in a small space and how it can make the space look bigger. Jeanine Boiko, a home blogger at Okio B Designs and a real estate agent with Exit Realty Gateway in Wantaugh, NY, used a mirror to make a small she-shed in her backyard look larger. “It’ll do the same thing for your tiny outdoor space,” she says.

Be sure to pick a mirror made from a metal that’ll withstand the elements. “If you’re on a budget, check out local garage sales, where you’ll likely find a couple for a steal,” Boiko recommends.

8. Dividing curtains

A tiny backyard usually means you’re smashed up right next to your neighbor’s outdoor dwelling. To keep your privacy intact, put up a set of curtains made of weather-resistant fabric, heavy-duty plastic, or polyester. Or channel your inner bohemian and string up a wall of funky beads or shells as a divider.
