JJ feeling cornered and isolating himself in 1x07 vs in 3x04
welcome back to “how many ways can sof talk about one scene”
so i've talked SO MUCH about JJ stealing the money from Barry in 1x07 already (specifically here) but i just wanna rant about it a little bit more in comparison to the first jiara talk in 3x04.
so in 1x07, he steals the money and John B and the rest of the pogues are immediately trying to get him to rethink it, refusing to get into the twinkie with him and calling him out for his "crazy", impulsive shit. JJ tries his best to explain his reasoning, saying that they deserve some kind of reparations for the trauma of being held at gunpoint by Barry and also appealing directly to Pope by reminding him that he took the fall for him for Topper's boat. to me, this all reads as a desperate attempt to get the pogues to see that all that "crazy" stuff that he does is for them, at least in his mind. he's always trying to help them out and do right by them and perform these extravagant acts of service for them to prove that he's worth their love, but he doesn't know how to explain all of that, so he just goes on the defensive when things start going south in the conversation. and when it's clear to JJ that the pogues just don't get it (partially because how in the fuck is he supposed to explain it without also admitting how worthless and undeserving of love he feels), he walks away.
flash forward to 3x04, when JJ is starting to employ some of those same defense mechanisms from the 1x07 pogue fight in this conversation with Kiara. he has these blinders up again and is trying to protect himself by going on the defensive, ranting in fragments about how he has nothing and that Kie could never care about him and that she doesn't understand what it would take to even begin to help him, all of it building up to him finally calling her a kook, which is one of the few times that he actually goes on the offensive. and this is where we start to see the main difference between 1x07 and 3x04.
in 1x07, JJ felt cornered because of a lack of understanding, so he went on the defensive and ultimately isolated himself. but in 3x04, he felt cornered because of a wealth of understanding, so he resorted to the offensive, and once again ultimately ended up isolating himself.
JJ calling Kie a kook is the last ditch effort to get her to play into his self-sabotage. the defensive didn't work, dancing around the issue of her being from a different world didn't work, so now he's just gotta go for the killing blow and hope that she's the one to walk away so he doesn't have to do it first. he's purposefully trying to hit her where it hurts so that she'll blow up right back at him and realize that he's the piece of shit that he believes himself to be. and i think this reaction absolutely comes from Luke (as does the running away and the overall not believing that he's good enough thing, truly every bad trait of jj's can be traced back to that piece of shit i swear).
Luke is so good at fishing for people's insecurities and pushing until he gets a reaction (ie: 1x05 with JJ and 2x08 with Kie), so we can assume that that's where JJ learned this behavior from. of course, he's doing it in 3x04 more as a way to hurt and isolate himself, but let's not pretend like Kie isn't still very much collateral damage in JJ's own self-sabotage here. and of course, since JJ is actually a good human being unlike his father, we can see that he clearly regrets calling her a kook immediately after saying it. important differences there. when JJ is trying to use a trick from Luke cause his own tricks aren't working well enough, he can't stomach it.
and of course, that's only made worse when Kie still refuses to play along. she's not playing into his self-sabotage and giving him the reaction that he's trying to get out of her because she sees right through it all. she's being so gentle and understanding (while also still standing her ground and not letting him get away with calling her a kook btw what an actual icon), and it's so antithetical to everything he's grown up around.
she doesn't take the bait. not even a little bit. because she knows him. and so he runs. just like he did back in 1x07, but for the exact opposite reasoning.
Kie knows him too well, and i think for JJ, that's potentially even more terrifying than the pogues not understanding him enough back in 1x07. hence, taking a page from Luke's book and resorting to the offensive. not just walking away from Kie like he had walked away from the pogues before, but riding away on his bike. riding out to a pier and basically having a panic attack. everything about it is heightened compared to the 1x07 fight.
because being so vulnerable and so incredibly known by Kie, of all people??? his worst nightmare because it's also his greatest wish.

our hopes for cheek kiss, bracelet touch, john b kiara conversation about jj 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡
And jealous Kie 🤡🤡🤡 but you know. We have so many headcanons and there is just always gonna be stuff that they don’t put in. It’s part of it.
You know what drove me crazy? Both JJ and Kie were being so obvious about needing someone to talk to about what was going on with JB and Sarah. They kept alluding to it. But jarah literally skipped right over it like “anyway the thing with Topper-“
It would have been nice if Kie had had a single conversation with JB at all after episode one lmao. My johnkie friendship sensibilities withered. And I think I audibly said “thank god” when JB finally went on a mission with JJ period.

Stardust watches OBX: episode four
Spoilers ahead for OBX 3x04!
I am going to pull my eyes out of my skull
(Really, though, I’m grateful for how this show handles trauma. It doesn’t go away instantly and I don’t think jiara should happen instantly, as much as it pains me to wait. Kie has been really especially understanding, which is beautiful in the context of a relationship, especially a relationship with someone who has been abused. It’s well-done, exceedingly so. But I’m in pain)

OBX 3x04 - The Diary
Not to gif the entire scene, but this one is so good (aren't they all?). The way that Kie checks with JJ if he's in the right space to talk. His expressions and difficulty with vulnerability, but really trying for her.
Kie looking heartbroken when he says to call a truce. The slight linger with the handshake, and the attraction pulling between them before JJ breaks it. And the music.

I think we can all stay assured Jiara is NEVER gonna blow up as a ship in canon, we know just as much as they know that’s THE ship of the show, they’re the couple the fans themselves basically created and have been rooting for throughout the seasons, let’s be real if we go on the OBX tags on social media ALL you can see is Jiara, they’re simply milking it and teasing it as much as they can, rightfully so ‘cause their storyline is the pot of gold of the show so of course the angst probably isn’t over yet (but I mean it’s JJ and Kiara do we expect anything less from them?) and they’re gonna have to navigate through the problems JJ was so worried about this season but I doubt they’re gonna break ‘em up BASICALLY 2 EPISODES LATER.
Alsoooooo considering the way the season ended almost with a taste of a series finale but still full of gaps to fill and a tease, I have this big feeling they got the renewal for s4 mid filming s3 and changed route as they went adjusting the script knowing they had more time to wrap EVERYTHING up, the fact they wrote and shot a kiss for 3x04 but then changed route and postponed it towards the end of the season it’s actually a good sign ‘cause they probably thought “ok, there’s gonna be time for the fans to see more of them as a couple later” and I’m sure they absolutely want that ‘cause again Jiara is the main engagement for the show.
Fully agree that jiara are safe from any long term break up. I feel like the writers have settled on their endgame ships and now they will just continue to explore those dynamics. And honestly, even "break ups" in this show are hardly even that. Look at jarah who go through the fucking ringer every season and then are back together 2 episodes later. Now, I definitely don't want jiara to get the same brand as drama as jarah but I think any issues that pop up to divide jiara would be very short lived.
I don't know how early they heard about renewal (although they had to have been confident) but I definitely think they made a final edit after renewal was confirmed that cut big things like Luke showing up. They either want to save that for next season or they want to be able to go back to the drawing board now they have a guarantee of another season.
And yeah, they are just as obsessed with jiara as we are, exhibit a:

i'm rewatching s3 for jiara week research and preparation for the podcast deep dives and goddamnit i just can't stop thinking about the massive visual contrast of these two Jiara 3x04 scenes
Tumblr media Tumblr media
LIKE LOOK AT IT
the first scene was either shot later in the day (which is kind of annoying considering it's supposed to be earlier in the canon timeline) or it just has way more of the trademarked obx filter on it, but either way, it's so much more orange and shadowy and bleak. the marsh behind them looks practically grey in spots, so much of the foliage just looks like it's dying or already dead, and that's so fitting for the scene, considering how it's about JJ trying to convince Kie that he has nothing to offer her and doesn't deserve any of her help or love. since they've returned to the obx, he's replanted himself in this dying, decrepit place that holds so much trauma for him, and being surrounded by all of that pain, visually depicted by both the colors and the multiple shots framed through the broken porch screen, is a constant reminder of the stagnation that he sees for his future.
but the second scene, which shows a much calmer conversation where Kie expresses just how well she understands JJ and ends with a truce between them, is staged at the Chateau, where everything is so much greener and lush and lit up by fairy lights (that JJ himself put up) and alive. the Chateau has always been much more of a home for JJ, which is probably part of the reason why he's able to actually hear what Kie is saying to him this time. the change in setting allows for JJ to do what he couldn't back at his house, which is so perfectly symbolized by how green everything is around them compared to how dead everything was in the previous scene. if he stays in that place of trauma, which he seems to find some kind of morbid comfort in, he's resigning himself to not grow beyond it and beyond the pain he's suffered, he's allowing himself to be that stagnation that is so palpable in the visuals of that setting. it's the act of seeking out his loved ones (specifically John B) at the Chateau that allows him to move forward to an even slightly healthier place in this episode.
the differences in the settings so clearly visualize JJ's comfort level in the two locations, which also directly affects his mental state and willingness to be seen and ultimately loved by Kie, and i could not be more thrilled with the attention to detail with these shot compositions and colorings (even if the coloring was just based on when they filmed it idc it still worked out in their favor) and what it ultimately says about trauma and the steps to healing
god i could talk about Jiara just in this one episode for literal days on end
