🍀 What originally inspired the OC?

Corey was originally a self insert. They were my first playthrough of FHR, and I didn't know what kind of character I wanted yet. They pretty quickly morphed into what's best described as "my teenage angst personified". They've done a lot of evolving into their own distinct character since then, but the roots are still just me giving my inner child a face and a redemption arc. Made my sidestep the kind of hero 14 year old me needed to see. 10/10 accidental therapy seeing Corey realize their self worth over the course of the story.

Self expression. They might not share everything on their mind in a talk-about-your-feelings kind of way, but they wear their heart on their sleeve to the point that its detrimental. They hold nothing back. Their villain reveal at the end of retribution was inevitable, they cant maintain enough of a mask to be anything but Sidestep. It might make for a shitty secret identity, but at least their authenticity garners them a lot of sympathy. Their fan club eats it up, Mia Ochoa thinks they're still a hero, and both Chen and Ortega are wondering if they have a good point. So the rebel with a cause angle is working out for them at least.

💀Does your OC have any phobias?

Took the definitions straight from Wikipedia lol. Also, putting this one under a cut for discussion of medical trauma and related issues.

Corey has a lot of anxiety and irrational fears. The worst of them stems from their farm trauma. Iatrophobia - fear of doctors and medical tests.

In very close second place due to the heartbreak incident. Acrophobia - fear of heights.

If we leave out those standard sidestep fears, the next worst is pseudodysphagia.

Pseudodysphagia, in its severe form, is the irrational fear of swallowing or, in its minor form, of choking.

The severity of this varies for them depending on their stress levels, but on their worst days they struggle to eat and drink, even smoking or touching their mouth can be a trigger when it gets bad. It stems from their farm trauma. Primary cause being that Corey, like many red heads, is resistant to anesthesia, and has woken up mid procedure more times than they can count. Being conscious while intubated left a lasting impression on their gag reflex.

Leon Warner: Accent it. He put in some work to make his body look better, and whenever he's not wearing a jacket of some kind, he likes wearing shirts that make his arms look bigger.

Corey Stephens: Much like his sister, he's fine with whatever, but it leans more on the side of accenting his body type.

Eden does not like heights. He's already 6'5", he's tall enough, he doesn't need the extra help. His stomach sinks as he looks down great heights. It's his nightmare scenario hanging over the edge of a bottomless pit.

Oh yeah definitely!!! Uh, @blue-otic, my dear brother and I, have a ton of paired OCS. So many that sometimes it's hard to keep track. Osiris and Octavia came about as a result of me making some friends for one of his characters!

37. Introduce an OC who is not quite human

I mean, I'd say Omni, but I'm not sure they count, haha. They're human, they just happen to have that TV on their head. Sketch isn't human though. They're an alien <3

🥀: Corey is really good at meeting deadlines, however there's two ways he does it: perfectly scheduled to the minute, or. doing everything in the 3 hours before said deadline

🌾: Corey........ doesn't eat a lot of things. mostly coffee + other caffeinated drinks and various breads. sometimes oranges. maaaaaybe beef but it really depends. he Will eat some other things mostly when he has to but he hates it and he cannot under any circumstances make himself eat fish . autism swag

☘��: yes if that superstition existed in his world. he is very very superstitious

🍃: probably when he was 10 or 11 ish. he had to move countries, his brother died, he became chronically ill, and his mother got even worse with her treatment of him.

🍕 What is their favorite food?

Corey would do anything for tamales. Doesnt matter what kind of filling or where theyre from (buddys got low standards, regularly buys gas station tamales and makes themselves sick). But super extra bonus points if theyre from tia Elena. They love the process of making them just as much as eating them, but they rarely do it. Making tamales is meant to be a family affair also they suck at cooking and know they need help to pull it off

🧠 What do you like the most about the OC?

I love how well I can relate to Corey and some of their struggles, especially given their origins as a self insert. Its been a good exercise in self love lol.

On a less sappy note, I love drawing them. Their facial features (particularly their nose) are really fun to draw, and we share the same fashion sense. Drawing all the tiny details on their sidestep-era battle jacket is super therapeutic and relaxing.

The general plot of his story is that he’s an american foreign exchange student who is essentially “shipped off” to another country for a year to study and make better of himself.

…corey is a 15 year old boy from new york city and comes from a shitty neighbourhood and a shitty school (as if he actually attends school to begin with lol)

…he’s known to be quite volatile bc he struggles with violent anger issues and a nicotine addiction. His anger issues stem from untreated, moderate to severe ADHD and a rocky upbringing (dad’s in jail, mom has issues. His anger outbursts were a lot worse when he was a smaller kid), but he attends community counselling for his issues and is on mood stabilizers for his anger. When he takes them, he’s a lot more lethargic and nonchalant in his day to day life..

…nearly his entire friend group all have unspecified gang affiliations, except for him and his best friend and though he tries to stay out of that business, he is still valued by a lot of his gang friends…and alas still ends up in a lot of trouble with the law, regardless. He steals for his buddies a lot, beats on others when he’s mad, particularly on a rich spoiled brat kid named Riley, spends nights in jail/juvie…he gets arrested for something a lot more serious and narrowly misses getting tried as an adult for it, but i’ll go more in depth into that possibly later or on a separate post…

On his literal first night in Japan, he accidentally runs head-on into Takemichi on the street making michi drop his food on the ground. This triggers him to absolutely HATE corey with a burning passion—but like. how could he not. Corey looks like an entitled tourist, speaks clumsy japanese, and has a standoff-ish and lethargic personality…

…so for the entirety of the summer break leading up to the start of school, Takemichi and his boys pick fights (not just ass whooping either) with Corey, and much to Takemichi and Corey’s anguish they end up attending the same school.

…they start become more friendly with one another after Corey is tasked with helping Takemichi with his math lessons (my man’s is failing so hard), and with every study session, they grow to understand one another more and more and there are homoromantic undertones to their friendship

also michi doesn’t really tell Corey about Toman business bc he doesn’t wanna involve some random american in that shit (and i’m undecided if i even want corey to have any connection with toman to begin with because he doesn’t rest fit into all that…but…we’ll see…), so this is precisely where the lore gets messy and needs some revising….
