by David Schrock | When Jesus died and rose again, rocks cracked open, tombs emptied, and creation shook. As Matthew reports it, there was an earthquake associated with Christ’s death and resurrection. And that earthquake not only shook creation, it also raised the dead. As Matthew 27:52 says...

"One of the hardest problems we encountered in trying to minister to human needs was the case of the “short-timer” and the “repeater.” In petty offenses the repeaters are, of course, much more numerous than in felony cases. They are picked up for vagrancy, drunkenness, petit larceny, and many other offenses, given from a few days to a few months in the jail or the workhouse, then turned loose, broke and homeless, and soon find their way back in. .... The trouble here was not entirely the fault of the courts or of the jails. The trouble lay in the fact that these human derelicts were turned loose after they had done time with no provision for their feeding, housing or employment.
There is not much to be done with a hardened reprobate, but there is hope for a big majority of the first offenders, most of whom are young men and women under twenty-one years of age. The solution is a job—honest work. That is what we tried to get for them, and when we succeeded they almost always made good.
We gave more than 100 pairs of shoes in one year to the men and women who were released from Occoquan, and other articles of clothing in proportion. Many, in and out of prison, were fitted with spectacles. This is only half of the story. The other half is that 75% of the repeaters were mentally defective. Many of them were hopeless. No amount of sympathy or punishment would cure them. There is no power on earth that can make a good man or a good woman out of a person when they have no brain capable of proper understanding. The best way to take care of wrecks of this kind is to put them in an institution and keep them there.
Each evening a new batch of offenders was taken down to Occoquan, and each morning a new bunch was brought up and set adrift.
“You're all free now to go your way,” said the guard to the group of short-timers whom he had brought up on the train and turned loose at the Union Station.
Free! The cold rain was falling and caused them to turn up their tattered coat collars. The water was splashing through their worn-out shoes. In the group of dejected colored and white men and women was a white boy, released from his first term in the workhouse.
“Where ya goin’, buddy ?”’
“I dunno,” answered the forlorn looking youngster.
It was true; he did not know. He, like the majority of the motley crowd from Occoquan, had no money, no job, no home. The stigma of the prison was upon him, but it was his first experience and his case was not hopeless. He did not like the workhouse and vowed never to return, but what could he do? He had been pinched for loitering when he was found asleep in someone’s garage. Where could he sleep this night? How could he earn enough money to buy food to keep his body and soul together? That is the problem. The Prisoners Relief Society has been helping tens of thousands of released prisoners, both male and female, to solve it. That is the problem that the public has not yet been able to solve for them.
If it had not been possible to extend relief to this youth he would have become one of the great army of second-timers and repeaters who are filling the filthy and overcrowded jails and workhouses throughout the land. A small amount of time and money, plus a little human kindness, saved this boy from a life of crime—and the public a lot of money."
- Earl Ellicott Dudding, The Trail of the Dead Years. Edited by William Winfred Smith. Huntington, West Virginia: Prisoners Relief Society, 1932. p. 215-217.

On this day, 14 November 1917, the "Night of Terror" began at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia, in which 33 imprisoned suffragists were brutally tortured and beaten by guards. The women, mostly members of the National Women's Party had been picketing the White House in support of voting rights for women. Guards were ordered to attack the women on the evening of this day, and they began to assault the prisoners after midnight. https://www.facebook.com/workingclasshistory/photos/a.1819457841572691/2134882206696918/?type=3

Five Guys was founded in 1986 by Janie and Jerry Murrell. Jerry and the couple's sons Jim, Matt, Chad, and Ben were the original "Five Guys". The Murrells had a fifth son, Tyler, two years later. Today, all five sons, the current "Five Guys", are involved in the business: Matt and Jim travel the United States visiting stores, Chad oversees training, Ben selects the franchisees, and Tyler runs the bakery.
The first Five Guys was in Arlington's Westmont Shopping Center. Buns were baked in the same center by Brenner's Bakery. This location closed, in favor of another in Alexandria, Virginia, at the intersection of King and North Beauregard Streets, which closed on September 21, 2013.
More followed in Old Town Alexandria and Springfield, Virginia, making five locations open by 2001. Their success encouraged the Murrells to franchise their concept the following year, engaging Fransmart, a franchise sales organization. Former American football player Mark Moseley, who had gone to work for Fransmart after his football career, played a key role in Five Guys' expansion and went on to become the company's director of franchise development after it ended its business relationship with Fransmart. In early 2003, the chain began franchising, opening the doors to rapid expansion which caught the attention of national restaurant trade organizations and the national press. The expansion started in Virginia and Maryland, and by the end of 2004, over 300 units were in development through the Northeast. Over the next few years, the chain rapidly expanded across the entire United States and into Canada, reaching over 1,000 locations by 2012.[needs update][citation needed]
The first location outside North America opened in the United Kingdom in July 2013, in London on Long Acre in Covent Garden. The chain now has more than 150 restaurants in the UK. Five Guys also has locations in the Middle East and has continued to expand in Europe. In late 2017, Five Guys opened its first restaurants in Germany, with a branch in Frankfurt and another in Essen.
Five Guys, one of the top three burgers in the U.S., opened its first Korean store in Gangnam, Seoul, at 11 a.m. on June 26, 2023 with a countdown shout. As of 2024, there are a total of four branches in Seoul.
Five Guys Enterprises has several affiliated companies that are not part of a consolidated group, but are under common ownership. Five Guys Operations was founded in 2012, Five Guys Holdings was founded in 2007. Five Guys Foods UK Limited was incorporated on March 12, 2013. FGE International, FGO International BV, and FG Coöperatief U.A. are based in Amsterdam. FGH International C.V. is located in Bermuda.
Five Guys had a 39,900 square feet (3,710 m2) headquarters in Lorton, Virginia, overlooking the Occoquan and Potomac Rivers, that was specially designed to convey the corporate brand. According to the architect, "The lobby mimics the typical Five Guys restaurant with red and white tile, tall tables, Freestyle Coke machine and signature peanut boxes." In 2023, they moved their headquarters to a new location in Alexandria, Virginia.
On September 24, 2020, the first Five Guys location with a drive-through window opened in Surfside Beach, South Carolina. The franchisee retained it from the former business in the building in light of COVID-19 pandemic safe practices.
In September 2021, Five Guys opened their first location in Australia. The chain also has plans to expand into New Zealand. In November 2022, Five Guys announced the relocation of their headquarters to the Carlyle neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia.
Tumblr media
Five Guys has received numerous awards in D.C. area publications, including "Number 1 Burger" by Washingtonian Magazine for seven years.[citation needed] The former US President Barack Obama is reportedly a fan, buying lunch for himself and his colleagues at the Washington Five Guys branch in 2011.

Occoquan Bay - a surprise under every dumpster lid. Pro tip from one of my fellow volunteers, grab a long piece of wood and prop it in the dumpster to help the critters out. . . . . . I used to work here as a Wildlife Refuge Ranger but now working as an Assistant at US Fish and Wildlife HQ I don’t get to enjoy these sorts of days anymore. I decided to head back to volunteer at the visitor center and was so happy I did. #nationalwildliferefuge #occoquanbaynationalwildliferefuge #volunteer (at Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge) https://www.instagram.com/p/Co0SHyfpzXtKKBACQTHJmnzxbl3SAWW4wnBWR40/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

On Nov. 15, 1917, about 20 women were subjected to beatings and torture at Occoquan Workhouse, a prison in Virginia, in what became known as the “Night of Terror.”
On the evening of Nov. 14, the superintendent ordered his guards to brutally assault imprisoned suffragists. This “Night of Terror” galvanized support for the women’s suffrage movement at a critical moment.
The tortured prisoners included activists Dorothy Day and Lucy Burns. Some were left for dead after the beatings. They had been arrested for peacefully picketing for universal suffrage in front of the White House.
President Woodrow Wilson had led the country into WWI to “make the world safe for democracy.”
The demonstrators called attention to the need for complete democracy at home, where women (and in many states, African Americans, Native Americans, Latinos) lacked complete voting rights.

Exploring the Benefits of Chiropractic Care for Subluxation in Woodbridge Residents
Woodbridge, a thriving community filled with landscapes that beckon you to explore, but for many, the pain and discomfort of subluxation can keep them from fully enjoying life. This blog post is dedicated to shedding light on the rejuvenating effects of chiropractic care for the citizens of Woodbridge, Virginia. With a specialized focus on subluxation, we aim to demystify the term, underscore its debilitating impact, and present the innovative chiropractic treatments available at HF Rehab.
Defining Subluxation and its Impact on Daily Living
Subluxation is a condition where misaligned vertebrae in the spine cause nerve interference, impacting both the immediate and distant areas of the body. This disruption can lead to a variety of symptoms, including pain, numbness, or a tingling sensation.
For Woodbridge locals, the jarring effects of subluxation can diminish the joy found in their daily activities, whether it's exploring the Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge or simply savoring a quiet moment at home. It's not just physical; subluxation can present psychological and emotional hurdles, affecting one's quality of life.
The Role of Chiropractic Care in Addressing Subluxation
Chiropractic care offers a holistic and often preferred alternative to surgical intervention or the use of medication. Through manual adjustments, chiropractors can realign the spine, relieving the compression on nerves due to Chiropractic subluxation Woodbridge.
At HF Rehab, we believe in the body's innate ability to heal itself. Chiropractic adjustments restore proper alignment and nerve function, supporting the natural healing processes within the body. This approach not only alleviates immediate discomfort but also forms a foundation for long-term health and wellness.
Benefits of Chiropractic Care for Woodbridge Residents
Pain Relief and Improved Mobility
Whether it's the persistent twinge in your lower back that flares up during gardening, or the chronic discomfort in your neck that limits your ability to turn your head fully, the pain associated with subluxation can be restrictive.
Chiropractic adjustments provide a drug-free way to manage and, in many cases, alleviate this pain. The restored alignment of the spine reduces pressure on affected nerves, promoting swift recovery and improved mobility. Woodbridge residents can rejoice in the liberation from their physical constraints, allowing them to be active participants in their lives once more.
Enhancing Overall Health and Wellness
Chiropractic care is not just about pain management; it is about fostering a healthy lifestyle. By addressing subluxation, chiropractors help enhance the body's overall function. This, in turn, boosts the immune system, improves sleep, and increases energy levels — aspects of life that are invaluable to our mental and physical well-being.
Woodbridge residents who choose chiropractic care are making a proactive decision to invest in their health — a gesture that extends its benefits far beyond temporary relief.
Personalized Care Plans at HF Rehab
Each patient at HF Rehab receives a personalized care plan tailored to their unique needs and health goals. Our approach is collaborative and inclusive, with thorough discussions and education about the condition and treatment options.

This individualized attention ensures that every patient — from the athlete seeking performance enhancement to the senior aiming for an active retirement — receives the precise care necessary to reach their full potential.
How Chiropractic Care at HF Rehab Works

Our goal is to empower Woodbridge residents with the tools to maintain a healthy spine and, by extension, a healthier life. Through regular check-ins, we ensure that you continue to enjoy the full range of movement and comfort that come with a well-aligned body.
